Coffee With Champions
By Tennis Week
03/08/2005

Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Andy Roddick and Maria Sharapova have been hitting the malls and hanging out at Bed Bath and Beyond and Starbucks' all over South Florida. The four Grand Slam champions aren't double-dating, shopping for sheets, moonlighting for minimum wage or swallowing shots of espresso for a caffeine-fueled group practice-session frenzy.

The championship quartet are quietly spending time posing for photos with fans and silently watching shoppers come and go and while they may seem subdued, the players are all busy out on the town preparing for this month's Nasdaq-100 Open on Key Biscayne. Despite their smiles they all look flat.

As part of the NASDAQ-100 Open’s efforts to "Own the Town" during the month of March, life-size photos of defending champions Williams and Roddick, plus Wimbledon winners Sharapova and Federer promoting the NASDAQ-100 Open are popping up all over South Florida. Fans are having their pictures taken with these lifesize tennis stars from Lincoln Road to Aventura Mall to Boca Raton to Palm Beach Gardens.

"South Florida is a busy place during March with so much to do, which makes for a very competitive landscape for events," said Tournament Director Adam Barrett. "In taking an ‘Own the Town’ approach, and working with our sponsors, we aim to bring the NASDAQ-100 Open into the forefront as a preferred destination for both tennis fans and for people who are looking for an entertaining way to spend a day.”

Look for at least one of these six-foot stand-alone photos, along with posters promoting the NASDAQ-100 Open, which will be held March 23rd–April 3rd at the Crandon Park Tennis Center on Key Biscayne, in 89 Starbucks locations in Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and surrounding cities as far west as Naples and North to Jupiter.

The life-size photos of Sharapova and Williams will also make appearances in 23 Bed, Bath & Beyond shops in South Florida as well as the Lan Airlines terminal in Miami International Airport.

As the tournament nears, the "life-size" replicas will make appearances in tennis clubs, gyms, restaurants and other south Florida locations. Olympic gold medallist Nicolas Massu hit the Crandon Park courts — not in cardboard cutout form, but in the flesh — for a practice session last week. To see the photo, please click this Massu at Nasdaq-100 Open link.

The NASDAQ-100 Open is one of nine ATP Masters Series events on the ATP calendar, a top tier event on the Sony Ericsson WTA TOUR calendar, and features the top men's and women's tennis players in the world. In 2004, Andy Roddick defeated Guillermo Coria to win for the first time in Miami. Serena Williams returned from injury to defend her title and win her third consecutive NASDAQ-100 Open championship. For ticket information, call (305) 442-3367 or visit the website at Nasdaq-100Open.com.

Oh I am hating two of those wildcards. Sorry, but neither Flip nor Young should have been given one considering what happened in IW. If one had to be given to a guy with a slipping ranking, it should have been JanMike.

The Americans are going to ruin Donald Young. Being in Britain I've never seen him play but I gather he has a lot of potential. What on earth are they hoping to achieve by giving him wildcards into tournaments like this. It's not as if his appearance is going to increase attendances/viewing figures by much anyway.

The poor kid is going to be so demoralised by getting 3/4 games a match it'll shatter his confidence. I don't like Flip but giving him a wild card is slightly more understandable seeing as its possible he might win 1 or 2 matches. Young hasn't got a hope against any player in the draw I'd go as far to suggest.

I agree. I think they might be copying Monfils. The difference is that Monfils (like Andy Roddick when he sucessfully transitioned from #1 junior to the ATP tour) because of his style will not be blown off the court by his opponents. If Young can't win more than 4 games v. Ginepri, Goldstein, & Clement, imagine what the scoreline would be against one of the big servers.

Monfils has had too many wildcards. He may well be able to justify them, but then he should be able to earn the ranking points elsewhere so that he can qualify outright. It shouldn't take too long either. Fair enough he gets a couple here and there, but every single tournament since last may? that is not right. Nothing against him personally, but he shouldn't be handed everything on a plate.

Haas Hits The Streets
By Tennis Week
03/15/2005

Tommy Haas is taking tennis to the streets on Friday morning. Haas will help promote next week's Nasdaq-100 Open by hitting with about 50 kids from the Miami-Dade County Parks & Recreation tennis camps at 11 a.m. on the street in front of the Stephen P. Clark Building on NW 1st Street between NW 1st and NW 2nd Ave in downtown Miami.

Officials from the Nasdaq-100 Open, Miami Dade County and other local dignitaries will get their chance to play tennis on the streets of Miami. New tournament sponsor Starbucks will be on hand providing product sampling.

The event is open to the public; spectators are encouraged to attend and parking is available.

Serena, Blake, Lopez To Conduct Clinic In Miami Tomorrow
By Tennis Week
03/18/2005

Serena Williams and James Blake partnered to claim the 2003 Hopman Cup championship. Tomorrow, the pair will take the court again — as opponents — joining forces with two Miami-area kids in a doubles match as part of Nike tennis clinic.

The three-time Nasdaq-100 Open champion, Blake and Spain's Feliciano Lopez will conduct a tennis clinic for about 200 kids from the City of Miami Parks and Recreation program from 1:30- 4 p.m. at the Ashe-Buchholz Tennis Center on 765 NW 36th Street in Miami.

As part of the tennis clinic, NikeGO will replenish the "Shoe Closet", established last year, at the Ashe-Buchholz Tennis Center. Every child who attends the clinic receives a free pair of Nike shoes from the NikeGO Shoe Closet.

During March 4th- April 3rd, NikeGO will donate a percentage of Niketown sales, up to $35,000 of Nike product, to the Ashe-Buchholz Tennis Center and the Miami “Summer Fun for Kids” program to support youth physical activity programs. After the clinic, Williams will conducted a question and answer session with the kids.

Hewitt pulls out of Nasdaq; Agassi to play (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/tennis/sfl-nasdaq032105,0,146054.story?coll=sfla-sports-tennis)

Hewitt out; Mathieu is next in (Mathieu wasn't in the qualifying draw released Sunday so either Hewitt withdrew Sunday or someone else in the main draw withdrew).

Truc
03-21-2005, 06:26 PM
No, Mathieu didn't want to play in Miami because he's too tired after the Davis Cup and Indian Wells. That's what I read today in french newspapers:

TMS Miami: Mathieu renonce Le 21/03/2005 - 10:37

But maybe he will change his mind now if he can enter the main draw without qualifying.

SwissMister1
03-21-2005, 06:58 PM
It is understandable that Paul-Henri may want to rest up for the clay season after all of the match play he has had the last few weeks. Plus, he isn't defending any points. It will be interesting to see if he is in the draw or not.
