I saw a replay of an 80s Conners/MacEnroe match from the US Open, and it was sooooo gay. :o They like weren't even hitting the ball hard or anything. It looked that way, anyways. And ew, the hair and the clothes! :p

And they both behaved way worse than Lleyton does.

Go on over there
turn on the light

Come over here
stand on this chair
that's right
Raise your arms up to the air
now shake 'em

You give me a reason to live
You give me a reason to live
You give me a reason to live
You give me a reason to live
Sweet darling

You can leave your hat on
You can leave your hat on

you can leave your hat on
you can leave your hat on
you can leave your hat on

Suspicious minds a talkin'
try'n' to tear us apart
they don't believe
in this love of mine
they don't know I love you
they don't know what love is
they don't know what love is
they don't know what love is

DUH for most of these...

No. 1 SERENA WILLIAMS (U.S.) VS. CORINA MORARIU (U.S.)
Serena practiced for an hour and a half with her older sister and defending US Open champion Venus on Sunday and showed few effects of the left knee injury that has plagued her the past month. That doesn't bode well for Morariu, who has only played a handful of matches since returning to the tour at the end of July after battling cancer.

Without question, fans will be vocal in their support of Morariu, who is still taking anticancer drugs daily and whose return to professional play has made her an American heroine. If this match was played two years ago, when Morariu was flashing top-20 stuff with her eclectic shot making, you might give Corina a veteran's chance at an upset. But 1999 U.S. Open champ Serena has been the tour's most formidable player for the past six months and has way too much firepower for the still recovering Morariu. Serena in straight sets in what should be a highly emotional, inspiring contest on Ashe Stadium.

No. 6 ANDRE AGASSI (U.S.) VS. ROBBY GINEPRI (U.S.)
This could be the 32-year-old Agassi's last serious chance to win the
Open again, so you can bet this 1999 champ will go all out in an attempt to win his third title. Agassi looked terrific in winning L.A in early August and then was pounded by Lleyton Hewitt in Cincy and James Blake in Washington. You can look at the legendary body puncher's results at this summer in two years: that he is priming for the Open, or that he has lost half a step. In his two prior Slam appearances this year, Agassi was outrun by Juan Carlos Ferrero in Paris and out stroked by Paradorn Srichphan at Wimbledon. It is possible (although not probable) that Andre's not up playing seven three-out-of-five set matches any more.

With that said, Agassi should have few problems with Ginepri, who he devastated in Los Angeles. Ginepri simply doesn't have the weapons to
Keep up with Andre and only freak injury will keep the Las Vegan from crushing Ginepri in straight sets.

No. 25 JAMES BLAKE (U.S.) VS. BRIAN VAHALY (U.S)
This contest between two young Americans is perhaps the most interesting contest of the day, with the red hot Blake facing off against the rapidly rising Vahaly, an ambitious all-courter who won the Aptos Challenger in July.

Blake's game completely flourished a week ago in Washington, when his huge inside out forehand and tremendous court coverage led him to the title.
Without a doubt, Blake is now a contender for the U.S. Open crown, a contention that would have been considered wild in 2001, when he nearly upset eventual champion Lleyton Hewitt (whom he may see again in the third round this year).

It will be interesting to see how Blake response to the pressure of being seeded at the Open, a locale just 10 miles away from where he learned to play tennis. If he can deal with the heat, then he should be able to penetrate Vahaly, who has decent firepower, but will be overwhelmed by the bright lights of Ashe Stadium.

No. 24 IVA MAJOLI (CRO) VS. ASHLEY HARKLEROAD (U.S.)
Former Roland Garros champ Majoli has quietly snuck back into the top
25, an unusual accomplishment for a shrieking grunter with blazing groundies who loves the spotlight. The Croatian will have her hands full with Harkleroad, who has improved immensely since making tabloid headlines last year as a junior pin-up girl. Harkleroad is a dogged competitor with solid groundies who has mentally matured under new coach Jose Luis Clerc. She has a terrific return, is an intense retriever and won't be intimidated by Majoli's occasional hot streaks. Harkleroad in a three-set upset.

No. 20 YOUNES EL AYNAOUI (MOR) vs. JEFF MORRISON (U.S)
U.S. fans would like to think that every up-and-coming America male is prepared to pull an upset in N.Y., and why not Morrison, who was so brilliant at Wimbledon. This genteel West Virginian has an intimidating serve-and-volley game when he is on and is more than capable of unearthing El Aynaoui, a tricky veteran with tremendous variety who is capable of taking down any player when he is on. But El Aynaoui has never been a great Grand Slam player and has been known to take a walk-about when the going gets tough. He's a much more accomplished player than Morrison, but who's to say that he won't get distracted by what should be a large, loud crowd of Morrison supporters on Court 11? While picking an upset here is tempting, the Moroccan is too strong off the ground for Morrison and will win in five heart-wrenching sets.

LAURA GRANVILLE (U.S.) vs. KATERINA SREBOTNIK (SLO)
Of all the solid players to come out of the U,.S. collegiate ranks the past few years, two-time NCAA champ Granville is perhaps the most promising. A smart, no -nonsense player with a solid ground attack and a more than serviceable volley, Granville took the tour by storm by elbowing her way into the fourth round of Wimbledon. She's had a decent summer on the hard courts and if she keeps her head this week, could make some waves in New York. However, in Srebotnik, she faces a rangy Slovenian all-courter who is playing the best tennis of her life this year and has a fine chance of ending the year in the top-20. Srebotnik may not be the best mover of the planet, but can club winners off both wings and finish points off at the net. There will be little pressure on the Slovenian to win this contest, which will make it even more difficult for Granville, who is sure to have plenty of friends and family in attendance. Still, in her 15 months on tour, Granville has shown herself to be a mentally tough competitor who's up to a challenge.

Granville in three sets.

No. 6 MONICA SELES VS. ZSOFIA GUBACSI (HUN)
Seles' perennially bad feet forced her take off most of the summer season, which is bad news for a player who craves a lot of match play. This veteran former US Open champion is a tremendous hard court player, but the 28-year-old needs to be moving with vim and vigor to be able to trip up the top players. While it is doubtful that Seles will find her once ethereal form during the tournament, she has too much firepower for Gubacsi, a talented yet inexperienced Hungarian who is coached by Attila Door (who has never seen a knob he didn't want to mangle). Seles in two sets.

They don't use lights during the day, moron.

As long as Lleyton is one of them I don't mind. And yes, one Ashe has night matches, but sometimes they run really late on the other courts so you never know. But I have a feeling they'll do anything they can to show the annoying Americans and to NOT show my favorites, especially Lleyton.

Sports Illustrated senior writer Jon Wertheim peers into his crystal ball to reveal the fate of the top 16 men's and women's seeds for the U.S. Open. Scroll down to see the first-round matches you shouldn't miss, some darkhorse candidates to advance to Week 2, and his championship predictions.

WOMEN'S REPORT | Men's Report

1. Serena Williams: The knee is a minor cause for concern, but she considers herself the favorite -- and who are we to argue? Cushy draw doesn't hurt either, but the gut says that the tide will turn and Venus gets back on the board.

2. Venus Williams: The lone drama of the women's draw: Can she turn the tables on li'l sis? Might get a few good workouts -- Barbara Schett, Chanda Rubin, Jennifer Capriati -- along the way, but it will be shocking if there isn't another all-Williams finale.

3. Jennifer Capriati: Don't look now but the Capster hasn't won an event since Australia. If she isn't on her game, she's likely to lose to Amelie Mauresmo, for the third time in eight weeks, in the quarters.

4. Lindsay Davenport: Nice to have the 1998 champ back in the mix, but she still has too much ring rust (court rust?) to seriously threaten Williams Nation. Still, she's a fair bet to reach the semis.

5. Jelena Dokic: A Norm Peterson regular in the second week, but is she too deferential to the sisters?

6. Monica Seles: Sentimental fave deserves our admiration. But even without a bum foot, her best days have passed.

7. Kim Clijsters: If she's around past the quarters, it will be only as a Lleyton supporter. Another bad loss -- of which there have been puzzlingly many this year -- and it might be time for shoulder surgery. Eleni Daniilidou could give her fits in Round 3.

8. Justine Henin: Where is her confidence after a surprising loss to Anastasia Myskina in New Haven, City of Elms?

9. Martina Hingis: See: Davenport. Her return is welcome, but a freshly carved ankle deprives her of the mobility required to make a deep run.

10. Amelie Mauresmo: Has to be encouraged by her play in Montreal -- this on the heels of a Wimbledon semifinal appearance. Assuming her tête is intact, she might be the best bet to break up the Palm Beach Gardens dynasty.

11. Daniela Hantuchova: The tour's Flavor of the Summer has slipped a bit since Wimbledon. Her draw, however, should enable her to make nice run.

12. Elena Dementieva: Blonde, titleless Russian has been struggling badly of late. May live up her seeding, but she's a long way off from her semifinal form of 2000.

13. Silvia Farina Elia: All credit for being a top-15 player at age 30. But she's an upset waiting to happen.

14. Chanda Rubin: Though she cooled of after winning L.A., look for her to make some noise. Fairly cushy draw ensures she'll live up to her seeding.

15. Anastasia Myskina: Still wants for consistent results, but fun-to-watch Russian could inflict some damage, much as she did in New Haven.

16. Magdalena Maleeva: Hasn't been beyond Round 3 since 1994.

LOWER SEEDS WORTH WATCHING

17. Anna Smashnova: Game has dovetailed a bit, but we love the footspeed and grit. After tough first-rounder against Swiss Miss Marie-Gaianeh Mikaelian, she's in the clear for a few rounds.

18. Ai Sugiyama: Aye, aye. Former top-15 player has found her groove again.

23. Patty Schnyder: Talent is there, but is the heart?

28. Eleni Daniilidou: Big game and a nifty backhand. A player to watch.

29. Barbara Schett: Her glory days have passed, but she's still capable of some good tennis.

30. Meghann Shaughnessy: After cracking the top 10 last year, Arizonan's career is on the downswing. Still, she ought to win a few rounds and could give the right seed some trouble.

DARKHORSE NATION

Anna Kournikova: Seriously. If the Anna from the California swing shows up, the yuks will stop.

Laura Granville: Granny has a solid game and doesn't choke.

Barbara Rittner: Fed Cup heroine back on American soil.

Elena Bovina: Her big game could give Dokic a workout in Round 2.

FIRST-ROUND MATCHES TO WATCH

Corina Morariu vs. Serena Williams: Morariu won't win. But she already has.

Hingis vs. Marissa Irvin: If Hingis isn't on her game, feisty Californian could score an upset.

Rita Grande vs. Dinara Safina: Might Safina outlast her brother in the draw?

Hantuchova vs. Nicole Pratt: Feisty veteran will be a good challenge for teenage comer.

No. 24 Iva Majoli vs. Ashley Harkleroad: Just because.

PREDICTIONS

Semifinals: Serena Williams vs. Dokic; Mauresmo vs. Venus Williams
Final: Serena Williams vs. Venus Williams
Champion: Venus Williams

7. Kim Clijsters: If she's around past the quarters, it will be only as a Lleyton supporter. Another bad loss -- of which there have been puzzlingly many this year -- and it might be time for shoulder surgery. Eleni Daniilidou could give her fits in Round 3.

Corina Morariu Interview with USA Network
Monday, August 26, 2002

Following is an interview with Corina Morariu conducted by USA Network prior to today's match.

USA: Question on how she got herself back in shape:

CM: It was a really tough process. I got out of the hospital at the end of November and couldn't walk 20 yards. So, I started walking, then I got back on the court 10 minutes at a time every other day or as much as I could without getting completely exhausted, and worked my way from there. I decided in January this is what I wanted to do and started hitting in February. There were days when I hit 10 minutes and felt like I played a 3 ½ hour match.

USA: Question on how she learned about her cancer diagnosis:

CM: It happened really quickly. I started getting frequent nosebleeds and spontaneous bruises and the combination of the two prompted me to see a doctor. And within two days my health deteriorated dramatically to the point where I couldn't get out of bed to go to the bathroom and that's when I was diagnosed.

USA: Question on the support she received from her fellow WTA players:

CM: Words can't really describe the feelings, when you're laying in a hospital bed fighting for your life, what something like that means. And to see the girls and how they responded to me and my illness, that is a feeling I could never begin to tell you about because it was so overwhelming.

USA: Question on her comeback and playing Serena Williams:

CM: It's an amazing feeling. It's very emotional. Obviously, it's an extremely tough draw for me. It's going to be a great stage for me to come back on, to play the best player in the world. I want to enjoy the moment and the atmosphere and appreciate it.

Oh God! Has anyone read this about what Kim has said?! It's on The Sun's site!

The women's singles in New York is sure to be dominated by the Williams sisters again.

And No6 seed, Kim Clijsters, admits she has given up hope of beating them.

Venus is after her third successive crown while sister Serena, the world No1, has already won the French Open and Wimbledon this year.

Clijsters said: "Before, you'd feel that if you played well and stayed in there, you had a chance.

"But now, they have really improved. They are more consistent and more focused. They play the bigger points better and know how to raise their game in the later rounds."

Anyways   at the schedule for tomorrow! Hopefully they'll show Kim instead of Marat *crossing fingers* and I don't hold much hope for Lleyton since he plays opposite Monica  Anyways Kim should be at Lleyton's match... I doubt Lleyton will be at Kim's though since he needs to prepare for his own match!

I agree. I think Kim will definitely be at Lleyton's match. Lleyton plays 3rd match on Ashe stadium. I don't think he'll watch Kimmy tomorrow. Damn that schedule.
