OK, thanks for the heads up then, I'll try to avoid dissing golf too often on this thread! ;)

Ouch, must have been tough for her.... the pressure must be quite immense, unlike many other sports, you can't "come back" from a suboptimal start, you get dinged for every flaw...

LOL... well, I have no mobile phone, so I am not 100% sure about doing SMS....

I know Australia's country code is "61" that has to go somewhere, but, besides that....
Does your phone book have a section somewhere with all the country codes, they should explain there precisely how to make a call overseas, hopefully doing text will just be a simple extension of that?

Sorry I can't be of more help. :(

you have to do something before the 61 (which your phone book should tell you exactly what to dial)

then after that the area code (mine is 3, for example, hers will be different), then the phone number. (well, that works for those ancient old-fashioned things called fixed residential phones anyway LOL I don't think I have ever attempted to ring a mobile in another country)

And for everyone who would be interrested in it, here is the letter he wrote befor he commited suicide (you might already read it, but I'm just posting it cos I'm bored)

To Boddah pronounced

Speaking from the tongue of an experienced simpleton who obviously would rather be an emasculated, infantile camplainee. This note should be pretty easy to understand. All the warnings from the punk rock 101 courses over the years. Since my first introduction to the, shall we say, ethics involved with independence and the embracement of your community has proven to be very true. I haven't felt the exitement of listening to as well as creating music along with reading and writing for too many years now. I feel guilty beyond words about these things. For example when we're backstage and the lights go out and the manic roar of the crowd begins it doesn't affect me the way in which it did for Freddy Mercury who seemed to love. (?)relish in the love and adoration from the crowd. Which is something I totally admire and envy. The fact is I can't fool you. Any one of you. It simply isn't fair to you or me. The worst crime I can think of would be to rip people off by faking it and pretending as if I'm having 100% fun. Sometimes I feel as if I should have a punch in time clock before I walk out on stage. I've tried everything within my power to appreciate it, (and I do. God, believe me I do, but it's not enough. I appreciate the fact that I and we have affected and entertained a lot of people. I must be one of those narcissists who only appreciate things when they're gone. I'm too sensitive. I need to be slightly numb in order to regain the enthusiasm I once had as a child. On our last three tours I've had a much better appreciation for all the people I've known personally and as fans of our music, but I still can't get over the frustration, the guilt and empathy I have for everyone. There's good in all of us and I think I simply love people too much. So much that it makes me feel too fucking sad. The sad little, sensitive, unappreciative, pisces, Jesus man! Why don't you just enjoy it? I don't know. I have a goddess of a wife who sweats ambition and empathy and a daughter who reminds me too much of what I used to be. Full of love and joy kissing every person she meets because everyone is good and will do her no harm. And that terrifies me to the point to where I can barely function. I can't stand the thought of Frances becoming the miserable self-destructive, death rocker that I've become. I have it good, very good, and I'm grateful, but since the age of seven I've become hateful towards all humans in general. Only because it seems so easy for people to get along, and have empathy. Empathy! Only because I love and feel for people too much I guess. Thank you all from the pit of my burning nauseous stomach for your letters and concern during the past years. I'm too much of an erratic, moody baby! I don't have the passion anymore and so remember, its better to burn out than to fade away.
Peace, love, empathy.
Kurt Cobain

Frances and Courtney, I'll be at your alter.
Please keep going Courtney
for Frances
for her life which will be so much happier
without me. I Love you. I love you!

Yeah I think i'll be ok! What I'll probably end up doing is drop AP Chem 12 and just take Chem 12... although I hear Chem 11 is harder than Chem 12 but if I only take Chem 11 it would be weird to then take AP Chem 12... so I dunno what I'll do! I'll wait and see where my AP Bio and/or AP Physics end up because I would never be able to handle thee AP science courses in one semester!

The lady who teaches Chem here is awesome. She's the only black teacher (besides my college Government professor) in my school, and she's soooooo funny. She and I get along really well. I have to pass by her room to get to my locker, and we always talk smack to each other. She chased me down the hall the other day. :p

My year this year is great... i still don't have any specific sciences or AP classes... last year, however, is a different story! I'll have AP Math, AP Chem, AP Bio, AP Physics and AP French... all grade 11 classes. Then AP Chem 12. What else will I have? Oh English... and then an elective? Geo 11 or Law 12 I guess... depends on how the shedule is made I guess

Nick's Picks: Day 13
by Nick Bollettieri
Friday, September 6, 2002

Nick Bollettieri is the president and founder of the Bollettieri Tennis Academy at IMG Academies in Bradenton, Fla. He has been coaching for nearly five decades and has helped develop eight world champions. Some of the tennis superstars who have studied under Nick include Andre Agassi, Monica Seles, Tommy Haas, Jim Courier and Anna Kournikova. (Click here to read the full biography of this tennis legend.)

Nick will be offering his thoughts on a variety of matches throughout the 2002 US Open. Here are his picks for Saturday, Sept. 7:

PETE SAMPRAS #6 VS. SJENG SCHALKEN #24

Pete Sampras was No. 1 in the world for six years and considered the best player of all time, but for the last two years he has been in a lull. Then POW!!! He showed why his name is "Pistol Pete," firing service bombs to dominate Andy Roddick Thursday night. Sjeng hung around long enough to beat the new Chileman Fernando Gonazalez. When the match was on the line, Sjeng was stronger mentally and claimed the fifth-set tiebreaker, 7-2.

What has made a big difference for Pete is serving excellence. His first serve is strong as usual, but what looks much sharper is his second serve. He is hitting second-serve aces, placing the ball exceptionally well and has a low number of double faults. To add to the serve, Pete is a step quicker and more balanced.

Sjeng looks like he is doing nothing, but, somehow, he finds away to win. His world-class backhand groundstroke and superb physical fitness have carried him through to the US Open semifinals.

Nick's Pick: Sampras shuts the door on Schalken, winning in 3 sets.

ANDRE AGASSI #6 VS. LLEYTON HEWITT #1

This will be like a boxing match. Two steely competitors duking it out in what will be a "Smash in Arthur Ashe."

Lleyton is the world's No. 1 player and defending US Open champion. He does not care whom he plays, what the fans say about him or how well his opponents hit the ball. All he cares about is what happens inside the lines. Lleyton has great speed, a rock-solid return and loves to compete. In this match he will run every ball down, trying to wear Andre down.

Andre is 32 years old and knows what it takes to win the US Open. After 17 years of playing on tour, he has really found balance in his life. Steffi Graf, his son Jaden Gil, Gil Reyes and Darren Cahill have played a big part in this success.

Here is how the match looks punch by punch:

Age: Andre, 32, Lleyton 21
Grand Slams: Andre 7, Lleyton 2
Groundstrokes: There is no apparent weakness for either player. Andre is stonger, Lleyton is faster.
Serve: Andre will serve a higher percentage, Lleyton will serve more aces.
Volley: Lleyton is much more comfortable at the net. Lleyton won the US Open doubles championship in 2000.
Overhead: Andre is stronger and more powerful.
Return of Serve: Lleyton makes a higher percentage of returns.
Fitness: Andre is in the best shape of his life, but there is an age difference of 11 years.
Mentally: Both players are very strong. There will be no breakdown on either side.

Nick's Pick: Agassi delivers a knockout punch in the 4th set.  ( OMG! Bollettieri picked his former pupil)

Pffffff  Lleyton better beat DH. All these fucking experts are making me mad.

4 SETS to DH! Pfffff  Whatever Lleyt will prove them wrong as long as his 1st serve is on I believe he'll win. Could someone please sacrifice DH in the minger thread :p :D What's up, well I should be sleeping now :o But even though it's an all pred affair  The final is on @ such a ridiculous time that no-one will watch it here (Besides the die hard pred fanz :o) Itz on 2am in the morning  i'll be tucked up soundly in bed while the Preds do whatever the hell it is they do hit the ball hard or summing..:o :p

Laver salutes super Hewitt

By PAUL MALONE
07sep02

AUSTRALIAN tennis legend Rod Laver has branded Lleyton Hewitt "super-human" and believes he will welcome Hewitt to an elite club of men to win Wimbledon and the US Open in the same year.

Laver said yesterday he expected Hewitt's fitness and desire to help him overcome veteran Andre Agassi in the semi-finals and become the Sixth man in the Open era to capture the sport's two biggest titles in the same year.

"It's not that Andre is too old, but he could be tired late in the second week and this is where Lleyton starts to wear down his opponents," said Laver, who won the "double" in 1969, the year of his unique second calendar-year Grand Slam.

"I think Lleyton has to be favoured," he said. "As a competitor, there is none better than Lleyton. He is super-human. He showed that by how he fought his way back against Wimbledon (to win a quarter-final against Dutchman Sjeng Schalken) and he is so confident."

Hewitt said his two wins against Agassi in as many matches this year could be "thrown out the window" as a factor in their showdown tomorrow morning because it will be their first career encounter at a best-of-five-sets distance.

Pete Sampras said: "It's going to be a classic. They're going to have a lot of great rallies."

He declined to tip a winner.

Laver said Agassi, 32, would probably eventually struggle with the mobility and retrieval skills which he thinks separates Hewitt from his rivals.

"Andre is such a clean hitter, but from a mental standpoint, Lleyton wants to win every point and I felt that way when I played," Laver said. "Being this good at this age, he will get a lot stronger and he's going to be a great champion."

Hewitt would join Laver, Jimmy Connors (twice), John McEnroe (twice), Boris Becker and Sampras (twice) as men to have pocketed the Wimbledon and US Open plums in the same year.

The Australian said he had not thought about his place in tennis history if he kept chasing down grand slam titles.

"It doesn't even enter my mind. I'm not even going to go close to putting myself in the same category as Laver, Sampras, Agassi, whoever," Hewitt said.

"I'm not putting anything on myself to win the most slams or whatever. If it comes, it comes.

"It's beyond my wildest dreams what I have done at the age of 21. I don't sort of worry about what other people think or put a tag on you."

Agassi has gained knowledge of Hewitt's improving game during 2002 from his San Jose and Cincinnati losses to the world No. 1, the merican's coach Darren Cahill said.

"Every time Andre plays Lleyton, he seems to learn a little more about Lleyton's game," said Cahill, the Australian who coached Hewitt to his maiden major title in New York last year.

"Andre's a complete professional and he's so fit because his work ethic hasn't dropped one bit."

Hewitt's Davis Cup team mate Todd Woodbridge feared Agassi's form in New York indicated he would end Hewitt's run of 17 US Open wins in 18 matches.

"I think Andre has looked better and is a little bit of a favourite," Woodbridge said.

"But every time I have ever thought something about Lleyton, he has come back to prove me wrong and I hope he proves me wrong again."

What a compliment from Rocket Rod Laver! :D Lleyton gets so much support from all the former aussie greats. I'm so proud of him.

Acadians in Nova Scotia

Today over 40,000 Nova Scotian Acadians can be found in several regions: Clare in Digby Co.; Argyle in Yarmouth Co.; Pomquet near Antigonish; Larry's River in Guysborough Co.; Isle Madame and nearby villages in Richmond Co.; Cheticamp, St. Joseph du Moine and Magre in Inverness Co.; and the urban regions of Halifax-Dartmouth and Sydney. A few thousand Acadians are from across the province. (I know where you live, Angele. :o :p )

The Acadians are descendants of approximately 100 French families who settled along the shores of the Baie francaise (now the Bay of Fundy) during the 17th century. (Only 100? Y'all are more inbred than we are in the South! :o :p) A distinct Acadian culture gradually evolved. The Acadians fished and farmed, and claimed valuable farmlands from the bay by building dykes. A sense of community life and independence grew as they worked together to survive. By 1750, the population of Acadia had exceeded 10,000.

It was not long, however, before the Acadians were embroiled in the French-British territorial disputes. In 1755, fearing that the Acadians would support the French, the British government demanded that they sign an unconditional oath of allegiance to the Crown. Most refused, wishing to remain neutral. The infamous Acadian Expulsion resulted. From 1755, over 8,000 Acadians were deported to New England, to the southern colonies (Louisiana! :D ) and to Europe (France and England).

The Acadians were allowed to return to Nova Scotia in 1764. However, the fertile lands they had worked were now occupied by other settlers. Since the British would not allow the Acadians to form large settlements, they gradually settled along the various remote coastal regions of the province.

The Federation acadienne de la Nouvelle-Ecosse (FANE) serves as representative for the Acadian population of Nova Scotia. It undertakes community development in Acadian regions. Most Acadians now in their thirties and above have been educated in English. Today, many schools within the various Acadian regions have been designated as Acadian or partially Acadian. The College de l'Acadie offers technical and vocational programs through an advanced distance education system. Six learning centres have been established throughout the province. Another institution, l'Universite Sainte-Anne in Pointe-de-l'Eglise, is the only francophone university in Nova Scotia.

French media such as radio, television, and newspaper are essential in regional development in isolated areas of the province. Le Courier de la Novelle-Ecosse, the francophone provincial newspaper, is published weekly in Yarmouth. La Societe Radio-Canada (French CBC) broadcasts from Halifax a three-hour radio show, "Bonjour Atlantique", five days a week. Radio-CIFA broadcasts both in Clare and Argyle municipalities, while Radio-Cheticamp will soon be on the air full-time.

The Conseil culturel acadien can be proud of its many achievements: co-production with Societe Radio-Canada of many cultural television programs. Acadian Days in Grand-Pre, development of distribution networks for Acadian audio products, promotion of visual arts and crafts and a provincial song contest.

Acadian culture is well and alive in Nova Scotia. In the summer, visitors can attend many Acadian festivals, as there are several of them across the province from May to August. For more information about Acadians in Nova Scotia, please contact the Acadian Federation at FANE, 1106 South Park Street, Halifax, NS, B3H 2W7. Phone: (902) 421-1772, Fax: (902) 422-3942

A brief history of the Acadians of Nova Scotia

In 1542, Italian explorer Verazzano named part of the eastern coast of North America Arcadia, after the pastoral region of Ancient Greece immortalized in Greek poetry. That coastal region is what is now Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and part of Maine. Over the years, the name changed to Acadia.

In the 17th century, there were a hundred French families in Acadia. The Acadians had a strong sense of community and gradually developed their own culture. They stayed out of disputes between the French and the British and developed friendly relations with the Aboriginal peoples, learning their hunting and fishing techniques. (Too bad y'all didn't settle America. There might be more Native Americans left. :o )

In the early 18th century, the British government, doubting the neutrality of the Acadians, demanded that they swear allegiance to the British Crown. The issue would cause discord for decades to come. In 1755, British Governor Charles Lawrence decided to settle the matter once and for all by deporting the Acadians from Nova Scotia and dispersing them among the 13 English colonies, from Massachusetts to Georgia.

In 1764, the Acadians were granted permission to return to Nova Scotia; however, they were prohibited from settling in any one area in numbers great enough to form a self-sufficient society. The Acadians therefore spread out along the Nova Scotia coast and remain scattered across Nova Scotia to this day. The greatest concentrations of Acadians are in the following regions: Argyle, Chéticamp, Clare, Annapolis Valley, Halifax-Dartmouth, Pomquet, Richmond and Sydney. (I still know where you live, Angie. :p )

Water and green hills: the region's geography

Nova Scotia is a peninsula surrounded by four bodies of water: the Atlantic Ocean, the Bay of Fundy, Northumberland Strait and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. It is larger in area than Denmark and slightly smaller than Scotland.

One is therefore never far from the sea in Nova Scotia. Visitors to the province delight in the myriad of peaceful ports and beaches, rugged promontories and green, rolling hills that punctuate the jagged shoreline.

The surrounding waters bring Nova Scotia relatively mild winters, a long autumn season, cool summers, and frequent fog, which however often dissipates quite quickly (in less than 12 hours). Temperatures range from 20º C to 25º C in summer and from 10º C to 20º C in fall.

Nova Scotia is Canada's stormiest region. The storms can blow over quickly or rage for days, bringing winds of over 150 km/hr and whipping up surges that rise more than a metre above high tide. (Ahh, the Canadian version of Texas. As we say here, if you don't like the weather, wait a minute. :p )

Really? That's interesting. It always amazes me how people get from somewhere like Canada to Australia, which is so far away. People around here tend to just kind of stay here. :p

If I wasn't a Southerner, I think I'd definitely want to be Acadian. :D It's so gorgeous up there. *insanely jealous*

It was interesting, I found out a lot about some unique aspects of Canadian culture. She was here on exchange, and has gone back to Canada. I haven't seen her in nearly 9 months now, it's a bit hard, we can't decide what to do about "us". :(

I'm sure there are gorgeous places in Texas too! :)

A question Marls,.... once you've attached a pic to a post, can you go back later and edit and "unattach" the pic? I posted a few pics of me earlier in this thread, but I don't think I want to leave them up there permanently! :o

If my family had any money, I'd be an exchange student. But alas, we don't. :o :p

Oooh, "us." I'm glad I haven't been part of an "us" yet. Sounds a bit stressful to me.

Oh yes, there are plenty of gorgeous places in Texas, just not where I live. :p My area of the state is known as the Brush Country. We've just got lots of scrubby brown grass and weeds, trash trees like Mesquites, and lots of Prickly Pear Cactcus. It's flat here, and very dusty because it doesn't rain much. Brutally hot too; I've just come home from the football game (we lost, 21-22   ) and it was still around 85 degrees or so.

Having run down my town, though, I love it dearly. It's home. There's no where else I would've chosen to grow up.

Yeah, I think it costs quite a bit... I've never been on exchange myself.

In a sense I get your drift.... I could complain uphill and downhill about certain aspects of Malaysia all day.... but I swear noone can cook like they do over there. I miss the food so much! Haven't seen my family since early 96, too.

LOL... 1471 or 1472 I think... that region. There's a massively dorky pic of me when I was little (mom's fav pic of me  that she mailed to me recently), and a pic of me with the lightbulb look.

Wow, six years. :o I would really miss my parents and my sister if I didn't get to see them for six years. Then again, there are some relatives I wouldn't mind not seeing again for as long as I live. :p

Well, it's like this. I can complain about Texas as much as I want, because it's mine. However, if anyone else tries to do the same--particularly some Yankee rat bastard! :fiery: --I will, of course, be forced to kick their ass. And trust me, no one kicks ass like a Texan kicks ass. ;) :p

LOL! :D Hahahaha! I wouldn't mind seeing my family sometime soon. But yes, some relatives I don't particularly miss.... like my snobby "money is worth more than intelligence" uncles and aunts on my mom's side.

Yeah... coming from somewhere gives you a unique entitlement to whinge about it!

The relatives that really annoy me are the ones who are the stereotypical version of Texans. You know, beer guzzling, cussing, racist homophobes. So stupid. They're all older like uncles and great uncles and stuff though, so......maybe they won't live much longer and I won't be forced to be nice to them. :o They just piss me off because the perpetuate all the negative stereotypes of the South.
