Don't you think Zhenia's retirement is somehow similar to Rafter's comeback? :D

I certainly hope so!

The hell, win the Cup and stay on tour, Zhenia

Thay put Paul-Henri then... :D
Risky, but a good decision, imo. I thought they wouldnt have the guts to throw an unexperienced player there.
I hope he does well.

But Im all the way with Russia! :D

Arnaud is injured,he has tendinitis at his right wrist.

from Arnaud's words "i feel in peace with myself.it's a big disappointment to not play but the choice of Guy is logic.i have a pain in my wrist who doesnt permit me to be at 100%.I said to Guy: as i'm not at 100% i dont have a chance to beat safin or kafelnikov.plus there is Paulo who is in a great shape,so the decision is made"

Jorge
11-28-2002, 08:05 PM
why Nicolas Escudé is not playing instead Clement??
is he injured or something?
Paul-Henri is a good player but has not the experience of Nicolas. I think that Nicolas is a better option.
And he also has a good record against Safin.

I prefer Nicolas over Paul-Henri, basically because the experiencie fact.
but also Paul-Henri know how to beat Marat.

Paul-Henri MATHIEU (FRA) v Marat SAFIN (RUS)

2002 Moscow Carpet (I) SF Paul-Henri MATHIEU 7-6(3) 6-4

Well Clay isn't exactly Nico's best surface, if Im' not mistaken.

So it Clement isn't 100%, I would say that PH made sense with out much argument.

Dahveed
11-28-2002, 09:28 PM
Nicolas's records on clay are not great. So that must be the reason.

Lindsayfan
11-28-2002, 09:38 PM
Nico will play double, and clay is his worst surface.instead of Paulo,Guy could have called Santoro cos of his fantastic record against Safin, but Santoro must play double and cant be too tired.

ALLEZ LA FRANCE!!!! :D

Definitively Escudé was a better choice than the young Mathieu. The experience is very important beyond the record on any surface when you are playing this kind of matches.
Against Safin he didn't have chances. let's see what happens against Kafelnikov

Davis Cup throws everything out the window.
I actually think Nicolas would have been a better choice, but on clay.... Well, Santoro should have played. I mean, he played both singels & doubles in a couple other of France's ties didnt he?

Escudé has not a good record on clay, (Mathieu neither 9-10), but this is Davis Cup, the pressure is different, the atmosphere too, across the tennis history there are many examples of players that shines a lot whenever they are playing the Davis Cup, even when they are not in their best shape. why? maybe because they are representing their country and not only themselves.
Nicolas has a great record playing the Davis, IMO his experience could be a better choice even if the matches are played on clay.
btw Mathieu lost, so the experiment didn't function against Marat. Let's see if he can beat Kafelnikov

nope Jorge,Mathieu lost cos Safin was just too good, not cos the experiment didnt function.have u seen the match?

Jorge
11-29-2002, 08:39 PM
yes i saw the match, Marat was too good, but Fabrice or Nicolas have more experience playing in this kind of matches.
btw have you seen the record of Nicolas on Davis Cup?
The victory over Guga on clay at Brasil?
over Roger Federer in Switzerland?
I just say why not to pick him? why?

he is a best option all the way, but Guy Forget is the captain

Tryphon
11-29-2002, 09:31 PM
So all those ties were played on clay and I did not even noticed? LOOOLLL. Jorge it's not your fault if the DC site is wrong but there are big mistakes in this list, many of the ties were actually played on indoor carpet.

As for beating Guga, that's good but that was a dead rubber and everybody knows they don't mean much.

Yet I can see your point, selecting Escudé today would have been a huge bet but he is a fantastic Davis Cupper and the fact that he can't win many consecutive matches on clay doesn't mean he can't win one on a given day, especially as indoor clay is a bit different than outdoor clay, slightly easier for serve-and-volleyer.
Besides, he is the only one who took a set from Marat at the recent Paris TMS.

Still, he is the last choice of the team for clay and if Forget had made the choice of risking tiring one of his doubles player by selecting him on Friday, then obviously he would have picked Santoro considering his record against Marat.

Lindsayfan
11-29-2002, 09:49 PM
ditto Tryphon ;)

Jorge
11-29-2002, 09:50 PM
well the info about the surfaces is wrong *editing*. I saw the info first at the ITF website (right) and later at the Davis Cup website (wrong).
Still the record of Nicolas is quite good 8-1 and has a victory over Guga at Brasil on clay (even if it was a "dead rubber", Guga playing in Florianopolis in front his people... not easy, not easy.)

well maybe Nicolas could be a surprise the next sunday, who knows? but i don't think so
BTW is Mathieu the best claycourter among Santoro, Escude and himself? his record now is 9 victories and 10 defeats on clay, not at all impressive;)

Tryphon
11-29-2002, 10:13 PM
Mathieu's wins/losses on every surface don't mean too much considering his career really only started seriously at some point this year.

When you think that as an "unknown" (to the non-tennis fans at least) he reached the last 16 at the French Open and then almost beat Agassi, he must not be that bad on clay. :D

I don't totally exclude myself that in case the 5th match Sunday is decisive, Forget could play a banco with Nico, the idea had crossed my mind too.

But today he only mentioned that he is not sure yet if he would have Mathieu or Santoro play Kafel on Sunday if there's a 5th match and added that he'd better concentrate on Saturday first.

I think he'd better trust Mathieu or try Escudé rather than pick Santoro who is usually not too good against Yevgeny. Kafel has not been convincing today but that does not mean he'll be bad on Sunday as well, he has his pride. :o

Forget might also try to pick Fabrice instead of Grosjean against Marat for the 4th match but I think it is very unlikely he'll drop Seb considering how well he played today.

Of course, if the doubles tomorrow lasts 6 hours, maybe it's Mikhail who'll play on Sunday, everything's possible! ;)

11-29-2002, 10:26 PM
It didn't pay off playing Mattheiu this time as Safin had learnt from his mistakes in Moscow - probably he underestimated his opponent then & once he's down the mind comes into play - this time he made sure he took control from the beginning.
But with Grosjean getting the equalizer & anything can happen in the doubles, if he does play again on Sunday vs Kafelnikov he will have that bit of experience behind him, besides, unlike YK he'll have had a day off.
There is also the case that Escude or Santoro can play Sunday instead of P-H, all depends on tomorrow & who's playing 1st on Sun.
