Kim Gevaert wint Vlaamse Reus 06/12/02

That review is really well written, I like it :D
Hot Hot Heat
Knock Knock Knock EP
[Sub Pop; 2002]
Rating: 6.7
Typing, typing, typing:

"Knock Knock Knock."

"Who's there?"

"Hot Hot Heat...?"

No.

"Who's there?"

"Obvious, hackneyed music review introduction...?"

That was at least truthful. Our Hero sighed and watched bleary-eyed as the cursor annihilated one of the most inane leads he had ever felt compelled to commit to the page. Of course, it probably didn't help that he also felt compelled to write only while hammered on Diet Captain Cokes, but the way he saw it, Hemmingway was a great writer, and alcohol had solved all of his problems (except for that last one, but whatever).

Sitting imprisoned at the computer keyboard, Our Hero was all out of options. He had already married all the pens and pencils in his desk drawer (they had been living in sin for years-- it was for the best), and fogging his glasses with compressed air had begun to lose its K-thru-6 charm. Plus, he was out of canned air. No, the truth of the matter loomed as large a litigant in the class-action suit against the grease-peddlers of America: he had to find some way to write about the debut EP from the Canadian foursome Hot Hot Heat. He needed to buy some time-- it was time to listen to the CD again, but that would only get him sixteen minutes, so he needed to think faster than he had ever thought before.

Momentarily blinded by the hot hot pink Knock Knock Knock, he placed the disc into his Hello Kitty! CD player, and waited to be inspired. Instead, all he got from the opening track, "Le Le Low," was Steve Bays' voice reminding him why he'd started drinking to write this review in the first place. Normally, Our Hero would be reluctant to to say that someone was a "bad singer," but god help him, this guy sang like he was swallowing his tongue. He poured another drink and jotted a few notes:

"Vocal delivery has three modes: gurgling, gasping, or atonal wailing. None pleasant."

"Reminds me of a pre-pubescent Robert Smith. Sometimes."

By the third track-- and this may just have been the Captain talking-- Our Hero started to realize that, aural root canal or not, the singing was just maddening enough to work with the danceable abandon Hot Hot Heat so desperately tried to get across. It was crazy, but in a calculated sort of way. Once he "got into the groove" of Heat's compulsively rhythmic strangeness it became far more palatable. Even as he warmed to the vocals, however, the review remained unwritten, and time was running out.

The unique blend of salsa-flavored percussive elements that propelled "Sleep" faded out with piano keys twinkling, leading directly to a storm of hand-clapping and foot-stomping, ushering in the morse-code attack of Dante DeCaro's rapid fire guitar in "Touch You Touch You." He had to give the band credit; the instrumentation was tight and inventive throughout the EP, and latin-tinged tension of "Touch You" was the high water mark. Our Hero slowly took in the keyboard effects (ridiculously old-school lasergun tweets-- laughable, but entertaining as hell) and jittery piano through an alcohol-addled haze; the monitor stared at him, and he stared back equally blankly. At least the vocals on this one had been contained somewhat and were far more believably emotive than before; a nice change of pace.

Finally, as the ebullient guitar work and faint, but appreciated, harmonies of "More for Show" burst forth from the speakers where the Hello Kitty's mouth ought to have been, Our Hero was inspired. It might have had something to do with the fact that this closing piece was an unexpected blast of blue skies and optimism from an EP that had thus far been nervous, but with a sinister swing (the same sort of vibe as "Hell," by the Squirrel Nut Zippers), or maybe it was the lines of cocaine. Either way, he was fired up to write; it would be an ill-conceived, pretentious, and self-referential narrative about the difficulties of music reviewing! And it was all thanks to Hot Hot Heat's surprising new EP. Their blending of vaguely Latin percussion (Hawley's drum work was easily the standout of the album), a hint of post-punk guitar-grinding, and truly insane vocals had grown on him like a not-so-bad fungus. Our Hero was thrilled, until he realized the second obstacle that confronted him: he had no conceivable way to end the review.

I'm so tired!

So my professor emailed me and told me that our third test and the research paper has been combined. He picked a topic - it's on our readings, a comparison of Emerson and Thoreau. It's good because now I don't have to think of a topic and do any research. But, it's going to be hard to write about because it's actually a rather boring topic. Anyway, it should save me some time.

You know the way we watch LL's scores online and get incredible frustrated etc? Well he feels our pain, sortof. Quote:

'But he said his opportunities to use his new ticket to watch the Crows live would be extremely limited, although he follows the team avidly via the internet and videotapes.

"Every match I'm on the internet watching the scores tick over but it's frustrating when you've just got the scores ticking over and you're not quite sure what's happening," he said.'

I can certainly empathise with that. A pity he would not think of his long suffering fans and close out his matches in straights rather than mysteriously losing sets for no acceptable reason!
;)

He is now the Crow's no.1 ticket holder and patron. We should start a poll for who deserves to be Lleyton's number one fan.
Nominations please...Angele?

This place has been awfully quiet, but than again, the off season has been really quiet. Lleyton and Kim don't even play any exhibition matches. I am sure we will be all here in full force once the Hopman Cup rolls around though.

For now, I am just realy busy with work and getting ready for my Christmas vacation. Two weeks in Belgium. :bounce: :bounce:

My fingernails are nice and long....And I got my hair cut on Saturday! :D It'd been 6 weeks since the last time I'd gotten it cut  :o and it was getting a bit shaggy. Looks good now, though. ;)

And errrr, whilst I was in San Antonio, I bought the Chamber of Secrets soundtrack, which is REALLY good. John Williams is the master. And LG has discovered Online shopping ("Mo-Mo, did you know you could do this?!" "Yes, LG, I've bought stuff Online before." "*gasp*You HAVE??" "Yes LG." "You are so smart.") and has, according to my sister, gone hog-wild on Christmas gifts for me. I only had about 8 things on my list, so I don't know what she's buying. LG has excellent taste, though. ;)

LOL yes, we do cook food here! ;) I don't know what you tried, but in general I've noticed that you CANNOT get half-decent Asian food in Australia unless you go to the super expensive specialty restaurants.

Scotso
12-09-2002, 05:24 PM
Well we have awesome Chinese food here in Virginia. Not sure about elsewhere. Thai, Brazilian... everything in Massachusetts I've tried is good. (College towns usually have good food.) But that Malaysian food I had was so gross! It wasn't cooked, but I didn't want to complain. Maybe they just forgot to cook it? Or maybe I ordered the one thing I shouldn't have.

I guess I'll try it again sometime. I like "exotic" food and I guess I just pointed to the wrong thing.

Scotso

Indian pancakes? I LOOOOOVE those!

If I am not mistaken, what you are referring to is called 'roti canai' here (roti is 'bread' in both Malay and Hindi). Did you dip them in curry?

Have you seen how they are made? It's a fantastic show on it's own...

Angele
12-09-2002, 07:50 PM
I've only written a few exams :o In 7th grade, I was exempt from all my year end exams so I only wrote the mid-year exams ( which you could not exempt) and the year after they re-vamped the whole exam system ; only grades 10 and up had exams and nobody can exempt. But needless to say the exams in grade 7 weren't very hard ;) I assume the ones this year won't quite be the same story

Angele

Marly did you see the new Lleyki pic? Maybe that would cheer you up a bit :) ;) :p

Murkofan
12-09-2002, 07:55 PM
It's not 3 teachers, it's 1 teacher that I have 3 times a day. :p Pay attention. :p

At least I have Kyla in 2 of the classes, and Casey in another. But my other class with this teacher is just horrible. It's full of a bunch of dumb (and no, I'm not being mean or exaggerating) people who happen to think they're really witty and cute. You know the kind--loud, annoying, overbearing.....blah. And I get a hour hour and half with them as opposed to the usual forty five minutes of torture. I guess I'll just do what I do every day and put my headphones on and ignore 'em. :p I love being the teacher's pet and getting do do illegal things, like listen to my CD player at school and get excused from exams the rest of the school has to take. :D

And yeah, exams here aren't hard either, at least not for me. I'm just annoyed at having to be up here for that hour and a half when I could be at home. Oh, and my college Government professor told us our final on Wednesday is going to be open book. I think he knows I'm one of the two resident brainiacs of my grade, because he stared at me and said, "I'm sorry to disappoint those of you who were looking forward to a closed book exam," and the rest of the class laughed. I didn't know I was so easy to read. :o :p

LoL I'm sorry but this is hilarious! Oh my god The Aussies are playing on clay against the Brits! :D Oh Fitzy he is such a funky guy :D

History will be made in Sydney when Australia plays a home tie on clay for the first time ever in the Davis Cup, against historic sporting rival Great Britain. A temporary clay court will be laid over the Rebound Ace surface on the centre court at the Sydney International Tennis Centre (Homebush), venue of the 2000 Olympic Tennis Event.

"Clay is the best option for us to play on if we are to defeat the likes of Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski," said Australian Davis Cup Captain John Fitzgerald. "You can guarantee our choice of clay won't be popular with the Brits."

Ana :wavey:

Well Tim and Greg suck on clay :p :D

Static
12-09-2002, 08:44 PM
... but Australia has Wayne Arthurs and Lleyton... I'll just say that it's not exactly their best surface either. Although thinking about Lleyton, on hard courts or rebound ace their is a chance he might get his arse kicked by Greg (yeah he has that once in a while) and battle of serve and volleyers with Tim and Wayne... is going to be interesting (on clay ??? ) or Greg and Wayne for that matter. But CLAY that's just soooo iffy! I mean I know Lleyton can play on it (sometimes)... but Wayne.... to me it's just too iffy... I mean Fitzy is relying on the fact that they will win the doubles but if Wayne and Woody are not on... then they are screwed. Woody and clay not always mix either... so we'll see... I guess I would have chosen indoors carpet...
