Malisse lops plans for pony tail chop

CINCINNATI, Ohio (Reuters) - Fans hoping for a freshly-shorn Xavier Malisse are in for a disappointment after the Wimbledon semi-finalist lost his nerve at the last minute.

The Belgian had hinted he would lop off his pony tail after reaching the semi-finals of the grasscourt grand slam last month.

But at the Masters tournament in Cincinnati this week he admitted he had lost his nerve.

"It's hard to do. I don't want to lie to people or let them down...I was going to do, but I decided I couldn't," he grinned.

"I just couldn't do it -- it's the way people know me. It's more of an image thing."

Ello This song is playing on VH1 now :hearts:

Eternal Flame
( The Bangles )

Close your eyes, give me your hand, darling
Do you feel my heart beating, do you understand?
Do you feel the same, am I only dreaming?
Is this burning an eternal flame?

I believe it's meant to be, darling
I watch when you are sleeping, you belong to me
Do you feel the same, am I only dreaming
Or is this burning an eternal flame?

Say my name, sun shines through the rain
A whole life so lonely, and then you come and ease the pain
I don't want to lose this feeling

[break]

Say my name, sun shines through the rain
A whole life so lonely, and then you come and ease the pain
I don't want to lose this feeling

Close your eyes and give me your hand
Do you feel my heart beating, do you understand?
Do you feel the same, am I only dreaming
Or is this burning an eternal flame?

[break]

Is this burning an eternal flame?

An eternal flame?

(Close your eyes and give me your hand
Do you feel my heart beating, do you understand?
Do you feel the same, am I only dreaming
Or is this burning an eternal flame?)

Audit Finds Another $3.3 Billion

By MATT MOORE
.c The Associated Press

NEW YORK (Aug. 9) - WorldCom Inc. uncovered another $3.3 billion in bogus accounting, bringing the total to some $7.1 billion.

The company also said it could find more accounting problems as it moves forward with its internal investigation.

The announcement Thursday night was the latest in a series of accounting scandals that have plagued American business this year.

Clinton, Miss.-based WorldCom, the parent of MCI, the country's second-biggest long distance company, also said it may write off $50.6 billion in goodwill and other intangible assets when it does restate its finances to adjust for the accounting problems. If it does, it would be one of the biggest such write-offs in U.S. corporate history.

The company previously reported finding $3.8 billion in accounting irregularities for 2001 and the first half of 2002. The latest discovery was made as the company reviewed its books for 1999 and 2000, with most of it tallied in 2000.

As a result, WorldCom said it would restate its financial statements for all of 2000, 2001 and the first quarter of 2002.

WorldCom, the once high-flying long-distance and Internet services company, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection July 21 with the company listing $107 billion in total assets and $41 billion in debts. It was the biggest bankruptcy filing in U.S. history.

Thursday's additional restatement comes amid a string of accounting scandals that has tarnished some of the nation's largest firms, felling once mighty companies like Enron and Global Crossing. The fallout from the revelations of corporate malfeasance has severely shaken investor confidence, pummeling stocks and pension funds.

WorldCom spokesman Brad Burns said the figures announced Thursday have already been reported to the Securities and Exchange Commission and that the additional findings won't impact the company's ability to keep operating.

''The company identified the financial issues to the investigative authorities and we are working hard to get the company back on solid financial footing,'' Burns said.

Burns said investors and creditors should be aware that additional amounts of improperly reported pretax income and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization could be discovered and announced.

He said the company issued the warning as part of its policy of being ''open and forthright.''

Arthur Andersen LLP had been WorldCom's auditor until May. KPMG LLP is now auditing WorldCom's financial statements for 2000-2002. Until that is finished, the total impact won't be known, the company said.

The accounting fraud that occurred in 2000 is said to differ from the techniques used in 2001 and 2002, according to a report Thursday by the financial news network CNBC.

In the latest case, the report said, former chief financial officer Scott Sullivan is believed to have used a variety of techniques to bolster operating income, including reversing reserves for bad debts into operating income.

Last week, Sullivan and former controller David Myers were charged with hiding the nearly $4 billion in expenses and lying to investors and regulators in a desperate bid to keep the company afloat.

But whether the company's former chief executive, Bernard Ebbers, had knowledge of the deceptive accounting hasn't been determined.

In an interview Thursday night with financial news network CNBC, Ebbers' attorney said his client had nothing to do with the decisions made at the company.

''I'm certain of this. When the investigation is done, there will not be a shred of credible evidence that Bernie Ebbers had a thing to do with those (accounting) decisions,'' said Reid Weingarten of Steptoe & Johnson LLP, a Washington, D.C-based law firm. ''Accounting decisions are arcane. They're mysterious for people who are not trained in the science. Bernie Ebbers certainly was not.''

It's all just about greed and personal careers, integrity and good business sense and responsibility are ancient terms to these guys.

Jelena Dokic Says She'd Prefer To Stay In Yugoslavia, But Is Uncertain About Future Home

08/09/2002

Jelena Dokic prefers to avoid packing up and picking up another passport, but admits her future home remains uncertain. Yesterday, Dokic's controversial father, Damir Dokic, announced he plans to move his family from Yugoslavia to Great Britain. Last night, Dokic addressed her father's flight plans.

"I'd like to stay at home in Yugoslavia if that's possible," said Dokic, who advanced to the quarterfinals of the JP Morgan Chase Open in Los Angeles after her opponent, Janette Husarova retired while trailing 4-0. "I don't know if it would be or not. I guess we'll find out by the end of the year."

The 19-year-old Dokic said she has not discussed possible plans for a move with her father and said an immediate move is not imminent.

"If I did happen it would be a long-term thing," Dokic said. "He has some plans to do something. I don't know what it is but it's not happening right now. I haven't discussed it in full with him, so I'm not thinking about that while I'm playing."

Dissatisfied with the locations Yugoslav officials have offered for their house, Damir Dokic announced he is ready to find a new home — in Great Britain. Human headline-maker Damir Dokic said today he is prepared to move his family out of Yugoslavia and "register (Jelena) in England."
"I've had enough of everything," Damir Dokic told the Belgrade paper Vecernje Novosti. "I am going to the municipality of Stari Grad to de-register Jelena. She will no longer be an inhabitant of Belgrade. I will register her in England, to pay taxes and everything else there."

While Damir Dokic's threats of leaving Yugoslavia may be a ploy to persuade officials to consent to his demands to build a house and tennis center for his family, the former boxer has a history of battling with government and tennis association officials.

The Dokic family has gone through countries almost as quickly as Marat Safin goes through coaches.

Born in Belgrade, Jelena Dokic and her family emigrated from Serbia to Sydney, Australia when she was 11 years old. Dokic played for Australia in the Fed Cup and in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, but her relationship with Tennis Australia officials soured as her father accused officials of "rigging" the Australian Open draw against his daughter. The unseeded Dokic drew defending champion Lindsay Davenport in the opening-round of the Australian Open in January of 2001. Her father was furious over the draws his daughter received in both 2000 and 2001 and charged the draw was "fixed."

Shortly before the 2001 Australian Open, Jelena Dokic renounced her Australian citizenship and has represented Yugoslavia ever since. The family also has a home in Saddlebrook, Florida.

While Damir Dokic is often viewed as a distraction capable of creating controversy his daughter is often left to address, Jelena said she supports her father's decision for the the family future.

"I'm sure he has good reasons," Jelena said. " We had a lot of problems there, a lot of troubles. If we do something, there's a good reason for it. We just don't do things because of small things that happened. There are a lot of things that happened over there and a lot of not so good things for me,"

Tennis is a global game, but Dokic is already sounding like a weary world traveler tiring of her father's multiple-choice approach to countries.

"I had to move to Australia and then back home," Dokic said. "I don't think I have home right now. I would like to settle, but while you play tennis there are a lot of players living in three or four countries, so that's normal. I don't think you stay in one place for more than maybe a few weeks or a month or two of the year."

The Dokic family has split times in their homes in Belgrade and at the Saddlebrook Resort in Florida since leaving Sydney. With her father rarely appearing at tournaments, Jelena Dokic has produced the best results of her career this season. She was runner-up to Venus Williams at last week's Acura Classic and has reached a career-high No. 5 in the world.

:wavey: Eva!

I feel your pain, V, my sister has been seriously grating on my nerves the last few days. She's 8 years older than me, and most of the time she treats me like an equal and we get along pretty well, but lately she's been acting all condescending. Ugh. But she's getting married next June, so I won't have to put up with her much longer. :p

But other than that I'm doing fine. School starts on the 19th and I'm looking forward to that. :o A couple of my friends came over this morning to compare our schedules, and we have a lot of classes together, so that's good. Oh, are you gonna be getting coverage of Lleyton's match tonight? Hopefully you'll get him and not Gonzalez/RodPrick.

Lucky you Marly. Wish mine was leaving. Although she is returning to school at the end of the month. I don't know if my sanity can take it. That's her main problem. She is such a freaking intellectual snob. Okay, so she's made the Dean's List every bloody year. So what, and she always takes someone else's side over mine. Whatever. I am assuming that you're going to college right? In any case, yes I will be seeing Lley's match. That should be interesting, watching it with Agassi's no.1 cheerleader.

Ferrero/Arthurs just started.

I'm going to be a senior in high school, V. (I'm 17; my sister is 25.) I'm not exactly sure what I want to major in in college, but nothing to do with math! Math is my nemesis. :p I'm co-head editor of my school newspaper, and it looks like I'm gonna be co-editor of the school yearbook too. I'd really like to get into sports writing, tennis in particular. ;)

That's nice. You can save us from the stupid sports journalist around, and finally we can get a journalist who has nice things to say about Lleyton. Speaking of which, I read that really offensive article posted yesterday, and can I suggest that we avoid any derogatory articles about either Lleyton or Kim, on this board. Printing it gives these idiots attention they don't deserve.

Murkofan
08-09-2002, 07:57 PM
I'm all for that, V! It just pisses all of us off anyways.

Assuming I do become a tennis writer like I'd like to, I'm gonna follow those old-fashioned rules of journalistic integrity, like giving the facts in a story, not subtly twisting them to suit your purpose. I'm sure when people read stuff they're able to tell whether or not the writer likes or dislikes the subject, but sometimes it's done in such a devious way it's hard for a non-writer to tell they're being improperly influenced instead of being left to draw their own conclusions. I think that's an abuse of a journalist's power, and it's not something that I'll do.

But it all works out for Lleyton, since we know he's a good guy anyways. ;)

Virgil
08-09-2002, 08:05 PM
My point exactly. You know what really got me about that article is that in the same breath that the little shit is condemning Lley for the Blake incident, he's putting Kim down in every negative way possible. It's like because she's white, it's okay. Can you imagine the backlash if he had said the same things about the Williams sister? People would be screaming racism. Let's attack the innocent Belgian girl though. I wonder if these bastards even care that they could be damaging an innocent nineteen year old girl's confidence. Thank god Kim seems to be really well adjusted. Sorry for the rant, I get a little pissed off when people attack other people needlessly.

Murkofan
08-09-2002, 08:14 PM
No, I know exactly what you mean, V, and I feel the same way. Apparently, the hypocrites of the world are blind.
The thing that gets me about all the race issues in America is exactly what you pointed out--if you say something bad about a black person or player, you're a racist. But if you say something bad about someone who's white, it's okay, just because they happen to be the majority of the population.

The way I look at it, if you're a jack-ass, you're a jack-ass, black or white. That doesn't matter. I just get annoyed with people who get all up-in-arms for equality between blacks and whites, then turn around and feel like they can bash a white person just because they're white and get away with it. But I digress.

Murkofan
08-09-2002, 08:15 PM

Exactly Marly. Whatever though, idiots aren't worth this much of our time. About Lley's match tonight, who thinks it's going to three sets. Only reason I think so, is because he hasn't been serving well. That might make the match a little tougher. Btw, why are we talking about Maths? I literally get sick thinking about that subject.

ikke
08-09-2002, 08:22 PM
Well I kinda like maths, some subjects

Murkofan

Maths= http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/pukeface.gif

Yup, I think tonight's match will probably go 3 sets as well. Ordinarily, I'd pick Lleyton to win, but he hasn't been playing great as of yet. Like V said, his serve has been pretty minging lately. He'll have to step it up on that big-time if he wants to win.

ikke
08-09-2002, 08:25 PM
He will win, but difficult

Murkofan
08-09-2002, 08:28 PM
If Lleyton wins, I hope Gonzalez makes RodPrick go 3 sets so he's nice and tired and even a bigger target for our boy to blow up. ;)

But if Agassi wins, I want Gonazlez to beat RodPrick. I don't think I could stand listening to Pat and Cliff singing the praises of Double Head and the Drama Queen at the same time. http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/puke.gif

Virgil
08-09-2002, 08:28 PM
Agreed Marly. Also, he definitely cannot have that kind of slow start he had yesterday. I mean did anyone else notice that in the first set, Lley looked to be completely bored on the court? I mean he was losing and he didn't even swear once. It's like he really didn't want to be there. He has to be completely alert tonight, but my hopes are still strong.

She can cheer as much as she likes for baldy(who I do like), but if I get too vocal for Lley, she'll find a way to pick a fight with me. Especially if Lleyton is winning, it will really piss her off. Lleyton first needs to get into the semis. He has to play better than yesterday or Agassi is going to win tonight.

Lleyton knows win to step it up ;)

Seriously Cilla, if it was Lleyton vs. Juan Carlos, I would probably just watch and not cheer for either person.
