"Hollywood" tears up script at U.S. Open
By Ossian Shine

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The man nicknamed "Hollywood" :o tore up the script on Thursday when Jan-Michael Gambill buried ninth seed Carlos Moya 6-3 6-3 6-1 to storm into the third round of the U.S. Open in front of a thrilled New York night crowd.

The American, who has struggled with injury for the best part of a year, had never beaten Moya in three previous occasions and had failed to pass the second round of a grand slam since the start of 2001.

In his last seven majors, Gambill has lost in the first round on five occasions, but against the in-form Spaniard he moved and fought like the top 20 player he was last year.

"If I can keep playing like this I am going to do well here," he said after wrapping up a 94-minute victory. "The crowd were great, the atmosphere was electric."

Former world number one Jim Courier, now a television commentator and pundit, coined Gambill's nickname because of the young man's good looks and sideline in modelling.
(Typical Jimbo  )

But on Thursday the 25-year-old showed there is also plenty beneath the surface.

Moya came to the U.S. Open on a roll. The former world number one lifted the title in his last tournament in Cincinnati, where he beat world number one and reigning Flushing Meadows champion Lleyton Hewitt in the final.

But Gambill ripped into him from the start, firing his idiosyncratic two-fisted forehand into the corners and serving with power and accuracy.

He raced through the first set in 26 minutes and never looked back on a floodlit Arthur Ashe stadium court.

The win puts no pressure on Gambill, though. Far from it.

"I tell you what. I don't feel any pressure at all," he grinned. "You come out here and play a match like this and the confidence goes through the roof.

"It has been frustrating being injured and watching your ranking go down and not being able to do anything," the 57th-ranked player said.

"But I stayed fiery out there today and I played my best tennis. I am a pretty fiery guy. Maybe it is because I am a Gemini...a June birthday and all that." ROTFL  :p

US Open Notes & Quotes
Friday, August 30, 2002

Courtesy of USA Network, from the television broadcast on Thursday, Aug. 29

Here are some comments from former tennis great and USA Network TV commentator Jim Courier and No. 6 seed Kim Clijsters on top-seed and world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt:

COURIER ON LLEYTON HEWITT

Jim Courier: He's got a lot on his shoulders right now, and I think for Lleyton Hewitt, his main focus is on the court. The only thing that matters to him in his life is between the lines, and that's why he's No. 1 right now. That's why you hear Pete Sampras talking about that's not my focus anymore, because I have a life. Well, Lleyton Hewitt doesn't. His life is between the lines. (Pffff at pathetic Jimbo    )

Lleyton is very personable, Lleyton is very friendly. What Lleyton doesn't understand, and I didn't understand when I was 21, and I was ranked at the top, as well, is your responsibilities extend outside those lines. When you're No. 1, you're the ambassador for the game of tennis. And it's your responsibility to make sure people know tennis is out there, and you have to do extra things.

Don't get me wrong; the guy's got incredible demands on his time. I'm not going to take a shot at him and say he should do everything that people ask him to do because people are unreasonable, and he does have the main task at hand. But he's got to try a little harder, and I'll bet when he's my age, he's going to sit and look back and say, 'Maybe I could have done things a little differently and made things better for everybody else,' including himself.

Today I saw him upstairs, and I said 'Hey, Lleyton, it's raining. Do you want to come and talk with us, address America a little bit?' He's like 'I don't want to do it; I'm playing a match.' He said 'Would you do it?' I said, 'Y'know, actually I probably wouldn't.' At that age, I probably wouldn't have.

He's going to show that warmer side that he has. It's just going to take him awhile, and it doesn't help when people are taking shots at him. It doesn't help when the ATP fines him half of his prize money. I'm not saying that he didn't warrant it, but there's some kind of educational situation that has to happen here. Someone in his camp needs to soft pedal it and say there are some things that might help you, and, by the way, it might help everybody else.

KIM CLIJSTERS DISCUSSES HER BOYFRIEND LLEYTON HEWITT
With Michael Barkann

KC: A lot of people see him differently. He's so motivated. He loves to compete. A lot of people see him aggressive on the court. I like that about him. He's a completely different person on the court than off. Actually, he's really shy and very calm. He's completely different.

I think he should ask them to stay away. I feel like Lleyton is shielded from the press and the public in general by them. Its really not good for him. He's a good kid and if they step away, I think he'll be more accessible. I somehow get the feeling they influence him the wrong way.

But that's just what I think. :p

Plus I think they should give Lley and Kimmy some privacy. They're always there at their throats. Lleyton is 21 now. How long are they planning to follow him around the world?

And they should do something with their own lives. Don't they feel like being active? I'd go nuts not doing anything.

I agree Dolly, It was implied that by Glynn and Chez following Lleyton they are living out THEIR dream THROUGH Lleyton.

KaseyL

I have some mixed feelings, Cilla.

The Walloon commentators were touching that subject too, as a matter of fact.

I think Lleyton says that he needs his entourage (so his parents too) to be with him, he needs it to stay motivated, to be able to play well.

On the other hand, I think that there can be 'too much' too. It's a thin line. I don't think it's always that good for the parents either btw.

However, I am sure that his parents are in no way 'parents from hell' like so many tennis players seem to have.

I prefer the approach of Kim's parents. But then, Kim has another personality, is also more used to be away from home without her parents for a long time.

C'mon_Lley
08-30-2002, 08:27 PM
Yup, Cilla. You're right. A while ago, Pat Cash was promoting his book in Australia and he said that, Look at Lleyton's parents, they've dropped everything and they're following him around the world. They're living his life not theirs.

There was this tennis doco about the WTA Tour not long ago and there was like this little 13yr old and her dad was pushing her and pushing her in training and having a go @ her when she did something wrong and she was not enjoying it you could just tell. And then they asked her do you enjoy tennis? ands she was like "Well Dad pushes me hard and sometimes you hate it but it's coz he wants me to be the best and he wants lots of fast cars, but he only wants what's best for me" The dad then proceeded to cringe as his selfishness was exposed:o This is the kind of exploitaion of young children by trhe parents in any sport that I can't stand.

I especially feel sorry for all those players who get into the tour because their families see the big $ machine already coming to them, rather than think of what's best for the player first of all.

Mississippi in the middle of a dry spell
Jimmy Rogers on the Victrola up high
Mama's dancin' with baby on her shoulder
The sun is settin' like molasses in the sky
The boy could sing, knew how to move, everything
Always wanting more, he'd leave you longing for

Black velvet and that little boy's smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring ya to your knees
Black velvet if you please

Up in Memphis the music's like a heatwave
White lightening, bound to drive you wild
Mama's baby's in the heart of every school girl
"Love me tender" leaves 'em cryin' in the aisle
The way he moved, it was a sin, so sweet and true
Always wanting more, he'd leave you longing for

Black velvet and that little boy's smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring ya to your knees
Black velvet if you please

Every word of every song that he sang was for you
In a flash he was gone, it happened so soon, what could you do?

Black velvet and that little boy's smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring ya to your knees
Black velvet if you please

Black velvet and that little boy's smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring ya to your knees
Black velvet if you please

If you please, if you please, if you please

Julie, he does need them, he says. So that's okay.

I just wonder where they draw the line. All in the best of intentions, but sometimes I can't help wondering... especially because there is another child, younger too, dunno...

Then, it's so nice of Lleyton's parents to be at Kim's matches as much as possible too. Like yesterday, I saw Cherilyn cheering for Kim. :hearts: They really seem to love her too.

There are it seems some parts even the toughest exercise regime cannot reach, a point accentuated by those pictures of her hotpants at this week's US Open. Will such gear ever be allowed at Wimbledon? Unlikely, though the sponsorship of spearmint rhino (Cheap, skanky strip club) could be enormous. Almost as big as.....

Out across the endless sea

But I'll be a bag of bones
Driving down the road along

My heart is drenched in wine
But you'll be on my mind
Forever

Something has to make you run

I never knew that a kid like me
Could take his mic around the world and flash the big S.D.
And rock the masses, from Madrid to Calabassas
Tijuana, Mexico, bootleg demos in Tokyo
They know me though, Ďcause I be puttiní in work
Commit my life to rebirth, well respected, Ďcause thatís my word
Iím sure you heard, about a new sound going around
She might have left my hood, but she was born in my town

We rep. the South, so what you talking about
Iím not running off my mouth, I know this without a doubt
ĎCause if you know these streets, then these streets know you
When itís time to handle business, then you know what to do
Me and my crew, we stay true, old skool or new
Many were called, but the chosen are few
We rise to the top, what you want? Just in case you forgot
Rush the stage, grab my mic, show me what you got

b-section:
You didnít know, thought we was new on the scene
Well, itís alright! Itís alright!
I know you know, I see you smiling at me
Well, itís alright! Itís alright!

chorus:
Boom! Here comes the Boom!
Ready or not, here comes the boys from the South
Boom! Here comes the Boom!
How you like me now?

Is that all you got?
Iíll take your best shot.

Hi, guys!
I know you've heard this already, but as a New Yorker, let me assure you--NO ONE takes the NY Post seriously. It's a laughingstock at best.
But even so, if this guy thought Kim came off as a jerk, I say good for her. She played a great match and all he could ask her about was Lleyton. Not even his playing, but his relationship with the media. She had every right to be annoyed and every right to blow him off. Maybe it'll teach him not to be such a moron in the future. In the article, he said "when asked about", failing to mention that it was ALL she was asked about. Typical media screwing with the story.

Lleyton is up second on Ashe tomorrow :fiery: :fiery: I cannot believe they aren't getting a night match :fiery: :fiery: And Kim is playing first on Grandstand so by the time she's done with her match and all her press stuff she probably won't have time to go watch Lleyton :fiery:

Scotso
08-31-2002, 12:44 AM
I told you he is

Angele

Ana, I'm getting it on RDS, the french version of TSN :o

Murkofan
08-31-2002, 12:46 AM
Oh look, the Gorilla's shirt isn't completely white. :o :p

I dunno, QG, I wouldn't bet on Kim not showing up for Lleyton's match. If she comes out and takes care of business, she should be done pretty quick. ;) And then if she has a press conference like she did after her first round match, I don't expect it'll last very long. :o :p

Scotso
08-31-2002, 12:47 AM
They don't want to give Lleyton a night match.

Static

Angie, lucky you... o well I guess no tennis for me... stupid Football... why can't they go on strike, I mean CFL? Who watches it anyways :o

Murkofan
