MADRID, Feb 18 (Reuters) - The experienced Albert Costa has been recalled to Spain's Davis Cup team for their first round tie against Slovakia next month.

The new two-man coaching team of Juan Bautista Avendano and Jordi Arrese drafted in the 29-year-old former French Open winner in the absence of Carlos Moya, Juan Carlos Ferrero and Tommy Robredo. They also named Fernando Verdasco for the first time.

Costa was a member of the team that won the Davis Cup for the first time in Barcelona in 2000, but was dropped ahead of the 2003 final against Australia.

"Albert can help bring his experience of the Davis Cup to a good, young team," Avendano told Spain's Radio Marca. "It promises to be a difficult tie, but I believe we can win it.

Rafael Nadal, Feliciano Lopez and Verdasco, who is more used to the faster surface that will be used on the indoor courts in Bratislava, make up the rest of the team for the March 4-6 tie.

Moya withdrew from this season's competition in order to concentrate on playing tournaments after helping Spain to victory in last year's final against the United States.

Ferrero and Robredo asked to be left out of the first round tie in order to regain their form after injury.

"Ferrero wanted to regain his ranking and form by playing individual tournaments, while Tommy is still trying to recover his form after his shoulder injury," said Avedano.

Because I loathe their captains so much,they insulted my 2 spanish big faves last year,you know,it's soooo hurt. :smoke: After that I cheer against this team.Also I only care for their health,their bodies are not very strong,now I think Tommy and Juan should only concentrate on their Atp matches,it's enough for them. :o

I still keep thinking that the captains tried to make the best choice for the team to win, and I understood why they prefered Nadal over Ferrero in that moment. Yeah, but probably not any better than Verdasco will do against Hrbaty. I imagine they'll play him Sunday, unless Verdasco is amazing and beat Hrbaty.

I find his scheduling decision... surprising. He could have played the first three weeks of the clay swing instead of the last three. Oh well.

The only player on this team who made a bad scheduling decision is Verdasco. He followed Lopez around instead of playing on clay, where he may have actually won some.

Nadal knows he's better on clay and won two titles. He made no mistakes in his schedule.

That said, I think that having played on fast surfaces in the past weeks, Verdasco IS the better choice.

I think that Beck vs. Lopez begins at 8am New York time. So I'll be here then.
