There is a big feature on Ll in Ace magazine today. Talks to is coach Peter Smith and has photos that I haven't seen before (including one awful one from when he was about 12).
It is very interesting, all the work he puts in etc. It talks about how his parents put a lot of pressure on him from a very young age, hey went to al his matches, videotaped him playing every six months to check his progress and never turned up to a conferene for tennis parents on not putting your kids under pressure!

Apparently he found it hard to physically hit the ball for the first 12 months of coaching but he kept working and then he got really good really quickly. He is obsessively neat (go into his room and you wouldn't think anyone was living there). I don't think there is an online version & i don't have a scanner but I cantype the interestign bits up if you want unless there is someone with a copy and a scanner.

For some bizarre reason, this song always makes me think of Lleyton and Kim.

"'03 Bonnie & Clyde"
Jay-Z feat. Beyonce Knowles

[talking]
Uhh uhh uhh.
You ready B? Let's go get 'em..

[Verse 1: Jay-Z]
Look for me! Young, B
Cruisin down the westside - high, way
Doing what we like to do - our, way
Eyes behind shades, this necklace the reason
all of my dates been blind dates
But today, I got my thoroughest girl wit me
I'm mashin the gas, she's grabbin the wheel, it's true to the heart
She rides with me - the new Bobby and Whitney
Only time we don't speak is during "Sex and the City"
She gets Carrie fever, but soon as the show is over
She's right back to being my soldier
Cuz mami's a rider, and I'm a roller
Put us together, how they gon' stop both us?
What ever she lacks, I'm right over her shoulder
When I'm off track mami is keepin me focused
So let's, lock this down like it's supposed to be
The '03 Bonnie and Clyde, Hov' and B

[Chorus]
[Jay] All I need in this life of sin, is me and my girlfriend.
[Bey] Down to ride 'til the very end, it's me and my boyfriend.
[Jay] All I need in this life of sin, is me and my girlfriend.
[Bey] Down to ride 'til the very end, it's me and my boyfriend.

[Verse 2: Jay-Z]
The problem is, you dudes treat the one that you lovin
with the same respect that you treat the one that you humpin
Now they 'bout nothin - if ever you mad about somethin
It won't be that; oh no it won't be that
I don't be at, places where we comfy at
With no be-atch; oh no you won't see that
And no, I ain't perfect - nobody walkin this earth's surface is
But girlfriend, work with the kid
I keep you workin' at Hermes, Birkin bag
Manolo Blahnik, Timbs, aviator lens
600 drops, Mercedes Benz
The only time you wear Burberry to swim
And I don't have to worry, only worry is him
She do anything necessary for him
And I do anything necessary for her
so don't let the necessary occur, yep!

[Beyonce]
(Talk to 'em B)
If I was your girlfried
I'll be there for you, if somebody hurts you
Even if it's somebody was me
Yeah-hee (break it down for 'em)
Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be
And so I put this on my life
Nobody or nothing will ever come between us
And I promise I'll give my life
and all of my trust if you was my boyfriend
Put this on my life
The air that I breathe in, all that I believe in
I promise I'll give my life
and all of my trust if you was my boyfriend

[Jay] All I need in this life of sin, is me and my girlfriend.
[Bey] Down to ride 'til the very end, it's me and my boyfriend.
[Jay] All I need in this life of sin, is me and my girlfriend.
[Bey] Down to ride 'til the very end, it's me and my boyfriend.

The N Sync version of The First Noel :D

[ALL] Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel...
Born is the king of Israel

[JC] The first Noel
The angels did say
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields where they lay
In fields where they
Lay keeping their sheep
On a cold winter's night that was so deep

[JC & ALL] Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel...
Born is the king of Israel

[JUSTIN] They look...ed up
And saw a star
Shining in the east beyond and far
And to the Earth
It gave great light
And so it continued both day and night

[JUSTIN & ALL] Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel...
Born is the king of Israel

[JC] ?Despite...the light...of that same star
Three wise men came from country far
[JUSTIN] To seek for the king was their intent
And to follow that star wherever it went

[JC &ALL] Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel...
Born is the king of Israel
Born is the king of Israel

So, wait, let me get this straight--you resent Eric's family? You resent that he has family obligations during the holidays? Or any other time? You resent the fact that he seemingly wants to go with his family members?

Wow, Scott. Sounds kind of selfish to me. Get some self esteem, buddy, and don't take it so personally. It's not about you.

Murkofan

Sorry your family sucks, Scott, but not everyone wants to be as far away from them as they can possibly get. Maybe Eric can stomach his family more than you can yours.

And you want to be talking to him all the time, eh? Surely someone as intelligent as yourself realizes that that is impossible. And to want to talk to one person all the time...I think you need to get some more friends or something.

But my point was basically this--gosh, you're being mighty selfish, and rather petulant to boot. The world doesn't revolve around Scott and Scott's needs. Eric has other responsibilties in the Real World, and I think you need to be a little more understanding and respectful. In a few weeks you'll be seeing him Live and In Person. I'm pretty sure you can survive that long, but if you can't, that's pretty darn sad.

To backtrack a bit, what is it with you people and your families? How horrible are they? My Mom and Dad are freaking awesome parents, and good, decent, hard-working, respected people in addition to that. My sister isn't half bad either. Regardless of Eric or not being Steel Magnolias or whatever issue we're discussing, you people who are so unhappy with your life, for whatever reason, have my pity. You're in my prayers.

I'm not going to do that. A spade is a spade, and I call 'em as I see 'em, whether you or anyone else considers it to be to my detriment or not. While I appreciate your esteemed advice, quite frankly, I don't care what anyone thinks of me. There are few people in the world whom I really love, and even less that I think well of. She's right, of course I'm going to sympathize with you :D You're my friend and I luv ya  Unless you'd commit a crime or something, then I don't think I'd be able to be on your side lol... Ok so this whole Eric thing... ok well I don't think you're being selfish, i just think it's normal... all my friends ( but not me ;) :( ) have boyfriends and every night they call each other and want to spend as much time with each other as possible... so rather than think all of you are abnormal, I'll just go with the probably right answer and say that it's all part of being in love... I just wouldn't take it too personally ( i know, it's hard) but just think that he might be close with his family and that when he's asked to spend time with them, he doesn't mind, even though you and I might :o But don't worry, he loves you :D

Here's the article from ESPN.com, btw:

Braves GM says bad economics led to trade

The Philadelphia Phillies acquired right-hander Kevin Millwood from the Atlanta Braves for catcher Johnny Estrada on Friday.

The Braves, who already lost Tom Glavine to the New York Mets, had an excess of starting pitching after retaining four-time NL Cy Young award winner Greg Maddux, and acquiring Russ Ortiz and Paul Byrd earlier this week. Atlanta also traded for left-hander Mike Hampton last month.

"It's a shock,'' Millwood said. "But I'm excited to be going to a team that wants to win.''

The Phillies had missed out on their top two pitching choices this offseason. Glavine, a two-time NL Cy Young award winner, decided to sign with the Mets and Jamie Moyer chose to stay in Seattle.

Braves general manager John Schuerholz explained the move, telling ESPN's Karl Ravech that this wasn't a baseball trade, but rather a trade fostered by the economics of baseball.

"With Kevin's arbitration number projected to be $10 million this season and with Greg Maddux accepting arbitration we were $15 million over budget," Schuerholz told ESPN. "The economics in baseball stink. The economics stink, and if this isn't a clear enough signal to the doubters and naysayers, to be forced to trade an 18-game winner to your arch enemy ... The economics stink."

Even so, some might question why the Braves would trade Millwood to a team within their own division.

"I tried. No one was willing to take the $10 million this season," Schuerholz told Ravech. "Only one team (wanted to), and it was the team he was ultimately traded to. As late as 15 minutes before the deal was finalized, I was on the phone and not one team was willing to move."

Philadelphia has already upgraded its offense by signing free-agent first baseman Jim Thome and third baseman David Bell.

Millwood was 18-8 with a 3.24 ERA last season, helping the Braves win an unprecedented 11th straight division title. It was his best season since 1999, when he was 18-7 with a 2.68 ERA and finished third in the NL Cy Young voting.

Millwood, who turns 28 on Tuesday, made $3.9 million last season in the final year of his contract. He is eligible for salary arbitration, and the Braves are trying to trim their payroll.

Estrada, 26, spent almost all of last season at Triple-A Scranton Wilkes Barre. He hit .279 with 11 homers and 67 RBI.

Estrada was the Phillies' regular catcher in 2001 after Mike Lieberthal went down with a season-ending knee injury in May. He batted .228 with eight homers and 37 RBI in 89 games that season.

The Braves also have catcher Javy Lopez under contract for $7 million next season, and backup Henry Blanco. Lopez hit .233 with 11 homers and 52 RBI last season. Schuerholz said Lopez will enter spring training as the team's starting catcher.

"He's the total package,'' Schuerholz said of Estrada. "He's a good receiver, has a good arm and handles a pitching staff real well. He's got a good bat. We've sort of had him on our radar screen for a couple of years. It wasn't a knee-jerk reaction.''

Millwood gives the Phillies the pitcher they've been seeking since trading Curt Schilling to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2000. He joins left-hander Randy Wolf (11-9, 3.20 ERA) and All-Star right-hander Vicente Padilla (14-11, 3.28 ERA) at the top of the rotation.

Right-handers Brandon Duckworth, who struggled in his first full season, and Brett Myers, who pitched well as a rookie in 12 starts, will likely be the Nos. 4 and 5 starters.

"He had electric stuff last year,'' Phillies manager Larry Bowa said of Millwood. "He had the best stuff on that staff.''

Millwood won 17 games in his first full season in 1998, before his breakout year in '99. But he struggled in 2000, going 10-13 with a 4.66 ERA. In 2001, he missed two months with a right shoulder injury, and finished 7-7 with a 4.31 ERA.

But he was back to his old self last season.

Millwood won eight straight starts at one point, 15 of 16, and was 16-3 with a 2.64 ERA in his final 25 starts. He beat the San Francisco Giants in Game 2 of the NL division playoffs, but lost the deciding Game 5, despite allowing just two runs.

Millwood is 75-46 with a 3.73 ERA lifetime, and is 3-3 with one save and a 3.20 ERA in nine playoff appearances.

The departure of Millwood means the Braves will enter next season without three-fifths of a starting rotation that helped them win 101 games. Only Maddux and Jason Marquis return.

Millwood, Glavine and Damian Moss -- traded to San Francisco for Ortiz -- were a combined 48-25 with a 3.19 ERA last season. Hampton, Ortiz and Byrd -- a free-agent signing from Kansas City -- were a combined 38-36 with a 4.45 ERA.

"We went out and did the things we did involving our pitching staff because No. 1 there was the uncertainty about Greg Maddux returning to us,'' Schuerholz said.

"Even though we offered him arbitration. We didn't know what he would do. We tried to get him to agree to a long term contract, but didn't do that. We saw Mike Remlinger leave, Chris Hammond leave, Tom Glavine leave. We saw our pitching staff falling apart before our eyes. We had to make quick and aggressive moves. That's why we made the Hampton deal, the Ortiz deal, signed Paul Byrd.''

Face facts: Schuerholz blew it

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Rob Neyer
ESPN.com

The question of the day is:

What does John Schuerholz know, that we don't?

And the answer is:

Very little, at least when it comes to Kevin Millwood and Johnny Estrada.

So what the hell happened?

The only thing that makes sense is that Greg Maddux blind-sided Schuerholz.

Today Schuerholz said, "With Kevin's arbitration number projected to be $10 million this season and with Greg Maddux accepting arbitration we were $15 million over budget." Not coincidentally, Maddux figures to make somewhere in the neighborhood of $15 million next season, which means Schuerholz had the payroll in working order before Maddux accepted arbitration, which means Schuerholz didn't think that Maddux would accept arbitration.

But Maddux did accept arbitration. Now, you can argue that Maddux should have made his intentions clear a couple of weeks ago, which would have made things easier for Schuerholz and the good baseball fans of Georgia and points north and west. But Maddux was simply taking care of himself, presumably hoping that somebody came up with a multi-year contract to his liking. Nobody did, so he'll take his $15 million and spend another season with Leo Mazzone. Hard to argue with that.

No, the problem is that Schuerholz screwed up. Yes, he was put in a tough spot, but he sort of put himself there. If the Braves didn't want to pay Maddux $15 million, they didn't have to offer him arbitration. If they did want to pay him $15 million and they thought there was even a chance he'd accept, then they should have spent the last week telling people that Millwood might be available. And then, when all that failed, they should have simply released Millwood. Because (as Joe Sheehan points out), the benefit of having Estrada is more than outweighed by even the chance that some team other than the Phillies would have signed Millwood.

And why did the Braves trade Millwood on Friday? Millwood's a valuable property, and you can't help but think that if Schuerholz had waited -- until January, or February, or even March -- he could have gotten more than a backup catcher for an 18-game winner.

This is just a guess -- we'll eventually know the whole story -- but I think that when Maddux surprised the Braves by accepting arbitration, somebody at AOL-Time Warner said to Schuerholz, "Whoa there, big fella. You're $15 million over your 2003 budget, and you need to get a lot closer to your 2003 budget before 2003."

Baseball executives will be hard to reach for the next couple of weeks, so apparently Schuerholz figured if was going to make a deal, he had to make it now. And there may even be a bit of petulance working here, too. "You want me to trade Millwood? Fine, I'll trade him. Today. To the Phillies. For somebody you never heard of. Happy now?"

See, the problem is that Millwood is the Braves' best pitcher. Let's look at the Braves' three best starters last season, sans the ERA column:

W- L IP HR K BR/IP
Tom 18-11 225 21 127 1.28
Greg 16- 6 199 14 118 1.20
Kevin 18- 8 217 16 178 1.16

It's true that Glavine (2.96) and Maddux (2.62) both posted lower ERA's than Millwood (3.24), and ERA does count. But you add everything up, and Millwood pitched exactly as well as Glavine and Maddux.

And that was last year. Next year, Millwood is likely to out-pitch both of his ex-teammates, because 1) he's significantly younger, and 2) he's got significantly better stuff. You don't believe me? Just wait and see. And those of you who play in Rotisserie leagues will find that Millwood is significantly more popular than Glavine or Maddux in your drafts next spring.

I don't know if this has ever happened before. I don't know if a division-winning team has, in the following offseason, traded its best pitcher to its top rival.

And who's to blame? Not the man in charge. As Schuerholz told ESPN, "The economics in baseball stink. The economics stink, and if this isn't a clear enough signal to the doubters and naysayers, to be forced to trade an 18-game winner to your arch enemy ... The economics stink."

Schuerholz is frustrated today, so we should probably cut him a little slack. Once he simmers down a bit, he'll probably admit that the "economics of baseball" have been a great help to the Braves for quite some time, and they're still a great help.

It's also worth noting, I think, that the "economics of baseball" didn't force the Braves to commit $11.5 million on Vinny Castilla and Javier Lopez -- two guys who can't really hit -- in 2003. Give Schuerholz that $11.5 million back, and he could have had the best rotation in the league and $1.5 million for a better third baseman than the one he's got.

Schuerholz is right, though: something sure does stink.

The Tennessee Lady Volunteers are playing the Texas Longhorns. I'm so torn over who to support.

The Lady Vols have been my favorite team since I was 12, but my favorite player (Kristin "Ace" Clement; I met her 2 years ago and she autographed my replica jersey :D) graduated a couple years ago and I haven't made that personal connection to any of the newer players. And of course, I've always loved the Lady Longhorns, as they're the Longhorns (as opposed to the Aggies, yuck) and they're from Texas, and I know lots of their players from the Girls' High School State Basketball Championships tournament in Austin that my family and I go to every March....

Aw, screw it.

Mt. Union wins third straight D-III title

SALEM, Va. (AP) -- His uniform dirty and eye black fading, Dan Pugh looked nothing like a running back who had carried the ball a record 49 times in leading Mount Union to a 48-7 victory in a national championship game.

"This definitely completes the picture," Pugh said after gaining 253 yards, scoring four touchdowns and setting a slew of records to carry the Purple Raiders past Trinity in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl on Saturday.

"This is what we came to do."

The Division III title was the third in a row for Mount Union (14-0) and its seventh in 10 years. It also was the 96th victory in 97 games for the Purple Raiders, but coach Larry Kehres prefers not to hear talk that his team is a dynasty, or college football's version of the New York Yankees.

"I think that word actually bristles some of us a little bit," Kehres said. "And I don't like the Yankees. I'm an Indians fan."

After winning the last two titles by three points each, the Purple Raiders made this game look too easy. They took a 28-0 halftime lead as Pugh ran for two touchdowns and Rob Adamson threw for two.

Trinity (14-1) played without suspended quarterback Roy Hampton, who was arrested last week for public intoxication. The Tigers struggled to get their offense going, and they finished with 203 yards, 337 below their average.

Trinity coach Steve Mohr rebuffed a question about whether the outcome might have been different with Hampton, who threw for 43 touchdowns, in the lineup, but Kehres thought Hampton's absence really hurt the Tigers.

"It was a very difficult thing for Trinity to play without him," Kehres said. "I really respect Coach Mohr for the way he was able to handle it, but no team can, on short notice, deal with a problem like that."

Nor could the Tigers deal with Pugh.

He set Stagg Bowl records with his 49 carries and scored on runs of 19, 2, 1 and 1 yards, tying another record. The third touchdown was his 40th of the season, breaking Barry Sanders' all-divisions record of 39 set at Oklahoma State in 1988. Pugh finished with a record 15 postseason TDs.

"He's not your typical Division III running back," Mohr said. "Some of the cuts he made didn't do what we watched on film any justice."

Pugh also set a Division III record for all-purpose yards in a season with 3,192, breaking Dante Brown of Marietta's record of 2,973, set in 1996. Only Sanders, with 3,250 yards for the Cowboys in 1988, had more.

Sanders set both records in 11 games, while a new NCAA rule allowed Pugh to count his numbers from four postseason games toward his totals.

Adamson also hurt the Tigers, going 12-of-23 for 222 yards and three touchdowns, all with the wind at his back. He teamed with Derrick Leach for TDs of 19 and 55 yards and Randell Knapp for 9 yards.

"That's the toughest wind I've ever play in," Adamson said.

The Purple Raiders' defense also did its part, holding the Tigers to 11 first downs and their lowest point total. They were averaging 47.

"I think they have as good a defense as we've played all year," said Tigers running back Jeremy Boyce, who gained 93 yards on 15 carries. "I guess their offense and their running game kind of overshadows it."

Or, on the Mount Union side, helps make the defense succeed.

"It's great to play defense when you've got a guy like Dan running the ball and Rob throwing it," Mount Union defensive end Matt Campbell said. "It takes a lot of pressure off and gives you a lot of time to rest."

Trinity, making its first appearance in the Stagg Bowl, gave Dan DesPlaines the start in place of Hampton, and he predictably struggled, getting his first pass intercepted at the Trinity 24, setting up a TD.

DesPlaines did connect with B.J. Smith from 18 yards out to make it 28-7 in the third quarter, but finished just 9-of-18 for 86 yards.

"If you can grow up in one day, I guess this was it," he said.

Trinity is a private Baptist college in San Antonio. My friend Jenny's brother, and my friend Tami's boyfried, Joey, plays for 'em. I was hoping the Tigers could pull off a MASSIVE upset, but no dice. :p

The eyyyyyyye's of Texas are uponnnnnn youuuuuuu.......:D

Norman's three-pointer proves to be game-winner

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Freshman Nina Norman hit a 3-pointer with 1 second left to give Texas (No. 21 ESPN/USA Today, No. 22 AP) a 63-62 upset of No. 4 Tennessee on Saturday.

The wins tightens the race to 800 career victories between Longhorns coach Jody Conradt and the Lady Vols' Pat Summitt. (I know them. :D)

Norman's 3-pointer gave Texas (6-2) a 63-60 lead, but the Longhorns were hit with a technical foul when they ran onto the court in celebration thinking time had expired.

Tennessee (8-2) cut it to one when Kara Lawson hit two free throws, but the Lady Vols couldn't get one last shot off on a cross-court inbounds pass as time expired.

Heather Schreiber scored 18 points for Texas. Her three-pointer with 1 minute left tied it at 60. Lawson had 24 points for Tennessee.

Summitt and Conradt rank 1-2 in career wins in a coaching rivalry that dates back nearly 30 years. Summitt, the winningest coach in women's basketball, is 796-160 in 29 years. Conradt is 794-260 in 34 seasons. They started the season tied at 788.

Stacy Stephens scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Texas, and Tai Dillard added 10 points. (I know them too. :D)

Tasha Butts had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Tennessee in a game which saw eight lead changes in the second half. Tennessee held the biggest lead at 7-0.

Lawson hit six 3-pointers, and her last gave Tennessee a 60-57 lead with 1:30 to play. Texas answered when Schreiber connected from the top of the arc.

Norman, who is in the starting lineup because Jamie Carey is out with mononucleosis, grabbed the rebound off a Tennessee miss and ended up with the ball in the final seconds for the last shot.

Among active coaches for men and women's Division I basketball, Summitt ranks second only to Mount St. Mary's Jim Phelan (823). Conradt is tied for third with Texas Tech coach Bob Knight. Former North Carolina coach Dean Smith set the standard with 879.

Summitt has won six national titles, Conradt one. The Longhorns were the first undefeated national champions in 1986.

Texas had fallen to an also-ran during the 1990s until Conradt decided last year to give up her duties as the Texas women's athletic director and devote all her time to coaching.

The move worked as she took the Longhorns back to the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1990 and beat Tennessee in Knoxville to end a 13-game losing streak to Summitt.

Texas led 35-33 at halftime on the strength of 5-of-6 3-pointers as Tennessee dropped double- and triple-teams under the basket to defend Stephens. Kala Bowers' shot from the left corner with 24 seconds left gave the Longhorns the lead going into the locker room.

Schreiber had 13 points by halftime, but spent most of the last five minutes of the first half on the bench with two fouls.

With Tennessee forced to defend the perimeter, Stephens came up big in the second with four key points that kept Texas in the lead late in the game.

Lawson did what she could to carry Tennessee, scoring the Lady Vols' final 10 points, including the 3-pointer that gave them a late lead.

It's so great to see Texas back in the thick of things. :D :bounce:

*tries to think of something interesting to contribute*

Me, my sister, and LG are going to my maternal grandmother's for Christmas tomorrow. All 9 of LG's brothers and sisters and their families are going to be there. A couple of LG's brothers and sisters that live hours away in East and North Texas came down early and have been at my grandmother's all day. LG was affectionately irritated, as she always is, that the party had started without her, and she was calling them constantly to see what they were up to. :p

Then, we we're done with Christmas, the three of us and my sister's fiance and his mother are going to a Neil Diamond concert in San Antonio. :D :p So we'll be busy tomorrow. *Preemptive yawn*

An LSU player got the rebound and was heading out of bounds, so he called timeout. Problem being, LSU didn't have any timeouts. So they got a technical, and Arizona sank two free throws to cut the lead to 3. Then as LSU was inbounding the ball, they threw it away, and Arizona made a basket to cut the lead to 1.

LSU just got the ball down the court, but gave it away again. Arizona called a timeout, so they'll be inbounding the ball at halfcourt down 65-66 with 13.5 seconds left.

An Arizona guard was trying to penetrate, either to drive to the basket for a layup or kick it out for a jump shot, but got stripped. He and an LSU player got into a little tussle for it on the floor. The LSU player knocked it out of bounds on the baseline with .5 seconds left. As Arizona tried to inbound it, the LSU guy on the ball batted it, and time expired. LSU has upset the #1, formerly undefeated Arizona Wildcats 66-65.

And just for the record, I loooooove Louisiana accents. :D

Yeah, we do do a lot of hunting. I've never been hunting myself (my sister and her fiance keep trying to get me to go with them, but I'm always busy with the paper when they ask me) but I'm not a bad shot. Some of those shotguns, though--woo boy! They'll knock you back on your ass if you're not ready for it. Big kick.

My sister has a killed a lot of pigs and deer. She didn't hunt before she met her fiance.
