Moya upsets No.1 Hewitt in rain-delayed final
By TERRY KINNEY
Associated Press Writer
August 11, 2002

MASON, Ohio (AP) -- Carlos Moya, showing the form that once had him ranked No. 1 in the world, upset Lleyton Hewitt, the current No. 1, 7-5, 7-6 (5) Sunday in the final of the $2.95 million Cincinnati Masters Series.

``I knew my hardcourt game was not bad, but I didn't expect to win this tournament,'' Moya said. He called it ``a dream come true.''

Moya, the French Open champion in 1998, was ranked No.1 in the world briefly in 1999, then injured his back.

Although he won titles at Acapulco, Bastad and Umag this year, his best previous finish in a major tournament was as the runner-up to Juan Carlos Ferrero at Monte Carlo in April.

Moya, who won $392,000, did not lose a set in six matches this week, and beat Hewitt in the final with powerful forehand strokes that even the indefatigable Australian could not reach.

The sky darkened and the lights came on early in the match. After one break apiece and the first set tied 4-4, play was suspended for 2 hours, 18 minutes because of rain.

When they resumed, Moya held serve twice, then broke Hewitt in the 12th game to take the set.

Hewitt had Moya down 5-2 in the second set, but could not put him away. Hewitt failed to hold serve twice, sending the set to a tiebreaker.

But at 5-5 in the tiebreaker, Hewitt double-faulted, then hit Moya's serve beyond the baseline on match point.

Hewitt may take home only half of the $206,000 runner-up's share. The ATP levied a fine Monday of $20,000 or half of Hewitt's winnings -- whichever is greater -- for failing to take part in a mandatory tour promotion, a pre-tournament interview with ESPN.

Hewitt plans to appeal the fine.

Hewitt, preparing for his U.S. Open title defense, has won four titles this year, including Wimbledon and the Masters Series event in Indian Wells, Calif. He is the No.1 seed in the RCA Championships that start Monday in Indianapolis.

James Blake and Todd Martin won the doubles title, worth $135,150 for the team, by beating third-seeded Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi 7-5, 6-3.

The tournament is sponsored by the Western & Southern Financial Group.

West Nile an "emerging epidemic."

.c The Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS (Aug. 11) - West Nile virus is an ``emerging, infectious disease epidemic'' that could be spread all the way to the Pacific Coast by birds and mosquitoes, the director of the Centers for Disease Control said Sunday.

The Northeast and the South have been hardest hit by the virus since it was first identified in the United States in 1999, but Dr. Julie Gerberding said birds and mosquitoes infected with West Nile are now in most states east of the Mississippi River and some to the west of it.

West Nile is ``a problem that is having an unusually high human toll this year. So it is serious, and we have to continue our public health action to combat it,'' Gerberding said on CBS' ``Face the Nation.''

Seven people with West Nile virus have died in Louisiana this year, and Mississippi officials are investigating a death they say appears to be linked to the virus. The virus has been detected in 35 states and Washington, D.C.

In Louisiana, state and local workers are spraying insecticide in residential areas where the Asian tiger mosquito and the Southern house mosquito typically lay eggs, under the assumption that the two species are the most likely carriers of West Nile.

``We have made an assumption about which species are involved in transmission of the disease here based on what has happened in other parts of the United States,'' said Dawn Wesson, a medical entomologist at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.

Gerberding said Louisiana's experience last year with the deaths of four people from St. Louis encephalitis, a mosquito-bourne virus similar to West Nile, has helped officials deal with this year's outbreak.

``I think the investments that we've made over the past several years in this kind of public health response have really paid off,'' she said.

 It's coming to get me........:o

Senators: Bush must make case

By H. JOSEF HEBERT
.c The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (Aug. 11) - Members of Congress said Sunday that President Bush has not yet made his case for an invasion of Iraq, although they would support him if there is evidence Saddam Hussein may use weapons of mass destruction.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia urged the president to give diplomacy more time to resolve the Iraqi situation and reiterated it will not allow the use of Saudi soil in an attack against Saddam.

Saudi Arabia also confirmed that it was holding 16 alleged al-Qaida members who had been turned over by Iranian officials in June after they sought refuge in that country.

Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind., said that while not inevitable, it now is ''probable'' that an invasion of Iraq will be necessary. But, he added, President Bush has to clearly tell the public why Saddam is a danger.

''The president has to make the case that ... to wait for provocation (from Saddam) is to invite a very, very large disaster,'' Lugar said on CBS' ''Face the Nation.''

Sen. Fred Thompson, R-Tenn., a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said he agreed that the president has not yet made the justification for a war with Iraq, but that ''he's in the process of doing that.''

Noting that Saddam has biological and chemical weapons and may eventually get a nuclear capability, Thompson said on ''FOX News Sunday'': ''Do we sit back and hope that we can negotiate our way out of that situation with Saddam? I don't think so.''

But Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said an attack on Iraq might simply prompt Saddam to use weapons of mass destruction ''because he'd have nothing to lose.''

''He's a survivalist. He is not a suicide bomber. ... The question is how do you contain him,'' said Levin on NBC's ''Meet the Press.'' Levin said there should be continued pressure to resume United Nations weapons inspections in Iraq.

Thompson, however, argued that an agreement over weapons inspections, if not unfettered, would simply give Saddam time - perhaps two or three years - to possibly develop a nuclear capability.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia reiterated that if Iraq were attacked, it would not be from Saudi soil.

''Under the present circumstances ... with no proof that there is a threat imminent from Iraq, I don't think Saudi Arabia will join in,'' Saudi Arabia's foreign minister, Prince Saud al-Faisal, said on ABC's ''This Week'' program.

''We see that there is movement on the diplomatic front ... and we think it is only right to give this diplomatic solution a chance before going to war,'' said the prince.

Saud also said Iran in June had turned over to Saudi Arabia 16 alleged member of al-Qaida, who had fled Afghanistan into Iran, and that information obtained from interrogating them is being shared with U.S. officials.

''The innocent will be let go and the guilty ones will be incarcerated and go to trial,'' the prince said.

Despite intense discussions within the administration about preparation for a possible invasion of Iraq, Bush on Saturday said he had no ''imminent war plan'' but that Saddam remains ''an enemy until proven otherwise.''

Bush said he believes the American people understand that chemical, biological, or eventually nuclear weapons in the hands of Saddam ''are vary dangerous for ourselves, our allies.''

On Sunday, Lugar said: ''At the end of the day we have to separate those weapons of mass destruction from Saddam.''

Likewise, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, said while the justification of an attack still must be fleshed out by the Bush administration ''we can't wait for Saddam Hussein to unleash a weapon of mass destruction.''

Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., joining Hutchison on CNN's ''Late Edition,'' acknowledged that Saddam is a threat, but said she favored a push for open inspections on Iraqi weapons, and not war.

While agreeing with Levin's approach of containment, Boxer said, nevertheless, Saddam ''needs to know if ... he even thinks of using any weapons of mass destruction, he's history.''

Pfff, of course there's evidence Saddam may use weapons of mass destruction. He certainly doesn't have them just to look at.

How Saddam Plans to Thwart Bush
Iraq's propaganda effort, aimed at keeping Arabs from backing a U.S. attack, got an unexpected boost in Washington this week
BY TONY KARON

Friday, Aug. 09, 2002
It's been a bad week for the Bush administration's anti-Saddam campaign. And that's not because of the Iraqi dictator's florid warning that any U.S. invasion would end in "disgraceful failure." The problem is that Saddam has also made plain his plan to take advantage of Washington's comparative isolation over going war in Iraq by playing hard for the middle ground. The Iraqi leader's speech reiterated offers to negotiate over arms inspections — albeit on his own terms, which so far remain unacceptable to the U.N. But the Iraqi leader knows he can always adjust his position later to comply with the international community's demands, simultaneously taking the wind out of Washington's sails. That may be why Vice President Dick Cheney hastened to warn Thursday that even a resumption of U.N. weapons inspections may not be enough to solve the big problem: Iraq's purported weapons of mass destruction.

Cheney's remarks may be directed primarily at Capitol Hill, where lawmakers insist the White House has yet to make a convincing case that the risks of going to war are outweighed by the risks of not going to war. Saddam's PR offensive won't carry the day in Congress, but it may make a difference with his real target audience: his Arab neighbors. Baghdad knows the U.S. will find it difficult to go to war without regional support, both politically and strategically. Washington needs the Gulf states, Jordan and Turkey as staging areas, but it may need their political support even more. After all, when the Bush administration launched its campaign in Afghanistan, it took great pains to emphasize that it was not making war on Islam, and the need for Arab consent may be even greater in this case: the invasion of an Arab nation in the absence of any sense of regional crisis, and with the express purpose of replacing a hostile regime with one more palatable to Washington. And unless the U.S. is ready to commit tens of thousands of troops to long-term occupation in an intensely unfriendly environment, stabilizing a post-Saddam Iraq will require not only the consent, but the active cooperation and participation of all of its neighbors.

Saddam's game plan, for now, is simple: Keep the neighbors out of Washington's camp by declaring a willingness to cooperate with the arms inspectors, and paint U.S. war plans as part of a wider American attack on the Arab and Muslim world. Better still, link it directly to the Bush administration's close relationship with the government of Ariel Sharon, whose policies offend even Washington's most moderate Arab allies. That's precisely what Saddam tried to do in 1991 when he fired SCUD missiles at Israel just as the U.S.-led coalition assault began, in hopes of persuading the Arab world that the issue was the Palestinians rather than Kuwait. The gambit failed because Israel refused to be provoked into retaliation and because the U.S. had secured unprecedented Arab support — by pressing Israel to cease settlement activity in the occupied territories, and begin negotiating with the Palestinians.

It's not hard to see why Saddam believes he may have a better shot this time around at keeping the Arabs on the sidelines. He only has to convince them that his survival in Baghdad is a lesser evil than the consequences of an American invasion. And so far, he's ahead in that game — the Saudis, Jordan, Turkey and Iran have all warned against a U.S. invasion. Ironically, however, Saddam's propaganda effort got some unintended help this week from his most intractable enemies in Washington.

First, there was that briefing to the Defense Policy Board that characterized Saudi Arabia as a terror-supporting enemy of the U.S. whose oil fields may have to be seized. Defense Secretary Rumsfeld tried to play cleanup, saying simply that "Saudi Arabia is like any other country — it has a broad spectrum of activities and things, some of which ... we agree with and some that we may not." He also pointed out that the Defense Policy Board is not an official body — true, but it is a policy advisory group appointed by the Defense Secretary himself, and is visibly influential among hawkish civilians in the defense establishment. Despite being disowned by the Pentagon, the briefing raised hackles in Arab capitals, and the Saudis reiterated their firm rejection of a war on Iraq.

But the problem runs deeper than a few ill-chosen comments. Some of the most gung-ho hawks in Washington have made the argument that toppling Saddam would facilitate an entire remaking of the Middle Eastern political equation on terms more favorable to the U.S. and Israel. And that's precisely the fear on the streets and in the corridors of power of the Arab capitals. Not that Rumsfeld is particularly concerned. On Tuesday, he went on the record disputing the characterization of the West Bank and Gaza as "occupied" by Israel, declining to criticize Israeli settlement activity there and trashing the notion of talking to the Palestinian Authority even as Bush administration officials prepared to do just that. Those positions may put him way out of step with the Bush administration's official Middle East policy, but they don't pass unnoticed in the Arab world. And to the extent that the Arab world perceives the U.S. agenda as being at odds with Arab interests and concerns, these kinds of remarks ensure that Saddam is in no danger of losing his claim to the "lesser evil" mantle.

Lleyton Hewitt, of Adelaide, Australia, throws his racket into the air after hitting his serve into the net during the second set against Carlos Moya, of Palma de Mallorca, Spain, in the final match at the Tennis Masters Series Tournament in Cincinnati, Ohio, August 11, 2002. Moya won the final match 7-5 7-6.

Hewitt unconcerned by niggling back injury
By Eleanor Preston

CINCINNATI, Ohio (Reuters) - Lleyton Hewitt revealed that a lingering back injury shouldn't upset his preparations for the forthcoming U.S. Open.

Hewitt received treatment for a stiff back during his semi-final match against Fernando Gonzalez at the Cincinnati Masters and admitted that the back was still troubling him during Sunday's 7-5 7-6 final loss to Carlos Moya.

"I was a little bit stiff before the match," Hewitt said.

"I didn't feel any twinges out there, just general stiffness. It's fine, I can play with that."

The match against Moya was delayed for two and a quarter hours by rain at the end of the first set, but Hewitt said the long wait didn't cause any adverse reaction in his back.

"There was not a huge difference," he said.

"Once you get into the match, you always sort of like continue it on."

The 21-year-old Hewitt is scheduled to play in Indianapolis this week. He has a bye into the second round and is unlikely to play before Wednesday, giving him extra time to recover from the effects of any injury.

He begins the defence of his U.S. Open title two weeks on Monday.

"I've had a little bit of a stiff back since last week and I could feel it get a bit stiff out there," said Hewitt after his semi-final.

"It's been a little bit sore and there was a couple of times where I felt a pinch. It's nothing that's going to pull me out of anything," he said.

Hewitt did not receive any treatment during the final against but said he was given massage and deep heat treatment before the match as a precaution.

Lleyton is too much of a competitor to let anyone think an injury allowed him to lose the match against Moya. He lost because he didn't step it up when he needed to...you could see him holding back on his two set points. He'll know better next time!!!

Western & Southern Financial Group Masters

Cincinnati, Ohio

C. MOYA/L. Hewitt

7‑5, 7‑6

An interview with:

LLEYTON HEWITT

THE MODERATOR: We'll open it up for questions.

Q. What's the difference between today's match and yesterday's match?

LLEYTON HEWITT: You know, I think just Carlos is A‑class, I guess. He's been there before, he knows how to play the big points well. I think that's probably the biggest difference between him and Gonzalez.

Q. How was your back today?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Yeah, not too bad. It was a little bit stiff before the match. I got some heat cream rubbed into it beforehand, just tried to loosen it up. I didn't feel any twinges out there. Just genuine stiffness. It's fine, I can play with that.

Q. The rain delay, did that have any bearing on your injury, having to stop and start again?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Not really. Not a huge difference. I just had to go through the same routine as I did before I went out to play the first time.

So, you know, sure, once you get into the match, you always like to sort of continue it on. But it wasn't that big a difference.

Q. What did you do during the break?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Just sat in the change rooms. Did nothing.

Q. Sat where?

LLEYTON HEWITT: In the change rooms. Just not a lot. Just watched the monitor, then got ready to play once. Then, you know, standing out with our bags, then we got told it was raining again. So we had to sit down and go through it all again.

Q. Did you watch it on TV, the match?

LLEYTON HEWITT: The rain or...?

Q. The replay of the first set.

LLEYTON HEWITT: No, no, I haven't seen anything. No.

Q. How many times have you lost a 5‑2 lead in a set?

LLEYTON HEWITT: I don't know. I've definitely done it before, I think, in some stages. Yeah, I didn't make too many first serves. But apart from that, I didn't hit the ball that bad.

You know, he just raised his level of game. To his credit, he played some huge points there to get the two breaks. At 5‑3, it was a huge opportunity there, if I was able to get into a third set. I felt like at 5‑2 I was starting to get on top of him ‑ breaking for the second time that set.

Q. Where do you feel this leaves you in preparation to defend the US Open title?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Hitting the ball well. You know, I've gone up another level since Toronto, which is nice. That's all I can really ask for out of the tournament.

Sure, I'm disappointed. I would have loved to have won another tournament like this. But, you know, when you sit back tomorrow and you go through what your preparation is going to be, you know, the next two weeks going into The Open, well, it's going in the right direction at least at the moment.

Q. What are your next two weeks like?

LLEYTON HEWITT: I'm playing Indy then a week off.

Q. Carlos ‑ I don't know if this is exactly accurate ‑ he said he thought you lost nine matches this year, and seven of them were to Spaniards or South American players. He felt like you maybe had trouble with that style of play. Would you agree with that?

LLEYTON HEWITT: I don't know.

Q. If so, what gives you trouble?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Yeah, I lost to a few of them this year, but I don't think it gives me that much trouble. I think I have beaten them a lot as well. You sort of don't see the first rounds I chop up a lot of the Spanish and South American players as well.

Obviously, the guys I've lost to, they've been class players. I lost to Moya, what, twice on clay, now here as well. You know, he's a former world No. 1 and a definite ‑ when he's playing his best ‑ Top 5 in the world. So, you know, that's no bad loss.

You know, some of the other guys ‑ Gaudio I remember losing to on clay, which at the time wasn't a bad match because he'd won about 15 matches in a row. Then there was Alberto Martin, first round of the Aussie Open when I wasn't 100%.

Q. What strategy did you have today against him?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Obviously tried to, you know, get into, you know, as many rallies as possible and give myself a chance to take the initiative up before he started making me run and moving the ball well. As soon as he gets around and whacks that forehand and he's on the offense, he's an extremely tough player to put back on the defense from that position. I felt like I played pretty well, you know, doing that.

But then my serve just let me off once I got to 5‑2 in the second set. You know, I was serving well and making, you know ‑‑ serving well on big points. When I was deuce and break points down, I came up with a big serve. Then I wasn't able to do that. I think that was sort of the main difference and maybe the turning point from 5‑2 up and losing at 7‑6.

Q. Did the double‑fault in the tiebreak just kill you?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Yeah. But then again at 5‑4 I went for a second serve ace and it paid off. You know, shit happens.

shit happens lol

:p :D

Lleyton's so cute!! Shit happens...but truly you get the sense he knows where the match turned, and it had a lot to do with missed first serves and opportunities that he normally takes.

I never heard of it before, with other players I mean, however...
you can buy bed sheets with Kim on, along with a cushion with Kim's face on it. The bed sheets are even having her autograph printed on it.

How about that?

Something Lleyton has to take with when he is alone I guess LOL.

For a big part you're right Julie.

However many Walloon people really like Kim best, and a number of Flemings do like Juju then... so I think it's not that black and white though.

I liked Juju more in the past, btw. :o Was a real fan...that changed over time, leading to being a non-fan nowadays.

Well at the beginning I liked her too!!! But then I heard her speaking a lot and I just couldn't hear her saying another time: I want to be first, I want to be the best pfff
