Henman waits as lawyers step in
By John Parsons (Filed: 05/11/2002)

Tim Henman was keeping his options open last night should he get a late call-up for the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai next week as International Tennis Federation and ATP Tour officials wrangled over who should be on standby.

"Until Tim is officially invited to be the alternate he's not committing himself one way or the other," said a spokesperson for his management company. "But I don't think he will go to Shanghai unless he knows he's definitely playing."

While most people have been telling the British No 1 he would be better advised to stay at home, nursing his damaged shoulder - and spending time with his daughter born last month - the temptation to play if the chance is there is equally understandable.

Lawyers for both sides have been consulted as the Association of Tennis Professionals and the ITF debated whether Henman, as the next highest ranked candidate, or Thomas Johansson, as winner of the Australian Open, should be the first reserve to fill any gap in the eight-man field.

ATP officials say Henman. The ITF insist that when they agreed to merge the Grand Slam Cup with the Masters Series Championships, it was agreed that the last qualifying place and the first reserve position would go to the highest available Grand Slam winner listed among the top 20 who had not qualified on merit.

Albert Costa, the French Open champion, has been given the wild card. The ATP, who believe that only the first two highest placed non-qualifying Grand Slam winners should be alternates, were last night trying to contact Pete Sampras, the US Open champion, in case he has changed his mind about not wishing to play again this year.

Only then will Henman or Johansson - and possibly both - be asked to travel.

what a mess. i'd give it to Johansson -- at least he won a Slam this year. what is up with Henman? dammit, his shoulder is a mess and he just had a baby. bow out Tim, stay home and let Thomas get yet another chance to show us what a fluke his Aussie win was. it's not like Tim won Wimbledon or anything...

 Asses.

I agree with TC somewhat, Tim shouldn't be trying to push so hard when he has other things in his life demanding his attention. Plus, playing with an injured shoulder could put his 2003 in serious jeopardy.

Although Tim is not my favorite player, I have high regards for him. I cannot imagine :( why he wants to travel to Shanghai (across half the world?) being a standby while he has a new born baby daughter at home and he is nursing his shoulder.

Tim, you really gets a thumb down as a father and a husband!

I also think that Tim shouldn't go, just bcos he needs to heal his body. But if he decided to go, I don't think he should be judged as a bad father or anything like that. I mean, it's just one week and if he's going, it's not like he's abandoning his family. In a normal job, ppl goes on business travel even if they have a new born at home. I think we should be fair.

If Tim is not a standby, I can understanding why he wants to go. I support him when he played in TM Madrid and Paris when his daughter was born.

When my son was born, my husband managed to take a month off to support me even though he was the leader in a major development project for a customer in Montreal. (We were living in Calgary at that time) After that month, he was away almost half of the time for nine months but how I treasured that month.

If they'll need someone to fill maybe a place, it should be Johansson, he may not have great results after the AO, but anyway, come on, he won a GRAND SLAM.

The official site has announced Johanson is the alt.

End of story.

It's probably a good idea for Tim to rest his shoulder anyway

I am confused. Is Costa going?

There are only 8 players in Shianghai, right?
1. Hewitt
2. Agassi
3. Safin
4. Ferrero
5. Moya
6. Federer
7. Novak
8. Johansson

Where is the place for Costa? Please explain to me.

Costa is one of the 8 players. Johansson is standby in case one of the 8 players has to withdraw before the tourny starts.

I see.
Thanks leecal.
I think those 8 players are all in good shape. Mr. Johansson probably gets just a free Shianghai tour.

Actually, unlike other tournaments, I think in the Master Cup, the alternate can play even after the tourny starts in the round-robin stage should any player retires due to injury. The alternative can advance even if he hasn't completed all 3 matches.

Remember that each match win gets you race/ranking points, not to mention a lot of $$$. :D
