He predicts Haas to take the title. The part on Lleyton is in the articles thread. As I can't post it on cclounge yet, here's what he has to say about Kim: 7. Kim Clijsters: If she's around past the quarters, it will be only as a Lleyton supporter. Another bad loss -- of which there have been puzzlingly many this year -- and it might be time for shoulder surgery. Eleni Daniilidou could give her fits in Round 3. Another all-Williams might well be possible. But pressuming that Kim won't be worth a thing, only watching Lleyton, and that Mauresmo simply would get through to the semis, pfff. KaseyL 08-22-2002, 09:31 PM Bye marly and Julie! Scotso 08-22-2002, 09:33 PM I dunno, I hope that my Corina will take out Serena... I know she most likely won't. It just turned Friday 26 minutes ago :p Peridotpixie 08-22-2002, 11:16 PM Hi guys! I just returned from Flushing and I will now proceed to give you a full report. I sat in the front row of Louis Armstrong Court all day and watched the practice sessions, which were, for the most part, an hour each. I'm actually going to start with the last one I watched, at 4, which was Andy Roddick, who I know you all just LOVE. He was hitting with a guy who I thought looked really familiar, but I couldn't figure out who he was until about ten minutes later when I realized...it was our buddy double bagel Robby! He was playing much better, so I think he must have been intimidated by LL on that fateful day. They warmed up (volleys, lobs, etc.) and then played a match. I know you guys won't want to hear this, but Andy was looking VERY good. I think he has a real chance to win this year, or at leadt to get very far. His serve is just awesome. There's really no other word for it. Watching it in person...wow. His one weakness, though, continues to be that he gets VERY frustrated VERY easily. In the hour and a half he was on the court he threw his racket no fewer than fifteen times, once into the back wall of the court. He also smacked several balls off the court (one right over the scoreboard out of the stadium!) and removed an empty water bottle from the court by whacking it hard. He yelled very loudly a couple of times, puzzling pretty much the entire crowd, becvause we couldn't figure out why he was so upset. He was playing well! He also cursed under his breath quite a bit. Robby was more under control, but he yelled and threw his racket a bit, too. Geez, guys! It was only practice! Anyway, Andy won very easily, although Robby made a few great shots, which Andy either cursed at, shook his head at, or yelled, "Great shot!" to. He also talked to his coach quite a bit, and chatted with Jim Courier, who was hanging out on the court. The bottom line is, if Andy can keep his cool, he'll do very well. However, since he seems to have quite a bit of trouble doing that...well, who knows. By the way, Robby's coach is very cool. Funny guy. After the match, Jim, Andy, and Robby all signed autographs. I have to give Andy credit--he signed a LOT of autographs, and was very nice and patient about it. Robby was somewhat less in-demand--in fact, Jim kept asking people getting his autograph, "Want Robby's now?" I think I was probably one of the only people there who recognized him, and I wasn't sure I was right until I heard his coach call him. fcap 08-22-2002, 11:18 PM Not for me Cillla!!! Err but im onlu having a 2 star day today!!!:rolleys: Goonergal 08-22-2002, 11:20 PM Thanx 4 The report! :) Man I wish Iwas in Flushing...I not jealous....*lie lie lie lie* :p Jim was HANGING around was he :o What a shock! :p Nice to see The Bagel boy Robby has recovered well. What matches are ya gonna see next week?? If you're going. Goonergal 08-22-2002, 11:22 PM Peridotpixie-Did ya see anyone else there? So Kets do ya have to go to school soon? C'mon_Lley 08-22-2002, 11:23 PM LOL! at Jim. Whenever he is calling a match (if you call that calling a match)) he's always like, I was just hanging out with so and so and he'll throw a few players' names. And the other guy just likes to kiss Jimbo's ass. I'm gonna have to mute his commentary.  fcap 08-22-2002, 11:25 PM Um school starts in an hour.... 8:30 and it takes 15 minutes In good traffic .... So yeh i have to leave arround 8:10 or 8:15 !! But the eralt start is kinda good coz we finish at 2:45!! :):) ERRR But i have shitty subjects today!! Peridotpixie 08-22-2002, 11:25 PM Moving right along...I think I'll start back at the beginning. I got to the tennis center at about 10:30 and went straight to Louis Armstrong where two guys were practicing. I THINK that one was Hyung-Taik Lee, but I could be completely wrong. The other was the guy with the funny REALLY blonde hair in a ponytail...someone wanna help me out here? At 11 Henman (another favorite!) and Todd Martin came out and practiced. They didn't play a match, but instead used another guy to do a two on one type thing. They joked a lot about Tim's doubles. Tim has a nice accent, btw. Todd was extremely gracious to all his fans, signing autographs and chatting. I'm actually leaving for orientation at college on Monday, so I sadly can't see any matches next week. Sigh. C'mon_Lley 08-22-2002, 11:27 PM About the parents, I read Pat Cash had said during the promotion for his book in Australia recently that Glyn and Cherylin are living Lleyton's life not theirs. They've dropped everything and they follow him around everywhere.  But he always says what's on his mind. So I'm not that suprised. Goonergal 08-22-2002, 11:27 PM Pffff @ Jim! LOL I can only imagine......actually I can't :o :p What subs have ya got today then Kets? don't tell me you have calc! :p Luv this piccie of LL! ;) fcap 08-22-2002, 11:30 PM Err Cilla yeh calc And last on a fuking friday!! Someone near me insisted that it was Thomas Johansen, but it wasn't. At all. However, when the guy shouted, "Thomas!" the player looked up and nodded. After a quick search when I got home, I established that he was Thomas Enqvist. Agassi played for two hours. Two. I like Andre, I really do, and watching him play was exciting, but by 1 o clock I was very hot, very uncomfortable, and very ready to not watch him anymore. However, I didn't want to lose my seat, so I stayed put. At about quarter to two (by which time I was drenched in sweat and turning pink) people started rushing the player's entrance. Two girls sitting behind me who had been gaping at Andre turned their attention that way to see who it was. A minute later one announced, "It's a girl." I looked over, but couldn't see anything. A minute later though, the mystery swarmed player stepped into view...it was Kim! And, bless her, she was signing every last thing behing shoved in her face. Goonergal 08-22-2002, 11:32 PM  @ Tim. Nice Aceent :o Well I guess ya don't have to hear it nearly every wekk like moi...sooo :p Blonde Ponytail  i can't think off the top of my head, I only know brown haired ponytailed guyz. Hmmmmm I'll have a think. Shame ya can't go to the open ya could have been our official spokesperson! Pat Cash  he gets on me nerves but i think what he says in probably true. Goonergal 08-22-2002, 11:35 PM Ya saw Kim! :bounce: Wow weeee :D Gee I bet she signed everything too  Yeah itsn't it funny that you saw all the players that we all adore :p I used to doss in textiles too Kets :p But Calc last Yep I had that too once  C'mon_Lley 08-22-2002, 11:36 PM Thanks for the report Peridotpixie!:) Did you catch a glimpse of Lley? However, the crowd was American, and most had come in to watch Andre and they were now stampeding in a desperate attempt to get his autograph, resulting in a chant of, "Andre! Andre! Andre!" which Kim smiled at and then ignored. Kim was hitting with--I think--Ai Sugiyama. Andre signed about a million autographs, and then the chant broke out again, this time from the players on the other side of the court, which Andre dashed across. This time Kim looked more annoyed then amused, since she was trying to hit and, well, wasn't doing a great job. (She had just hit a couple into the net.) Finally, Andre left, and with him most of the crowd. It was like an exodus. People just streamed out, pretty much emptying out the court. I, of course, was thrilled to bits and stayed firmly put. No kidding! :D :D They did have a room but they couldn't wait till they got there.;) ;) Peridotpixie 08-22-2002, 11:54 PM At first I glanced around to see if Lleyton was lurking, but I quickly established that in order to watch Kim he'd have to be either in the stands or on the court. If he were ANYWHERE in the stands he would have been moved instantly. The court had cleared out, but there were still at least thirty people, enough to mob a person, and if Lleyton had been there more would have come streaming in. Since we all know how well Lleyton deals with being mobbed, I figured he wouldn't take that chance. As for being on the court...well, it's uncomfortable for the player standing there and probably distracting to the players (unless, of course, you're Jim Courier). So I figured he wouldn't show, and he didn't. Goonergal 08-22-2002, 11:58 PM well, it's uncomfortable for the player standing there and probably distracting to the players (unless, of course, you're Jim Courier). LMAO! :p Yeah I think that LL would stay away coz it wouldn't really be fair on Kim. Erm yes Dolly they couldn't *cough* wait that extra 2 mins to their room :p ;) Errrrr LL seems to be enjoying smelin this towel too much :o It's either Wimby Fresh or it has Kim's Perfume on it! :o Scotso 08-22-2002, 11:58 PM it's raining men... hallelujah, it's raining men... amen! Goonergal 08-23-2002, 12:00 AM God Bless Mother Nature...She's a single woman too.....:p Peridotpixie 08-23-2002, 12:01 AM At one point Ai wandered over to her chair and Kim came over in my direction to pick up a ball. I called out, "How's your arm, Kim?" and she smiled and said, "Better." She has a very pleasant voice, actually. Anyway, everyone sitting near me turned to me in awe--I don't think they really knew much about Kim. Soon I was being bombarded with questions--what was her rank, why'd I ask about her arm, who's that she's hitting with...etc. The guy sitting across the aisle from me almost made me rip all my hair out. He asked for her rank, he asked who she was hitting with, and if she had a rank. Then he said, "So you're a fan?" I said, "Oh, yes, I'm a big Kim Clijsters fan." He nodded and said, "She's not a little girl. I expected her to be." I gave him an odd look, but he kept talking. "I mean, she's very muscular. Do you know if she lifts weights?" I gave him a "duh" look and said, politely, "I expect they all do." Then, for the sake of being nice, I added, "Justine Henin is pretty small. Very petite." "Who?" he asked. "Justine Henin." I said. "Oh, right," he said, nodding, obviously having no clue what I was talking about. I looked away, but he kept talking. "I guess they're all pretty big, muscular, but I didn't expect Kim Cleesters to be." I closed my eyes in pain. Finally, I made a last ditch effort. "She's Lleyton Hewitt's girlfriend, you know," I said, not looking at him. "Oh, really?" he asked, "He's pretty highly ranked, isn't he?" At that point I had had it. "Number one," I said frostily, still watching the court. "I guess that's pretty high!" said the guy. I didn't dignify it with a response. C'mon_Lley 08-23-2002, 12:01 AM So has Lley's draw been reworked yet? Goonergal 08-23-2002, 12:06 AM Oh Lord! The lack of basic knowledge of some ppl  Kim who?? Is she seeded?? She's Lleyton Hewitt's girlfriend?? Oh Her (This is the type of convo I have with my Dad  ) He is as clueless as that man. Though he seems so clueless as if he's taking the piss.No.1 That's pretty high? WTF :o Goonergal 08-23-2002, 12:09 AM This is LL's draw Now Lleyton Hewitt AUS (1) vs. Nicolas Coutelot FRA Qualifier vs. Qualifier Nikolay Davydenko RUS vs. Qualifier Brian Vahaly USA vs. James Blake USA (25) Marcelo Rios CHI (22) vs. Jonas Bjorkman SWE Qualifier vs. Qualifier Luis Horna PER vs. Qualifier Richard Krajicek NED vs. Jiri Novak CZE (14) Jarkko Nieminen FIN (34) vs. Fernando Vicente ESP Hyung-Taik Lee KOR vs. Mardy Fish USA Olivier Rochus BEL vs. Hicham Arazi MAR Jeff Morrison USA vs. Younes El Aynaoui MAR (20) Tommy Robredo ESP (31) vs. Mariano Zabaleta ARG Agustin Calleri ARG vs. Fernando Meligeni BRA Jan Vacek CZE vs. Wayne Ferreira RSA Magnus Norman SWE vs. Albert Costa ESP (8) Btw :wavey: V! Long time no see! Peridotpixie 08-23-2002, 12:09 AM Kim and Ai (I think) did the basic practice stuff for awhile and then started playing games. The good news is that Kim was hitting the ball very hard. The bad news is that she was very frequently hitting it very hard off the court. She hit the ball out a LOT. And when it was out, it wasn't just over the line, it was waaay out. Again in good news, she was moving well and getting to pretty much everything. Unfortunately, she just wasn't doing anything with the balls she was getting to, sending them long or into the net. She kept rubbing her knee, and at one point her trainer gave her a bandage like thing, which she wore just under her kneecap for the rest of the practice. It was hard to keep track of the score, since they were keeping it in their heads and not letting the crowd know whether they were calling balls that were close in or out. However, it seemed to me like Ai made a couple of sketchy calls to her own advantage. Obviously, I could be wrong. Just saying. C'mon_Lley 08-23-2002, 12:13 AM Thanks for posting the draw Cilla! Looks much better now. :D Gotta go... Cya :wavey: Goonergal 08-23-2002, 12:15 AM Pfffff I would not be suprised at Ai. But this has been Kim's problem, she goes for the lines and if she gets a winner, great but if she misses it's by miles. An example of this was the 2nd set Vs Pratt last week it was awful by Kim's standards. i hope the knee is nothing serious. Goonergal 08-23-2002, 12:16 AM :wavey: Dolly! Peridotpixie 08-23-2002, 12:17 AM As I said, it was difficult to keep track of the score, but Ai broke Kim at one point, and although Kim came very close to breaking back, she didn't quite get there. A man, who I guess was her new coach, followed her around and supplied her with balls (it seems like the coaches main jobs were to be the ballboys) and occasionally Kim said something to him in Flemish. Kim was very visibly frustrated with the way she was playing, punching balls away and throwing her racket. At one point she threw her racket on the ground, picked it back up, and threw it back on the ground. She also sent a ball high into the stadium a la Andy. I felt for her--it just seemed like she was having one of those days. At least, I hope that's all it was. There were a few funny moments went Kim got to impossible balls and lobbed them back at least four times in a row. When it finally landed out, Ai hit it back playfully and Kim kicked her leg up to try to kick it with a big grin on her face. She got a nice round of applause for her efforts on that point. Another time, Kim was running all over the court, finally running up to the net to get back a short ball. Ai, of course, passed behind her, and Kim let out a little squeal, causing everyone to burst into laughter. It was odd, because she was definitely fluctuating between having fun and being unbelievably frustrated with herself. Scotso 08-23-2002, 12:21 AM Kimmy is so silly :D Goonergal 08-23-2002, 12:21 AM :( It sounds worrying. Scotso 08-23-2002, 12:27 AM Don't think about it then! Silly. Goonergal 08-23-2002, 12:29 AM Ok then....silly! She sounds like LL thowing her racket etc :p Angele 08-23-2002, 12:39 AM Hey all :wavey: Thanks for the reports  But :( for Kim! I don't know what's wrong with her  I hope the knee is nothing serious! And I hope she gets back on track before the Open starts! :bounce: at Lleyton's draw being changed :D Peridotpixie 08-23-2002, 12:40 AM Partway through the games, Kim started playing with her racket strings between points, like someone else we know. At 3:02, Xavier Malisse stepped ouit onto the court and dropped his bag next to the net with a Godlike air, as if to say, "I have arrived." With him was Magnus Norman, two coaches, and a few other people. Kim and Ai finished their point, then ran to the net and shook hands. The crowd gave them a round of applause, which was nice, because they only did that for Andre. Kim ran over to one of the guys who had accompanied Xavier and did the European kiss kiss thing, kissing him on the cheek three times. He was pretty short, wore glasses, carried a racket but never played, and wore a tennis T-Shirt. She chatted with him for a moment, then went over to the group of people waiting for autographs and started signing away. Ai, by contrast, spoke quickly to Kim, sat down and drank from her bottle, spoke to her coach, and left the court at 7 after 3, signing exactly one autograph on her way out. Her coach smiled apologetically to everyone else holding things out. When Kim was done signing she went to the side of the court where her trainer had laid out a red towel. She sat down and the trainer started working on her legs. After about ten minutes Kim began to stretch on her own. She did so for another five minutes or so, all the while watching XaXa and Magnus. It was cute, her head was going back and forth as she followed the ball. Then she got up and signed yet more autographs, because more people had gathered while she was stretching. When she was done she gathered her things and sprinted across the court in between points in a sort of deer in the headlights way (with a big smile) and stold by her bag (which was next to the net), facing the court, watching the game in progress. The short glasses guy came over and they started chatting again. Meanwhile, her coach and trainer were still on the other side of the court. Finally, they walked around the back of the court to Kim and the three of them turned and headed out the player's exit, Kim stopping to sign three more autographs on the way (including one for me!) for those (three) of us waiting on the other side of the court. Goonergal 08-23-2002, 12:43 AM Partway through the games, Kim started playing with her racket strings between points, like someone else we know. :D Kimmy is such a sweetie  Thanx again Peridotpixie for making the effort to write these reports it is much appreciated :) Peridotpixie 08-23-2002, 12:46 AM Just another quick observation: at one point Xavier hit a ball into the crowd, and it bounced off a railing and then hit someone. The coach and glasses dude ran over to make sure she was okay, but XaXa didn't even glance in her direction. Pretty cold. And on a random note, the coaches kept asking people to return the balls that ended up in the crowd. Andre got booed for requesting that a woman in the upper decks throw back a ball. So, bottom line: Kim's play, sloppy as it was, was still better than lesser players' regular play, so she should be able to get through the first two rounds playing like that. She'll probably even take out Danilidou in the third round. But, in my opinion, she just can't beat Mauresmo playing like that. She'll have to bring it up a notch--or several--to even have a chance. On the bright side, Kim seems to play much better against top ten players than other people! She did take out Davenport at Stanford and gave Venus a hell of a fight in San Diego. So if she can get through the first few rounds, she might be able to step it out and take out the bigger players. Hopefully, she was just having an off day, and will be in better form by Monday. She has a few days to step it up. Scotso 08-23-2002, 12:46 AM Hey Angele  C'mon_Lley 08-23-2002, 12:48 AM Just dropping in to post a new article about Lleyton by By Curry Kirkpatrick from ESPN site. Its really long so, I'll post a link here. http://espn.go.com/magazine/vol5no18hewitt.html Goonergal 08-23-2002, 12:50 AM I hope so! :) Stuff from Werthless 25. James Blake:May well play Hewitt in Round 3. (Watch out for those foot faults.) What a Bitch  BUT 17. Pete Sampras: Your eyes aren't deceiving you: The greatest ever is seeded lower than someone named Nalbandian. But as he puts it, "You have to remember who I am and where I'm playing. ... The U.S. Open is where you shine and that is where I hope to shine." Uh, OK. ROTFLMAO! BG Sounds soooooo pathetic :o  1. Lleyton Hewitt: Ordinarily, one would think his bush-league feud with the ATP would detract from his focus, but this is a player who uses discord as fuel. Even so, he has a brutal draw that likely has him facing James Blake in Round 3, Richard Krajicek in Round 4 and Andre Agassi in the semis. August 22, 2002 Can Roddick strike back? By Curry Kirkpatrick ESPN The Magazine Tennis gets more and more confusing. While we all try to figure out which Williams sister's turn it is to win the U.S. Open, as well as which one is hooked up with LaVar Arrington, men play tennis, too. Don't they? In fact, wasn't it Andy Roddick of America -- not Lleyton Hewitt of Australia -- who was supposed to be rocketing to Number One, accumulating major titles and becoming tennis' It Kid along about right now? Well, yeah, but when you're spending a bunch of your down time meeting George Bush (the old one), going live with Regis and Kelly, posing with Daisy Fuentes and otherwise perpetuating your Teen Idol Goes Madison Ave. image, who's got the time to worry about winning this upcoming thing at Flushing Meadow -- not to mention beating a bunch of guys named Fernando? Actually, Fernando Gonzales (ranked 39) and Fernando Meligeni (ranked 61 and no relation to Maleguena) are just the most recent vaguely familiar characters to have upset Roddick in his teeter-totter sophomore season in the big leagues. Not that A-Rod -- who really should bow in the general direction of Texas anytime anybody has the gall to saddle him with that nickname -- hasn't been building some impressive credentials on top of his roistering rookie campaign when he won 42 matches and was the first domestic teen to win three tournaments since Pete Sampras won four in 1990. Wasn't Roddick supposed to be No. 1? Roddick is 48-16 coming into the Open -- the most match victories on the tour this year. He's even won two more tournaments, whipping Davis Cup pal James Blake to take Memphis and out-serving Sampras to win Houston. But on the grand occasions ... Andy has been simply raggedy. Down and Out (and Quickly) in the second, first and third rounds of the majors, the Australian and French Opens and Wimbledon, respectively. Even at the "March major" -- the huge hardcourt event at Miami -- Roddick lost in the second round to the immortal Juan Ignacio Charo. Uh, no ... Chela. American Davis Cup team skipper Patrick McEnroe is among most of tennis' panting seers who love the 6-foot-3, gangling Roddick's energy, enthusiasm, huge serve, flashy ground strokes, competitive spirit and a macho 'tude that seems to mirror the prideful characteristics of his beloved native Nebraska Cornhuskers. (If we hear one more time how Roddick had part of his house wallpapered in Big Red poster tributes or something, all of us will no doubt retch husks of corn all over our rackets.) The contrarian aspect of his physical skills and big numbers, though -- in particular, Roddick's undefeated Cup record (as if anybody cares about the Davis Cup) -- is that much of his success has been built against the likes of Leander Paes of India, whom he had to rally against in Winston Salem, N.C., last fall. Amid the crowd furor, Roddick pumped his fists and sprinted to the sideline, calling out to Captain Mac: "I love this s---!" Leander Paes? Hey Andy, Bro: Leander ain't no World Threat. And you ain't no Vin Diesel -- who, naturally, utters almost the exact same phrase ("I LIVE FOR THIS S---!") as the tattooed one is ordered to skydive out of an airplane and save the universe in the magnificent XXX. Maybe Andy is already pushing Vinny in the sex symbol department. (According to Tennis Magazine, in a fan fiction site, female fans write novellas which, among other things, place Roddick in a love triangle that ends up in Andy's bedroom.) But why hasn't the Roddick tennis franchise come to fruition yet? Well, among the IN's, how about injuries, inexperience (still) and inadequate preparation? It was over two years ago that Roddick had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. He shined that affliction on by coming back to play within two weeks. But there has been concern over the wear Roddick's intensely twisting and torquing physical game tears at his raw, teenage body. (He turns 20 on the middle Friday of the Open.) Roddick's older brother John (now running his own tennis academy) was a blossoming star before he wrecked his back while playing for the Bulldogs. Locker room sources say Andy requires as much inflammatories and medical treatments as many scarred-up tour veterans. In his first two matches against Hewitt, for example, Roddick was betrayed at Miami, 2001, by a muscle pull in his hand, and at Roland Garros that same summer when, just as the rivalry was heating up (1-1 in sets, just about to go 2-2 in games) he had to default with a pulled hamstring. Then, at this year's Australian, the angular Roddick was forced to retire against Ivan Ljubicic with a sprained ankle. While the now-resident of Boca Raton, Fla., can impose his enormous power (serves in the 140 mph range) on most opponents, when he's faced with equal strength on the other side of the net, Roddick doesn't seem to have a clue. The imposing Aussie left-hander, Wayne Arthurs, served him off the clay at Paris in June. Then at Wimbledon Greg Rusedski made Roddick look as if he was still back in Nebraska, figuring out the difference between a netcord and a goalpost. The scores were 3-6, 4-6, 2-6 (in 'Husker terms, one of those 64-6 laughers) -- and it wasn't that close. "I looked like a complete idiot," Roddick says. "I had no idea what to do." So he hauled embarrassed butt to San Antonio to visit his other brother Lawrence, a former world-class springboard diver now turned chiropractor, against whom he pounded balls even in a pouring rain. Roddick says he suddenly remembered why he loved tennis -- the purity of the hits, the free swinging, the laughing and interacting, the simplest fundamentals, accent on the f.u.n. "That worked better than just freaking out," Roddick said of his therapy sessions amid the arcs with the diver. Alas, the succeeding summer results have again traversed up the down staircase. Though Roddick reached the semis at L.A. -- where he was beaten by another close friend, Jan-Michael Gambill (only the second of his countrymen after Andre Agassi to defeat him) -- and the finals at Toronto (losing to Guillermo Canas), the subsequent twin failures to the Fernandos at Cincinnati and Indianapolis were not exactly the preferred way to establish a beachhead prior to the Open. Moreover, Roddick's sometimes alarming strategic ineptitude -- during which he reverts to looking like a helpless junior in full stalkabout -- has fueled rumors on the tour that his longtime coach, the quiet, niceguy French Morrocan, Tarik Benhabiles (a clay specialist as a journeyman player) may be ripe for replacement. One scenario even has Agassi's former guru, the wise and witty Brad Gilbert, joining the Roddick camp by year's end. Who knows? A change in coaches has seemed to re-energize the always aggressive, ascendant Number One, Hewitt. His speed, athleticism, tenacity, fighting will and baseline style has carried him to two of the past four Slam titles. He is just begging for somebody to emerge as an arch-rival. And all of tennis -- desperately searching for somebody, anybody, to replicate the cash cow that was Sampras-Agassi (if only to take some ink and airtime away from the Sisters Sledge) -- seems to be just begging for that somebody to be Roddick. While the little wizard from Oz has won all three of their encounters, the Hewitt-Roddick battle at last year's Open was very nearly as compelling as the Sampras-Agassi classic. And while the five-set quarterfinal climaxed sourly -- Roddick getting screwed on a terrible line call near the end -- lucky witnesses will recall that, absent that and Roddick's subsequent stupid meltdown, the match might have gone the other way. And Roddick, not Hewitt, might have walked over both the choking dog, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, in the semis, and the aging lion, Sampras, in the finals, to become the champion. "I know Lleyton will hold up his end," Roddick says. "But for our thing to get to be a rivalry, I've got to beat the guy sometime." Would that sometime be soon. Or rather, would that in the next couple of weeks the slugger from Omaha and the counterpuncher from Adelaide -- their ballcaps backward, their determination and confidence out front, their talent and "You Want Some Of Me" testosterone raging everywhere -- drill tennis balls at each other for several hours and (no matter who wins) the long dormant battle between the game's two previously dominating nations be joined once again. espn the magazine Scotso 08-23-2002, 02:53 AM I say Roddick goes down in the first round :D Who's with me? :D Static 08-23-2002, 04:18 AM I'm with you!
