Davis Cup-Russians are better than us, says Forget

PARIS (Reuters) - France captain Guy Forget thinks the Russian players are better than his own going into this month's Davis Cup final clash in Paris.

"I sincerely believe that the Russians are better than us, on any surface," Forget said in an interview with sports daily L'Equipe on Wednesday.

But Forget, who won the Davis Cup as a player in 1991, added that Marat Safin, who demolished world number one Lleyton Hewitt in the Paris Masters final last Sunday, was more vulnerable on clay.

"I think that on clay, (Sebastien) Grosjean can beat (Yevgeny) Kafelnikov and Safin," he said.

Forget underlined the fact that the surface was not the most important factor.

"I said to the players: 'To me, the key is not the surface, it's you. I want a complete physical and psychological commitment.

"Then we have to keep in mind that we will beat the Russians if we are opportunist, ambitious and aggressive," Forget told the newspaper.

He also made it clear that he had not made up his mind about who would play on the Bercy clay courts.

"I'm not unveiling any secret when I say that Fabrice (Santoro) is systematically torn into pieces by Kafelnikov and that he leads Safin 6-1," Forget said when asked about Santoro's chances of playing in the singles.

"But we have to take the doubles into account".

Nicolas Escude and Santoro defeated Gustavo Kuerten and Cedric Pioline in the final of the Paris Masters Series on Sunday. The pair are still unbeaten and dropped only one set in seven matches.

I think Guy is kidding himself when he says Seb has a better chance against Marat on clay.

his best chance would be to stay at home :D

If this wasn't Kafels last chance, I would be all for the French.

So it hurts me, but I am rooting for Russian over France :o

By the way, I don't see why suggesting that Grosjean has a chance against Marat on Clay is such a ridiculous idea.

Yes, Marat beat an INJURED Grosjean at Roland Garros this year. Note the caps, and give the guy some respect.

I thought that this was just an image comment. It seems like in Davis Cup the opponent is always the favorite.

I happen to think that the French are scary. When they were playing the U.S., I was ambivalent because on one hand, I wanted the U.S. to lose because Andy and Pat annoy me, but on the other hand, I thought that if the U.S. would win, then I was sure Russia would win Davis Cup - plus, the final would actually get shown in the U.S.

The U.S. would have been an easy win, but the French are trouble. Yevgeny has had trouble with them when he was playing well, even taking into consideration that he's a different player at Davis Cup, they're certainly going to be tough to beat now. And Marat's mind can go off at any time for any reason. I think Marat has to absolutely be at the top of his game, and even then, there's a good chance Russia could lose.

The weight of this tie is going to depend on Marat - as already outlined.

He's going to have to win both his matches, or pray that Kafel comes back to life.

I think Forget is trying to be foxy ;)

And I also believe that doubles match will be crucial

frenchies were scared also of americans cos roddick and blake had some good results before DC semi instead frenchies were playing crappy.and Us team really thought they were going to beat France, and well i saw both teams practsing in RG and frenchies practised 10 times harder than americans and they prepared DC semi much better than americans.and i think french team is always very well prepared, they start to train 2 weeks before etc...will be russians so fit too?will Marat able to keep this marvelous form for one month?

I hope Marat keeps his hot streak. You have to remember that Marat is a pretty streaky player, in 2000 and 2001 he won a couple of tournaments in close succession and I hope that will happen also this year (fingers, toes crossed, heck cross everything).

Go Marat please, you have to help YK retire :D :D :D
