Okay, semicolons versus colons. I'll do my best.
A semicolon is usually interchangeable with a double dash and separates two independent clauses. Ex:
I don't know much about her; we've never really been friends
or
Katie didn't go to school today; she felt absolutely awful.
Oh, and an independent clause is something that could stand alone as a sentence.

A colon is used to list things or to emphasize a certain word. Ex:
I had all the items necessary to enjoy nature: a flashlight, mosquito repellant, and hiking boots.
or
She had given me the worst grade I had ever gotten: a B.

I find in my own experiences that colons aren't really used very often in formal writing. Semicolons are, but as I mentioned, you can avoid overusing them by substituting a double dash:
I absolutely can't go out today--it's only ten degrees outside!

Good question! I don't really know that too! In my newspaper they said that he earned 1,4 million, but today I've read the newspaper off my grandmum and there they said he could have won 1,4 million iff he had won all his matches, but he lost against Moya, so he won 700,000 :confused:
