This pic is of a whole stack of chemistry people from my uni that got their PhD's in 2001... I know everyone in that pic (haha).

See the 5 people standing in the back row? See what they're wearing? :o :o :o Well, I'll get to parade around in that costume too, and if I get pics taken of myself, I'll post them.... few months to go though.

EDIT: yanked the photo for now!

Phew! I know. Damn LL for putting his fans through the agony. :( But.... a win is a win :D

And Cills, do not get up to watch Lleyton again;) j/k :p I agree, he makes it tough on himself. He's been having those mid-match slumps lately. What's up with that? I hope the next one is just a bit easier. :p Don't know how he's gonna beat guga if he continues to be hot/cold. Atleast it seems like he's serving better :)
Cills, give me the lowdown. what went wrong? :( My guess is he was a bit nervous. He has so much pressure on him. Although he doesn't admit I'm sure he feels it. I think he'll get better from now on. :D

Do you think players have worked out how to beat Ll? If they do what Moya and Norman did and take all the pace off the ball, giving Ll nothing to work with and then pound him with a big forehand what options does he have in response to this? The magic phrase S&V comes to mind but, oh, I forgot, he can't serve. Any ideas?

C'mon_Lley
01-14-2003, 09:01 PM
LOL! @ his serve :p

um, I don't know. If he starts loosing too much then I'd say the players have worked out. He'll have his off days like everyone else. But yes, sometimes he has trouble dealing with the power players like he did against Safin at TMS Paris where he got bageled. :o
Sooner or later he'll have to change the way he plays coz he won't be as quick when he's say 27,28.
As for S&V, I think he's a really good volleyer (sp?) If he can get those 1st serves in I think he'd try and come in a bit more.

Hey! :wavey: Well I think it was a mixture of things really. I think nerves did play a factor but not too much, I think he always felt he was going to win but it was just a case of biding his time. I think the thing with Lleyt is that he was probably slightly negative in his play i.e He was waiting for Larsson to tire and maker mistakes in order to win rather than being more postive and raising his own level to put him away. But Larsson was a stubborn opponent with a massive & I mean massive forehand which he used to great effect when LL dropped a second serve short and not wide enough. I agree with you Dolly that if he gets a 1st serve in he could serve and volley more & I think he probably should coz he is a competent volleyer & the net. But to illustrate Duck's point I agree that certain players like Moya, Safin have figured out his style of play, they slow it down and LL doesn't like to create his own pace so..& I hope he can step it up Vs a resurgent Guga. Assuming he doesn't struggle against Larkham :o

At least Guga has never done great here. I was really hoping Arazi could take a set or two off him, but nothing seems to be going our way. :p

I think gaining weight and muscle is a good thing for Lleyton. I think it's a pretty well known fact by now that he struggles when required to create his own pace. He can--I've seen him rip some nice forehands down the line--but can he keep it up for a whole five set match? I don't know. At this point, in the beginning of the season, I don't worry about how his body will hold up like I did from about the US Open last year on through Shanghai. I do worry about his ability to hang in there, shot for shot, blow for blow, match after match, with guys who are 1) bigger, 2) stronger, and 3) have figured out--or at least have an idea about--how to beat Lleyton.

Now on to what BBB said about Lleyton playing negatively--I've heard American commentators say again and again how Lleyton plays. When he's down in a match, he gets more aggressive, goes for his shots a bit more, and puts some extra oomph in to them. But when he's ahead, he plays more conservatively, just keeping the ball in play and waiting for his opponent to make the mistake. That's all well and good--it's certainly come off for him the majority of the time so far--but imo, he needs to stay on the attack more than he does. He certainly has the ability to do so, especially now that he's healthy and buff.

All of this being said, I haven't actually seen the match yet. :p I'm up at school right now, finishing the latest issue of the paper, which is behind schedule as usual. (The Tri-Editor failed a staffer today. :D) I think ESPN showed this match tape-delay, rather than RodPrick's, and if they did, I'll watch it today and be back with more opinions. :p

Yep, totally right. I got really frustrated when he kept playing so conservatively in the 4th set, coz it was so blatent that Larsson would unload the big bomb and Lleyton would be stranded in no-man's land. He always starts playing the slice backhand & I'm always like agghh what are you doing :p

Anna K was playing stanford torney I think, and our local tv station covered it for us. He decided to ask some guys in the crowd about why they like to watch Anna K. Cills, Jules posted some info at LLand about the flag and the king LL was talking about.

In Australia, we use the expression 'winning the flag' for the team that wins the AFL premiership and also the rugby league premiership. They get a big trophy too but they also get a premiership 'flag' and that is where the expression comes from. Also, if you were wondering, 'The King' is AFL player Wayne Carey who used to play for another team, the kangaroos, but at the beginning of last year he had an affair with his vice-captain's wife (he was the captain), so he didn't play in the AFL last year. Before this he was arguably the best player in the league and now he is playing for Adelaide. Hope this helps.

Pfff @ LL's love for the crows. :p

I set my VCR to tape ESPN's coverage today, just in case (since Venus beat Ansley 6-3 6-0 or whatever it as  ) they showed Mardy beating MM. I have to see that. :D

Although I have to admit, I wouldn't've complained too much if MM had made it to the SFs, because he probably would've played DH. Did y'all see that DH beat Lee 6-1 6-0 6-0? :o I'm afraid he's going to steamroll through everyone, make the final, and have tons more energy than Lleyton.

But oh well, MM is out. :p I hope that if DH makes the SFs, he has a nice love 5 setter with Juanqui. :D

And I hope everyone in Lleyton's half of the draw gets food poisoning and drops out. :D

I don't find Mardy attractive either but Go Fish! :p

Oh and this is what DH said about the pressure on Lleyton:rolleyes:

"I don't think he's too concerned and nor should he be. We all live with pressure," said Agassi, who missed last year's Australian Open with injury and was last beaten here by American Vince Spadea in the fourth round in 1999.

"It's a factor in stepping up and executing your tennis. To see someone in Australia carrying the mantle is a great thing."

Oh yeah, DH you know all about pressure of an entire nation expecting you to win. We all know how popular tennis is in the US. I wonder how many people actually saw his match.:o I remember Johny mac answering a question from a viewer during USO that why is it so hard for Aussies and Brits (Timbo) to win their home slam unlike Americans. Mac said that's coz they've a lot of pressure on them in their countries whereas in US people aren't so interested in tennis like they are in baseball and basketball so its easier for them.
 :fiery: DH should shut the fuck up coz he doesn't have a clue about the situation LL is in only Timbo can understand it.

Remember LL talked about Crabby, an aussie youngster. Here's what he had to say about LL. :D

Q. The fact that Pat Rafter didn't make huge steps until 23, 24, does that give you inspiration?
JAYMON CRABB: For sure. For sure. There's been a few Aussie guys - Lleyton is obviously an exception. He's a bit of a freak :p :D

Q. The girls talked about Alicia's win the other day being an inspiration. Obviously, Lleyton is an inspiration?
JAYMON CRABB: For sure. He's been No. 1 in the world the last two years. It's great to watch him, the fighting spirit, the way he plays for Australia. Yeah, he's inspirational, yep.

Q. Is he perhaps even more inspirational to you than Rafter?
JAYMON CRABB: Yeah, for sure, yep. The way I sort of play a little bit further behind the baseline than him, but still run balls down and, yeah, try to hang in points the same, yep.

I also loved how Wayno said he thought about how LL digs deep in his tough matches to get through his(Wayno's) 1st rnd on monday. :D

Stef's report from LLand.

I came with my friend Louise for Day 2 of the AO. We got there around 9 and wandered around the practice courts. There was no one we knew so we asked a security guard with the schedule for practises about Lleyton, Kim and Andy. The security guy was really nice and he told us that Lleyton would practise at 12-1 on Court 17 and Andy would be on Court 20 from 1-2. Unfortunately Kim would be practising on Vodafone Arena between 10-10.30 and as we had Rod Laver Arena tickets, we couldn't get into Vodafone. At around 10, we went to Court 17 - two hours before Hewitt was meant to come practice and it was lucky we went sooooooooooo early otherwise we wouldn't have been able to see him. It was so crowded and packed even an hour before Lleyton came but Lou and I got a really good spot. (shows how desperate we were to see Lleyton again!!!) Finally Lleyton came fashionably late and practised for only 20 minutes with Sebastian Grosjean) For some reason Guga came too but he left about a minute later withour hitting a ball. Lleyton signed a lot of things which was nice and he signed my book again!!! I was sooo happy but I still wasn't able to give him his pressie :-( I don't know how I can give it to him anymore but anyway, I got some great photos. When Lleyton had gone we ran to court 20 to get a good spot to see Andy and there was already a small crowd but not nearly as much as Lleyton's. :p Andy came on time signing people's books etc that they shoved in front of him but we didn't bother yet as we wanted to see him practise. He was playing good but he was wearing a hat instead of a visor. Anyway, after about 30 minutes he started signing stuff but he didn't come to our end. He was really nice, posing for photos etc but I also couldn't get him his pressie!! ARGH! So later we watched a bit of Carlos Moya and Juan practise and then went to buy tickets to the night session to see Andy play his first round. We rushed to Rod Laver Arena to see Lleyton's match but it was still only the beginning of Serena's but we decided to stay. Serena was playing alright but Emilie Loit was amazing. We all thought that Emilie was going to win and the crowds were cheering Loit on so hard because not many people like Serena and we wanted to see an upset. Serena won 3-6 7-6 7-5 but Emilie got the louder applause. Anyway, Lleyton's match started around 4.30 and the cheers for him were deafening!!!! :DThere was a small contingent of pretend Swedes chanting madly but we must have done the Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi thing at least a hundred times!!!! Lou and I waved our aussie flags madly on behalf of Lleytonland!!! The score showed a difficult match which it was but there was no doubt in anyone's mind that Lleyton would pull through. We were all getting behind him and every "c'mon" drew cheers left, right and centre!!! I took tonnes of photos which I'll show you guys soon. It was a great match!!

It was a great day altogether and I can’t wait to get back to Melbourne Park soon.

Its so nice to read reports from fans rather than the shit by some reporter who has a vendetta against LL. The press conviniently failed to mention the crowd support he had for his 1st match.

Mary Pierce is probably going to be playing on Center Court during ESPN's coverage! She's also playing against an American! If they don't show her match I'm going to be so pissed.

ALLEZ MARY! :D

This would be the first non-superstar American match. Xenophobia. Bah!

God I hate ESPN and ESPN2, such xenophobics. The other day they were going to show Serena and Lleyton's first round matches. Serena's of course ran long against Emilie(wanted her to beat Serena so bad) so then they say that they'll just show Lleyton's match the next day on the ESPN morning coverage. Do they, no! Arses. Their featuring his 2nd round Thurs night so it's all good, but still. Not liking the Lleyton shunning lol. They only show snippets of Lindsay, Kim, and Justine, honestly! lol ok my first post rant is officially over, so hey! :D

"I just want to say I think it's absolutely moronic to show taped coverage of tennis while there is plenty of great live action. Not only was the Serena Williams vs. Els Callens match boring, but you show EVERY MATCH of the Williams sisters. All we've seen on your terrible coverage are top American stars. Do you realize other people in the world play tennis? Do you realize how much people were looking forward to seeing Mary Pierce and Chanda Rubin play tonight? Do you think all tennis fans are stupid and can't type in a website address for live scores? Showing taped matches will NOT help your ratings. This is both insulting and pathetic. I for one hope that other networks carry the Australian Open next year, because your coverage is so xenophobic it's pathetic.

Also lol @ Els Callens, she did exactly the same as Anna K and served into the crowd instead of the court :o :p
