Hewitt Shows He's Boss

Lleyton Hewitt quashed the surreal Cincinnati run of unseeded Chilean Fernando Gonzalez in Saturday night's featured semifinal, rebounding from a sluggish start to earn a 6-7(3), 7-5, 6-2 victory. Proving his World No. 1 standing is no fluke, the top seeded Australian resisted the power that Gonzalez has unfurled all week and set up a classy final against Spain's Carlos Moya.

It's easy to see why Gonzalez' game has won over tennis afficionados at this year's event. Gonzalez learned to play tennis by swinging at the ball as hard as he could. His motto: Winners or bust. He tried this on Hewitt, and early on, it appeared that the Wimbledon champion might too get outmuscled by the South American underdog. But what sets Hewitt apart from the pack of players with power, is that he knows how to compete and win.

After dropping the first set in a tie-break, Hewitt remained in defense mode for much of the second set. At one point, the Australian literally was brought to his knees trying to run down a homerun batted his way. But Hewitt managed to save five break points that set, and at 5 all, he got the instrumental break, which then allowed him to even the match at a set apiece.

Gonzalez faltered on his serve to open the third set, and that set the tone for the remainder of the match. Hewitt quickly rolled out the victory, and now is a match away from claiming his second Tennis Masters Series shield. (Earlier this year, he captured the title in Indian Wells.)

"He shows why he's No. 1," Gonzalez said. "I mean, in the tough moments, he plays good... With Lleyton, I attack him and the ball is coming always, always, always."

On Sunday, Hewitt will play in his third TMS final, matching up with Spain's Moya, who hasn't lost a set this week. Moya holds a winning 3-2 record over the Australian. This year, they've met twice on clay in Monte Carlo and Rome, and the Spaniard won both matches.

Virgil

Marls you sound like my sister. She goes to school in Canada and is always saying 'these Canadians and their hockey'. Anyway, I can't tape over any tape, because I've done that so much, I've ruined most of them. I should point that tennis is not the only thing I tape. Btw, Marly did you get my correct address?

However I still feel like Lley will win. Have you guys noticed that since the US Open last year, Lleyton's been unbeatable in finals?

Hewitt, Moya advance to championship
By TERRY KINNEY
Associated Press Writer
August 10, 2002

MASON, Ohio (AP) -- Top-ranked Lleyton Hewitt beat unseeded Fernando Gonzalez 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-2 Saturday night to advance to the final of the Cincinnati Masters Series.

The Australian star will face Carlos Moya on Sunday in the championship match. The 16th-seeded Moya beat Spanish countryman Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-3, 6-4.

Hewitt, preparing for his U.S. Open title defense, has won four titles this year, including Wimbledon and the Masters Series event in Indian Wells, Calif.

Gonzalez has won a tournament in his native Chile, but has not progressed beyond the round of 16 in any of the major tournaments before this week, when he beat fourth-seeded Tim Henman and 12th-seeded Andy Roddick en route to the semifinals.

``He's a tough guy to play. He gives you absolutely no rhythm,'' said Hewitt, who had never played Gonzalez and struggled in the first set. ``He just hits the ball as hard as he can every time. He might be 3 meters wide or whale it right by me. I'm still trying to figure out how he plays.''

Moya used precise shotmaking to defeat the eighth-seeded Ferrero.

``I had a special feeling that today was going to be my day,'' Moya said. ``I just had the feeling that something was going to happen. I don't know why.''

Moya broke Ferrero's serve only twice -- once in each set -- but that was enough.

``Just one break is the match,'' Ferrero said. ``His serve is stronger than mine. Today also I didn't return so good. I return very short all the time, and he takes his forehand and moves me to the other side and takes the point.''

The break in the first set came in game four when Moya hit a passing shot down the line after moving Ferrero to the left side of the court. In the second set, Ferrero double-faulted on a break point and dropped his racket in disgust.

``For me, I think it was good,'' Ferrero said of the out call.

Moya had only to serve out to complete the upset. He got Ferrero going the wrong way to create double match point, then got Ferrero to hit into the net.

``My forehand is working really well lately,'' Moya said. ``I tried to control the game with my forehand. I also was very confident in my serve.''

Ferrero had beaten Moya five straight times since their first match in 1999 in Barcelona. In their last match, the Masters Series final in Monte Carlo in April, Ferrero won the title in straight sets.

Saturday's match was the first time two players from Spain had met in a semifinal match at any hardcourt Masters Series event.

Moya is the first Spanish finalist at this tournament since 1973, when Manuel Orantes lost to Ilie Nastase.

Although he won titles at Acapulco, Bastad and Umag, Moya's best finish in a major tournament this year was as runner-up at Monte Carlo.

The tournament is sponsored by the Western & Southern Financial Group.

Davenport reaches first final of year; Rubin says Dokic `semi-tanked'

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. (AP) -- Lindsay Davenport, making a comeback from knee surgery, reached her first final of the year with a 6-3, 6-4 semifinal victory over Ai Sugiyama in the JPMorgan Chase Open on Saturday.

Davenport improved to 9-2 playing her third tournament in as many weeks. She was a semifinalist at Stanford and Carlsbad, Calif., in her previous two outings since having left knee surgery in January.

``There's no question I'm tired physically,'' she said. ``Mentally, I'm still excited. I have a chance to win my first title of the year and I didn't think it would come nearly this quick.''

In Sunday's final, she'll face 12th-seeded Chanda Rubin, who beat No. 4 Jelena Dokic 6-0, 6-2 in 41 minutes.

``She sort of packed it in early in the second set when she didn't get up right away,'' Rubin said. ``I was surprised. I'm not sure what the reason, besides just kind of getting beat and not wanting to accept the challenge on this particular day.''

The crowd at Manhattan Country Club had barely settled in its seats when Rubin won the first set in 15 minutes. She broke Dokic three times in the second.

``I was surprised once she started a semi-tank mode,'' Rubin said. ``I was a little bit surprised that she didn't try quite as much as I thought she would at the beginning of the second.''

When Dokic didn't attempt to move toward a forehand by Rubin and dropped serve to trail 5-2, the crowd booed her.

``I wasn't feeling good,'' Dokic said through a WTA Tour spokesman. ``I've had a lot of matches and I couldn't even give 10 percent out there, physically and mentally.''

Earlier in the week, Dokic complained of having the flu.

Dokic returned a short time later to play her doubles semifinal, saying she didn't want to let down partner Kim Clijsters. She has played 19 tournaments so far this year, including three weeks in a row.

Dokic committed 40 unforced errors and hit only six winners.

2002 WESTERN & SOUTHERN FINANCIAL GROUP MASTERS
CINCINNATI, OHIO

August 10, 2002

L. HEWITT/F. Gonzalez
6-7, 7-5, 6-2

An interview with:

LLEYTON HEWITT

THE MODERATOR: We'll open it up for questions.

Q. Was there any point in that second set where you thought you might lose?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Not really - not lose. I don't think that thought ever entered my mind. It was more did it ever enter my mind, "What the hell he's going to do next," yes. I had no idea. He's a tough player to play. You know, he gives you absolutely no rhythm. I thought Wayne Arthurs didn't give me a lot of rhythm just with his serve and that, but this guy was just -- he's just letting go from the back of the court or wherever he is. He hits the ball as hard as he can every time. It's tough to play that kind of player.

Q. He said you were a fighter, that on the real important points, that's when you play the best. Do you agree with that?

LLEYTON HEWITT: I guess, yeah. I guess that's probably been the case a little bit over the last few years. You know, you sort of look at the guys in the Top 10, Top 15 in the world, and the guys who have been able to win Slams, they're able to step it up on the big points when it matters in big tournaments, in big situations. The semifinal is big here. When I was down a few break points, I came up with a big serve every time. I was 2-1 down in the second set, came up with a pretty good serve every time I was down a break point. I think it just -- it comes with a lot of practice and being very mentally tough out there, I guess, when it comes to the big situations. You know when to step it up and have that self-confidence out there.

Q. Is that just your attitude, though, in every match, that you just don't feel you're ever going to lose it? Or was this specifically with him tonight?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Yeah, I never feel that -- there's always a chance that you're going to lose, of course, but it never enters my mind when I'm out there playing. Then, too, I'm one of those people - as everyone knows - I go out there and give 100%. Too, you got to go up and shake hands at the end of the match. There's so many times, I think people have seen, where, you know, one or two points change the whole outcome of a match. You know, sometimes when you get through those matches, it changes the whole outcome of the tournament. You feel like you've sort of survived one and you're half lucky to be in there, then everything sort of changes.

Q. You had 20 aces, and really your serve was such a strong weapon. Is that a little unusual for it to be that strong?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Yeah, I actually didn't feel like I served that great out there. I don't think I got a -- probably 45, 48%, I think, first serves. I'd be guessing.

Q. 47.

LLEYTON HEWITT: 47, thanks (smiling). Make me sound good. And as I said, he's a strange guy to play. He was guessing a lot of the times on the return. He sort of was jumping immediately inside the baseline and guessing which way. So, you know, he'd make me look bloody good with a nice ace out wide which he missed by three meters, or he'd wail it past me for a winner if he guessed the right way. I didn't serve that great. He probably made it look a little bit better than it was. When he runs around, smacks a few big serves, second serves as winners like he did there, especially in the tiebreak in the first set, then he makes your serve look pretty ordinary as well.

Q. Did you tweak your back?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Yeah, I've had a bit of stiffness the last week or so, week and a half. I've been getting treatment every day on it. And I could just feel it getting a little bit stiff out there. Then I actually felt something sort of -- some twinges in there towards the end of the second set. I was just a little bit concerned. I actually wasn't going to call the trainer. Then I felt like I had the momentum. I didn't want to sort of let up on that at all after winning the second set, and I was just going to play through it. Then he had a toilet break, I saw Doug sitting on the sidelines, I wanted to try to keep it as warm as possible that change of ends.

Q. Was that more of a prevention type of thing?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Well, I could feel it out there. I've been getting treatment every day on it anyway. So, you know, it's been a little bit sore. But I think it's nothing, you know, that's going to pull me out of anything. I can definitely play through it.

Q. Do you know how you did it?

LLEYTON HEWITT: No, it's just general stiffness. The thing that worried me a little bit tonight -- I've been playing through it. I felt stiff in that area every day I've been on the court, practice and that. Normally, the adrenaline's pumping in the matches. I didn't feel that bad in the Agassi match last night, I was stretching a lot. There was a couple of times tonight where I was stretching on my serve, a few times that I felt a pinch, a bit of a - I don't know if it's a nerve sort of reaction, but like a twinge out there. That's why I called Doug, just to try to warm up so I didn't further damage it.

Q. How does it feel now? Is it something that goes away quickly with a bit of therapy?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Don't know. Not sure. Could wake up tomorrow morning, it could be stiff. I got no idea. I can't see it being a big problem.

Q. Carlos Moya.

LLEYTON HEWITT: Yeah, he's very tough. He's probably been -- since Wimbledon, since he's been back on the clay, he's probably the form player, I guess. What did he win, a couple of tournaments and another semi or something? He's a tough player to play. He's obviously getting back to his -- I think what we all think he's capable of doing and what he proved when he went to No. 1 in the world a few years ago. I've got a lot of time for Carlos, he's a really nice guy as well.

Q. How much of what you did tonight owes simply to your refusal to give in, your unwillingness to lose?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Possibly a fair bit. There's tough matches, I guess, when you get in those situations and, you know, a lot of guys would probably hop for the easier option, I guess, rather than hang out there and keep fighting. That's one of my main qualities.

Q. Are you aware of the effect that has on your opponent?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Yeah, I've never really worried about it. It's just me. I've always done it, and, you know, I'll keep fighting until I got to go and shake hands at the end of the match. But, yeah, I don't know if it does have an effect; that they think, you know, they've got to put me away right to the very last point. That's definitely an advantage for me.

Q. You seemed to get off in a strange way. What was going on in that first set? Was it just a matter of feeling him out?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Yeah, little bit. As I said, he's a strange player to play against. I'm still struggling to work out how he plays (laughter). The first few games he was sort of rolling his serve in, then he'd run around, smack a forehand back fence, then he'd hit a winner. I just tried to keep a few balls in play. Then I lost my serve in the third game. I hit two double-faults, and I sort of went for my serve a little bit more because a couple of points before that he ran around and hit probably one of the biggest forehands I've ever seen on a second serve. I went for it a little bit. I probably really didn't have to pull the trigger at that point in the third game, you know. If I was playing him again, then I probably wouldn't have gone for it so much early on. But then he played -- as I said, he came out and played the back fence four points in a row in the next game and gave me the break back straightaway.

Q. The way he hits it, does it make you want to be more aggressive with your serve?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Yeah. Yeah, little bit. You always know that as soon as you hit a ball that's slightly short, even, you know, sometimes you hit a good depth ball, and he'll still try and whack a winner off it. Sort of gets you on the defensive straightaway. When you have an opportunity to attack, it's pretty important. I can't say he's got the best defensive skills around.

Q. Now that you have a victory over him, how can you assess his skills, his talent? Can he be a threat at the US Open?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Gonzalez?

Q. Yes.

LLEYTON HEWITT: Yeah, for sure. He's a tough player to play against. He's beaten Henman, Krajicek and Roddick three matches in a row. They're three class players. They're contenders for the US Open. So I can't see why he's not a chance. But then again, you have five sets playing that style of tennis. Then, you know, it's gonna be tough to do it, you know. But with his power, I think he's gonna have days when he looks incredible and he's gonna have days when he struggles a bit.

Q. Also yesterday you complimented his forehand. What can you say about his backhand?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Yeah, he's got a nice backhand. I think he's probably -- over the last few months, I think it's gotten better and better since I saw him play last. He was more inconsistent on it a few months ago. Now he probably waits for the right ball a little bit more on his backhand. Obviously, though, his forehand is still his main strength. You know, he's always trying to run around his backhand to hit that forehand.

Q. In your opinion, what makes him a great player?

LLEYTON HEWITT: I don't know. A little bit like Andrew Ilie, I guess. I don't know how much experience is gonna be. With some of those guys, they sort of can look incredible and they play very entertaining tennis. But on big points, is that always going to help you win the big matches? I don't know. Some matches it will, some it won't, I'm sure. But whether he can learn to I guess sort of - I don't know - control his power a little bit in some important points, then that may help him.

Q. How was your confidence at the end of the first set when he won the tiebreak? Did you think you could lose the match?

LLEYTON HEWITT: There was always a chance I could lose, but it never entered my mind, you know. It's only a set, you know? Two sets to go. I was right in that set. Had 4-3, love-30, missed a short forehand I probably could have gotten. He's the type of guy that gets down on himself and strings together a lot of errors when you put that pressure on. Really, I felt like I could have just been serving for the first set at 5-3. So I tried to take the positives out of the set. And I knew his game a little bit better going into the second set, but it was still tough out there.

Q. You played Carlos three times this year. Talk about those matches.

LLEYTON HEWITT: I won the first one in Indian Wells first round. Then I lost in Monte-Carlo and Rome.

Q. Different surface.

LLEYTON HEWITT: It's on clay, obviously. I'd prefer to play on hard court; I think everyone knows that. And, yeah, he's a great hard court player as well. He's playing a lot better, I think, than he was in Indian Wells. He was just starting. I could tell there that he was -- I think he won a tournament the week before Indian Wells on clay, maybe Acapulco or something like that. But he actually was starting to time the ball like he did when he got to No. 1 after winning the final of Indian Wells or something that one year. He was starting to get around and use his forehand and his first serve. He's got a big first serve for sort of a "clay court specialist" type of guy. He's very underrated.

Even on the final point when she hit it out she was booed. 2nite itz Kim/RT Vs Daniella/Ai

ANTHRAX!

Doctor Denies Anthrax Probe

By LAURA MECKLER
.c The Associated Press

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (Aug. 11) - A bioweapons expert under scrutiny for the anthrax attacks denied involvement with the tainted letters and said Sunday that "the heinous acts of biological terrorism'' appalled him.

``I am a loyal American and I love my country,'' Dr. Steven J. Hatfill said in a statement. ``I had nothing to do with the anthrax letters and it is terribly wrong for anyone to contend or think otherwise.''

Law enforcement officials have said Hatfill, 48, is one of about 30 scientists being looked at in the anthrax investigation. The investigation remains unsolved 10 months after tainted letters killed five, sickened more than a dozen people and put many Americans on edge about opening their mail.

After ``one of the most intensive public and private investigations in American history, no one has come up with a shred of evidence that I had anything to do with the anthrax letters,'' Hatfill said in a statement he read outside his lawyer's office.

Law enforcement officials have said that Hatfill is not a suspect and that no evidence links him to the anthrax letters last fall. They have described him as a ``person of interest'' in their investigation.

``I am appalled at the heinous acts of biological terrorism that caused death, disease and havoc in America starting last fall, but I am just as appalled that my experience, knowledge and service relative to defending Americans against biological warfare has been turned against me in connection with the search for the anthrax killer,'' Hatfill said.

Sauids Probe Terror Suspects

By H. JOSEF HEBERT
.c The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (Aug. 11) - Sixteen suspected al-Qaida fighters who fled Afghanistan were handed over by Iran to Saudi Arabia, which is interrogating them, the Saudi foreign minister said Sunday.

``The innocent will be let go and the guilty ones will be incarcerated and go to trial,'' Prince Saud al-Faisal said. Iran ``cooperated with us'' in handing them over, he said, but declined to speculate on whether that reflects improved U.S.-Iran relations.

Saud said on ABC's ``This Week'' that Iran's ``cooperation with us has been very important and very significant in fighting the terrorists.''

He said in a Washington Post interview published Sunday that information obtained from the captives was being made available to the United States.

Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah's foreign policy adviser, Adel Al-Jubeir, said on NBC's ``Meet the Press'' that for ``those that deserve punishment ... the punishment will be severe.''

On another subject, the foreign minister reiterated that Saudi Arabia would not allow use of Saudi soil in a U.S. attack on Iraq. The United States should ``give a diplomatic solution a chance before going to war,'' the prince said.

``We see there is movement on the diplomatic front on this issue,'' he said without elaboration.

``There is no proof there is a threat imminent from Iraq,'' Saud said in explaining his country's refusal to all the United States to use his country in such an attack.

The 16 suspected al-Qaida fighters are reportedly Saudi citizens. The prince said they were turned over in June. About the same time, Iranian officials said publicly that Iran was returning any captured al-Qaida operatives to their home countries.

President Bush has labeled Iran, Iraq and North Korea part of an ``axis of evil'' that threatens global stability.

Sen. Fred Thompson, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said that despite the latest developments ``Iran's track record (on terrorism) is not very good.''

Iran in the past ``has cooperated with and assisted'' al-Qaida, Thompson, R-Tenn., told ``Fox News Sunday.''

The decision to turn over suspected al-Qaida members to Saudi Arabia ``serves the purpose of the Saudis and also the Iranians,'' he said.

Thompson characterized Saudi Arabia's reluctance to support action against Iraq as ``self-preservation'' to blunt criticism from the religious extremists within Saudi Arabia.

He called U.S.-Saudi relations ``a marriage of convenience'' because ``they need us and we need them.''

U.N.: Iran Violates Refugee Accord

By CHARLES J. HANLEY
.c The Associated Press

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - The U.N. refugee agency complained Sunday that Iranian authorities are pressuring Afghan refugees to leave their longtime homes in Iran and return to Afghanistan involuntarily.

Such induced returns violate an agreement signed by the Iranian and Afghan governments and the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees in April, said Maki Shinohara, UNHCR spokeswoman in Kabul.

She said the number of Afghan refugees crossing the border from Iran rose from an average of 6,500 weekly in July to 10,000 in the first week of August. UNHCR staff in eastern Iran warned that 3,000 were crossing the border on Sunday alone. The U.N. agency was scrambling to erect additional tents to house the sudden influx.

Some returnees said Iranian authorities had refused to register their children for the new school year, and were informing refugees that if they did not return to Afghanistan immediately they would not be eligible for U.N. financial and other assistance.

This report of a U.N. deadline is untrue, Shinohara said.

``We have raised several times our concerns inside Iran,'' she told reporters. ``Unfortunately, we are seeing some of the effects of this announcement starting this past week.''

The U.N. agency embarked on a huge repatriation program for the more than 4 million Afghan refugees outside the country's borders in March, three months after a U.S.-led military campaign brought down the Taliban government and generally restored peace to Afghanistan.

More than 1.4 million Afghan refugees are in Iran, UNHCR reports, having crossed into the neighboring country during 23 years of Afghan war. Of them, 124,500 have returned under the U.N. assistance program this year. The vast majority of the 1.5 million Afghan returnees under the program have come from camps in Pakistan.

The U.N. agency stresses the voluntary nature of returns, by refugees who feel confident they can resettle in their former villages or elsewhere. It points out that forced returns, to places where security or economic support are inadequate, will often backfire and lead returnees to leave the country again.

464,000 PT Cruisers Recalled

.c The Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) - DaimlerChrysler AG on Friday recalled more than 450,000 of its popular, retro-styled PT Cruisers because of a fuel pump leak.

The PT Cruiser has been one of the most successful vehicles in the Chrysler Group's lineup since it was introduced two years ago.

Officials discovered the leak following a government crash test, the automaker said in a statement.

There are no known incidents or customer complaints related to the problem, DaimlerChrysler said. The company will install a secondary seal to the top of the fuel pump module.

A quarter of the 464,315 vehicles being recalled, all from the 2001 and 2002 model years, also need repair of a separate problem with the underhood fuel supply line, which may rub against the air conditioning service port.

That could result in a fuel leak, the automaker said.

Owners will be notified by mail.

Integra tops the stolen car list

A study shows Acura Integra is the most stolen new car model in the U.S.
May 15, 2002: 3:33 PM EDT

WASHINGTON (CNN) - The Acura Integra tops a new study listing the most stolen passenger vehicles for the model years 1999-2001, according to the Highway Loss Data Institute.

The list correlates numbers of each 1999-2001 model passenger vehicle thought to be on the road with the frequency that it is stolen to determine which cars thieves want most often. Other studies don't use that formula -- usually concluding that the most stolen vehicles are models that most populate the highways, the institute said.

Theft investigators believe that Integras are so popular with thieves because of their parts, according to Kim Hazelbaker, HLDI senior vice president.

"Many of those parts, like the more powerful engine, end up on modified Honda Civics," Hazelbaker said. The Civic and the Integra share the same platform.

According to the study, the Integra was stolen with a frequency of 21.7 times per 1,000 insured vehicles on the road in a year.

The Integra was stolen more than eight times as often as the average car, and 2.5 times more frequently than the Jeep Wrangler -- the vehicle second on the list -- according to the institute.

The average U.S. car is stolen 2.6 times per 1,000 insured vehicles, according to the study. The Wrangler is stolen, the institute said, 8.5 times per 1,000 insured vehicles.

CDC: West Nile could spread throughout U.S.
August 11, 2002 Posted: 3:01 PM EDT (1901 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- West Nile virus is an "emerging" epidemic that could spread throughout the United States, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Sunday.

"It's a problem that is having an unusually high human toll this year," Dr. Julie Gerberding said on CBS' "Face the Nation." "So it is serious, and we have to continue our public health action to combat it."

Gerberding said the population of birds infected is much broader than with most other viral infectious diseases that cause a similar type of encephalitis, so the virus spreads more efficiently.

"Wherever the birds are going, the mosquitoes are following, and that really does set the stage for transmission across the country," she said.

Gerberding's comments follow reports that two more people have died from the West Nile virus in Louisiana, bringing the number of deaths in the state so far this year to seven.

The total number of states where the virus has been found in animals -- horses, birds or mosquitoes -- is 36, while humans have contracted the virus in six states and the District of Columbia.

The CDC has reported a total of 136 human infection cases: Louisiana (85), Mississippi (34), Texas (12), Illinois (2), Alabama (1), Indiana (1) and the District of Columbia (1).

The latest victims in Louisiana were a 76-year-old woman in St. Tammany Parish who died August 2 and a 94-year-old woman in Tangipahoa Parish who died August 4, said Dr. Erin Brewer, regional medical director for the Louisiana Office of Public Health.

Brewer said another 85 people in the state have been sickened by the virus, 59 of them with the most serious symptoms: encephalitis or meningitis or both. They are potentially fatal swellings of the brain or of the membranes that cover it. Both conditions can be fatal. Nine of the 59 are hospitalized in intensive care units.

In Indiana, a 46-year-old woman who was hospitalized for four days with flulike symptoms turned out to be infected with West Nile virus, said Dr. William Dannacher, health officer for Wabash County. She has since recovered and been discharged, he said.

At highest risk for becoming infected with the mosquito-borne virus are the elderly, those with compromised immune systems and young children.

Most infections are mild, and symptoms, which don't always appear, include fever, headache, and body aches, occasionally with skin rashes. A more severe infection may be marked by headache, high fever, neck stiffness and disorientation.

Dr. Lyle Petersen, a West Nile virus expert for the CDC, said the virus causes severe symptoms in one of every 150 people infected.

Most people get either no symptoms or milder expressions of the disease.

 It's coming for us Scott!
