Wow, I'm surprised. Looking at the posts for American players, there are not very many lol. Well, anyone at all know what's been going on with JMG's knee muscle tendinitis or something like that? I'm worried about him. BTW, he's an adorable man!  :hearts: :p

To quote JMG: "For the first time in 8 months, I am 100% healthy. It's fun to play tennis again."

He played really well at Superset and he's looking forward to the 2004 season. If he stays healthy, he will do very well next year.

I have some info about JMG up on my homepage and I've updated some of the pages on my site a little. Go JanMike.

He actaully lost his match that he played before this image was taken...
The same thing happens to James Blake. People ambush him too except it's more adults and groups of people posing and following him...

Hey Gambill fans,

Haven't posted in this thread in a while. I have a little bit of news and a little bit of gossip from JMG on my website, so surf on over and catch up on the latest. If you haven't looked at the site in a while, just read the Gambill Gazette box and use the scroll bar to read the old stuff.

For you Graydon fans, he has a new official website at www.graydonoliver.org so check that out too. Thanks!

Hello guys !!

I'm a big fan of Jan Michael Gambill, because he's a very good and HOT player !!

Yup, you got it (i'm gay !) And i have a question... Is it true that Jan-Mike is gay ? Because i read somewhere that he is, and it was said by an coach on the tour so...

Hi Joachim!
This was discussed in the Gambill and Graydon thread below... I've lost track of the number of times I've heard one tennis player accuse another of being gay. I think they throw that around at each other because they all know its the most damaging and hurtful thing to say.

Thank you for the compliment Alfonso.

I agree with you that it's very sad, but I've been around enough athletes in my life (stat girl, journalist, physio-trainer, driver, fan, whatever) to know that it's true. The athletic world has the whole macho persona going on, so to be accused of being less than macho is just about the ultimate insult. Jan-Michael is nice, relatively gentle and sensitive in person, and just nerdy enough that it happens to him a lot (similar to Philippoussis). Funny thing is, if any of those overly macho types in the tennis world found themselves on the side of the road with car trouble, JanMike would be a good guy to have come along to help out.

you're welcome, Fee.

I was looking at JMG pictures at Shanghai. First thing i noticed, new raquect (or new paint job  ) Did he really switched to the "shark"? Second, what a weird forheand. I knew it was two handed but not lie that. It reminds me Monica Seles. It looks like a lefty-two-handed-backhand with a weird grip for the left hand. I haven't see him played in a long time, but he has to make a big grip change when switching sides

Fee
09-30-2004, 10:08 PM
I think it's a new paintjob, but I'll have to ask him. It's actually possible that he did switch if it's true that he worked with Prince to develop the racquet.

If you look closely at his forehand, you can see that it's not really a true two hander, like Santoro's, because he only has 2 fingers and his thumb on the racquet. It is an odd stroke, but it works for him because he can disguise it so well. Of course the down side is that he has less reach on both sides and his footwork is a little suspect lately (I think mostly because of nagging shin soreness). I love his backhand though, when he can set up for it he can hurt people with it. Like Andy and others, he kind of twirls his racquet as he's moving so the grip changes aren't that big of a deal. I think it's more of a liability when he's at the net. But I haven't seen him play much this year either, so I could be way off. :D

anton
10-02-2004, 09:00 PM
I play 2 handed tennis and it is good for control. You can go for harder shots and control the ball better with both hands. Also high balls are easier for that same reason. Low balls and wide balls are harder.

What I don't understand is why Gambill who is 6 3.5 tall does not play the net more...
Also I think working with more coaches other than his dad could be helpful.

Another point is he plays so much doubles I would think that would make him want to go to the net more.

Aleksa's Laydee
10-02-2004, 09:59 PM
Bless him in his hat!! I thinks Jan Mikes game is good, its different and it makes it interesting. I agree the footwork needs to be excellent for him to be able to do REALLY well in tournaments...it must be tiring tho...I dont like doing the amount of foot work i do and i have a single and doubles forehand and backhand respectively :haha:

Do you know why he is not going to the Paris Masters Series ? It could be a good opportunity for him to win some more points before the end of the year... ;)

Good luck for Stockholm... his last tournament ?

Fee
10-22-2004, 12:40 AM
Yes, Stockholm will be his last tournament. He hasn't played Paris in a few years because its on indoor carpet. He is prone to injury on that surface and so he avoids it now. He would have to qualify to get into it anyway. I think he is looking forward to going home (he has an event there on November 5th) because he's had a pretty long year.

Next up: the winner of Enqvist v. söderling  I hope Enqvist wins that one, but it'll be hard choosing between JMG and Enqvist. I hate it when my 2 favorite players go head-to-head, especially in the early rounds. i like it in the final, cause either way, there's a winner. but this is too early. the doubles sucks too. Rd.2 JMG/Mahesh v. Söderling/his partner. I am cursed with a bad draw at stockholm this year.

jmgsdoubsprtnr

COME ON JMG/Mahesh!!! beat söderling/settergren to get revenge, cause söderling beat my favorite player, enqvist in round one!! (don't worry, jmg is in a close second, along with joachim johansson) it'd be nice if they took the title, JMG seems to do well when he has a good doubles partner (Graydon, Mahesh) too bad they never keep him as a permanent partner. maybe JMG wants to focus on singles  ? but it wouldn't hurt to play doubles more often.

ae wowww
10-28-2004, 06:01 PM
I guess that's it. If he played with one guy too much, he would feel comitted esp as Graydon is not a singles player.

Fee
10-28-2004, 10:37 PM
JMG tries to play doubles whenever he can. He and Graydon ended their partnership in 2003 because it got 'stale' to quote JMG and they just weren't winning together any more. They are still prety good friends and JMG was on the phone with GO almost everyday for a week or so back when the suspension was handed down in February. Right now his doubles ranking and his singles rankings are so low that he needs someone like Mahesh to get into the draw. (Add JMG's singles ranking to Mahesh's doubles ranking = less than 100 and that would get you into just about any doubles draw). I think he does prefer to play with one person as much as he can, but it doesn't always work out that way. That's true for most doubles players actually.

Elina has reported in from Stockholm. She says that JMG did play well and fight hard, but Joachim was just too tough. That was his last singles match this year, but he still has a doubles match on Friday and I hope he can play well again and win that match.

jmgsdoubsprtnr
10-29-2004, 12:22 AM
didn't JMG/Mahesh get a walkover b/c söderling got injured? i hope that doesn't mess up their "flow", maybe they can get more practice in.

Fee: do you know JMG personally? if you do, how did you meet and become such good friends? i'd love to be good friends with a pro player. it'd be so cool. do you get free tickets to any of JMG's matches?

sorry, so many questions. I'm sure there will be more though!

Fee
10-29-2004, 01:05 AM
Yes, they got a pass into the semifinals. I think they will be okay, they've been practicing and such.

I met him at the Los Angeles tournament in 2002 when I was a volunteer there and we became friends a few months later when I was working at the San Jose tournament and saw him again. I only know him as well as he lets me, which doesn't seem like much at all sometimes. He's only gotten me tickets once, to the Houston tournament. Last tournament I went to, JMG wasn't there and I had to get my tickets from other players (I didn't volunteer this year).

You can ask me all the questions you want, just don't let me bore every once else to death with my endless JMG stories. I can slip into 'hero worship' mode every once in a while if I'm not careful. I'm very fond of him, for the most part he is a good guy (but I still love Graydon the most, in some ways).

jmgsdoubsprtnr
10-29-2004, 01:08 AM
why graydon? do you know him better? what other players do you know, and who did you get the other tickets from? how are you able to contact the players for tickets, cause i know not all of them have people to watch their matches all the time, and it'd be nice to get some free tickets!

Fee
10-29-2004, 04:07 AM
Well, I probably shouldn't say I love Graydon more, that's almost like saying you love one of your children more than the other. He's just different than JMG, I see a different side of him sometimes. I'd vote for Graydon for President .

I've volunteered at the LA and San Jose tournaments a couple of times and that's how I've met just about every player (and chair umpire and line judge) that I know. That just means they recognize me when they see me, and some of them will even hug me (look at my signature). The offer for tickets just came up in conversation, when I wished someone luck in their next match and said I wouldn't be there, I was offered tickets, which was very nice and very helpful since I was too broke to buy any. But none of this happened instantly, its taken me a few events and a few years to get to this point.

jmgsdoubsprtnr
10-29-2004, 04:30 AM
all i have to say is you're the luckiest person i know! have you been to any futures events? if you have, is it worth it, cause that's about the closest thing to where i live, and i might go to one this summer if i get the chance. I still plan on going to Indy again, especially if my favorites (Enqvist, JMG) continue to go there. I just wish there was a tourney in Chicago!

Fee
10-29-2004, 06:30 AM
Let me know if you go to Indy next year and I'll have JMG keep an eye out for you, so to speak. He's usually very nice to the 'finions' that say hello to him at tournaments. I've been to one Challenger, in Calabasas this year. It was Graydon's first tournament back after his bogus suspension and he played doubles there with Travis Parrot. They won the final and I was very happy to be there for that. That's also where I met Alex B. I've heard Futures tournaments are very fun, and there are some recognizable names that play them (Zack is playing some right now because his ranking fell, and so is Donald Young, the alleged phenom). They are smaller and everyone seems to be more relaxed, players are usually just hanging around.

I am not the luckiest person out there, but I am very grateful to have met the guys that I've met and to speak to them when I can. Hope I get to see them all again next year.

yeah, he is popular, but there aren't that many people that write in here, like every day. and, there's only this one thread, when the other players usually have a lot of threads (picture threads, etc.). if we got more active and made a JMG picture thread, and "cheering for JMG in _____ tournament" threads, then maybe we can get one. it would be exciting!

I think JMG should have his own forum like the other players.

He is popular on this forum as they are...

Instead of being confined to this corner...

unfortunately 1 thread of less than 5 pages is not going to be enough for him to get his own forum, maybe if his form picks up again next year we'll be able to campaign for one, but at the moment we don't even keep this going so much yet :(

btw you're buttons are coming! i'll work on them tomorrow after work okay :)

I don't think he needs his own forum yet, not at this rate. There just isn't that much activity and he doesn't have that many fans here. It took ages to get this thread to five pages and I think most of the posts are from the same 3 or 4 people. Perhaps when he starts winning his matches and moving up the rankings again next season he will get more fans (I am the eternal optimist).

There was only one article about it, and according to that article he lost an 8 game set (I believe they used Team Tennis type scoring). He must not have been that enthused his play or something because he didn't seem to want to talk about it with me (and he was much more enthused about heading off to Hawaii).

Don't think JMG wants to have any more fans like me  Seriously, I try to be as positive and supportive of him as I can, but there are times I just want to shake him. This past season was a little bit rough, but you got love him because he never made excuses, he just worked harder and kept plugging away. Remind me when you go to Indy and I'll tell him to keep an eye out for you. You have a PM...

Who are his best friends on the tour ?

anton
11-26-2004, 01:18 AM
If you mean Jan-Michael I would say he would be pretty good friends with his brother Torrey who is(or was) on the tour. Also players tend to stay ok friends with people they play doubles with or knew or played doubles/mixed dobles with on tour or in the juniors(Andy Roddick, Jim Courier, Travis Parrott, Justin Gimblestob, Monica Seles, etc)

I think Brian McVahaly(sp) and a few other ATP players visit and hit with Gambill up in Spokane sometimes...

His best friend is probably his dad. Chuck Gambill is like Jan-Michael's shadow.

Fee
11-26-2004, 05:41 AM
Who are his best friends on the tour ?

His closest friends are Scott Humphries (who actually coached him after the US Open until the end of the year), the Bryan Brothers (he's known them since they were about 11, I think), Graydon Oliver, and Bryan Vahaly. He's pretty good friends with a number of others including Mahesh Bhupathi, Brian MacPhie, and Travis Parrott (he's known the Parrott family for ages). On the women's side, I think he's still pretty good friends with Lindsay Davenport and Monica Seles. That's all I can think of off the top of my head (people he's mentioned to me in the past or whatever).

Fee
11-27-2004, 10:39 PM
Well Sophie (which is also my cousin's name by the way), I wish I could see him more than I do. We met in 2002 at a tournament and he remembered me a few months later in 2003 when we saw each other in San Jose. I was lucky that year, I got to see him 5 times (San Jose, Indian Wells, flew to Houston tournament and he took care of my tickets for me, Los Angeles, and then I flew up to Portland for Superset to surprise him - and it worked). I only saw him twice this year (San Jose and Indian Wells, but we never spoke at IW). Lucky for me, we exchange emails and have IM chats from time to time, so he gives me info for my site and we talk about whatever comes up (oddly enough, we talk about cars a lot, I'm fascinated by his collection of Jaguars and this Aston Martin that he wants to buy). He sent me that picture from his vacation in Hawaii and that was very nice of him to do. Overall, he's a pretty good guy. Hopefully I'll see him again next year at least once. I'd like to see all my other 'tennis boys' too. I'm very fond of some of these guys.

And to celebrate your birthday too? Happy birthday!!!!!!! :wavey:
Thanks! yeah, we have a lot of birthdays in my family around thanksgiving... me, my sister, my dad, my mom, my uncle, and my aunt) so we just celebrate at thanksgiving. it's great!

What kind of Aston Martin does JMG want? i've always liked astons, and i think it's awesome that me and one of my favorite tennis players share a love for them. there are a few things that i can talk about for hours, and 2 of those things are tennis and cars. my favorite aston is the DB7 vantage, but i bet JMG likes the v12 vanquish... just a guess though. it's the more expensive of the 2, but they look similar.

i know i heard that JMG likes playing xbox in his time off (especially Halo), so do you know if he has Halo 2 yet? that's also something i like... i wish i could play with him... hehe it would be fun.

Fee
11-28-2004, 04:30 AM
He's wanted a DB9 for over a year now. I accused him of 'cheating' on Jaguar the first time he told me, so he won't always discuss it with me ( :D ). I think he's going to get it once his house is finished. He is definitely a videogame junkie, but he plays so many of them I would have to ask him what his favorite is these days. How good are you at Halo 2? You never know, you might end up playing him one day if you knew someone with connections...

jmgsdoubsprtnr
11-29-2004, 02:41 PM
i'm not the greatest at halo 2... i guess i just need more practice... yeah, that's it.

ooh, a db9? i'd take a ride in that any day!!

jmgsdoubsprtnr

wow, that's awesome! i wish i could get free tickets to tournaments!

Fee
12-02-2004, 05:24 AM
Well, it does save you a few pennies.

I had a press pass for Superset last year and JMG nearly fell over when he looked up and saw me there. I had a photo pass for Indian Wells this year, which was great fun, but incredibly distracting during JanMike's match against Roddick (I still have no real idea what happened in that match, need to watch the tape some day). It's kind of cool to go to the player interviews after their matches and everything, but it was too much work for me to try to keep track of all the action at IW, try to figure out which courts to go and photograph, and so on, so I don't think I'll be doing it anymore. I kind of decided to go to LA at the last minute in July, but I still managed to get my tickets covered. The most fun I've had at tournaments were the ones that I volunteered for, so you should definitely look in to doing that. That's how I met Andy back in 2002, and that led (indirectly) to meeting JMG, and then Graydon. The people you work with are usually pretty cool too.

jmgsdoubsprtnr
12-02-2004, 05:28 AM
i would, but there are a few problems...
1. a place to stay. i'd have to get a hotel, which would cost $ which i don't have.
2. i'd want to watch the tennis instead of working, so i'd probably end up getting fired. they'd catch on to me "volunteering" just so i could get in for free.

Fee
12-02-2004, 05:34 AM
The hotel is the hardest part of it, I always try to stay somewhere safe, but cheap. You wouldn't get fired for watching tennis. Most of the shifts are 4 hours and you just kind of 'hang around' after that. I bet you'll end up doing it some day.

I wished him all the best from you Fee, and asked how he's going... he said things are going good. I mean, he didn't say a great deal, but he looked quite happy.

The only thing that's gonna stop me from seeing him play tomorrow... is the Jarkko vs Clement(?) match :) I don't know if Jarkko can win, really... he only made it to the third round of quallies because his other two opponents retired!

The other thing I mentioned in my post (sent to oblivion?!) was, what's up with JMG and his ass?! Is it normal for him to pull his shirt up at the back, letting it hang at the front, before every point? Don't get me wrong, he has a lovely butt... but it was just so funny to see him doing it before the majority of points :haha:

Fee
01-08-2005, 05:45 PM
Yes, he does (and bless him for it!). He lifts his shirt up before EVERY point, when he's serving, when he's receiving, when he's playing doubles. It's a shirt thing, he prefers it untucked but has to lift it up so that it isn't pulling tight when he bends. I've actually had one or two people ask me to thank him for doing that and I always forget to.

He has almost as many twitches between points as Lleyton Hewitt. He wipes his face on his sleeves or he lifts his shirt to wipe his mouth (love that, did it right in front of me at Indian Wells and this odd sound came out of me that I have never been able to duplicate), adjusts his shorts, holds his racquet next to the ball in his left hand so he can shange his grip before serving, etc, etc. Burns a lot of calories between points I'm sure

lols soudns like jmg is merging the habbits of andy and mardy! mardy always adjust his shorts (at least i assume it's his shorts and not the lil fish) and andy always plays with shirt and cap! so jmg is just merging them altogether for good effect, clever guy :) maybe they should start placing bets on who can fidlle the most suring one match :)

1. I need a new banner for my message board. If you're up for it, I'll send you the pics I want to use.
2. Hold on. That schedule is tentative. Last year, he approved the schedule I sent him, changed the clay court tournaments, then changed them again. Then he added Newport Rhode, Island (and almost forgot to tell me) and decided not to play LA at the last moment. But, I'm pretty sure he will stick to the same schedule in England again this year becuase he usually gets a house for a month, so its worth it to play the full England swing.
3. If I know that a particular fan is going to be at a tournament, I usually let JMG know in advance. He's been pretty good about it in the past.

Thanks for the rep. Had to read it a few times to make sure you weren't saying something naughty

01-17-2005, 05:19 PM
The contract expired and wasn't renewed. He told me in October that he had signed with Prince, but asked me to withhold the info. He let me put it on my homepage at Christmas. I think he knew for a few months that adidas would not renew. They also dropped Kiefer (which surprised me, considering his current rank) and possibly a 3rd player, but I can't figure out who.

Gambill looking for resurrection

By Sandra Harwitt, Special to TennisReporters.net

Back in 2001, Jan-Michael Gambill was comfortably sitting at No. 14 in the world on the ATP computer. Nowadays, Gambill is struggling to rekindle the form that led him to be an integral part of the ATP’s original “New Balls, Please” campaign, where they introduced the public to the young stars they expected to make a big splash.

The 27-year-old Gambill has won three titles in his career: '99 Scottsdale, '01 and '03 Delray Beach. After an iffy season at best in 2004 – he reached four quarterfinals but for the first time since 1998 failed to reach a final – Gambill was hoping for a fresh start here at the Australian Open.

Unfortunately, Gambill was unable to negotiate past Japanese qualifier Takao Suzuki, the No. 203 player in the world, losing the match 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.

“I have been working very hard to try and get my game back on track,” Gambill told TennisReporters.net after his defeat. “Obviously, I was not playing that well, but I played a couple of good matches coming in here and I’ve been practicing very well. I feel like I’m starting to play decent tennis. I feel 100% I can get back to playing the way I used to so I’m not going to let this be a negative for me.”

For some around the game, one of Gambill’s biggest flaws has been sticking by his father, Chuck, as his coach instead of branching out to hear a different voice analyze his game. But Gambill remains loyal to dad and was off to discuss the match after his interview with TR.net.

His parting words were to offer an explanation as to why he keeps on keeping on. “I want to prove to myself that I can get back up there,” Gambill said. “Playing tennis can be fun and not fun, but it’s what I do and I love to do it. I want to give it my best. You know, you can play sports now until you’re 35 as Andre [Agassi] has shown us.”

Thanks Deb. Loyalty may be admirable, but I have to wonder if it is costing him matches....

Deboogle!.
01-17-2005, 08:38 PM
It seems like parent-child coaching relationships don't work that well. Look at the Williams sisters, I would say it very much hurts them, too, especially Venus. Didn't help Taylor Dent much... and the list goes on. It seems like the right balance of parental support and input yet the willingness to bring in outside coaches for their kids seems to work the best. but every person is different. And of course there's detrimental loyalty in other areas... one of the biggest things that really pisses me off about Andy is his fierce loyalty to a few tourneys who gave him a wildcard in 2001... now he plays the every year and some of them he should really give up (mainly Houston, but others too). I think that's cost him matches and especially ruined his clay court progress.

but JMG seems to have a good outlook on it and it sounds like his head is moving towards a better place... so hopefully he can work his way back. Where does he play next - Delray?

Fee
01-17-2005, 09:02 PM
Delray, but I'm really hoping he bails on the Aus doubles (probably can't get in anyway) and heads to Hawaii for the Waikoloa Challenger to get some damn points. He may be afraid that losing there will make things even worse, or he may want a week off, but I really, really think he should play there (and there's a good chance he was headed for that area anyway, he usually stops in Hawaii on his way home from Australia).

Last year JMG played some of his best tennis when he was getting coaching from other people (Nick Saviano, Scott Humphries). I really wish that Scott was with him this year, but I guess Mardy got him instead. I should stop thinking about this, I'm not getting much done today.

Take a week off and get ready to play the next 6 weeks in the US, on his best surfaces, at some of his favorite tournaments, with one of his favorite drivers taking care of him (wait, scratch that last bit).

Here's part of the post I put in the JMG thread in GM...

I had already sent him an email asking him what was up, and he replied in typical one sentence fashion (is that a guy thing or a tennis player thing?). Anyway, he said that he only used a one handed forehand for the match yesterday and did not use his 2 hander at all and this is a new thing for him. He sounds pretty positive about it all. I am intrigued and hope I get to see this for myself next week in San Jose (with my luck, I'll miss his matches somehow). I did become fond of that hideous 2-handed forehand of his after a while, when he sets up for it he can do wicked things. Trouble is, between the semi-chronic shin pain and his age (28 in June), his movement has become... well... uhm... 'less than efficient' and a one-handed FH can compensate for some of that (but only some, and he still needs to work on getting those 13 1/2's of his moving better).

So, we'll see...
