But it is former World No 1 Agassi, with four Australian Opens, two US Opens, one French Open title and one Wimbledon men's singles' crown to his name who will be one of the biggest stars to set foot on the Dubai tennis stage.

There are no bigger box office attractions than the flamboyant 34-year-old Vegas showman and his appearance in Dubai for the first time is a massive vote of confidence for the tournament.

"The name of Andre Agassi is up there with the likes of Perry, Laver, Borg, McEnroe and Sampras - he is a tennis living legend," said a delighted Colm McLoughlin, Managing Director of Dubai Duty Free, owners and organisers of the Dubai Tennis Championships.

"Not only is he one of the most popular players in tennis, he is also one of the greatest names in sport and still competing at the highest level. Having Andre play in Dubai for the first time truly underlines how the city has grown to become a sporting centre on par with anywhere in the world."

Agassi faces Stepanek in opener
By Edwin Ashie-Nikoi

20 February 2005

DUBAI — Exciting matches are on the cards in the first round pairings of the Dubai Duty Free-sponsored Dubai Open Tennis Championship which kicks off at the Dubai Tennis Centre tomorrow.

The 13th edition of the championship has attracted some of the biggest names in the sport including world’s top seed and defending champion Roger Federer of Switzerland, Australian Open champion, Marat Safin of Russia. But the biggest draw is Andre Agassi, four-time Australian Open, two-time US Open, one French and a Wimbledon champion.

According to the draw held at the Dubai Tennis Centre yesterday, Agassi, seeded fourth, faces 12th seeded Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic in their first round encounter. Two first round matches that tennis fans will be eagerly looking forward to are Safin and Nicolas Kiefer, winner of the 2000 edition, and Greg Rusedski against wild card entrant and third seed, Tim Henman in all-British encounter.

With Roger Federer and Agassi in the top half of the draw, there is a potential semifinal encounter between the two if they sail through to that stage. The same fate awaits Tim Henman and Marat Safin in the lower draw. Colm McLoughlin, managing director of Dubai Duty Free, owners of the championship speaking to the media during the draw said: “The men’s Open this year includes almost half of the world’s top 50 players. Once again we are delighted with the line up which includes some of the biggest names in world tennis.”

McLoughlin took the opportunity to welcome players, officials and members of the local, regional and international media on behalf of tournament patron General Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Minister of Defence.

The Dubai Tennis Championships, he said, has become a showpiece event for the Middle East. “With the world’s best players signed up we are all in for a spectacular two weeks of tennis,” McLoughlin said.

“We are proud of what the tournament has become and the appearance of some of the biggest names in world tennis further confirms the popularity of the championships among the players.”

And it is Agassi, with four Australian Opens, two US Opens, one French Open title and one Wimbledon men’s singles’ crown to his name who will be one of the biggest stars to set foot on the Dubai tennis stage. “There are no bigger box office attractions than the flamboyant 34-year-old Las Vegas showman and his appearance in Dubai for the first time is a massive vote of confidence for the tournament” he said.

McLoughlin disclosed that the DDF had been trying for a long time to bring Agassi to Dubai but could not make it because of other commitments. “He has agreed to come this year as he wants to play here before he retires.”

The presence of Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski, according to the managing director, is great for the tournament. “They have been fighting each other for many years to be top English players. I think it is a good fun for them to play in Dubai,” McLoughlin added.

Salah Tahlak, director of the tournament, was also delighted with the lineup for the championship this year. He also said it was a good effort to bring Agassi to the championship. Giving wild card to UAE top ranked player, Omar Behroozian, according to Salah, is a way to support tennis in the UAE. The announcement that Federer will return to defend his Dubai Tennis Championships crown also adds to the anticipation of the Men’s Open. Federer is chasing his third consecutive Dubai title and will make tournament history if he wins this year’s event.

The Swiss sensation is among the hottest properties on the tennis circuit and with 11 titles last season including three Grand Slams, the Tennis Masters Cup and three ATP Masters Series events, it is no wonder Federer is being mentioned among the game’s greats.

And Federer will be ready for a potential re-match against the big hitting Safin, whom he met in the first round of the Dubai tournament last year.

Agassi promises Dubai a fulfilling week of tennis

By Alaric Gomes, Staff Reporter

Dubai: Andre Agassi has promised tennis lovers of the UAE a fulfilling week here at the Dubai Duty Free Men's Open this week.

Andre Agassi hits during his afternoon practice at the Dubai Tennis stadium yesterday.
"There are a lot of stars and the fans here definitely need a great week of tennis," Agassi promised after practising on centre court yesterday afternoon. "I will try and play my best here," he added.

Arguably the most charismatic player of his generation, the American, 34, is a definite hot favourite wherever he goes. And Dubai is no different.

He arrived at Dubai International Airport late on Friday and headed straight to the centre court of the Dubai Tennis Stadium for a practice session with his coach Darren Cahill.

Yesterday, he was on centre court again hitting against Germany's Rainer Schuettler in the afternoon heat. Agassi returned at 5 pm to continue his practice session with Schuettler.

"I am feeling very good physically and mentally. The travelling has not affected me and I still feel I have the focus to go on," Agassi said.

The American has so far played in two tournaments this year, reaching the quarterfinals on both occasions.

He lost to Roger Federer in the last eight stage at the season opening Australian Open and bowed out at the same stage in the San Jose Open against Austrian Jurgen Melzer.

"This looks like a good arena for tennis. With the field, it looks like we are headed to a great week of tennis," Agassi noted.

Such under-par performances by his own high standards have seen Agassi slip into the 11th spot on the Indesit ATP Race position.

"I want to take one day at a time here," Agassi said.

"If I stick to this plan, I think I will be in a good position to advance in this competition," he added.

The American had a word of praise for all his fans, especially those who have rooted for him during his fantastic career.

"Thank you for all your support over the years," Agassi said.

Known to have Iranian roots, Agassi hoped he can stay here for a longer time. "I can do so only if I continue to win. I hope I can come here many times before the end of my career," he said.

This article i found on Dubai's site, is little bit old: Andre already won his first match

The wait is over

American superstar Andre Agassi will hit centre court at the Dubai Tennis Stadium tomorrow night for his first round encounter with Radek Stepanek from the Czech Republic. The game starts at 7pm on centre court.

[Please find attached a picture of Agassi from a media conference held at the Dubai Tennis Stadium today.] where is that pic???

"When you speak to people so many times, it doesn’t take much to get the desire to come here,” Agassi said. “It’s never been an ideal time for me, but at this stage I didn’t want to miss out on an opportunity to be here and experience it, and there was a window of opportunity and I was happy to take it.”

"I’ve been at the courts a couple of times a day so I haven’t had a chance to look around yet. But I’ve had a couple of nice dinners and managed to get the feel of it here. About eight of us have come over from Las Vegas to get what hopefully will not be a once in a lifetime experience."

Agassi advances at Dubai tennis

February 21, 2005

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (Ticker) - Andre Agassi took his first step toward ending Roger Federer's reign at the $1 million Dubai Tennis Championships.

Agassi, the No. 4 seed, survived his opening-round encounter with Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic, 6-4, 7-5 on Monday.

The 34-year-old Agassi advances to face the winner of Tuesday's matchup between Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan and Spain's Feliciano Lopez.

Agassi is hoping to get another crack at Federer, the world's top-ranked player. Federer, who is coming off a win in the finals at Rotterdam on Sunday, knocked off Agassi in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.

Federer meets qualifier Ivo Minar of the Czech Republic in the opening round.

Agassi advances, receives hero's welcome in Dubai

February 21, 2005
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- Andre Agassi defeated Radek Stepanek 6-4, 7-5 on Monday in his first ever appearance at the Dubai Open, earning a standing ovation from the largest crowed to see a tennis event in the United Arab Emirates.

The fourth-seeded Agassi delighted the capacity crowd in the 5,000-seat Dubai Tennis Stadium, winning the first-round match in two hours and apologizing for not playing the tournament earlier in his career.

``I have had a few great days here in Dubai,'' the eight-time Grand Slam winner said. ``I have waited a long time to be here, and I must apologize for being so late.''

Agassi plays first ever match in Middle East

February 21, 2005
DUBAI (AFP) - Andre Agassi, the son of an Olympic boxer from Iran, played his first competitive match in the Middle East when he beat Radek Stepanek 6-4, 7-5 in the first round of the Dubai Open.

Agassi found it hard to experience this as a return to near his roots, but certainly felt a strong rapport with an enthusiastic first day full house, something which helped lift him to his most encouraging performance of the year so far.

The 34-year-old moved with remarkable nimbleness, despite the hip problem which has required an injection straight into the nerve. He also served superbly, winning 80 percent of his first delivery points and 76 percent of those on his second.

It was this, at least as much as his famous return of serve, which enabled him to stoke up the pressure upon an opponent who has been in some of the best form of his life, and who played another good match here.

"I tell you it's been a great few days. I'm so glad I've finally come here," said Agassi, who has been on the tour for almost two decades. "I am sorry I have never been before. Now I have been here it's going to be more."

This remark however may be less a suggestion that Agassi is going to continue his tennis career into 2006, by which time he will be 36, but more a veiled reference to business, possibly property deals, which may be an additional reason for his presence.

"Coming from Las Vegas I have a history of appreciating what it means for someone to dream, and to believe it and go out and make it happen," Agassi said, using words which could suggest a lengthy association with the city of gold.

"It's an incredible thing to see that here in Dubai they have that vision and passion to execute something enough to dare to dream."

But Agassi probably will not yet be dreaming of a semi-final rematch with world number one Roger Federer, his quarter-final conqueror at the Australian Open last month.

Despite an encouraging performance, it was not until the final game of the first set that he managed to break Stepanek, and in the second set he had to make a break back after losing his service game to go 3-4 down.

Both times he owed something to errors from his opponent, albeit under cumulative pressure, and Agassi may need to raise his standard still higher even to reach the last four.

"It was a good work out to say the least," he said. "It was a pretty high standard match. He raised his game in the second set and it forced me to raise mine. But I will have to go on doing that."

Just what IS the nature of the hip injury that's plagued Andre the last 2 years?

Is it structural - the joint, ligaments, etc, in which case he might as well retire? Or is it that the wear and tear make him chronically sore at his old age?

Agassi Thrills Sold-Out Crowd At Dubai Tennis Championships

Andre Agassi thrilled a sell-out crowd of more than 5000 when he earned a 6-4 7-5 victory over Radek Stepanek in the first round of the Dubai Tennis Championships on Monday night.

It was the first time the 34-year old legend had ever played in the Middle East, and he was delighted at the reception he received.

"It was a pretty exciting atmosphere out there," said Agassi. "When you haven't played somewhere before you don't know what to expect, but out there today there was great enthusiasm and I was very flattered how many people were there.

"I didn't come over here with too many expectations, but I wanted to experience it at first hand. I can only tell you the things I've heard from other players, and it's all been so positive.

"Needless to say, the strength of the field is testament not just to the tournament but also the city and what it offers."

Agassi took the first set by breaking in the 10th game, but then dropped his serve at 3-3 in the second.

But instead of holding on to his lead, Stepanek hit three double-faults in the next game as Agassi leveled at 4-4, and the American broke again for the match when his Czech opponent netted a volley.

"It was a good workout, to say the least," said Agassi. "I thought it was a pretty good standard match. He's an awkward player because he knows the court really well and you never quite know when he's going to be aggressive or play good defense. I had to be careful in the second set because he raised his game and made me do the same."

DUBAI, UAE - FEBRUARY 22: In preparation for the Dubai Duty Free Men's Open Andre Agassi hits a tennis ball from the world's most unique tennis court, the Helipad of the Burj Al Arab, the world's most luxurious hotel on February 22, 2005, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Standing 321 metres high on a man made island, the majestic Burj Al Arab is without doubt the most recognizable hotel in the world. The hotel's helipad, which is situated 211 metres high covers a surface area of 415 square metres. Roger Federer is the reigning champion of the Dubai Duty Free Men's Open and is making his third appearance in the tournament. For Agassi this is his first time to appear in the ATP tournament where he has already progressed to the second round having beaten Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic. Lopez keen to duel with Agassi
February 23, 2005 - 6:09AM

Feliciano Lopez beat Paradorn Srichaphan to earn a second-round clash with Andre Agassi at the $US1 million ($A1.3 million) Dubai Tennis Championship Men's Open.

Thailand's Paradorn, hoping to make up for the 0-2 deficit in career meetings against Spaniard Lopez, was hindered by a fever, losing 2-6, 6-3, 3-6 in one hour and 43 minutes.

Lopez, who took a set off Roger Federer before succumbing in the 2004 Dubai Tennis Championship final, was eagerly looking forward to his meeting with Agassi.

"It is going to be an exciting match," said Lopez.

"I am really looking forward to the match."

Lopez predicted packed stands and a great atmosphere for his showdown with the American, saying: "It is one of the matches that I have always wanted to play."

The two last met in Madrid in 2002, where Agassi won 7-6 (8), 6-7 (10), 7-5.

"I was prepared for him but I just couldn't do anything with his serve," Agassi said at the time.

Lopez knows he has to serve well again to compete with the veteran.

"I have to serve really well," said Lopez.

"I have to be there in the match all the time because he is one player who is always there, fighting every point, he is always focused. So I have to be there fighting every point as well."
--------------------------------------------
Don't worry Feliciano, Andre also will serve well!
Andre will beat you well, Feliciano... ;)

THAT'S WHAT YOU CALL A DROP VOLLEY
Feb 23 2005

WELCOME to the only tennis court in the world where the ballboys have to wear parachutes.

Wimbledon champ Roger Federer and legend Andre Agassi showed off their range of 700-feet-above-the-ground strokes when they practised on the helipad of Dubai's amazing Burj Al Arab hotel. Tim Henman couldn't make it - he's not used to hitting the heights. The stage for the stunt gave a new meaning to the phrase 'drop shot'. And even though Roger is used to heights - he's Swiss, after all - he didn't take too many risks when he was anywhere near the edge.

The stars are in town for Dubai's men's open event. And they couldn't pass up the chance to sample the world's only seven-star hotel, where the service is said to be faster than any you'll ever see on a tennis court.

Agassi advances in Dubai

February 23, 2005
DUBAI (AFP) - US veteran Andre Agassi coasted into the quarter-finals of the Dubai Open.

Agassi, who turns 35 years in April, outplayed 23-year-old Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 6-1, 6-3 in their second round tie.

"I felt like it could have turned into a difficult match," said the American. "If you let Feliciano play on his terms he can control it with his forehand and he becomes quite effective.

"I had to execute my shots and not take too many chances, and I felt very comfortable from the beginning," Agassi added.

He next plays Nikolay Davydenko, the improving sixth-seeded Russian, who overcame Slovak Dominik Hrbaty, 7-5, 6-3.

Also into the quarter-finals is Nicolas Kiefer, who upset Australian Open champion Marat Safin in the first round.

But the German had to battle for an hour and three-quarters while coming from behind to beat Hyung Taik-Lee of South Korea 2-6, 6-1, 6-3.

That was a really good win for Andre. I wish I could have seen it, but the score suggests he was playing flawless and aggressive.
Davydenko is just solid from both backhand and forehand sides but he has no real weapons. He's been playing really well though. That match will tell me how well Andre is really playing.
Meanwhile, Federer is hanging by a thread, he could have lost his last two matches. It seems he's not playing his best right now. I think he and Andre will still meet in the semis though. Seems like fate.

Agassi giành chiến thắng đầu tiên tại Dubai

http://vnexpress.net/Vietnam/The-thao/Tennis/2005/02/3B9DB9DF/Agassi.jpg

Agassi storms to Dubai quarter-finals

Andre Agassi showed no sign of his age as the 34-year old crushed Spain's Feliciano Lopez 6-1 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals. The American will next face Nikolay Dadydenko of Russia. Agassi is in the United Arab Emirates to try to boost his confidence ahead of his return to Davis Cup next week.

http://www.eurosport.co.uk/imgbk/tennis/all/big_md-i175473.jpg

Agassi was always in control against the left-handed Lopez, sweeping to a 4-0 lead in the opening set and winning most of the longer rallies.

Although Lopez offered more resistance in the second set and held a break point at 4-3, he made a backhand error and was broken to love in the next game before Agassi served out to seal the win.

"I felt it could have turned into a difficult match," said Agassi.

"There's no question that if you let Feliciano play on his terms, which is to control it with his forehand, he becomes quite effective.

"I really had to execute my shots and make sure that I stayed in control of the point but didn't take too many chances. I felt very comfortable from the beginning."

Andre Agassi Visits Dubai Duty Free

http://216.133.247.146/tennis/www/images/newpic_39.jpg
Dubai, UAE, February 24, 2005: Tennis superstar Andre Agassi took some time out of his busy schedule to make a special visit to the award-winning Dubai Duty Free at the Dubai International Airport.

Agassi, who met with Dubai Duty Free Managing Director Colm McLoughlin, spent an hour browsing through the shops and learnt about the operation which last year saw sales surpass US$500 million (Dhs1.8 billion). He was particularly interested in the "Gifts from Dubai" shop which stocks traditional Arabian memorabilia. He also took a look at the Gold shop and lingered for a while over the gold earrings.

Mr McLoughlin said: "We are delighted that Andre took the time to visit the duty free and as the owners and organizers of the Dubai Duty Free Men's Open we are thrilled that he is playing at the tournament for the first time."

Andre Agassi, whose father is from Iran, is certainly enjoying his time in the United Arab Emirates. Following his visit to Dubai Duty Free, the American showman made his way to Burj Al Arab where he had a tennis practice with Roger Federer on a special court on top of the hotel's helipad, some 211 metres high.

Robredo, Ljubicic reach semis; Federer, Agassi get postponed
Dubai, United Arab Emirates (Sports Network) - Fifth-seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo and eighth-seeded Croat Ivan Ljubicic secured semifinal berths, while current world No. 1 Swiss Roger Federer and former No. 1 American Andre Agassi had their quarterfinal matches postponed on a rainy Friday at the lucrative Dubai Open.

Robredo took out former Dubai titlist Nicolas Kiefer 6-4, 6-4, while the surging Ljubicic toppled third-seeded Brit Tim Henman 7-5, 6-4 in quarterfinal action in between rain drops at Dubai Tennis Stadium. The German Kiefer captured this tournament in 2000 and was the runner-up in 1999.

The top-seeded Federer was scheduled to meet seventh-seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny, while the fourth-seeded Agassi was slated to face sixth-seeded Russian Nikolay Davydenko on Day 5, but the weather failed to cooperate and those matches are now part of Saturday's schedule.

Federer is the two-time defending Dubai champion. He beat Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in last year's hardcourt finale here. The Swiss star is also fresh off his title in Rotterdam last week, when he beat Ljubicic in a three-set final.

Weather permitting, Robredo will battle Ljubicic in one semifinal on Saturday, while the other semi will pit the Federer-Youzhny winner against the Agassi- Davydenko victor. More rain, however, is in the forecast.

The big-serving Ljubicic is 1-0 lifetime against Robredo, with the victory coming on red clay in Monte Carlo last season.

Ljubicic is already a sizzling 19-5 this year and has reached three finals (0-3).

The winner of this $975,000 event will collect $187,500.

Did he really play that bad, or was Federer just too good?

Sometimes you've got to give credit where credit is due.

Federer is not a good matchup for Andre. He can hit the ball as hard as Andre from both sides plus he has a stronger serve and moves better. The match was also indoors, which also favors Federer. Andre is a guy who will expose an opponent's weaknesses if they have any. Federer has almost no weaknesses.

I think it's unrealistic to think Andre can move him from side to side like he does against most other guys. He looked great this week agains Davydenko, Lopez. He was playing good tennis. Federer was just surviving his matches and not playing his best, but he found his best against Andre. I think Andre's power doesn't bother him

Federer is just great. End of the story.
