ATLANTA (TICKER) -- Chipper Jones started the Atlanta Braves' comeback in the eighth inning and finished it in the ninth.

Jones followed Gary Sheffield's solo homer in the bottom of the ninth inning with his second of the game, giving the Braves a 7-6 victory over the Colorado Rockies and a split of their four-game series.

Atlanta was trailing, 5-2, when Jones led off the bottom of the eighth with his second homer of the series. One out later, Marcus Giles delivered a two-run single to forge a 5-5 tie.

After closer John Smoltz (3-2) gave up an RBI double to pinch hitter Greg Norton in the top of the ninth, Sheffield hit the fourth pitch from Jose Jimenez (2-8) in the bottom half over the left-center field fence for his 22nd homer. Jones smacked a 1-1 offering over the right field fence for his 19th of the season as the Braves moved to 22-1-6 in their last 29 series.

"Yes, I was," replied Jones after he was asked if he was thinking home run when he stepped to the plate against Jimenez. "With a guy like that, if you can make him get a ball up ... I'm feeling good from the left side."

Sheffield said he could not recall seeing back-to-back homers in the bottom of the ninth to win a game.

"That's probably the first time it's happened," he added. "I was just thinking of getting a good pitch and driving it. I remember facing him in the last series, I beat his sinker in the ground. I said this time I'm going to take those pitches."

Julio Franco also homered for Atlanta, which avoided its first three-game losing streak since July 13-15. At 80-43, the Braves own baseball's best record and a whopping 18 1/2-game lead in the National League East.

"We seemed destined not to win, but we kept plugging along," Atlanta manager Bobby Cox said. "It's a good win. We didn't want to go (on the road with) three straight losses."

Juan Uribe had two hits and an RBI for the Rockies, who wrapped up a 4-3 road trip but failed in a bid to win back-to-back series away from Coors Field for only the second time this season.

"It's frustrating, but they have the best record in baseball for a reason," Colorado first baseman Todd Helton said. "The bullpen's been great for us all year. Things like that happen. Overall, we had a good road trip. If you look at it that way, you can think a little more positive."

Braves starter Tom Glavine had not allowed more than two earned runs in 19 of his 27 starts. But he surrendered five runs -- three earned -- and eight hits in seven innings.

Franco's two-run blast staked Atlanta to a first-inning lead, but Colorado tied it in the second as Sandy Alomar Jr. drove in a run with a double play and Uribe came through with a two-out RBI single.

The Rockies grabbed the lead in the third on an RBI double by Gabe Kapler, who scored on an error by catcher Javy Lopez. Colorado starter Mike Hampton helped himself with an RBI double in the fourth and left with a 5-2 lead after allowing two runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings.

Justin Speier could not protect the lead as Hampton was denied a third straight win.

"It's just part of the game," Hampton said. "You just go out there and pitch as long as you can, but it's baseball. They're a team that never gives up. Today they had some timely hits, especially at the end."

Okay, well, I got up this morning at 6 AM, and I was ready to go. Like, I was awake and chipper. It was weird. :o

I ate breakfast this morning, which I never do, and of course I got sick. Bleh. So I was almost late to school.

First period I have UIL Language Arts, which is basically just a study period for me for all my UIL events. It's great because it's just me and Kyla and Megan--the newspaper/yearbook editing triumverate--and our supervisor is "Mother English" our Sophomore English teacher, so we can bring tacos and sodas to eat, and sit around and gossip and not worry about it. :p

Second period is English IV Dual Credit. There are some of those annoying Popular girls in there, but the one that pisses me off the most is stupid, so hopefully she'll A) drop the class or B) fail and get kicked out. :p There are also 2 ex-friends of mine in that period (if you cross me, I won't even bother to speak to you again) which is annoying, but oh well. I can work around that. And they don't sit in my group, which is great. ;) And my teach is sooooo cool! She cusses in class, which means I can cuss in class too. :p

Third period is Art 1, which I DO NOT want to take. I put it off until my Senior year, and the only reason I'm taking it now is because it's required by the state to graduate. :rolleyes: There are a lot of Freshman in my class, and they were scared of me, and I felt bad. So I talked to them and was really friendly. Luckily my friend Mindy, AKA Mindo, is in there with me, so I have someone my age. :p

Fourth period is Physics Advanced Placement. :rolleyes: What a joke! Our teacher is sooooooooo stupid. He's the most boring man I've ever met. I had him for Bio. 1 my Freshman year, and I didn't learn jack-shit then, and I expect even less out of this class. I'm gonna be so lost in my college Science classes, but what can I do? I'm lucky to have my friends Kyla, Casey AKA Muy Guapo, and Steven in there. We'll keep each other sane, and maybe actually manage to learn something in the process. :o Did I mention we don't even have any BOOKS for that class yet? :rolleyes:

Fifth period is "Desktop Publishing" AKA Newspaper. Our Journalism teacher from last year is now the Dean of Students or something, so we have a new teacher, who admits she knows nothing. Sooooooo, the Tri-Editor (as Megan, Kyla and I refer to ourselves :p ) have to teach the new staffers how to write news stories, conduct interviews, use a Mac, use Pagemaker, and edit the whole thing ourselves. :o

Finally, lunch! We have an "A" lunch and a "B" lunch. Mine is B. It was fun; Kyla, Muy Guapo and I went to the local Dairy Queen with our friend Jenny, who's heading off to college in Austin tonight. It was a blast.

Sixth period is Government/Economics Dual Credit. I've reserved judgement about this class for the moment, as my "high school" teacher is nice but hyperactive and a bit of a spaz. I haven't met my "college" teacher yet. He won't be here until next week, as that's when most colleges here start.

Seventh period is Calculus AP, taught by Neva, my sister's best friend and my big sister! :D The class is small, which is good as I find numbers utterly beguiling, and most of the people I can deal with. Unfortunately, there are 2 REALLY LOUD Juniors in my class, Jason and Johanna. You know the type; they're sitting right next to each other and yet still feel the need to yell. :rolleyes: Neva kept Kyla, Muy Guapo and I after class to tell us we had permission to tell them to shut up whenever we want to. :p

Eighth period is Yearbook. Because my school went to an 8 period day this year instead of a 7 period one, we somehow ended up have 2 separate classes for Yearbook. :rolleyes: I don't know why. It's going to be a BIG PAIN IN THE ASS, because Megan is in the 2nd period Yearbook, while Kyla and I are in the 8th period Yearbook. We're going to have to be verrrrrrrry careful coordinating what we do when and who we use.

There are a lot of people in Yearbook and Newspaper this year. Last year there were seven Newspaper staffers and nine Yearbook staffers; this year there's about 15 Newspaper staffers and 25 Yearbook staffers. :rolleyes: Which SOUNDS great, but isn't, because no one knows what they're doing, and most the people are only in there because of the change to an 8 period day.

See, the idea behind that was to give us more choice in our electives....but no more classes were added to the curriculum. Which means that everyone just has an extra spot to fill, which means that we have a bunch of stupid ghetto people who have no business in Newspaper and Yearbook, in Newspaper and Yearbook.

Fortunately, our new teacher basically told everyone today, "I'm just here to supervise and give out grades. These girls (the Tri-Editor) are who you answer to; if they tell you to do something, do it. And if you don't, you fail." So at least she's on our side. :p

Wishes come true

For attendance and TV purposes, tournament director Rob MacGill no doubt wishes top seed Lleyton Hewitt had made today's final.

Hewitt lost in the third round to Greg Rusedski, but Hewitt made some other wishes come true earlier in the week.

In conjunction with the RCA Championships and the Make-A-Wish Foundation, teen-agers Evan West and Katie Collier got to meet Hewitt.

West, a Center Grove High School senior, is in remission from central nervous system lymphoma. Collier, a New Palestine sophomore, suffers from Hodgkin's disease. She completed chemotherapy and radiation earlier this summer and is awaiting a report from her most recent tests.

The top-ranked Hewitt, a 21-year-old Australian, met with Collier and West for about a half-hour on Tuesday. He asked about their interests and their tennis games and answered questions.

West plays tennis for Center Grove. Collier hopes to play this spring but missed last season because of her illness.

"It was so awesome," Collier said. "He talked directly to us. He wasn't looking around or in a big hurry. It was like he wasn't even a superstar. He was a normal person."

West agreed with that assessment.

"He was very down-to-earth," West said. "It was a great experience. I was happy he was so willing to do it."

West and Collier had no idea when they were invited to the tournament that they would get to meet Hewitt.

"They told us we probably would get to meet one of the players, but we didn't know who it was," said Jeff West, Evan's father. "It couldn't have been better."

Afterward, Hewitt posed for pictures with the teen-agers and their families and signed autographs.
