today is episode 3549 in Belgium...:p
They don't dub it, they never dub any programs, except maybe a couple of kidsprorams, but certainly not all. But in Wallonia they dub almost everything, sometimes even Flemmish interviews or programs.

I'm having a great time, I'm reading the complete 'We wanna see Lleyton and Kim on a camel thread' GREAT!!

Cool... Angele's French station airs the Simpsons dubbed in French (amongst other things :p ) I'd like to see foreign-dubbed versions of some shows I know well in English, someday, out of interest. I'd be so curious to see if the jokes in the Simpsons come through in German, or Hindi.

:wavey: BBB, what are you doing here? I hate you for not having to go to school. :p

Anyways, just popping in for a quick hello. I'll respond to all of Scott's political posts this afternoon, when I'm 1) not in such a hurry, and 2) not so annoyed. I will say that I have never been ashamed to be an American. Ashamed of some of the things that have happened, yes, but not to be an American. The only thing I think is shameful is that, like Scott said, not everyone has all the rights that we at least think they should. Oh, and the fact that two of my fellow citizens would be ashamed of our country because the election didn't go their way. If it really truly bothers you that much, leave. Ain't nobody nowhere stopping you. Or just wait two years for the next election. ;)

I'm going to abstain from commenting on the MC draw until it's official. In ranking news, it looks like it'll take a semifinal appearance for Kim to move past Amelie, but it still probably won't move her past Ezel, unless Ezel loses today.
However, if Kim wins today, I think she out to finish where she is or even higher, if she wins again. Monica has Lindsay and then Venus--she isn't going to earn more points than Kim, I don't think. I'll be very surprised if she even wins her first match. Dani is in Serena's quarter, right? Nuff said. And Dokic won't get past the semi. So Kim is in pretty good shape if she wins today and excellent shape if she wins today and Friday.

If you will kindly note the time I think that will put my emotions in context. Or else we will just have to agree to disagree.

As for elections . . . if, indeed, my governor's race goes the way of the Republican candidate, I will be applying for residency in another state. The Republican candidate is a complete asshole--and yes, he has been one to my face, not to mention in the race this year. I have nothing against Republicans in general, in fact I even voted for a few, but this guy really turns my stomach.

It frightens me that all 3 powers on DC are in control of one political party. This means there is no real way to check whatever the Republicans decide they want to do. I'd feel the same way if it was completely Democrat-controlled.

What state/Republican candidate are you talking about? I don't know much about any of the gubernatorial candidates other than the ones in Texas. I'm so glad Tony Sanchez didn't win. What an idiot.

I know where you're coming from when you say the thought of all 3 being controlled by one party. The way I look at it, though, is at least SOMETHING will be getting done. Whether the things that come of it will be good or bad remains to be seen. But at least things won't get tied up in legislation just because the Democrats don't want to pass something because the Republicans are for it, and vice versa. It's all just been a big pissing match in D.C. before this anyways.

Scott, have you ever taken a History class?

Look at how long it took for women to get the right to vote, and for blacks to have equal rights. Gays WILL have equal rights eventually, but it will take time, like it or not. You can't expect people to change their minds and their perceptions overnight. If I could, I would wave a magic wand and give you everything you want and deserve, but I can't. You shouldn't have to wait, but you do, so you'll just have to deal with it.

But I'm serious when I say that if you don't think you're getting what's yours here that you should leave. Go somewhere where you have the rights you want and won't worry so much about being openly gay. OR, stay here and fight for your rights and spread the word and try to make our country better for EVERYONE. Put up or shut up.

There was an artical about Kim today in the newspaper :D, Kim said that she isn't superstitous, but she believes that there must be for everything a reason! By example: the reason that Lleyton lost in the semies off the Us Open is 11/9/2001, there must be 2 Americans in the final!;)

Kim said she was a fataliste (is that a word?), everything happens for a reason. She also gave the example of playing doubles with Ezel: THEY MAY NOT PLAY DOUBLES, bec there's always something: Ezel already chose another partner, Kim injured in Antwerp, and finally, Ezel stepping on her own fingers @Stanford....:D

The night sessions with Davenport, Seles, and the Williams sisters will probably be packed.
Wednesday in the middle of the afternoon in November to watch first round matches between players not huge in the US--not really going to happen. I mean, yeah, it's LA, but people still work! And those tickets are expensive! I remember my tickets to a first round night session at MSG cost something like 400 dollars each!
Still, there ought to be SOME people there...maybe they're just sort of filing in late and will be there by the time Kim plays.

Well it would've been if LL HAD won Paris, but now I think he needs to win 3 matches. The only way DH can win is if LL totally bombs out and he basically has to win it really.

Yeah, they were the seats that are usually bought out by big shot executives who have no interest in tennis. I really owe my daddy for those...
40 dollars at a tournament like this one, imo, would maybe get you seats all the way up in the balcony. If you want to be able to see the players without binoculars, I'd guess you'd be looking at at least 90.
Remember, this is a 3 million dollar event! They have to get the prize money from SOMEWHERE!

Well, come on, you're also talking about NYC here. Everything there (and in Cali, too) is outrageously expensive.

Now, if the Championships were being held in Texas, you could probably get great seats for about half of what Jilli paid. (The cost of living is pretty low compared to NY and Cali; we're poor here.) Actually, you could probably get good seats for less than $200, as tennis isn't football. :p

pinkie
11-06-2002, 09:49 PM
Hey all!

$400 is impressive. I paid about $80 for the US-Open women's semi-finals this year. The seats weren't that great though. Next year, I want to go the the Philly tournament. That's not far from here and it shouldn;t be that expensive.:)

Uh Oh. Kim just gave up a break.

Well, no, Marly, not necessarily. As I said before, they get most of the prize money from ticket revenue, so by having a pot of 3 million, their tickets have to be pretty damn expensive, no matter where the event is held. But it might be slightly cheaper if it weren't in a big city--of course, that might defeat some of the purpose.

You're being very cold. And you're showing that you don't know people well. It's nice that you would like me to leave. It's really my only option. It's all well and good for you to say that I should fight for my rights... especially considering that it's a common thing here for gay people to get beaten and murdered. Whoa, Marly, it is? How...odd. Okayyyyyy....
I won't go, though, as I think I can only afford one big event a year, and I live fifteen minutes from the US Open.
Well, maybe if the championships stay in the US, Lleyton and Kim will be able to go to the other's tournament. Man, I have a one-track mind.

If you say so. I consider it practical, as you yourself admitted that it's your only option.

You're right when you say I don't understand what it's like, but I have a better idea than you think I do. You forget I live in Texas, where black men are dragged to their death behind trucks, where there are towns with signs at the city limits saying "Any niggers in town will be lynched," and where, as you pointed out, gay people get beaten and murdered. I watched my cousin John as he came out to our family of beer guzzling, red-neck uncles and tried desperately to be accpeted by them, and by his friends, and by his colleagues and the parents of the high school students he teaches. I may not be gay or black, but I know what people who are go through.

My point being, if you're unsatisfied with a situation and do nothing to try and change it, you don't, in my opinion, have any room to gripe, possible dangers notwithstanding.

Scotso
11-06-2002, 10:17 PM
I have tried to change it... but most people who even support gay rights, like yourself, continue to vote for people who don't.

Hey, Scott

I agree with marly in the sense that it is important that you stay and fight for your rights. Things will change for the better, but it will require a long battle. Two years ago, Ellen coming out was enough to get her show cancelled. Now Will & Grace is on prime time tv every week. But you have to keep standing up for your rights; unfortunately no one else will.

In the meanwhile, it is difficult to understand for most straight, white people how tough everyday life is if you are gay. Most straight people don't know about the dangers, injustice and discrimination. I know some of it because some of my best friends are gay. But most other people just don't know. Unfortunately, it will be mostly up to you to do the educating.

In the end, it will al pay off though. I promise. If not, just come and get married in Belgium :)

Kim?! Australian accent?! Have you never heard her speak?!

yep, but I don't know that, in Belgium we only learn British English. I don't hear that kind of stuff.

The only difference between British and Australian English is the accent (which is different in certain parts of the country) and a few slang words

Peridotpixie
11-06-2002, 11:19 PM
It's a little tricky--because when I hear her speak, what I overwhelmingly hear is her Belgian accent!
But, as an American, I feel like she definitely pronounces some words closer to the Australian pronunciation than to British or American. I can't think of any specifics right now, but I've noticed it.

I don't really want to get involved in this whole political thing, but in all honesty, even if the democrats had control of congress, we wouldn't be seeing any pro-homosexual legislation in the next two years. :(

I'm following Lindsay/Monica online, after watching the first set, and I'm delighted that Monica took the second. Good for her! Way to fight. She saved two match points, I think, and came back from behind to take the tiebreak 8-6. She seems to play incredibly well on the big points.

Is your problem at work a maths problem?? :p:p
We ha dtoo do an investigation in Maths today and i didnt soo any off it!! It was about an Ant who wanted too go too different places on a cube but couldnt go over the same line tiwce, Wel i actually did it but prollly did it worng!! :p:p Oh well!!

Puss-in-Boots

Yeah, it's a long math problem... to do with a certain family of polynomials.... my boss and I are both quite excited... it's been unsolved for over 100 years, and we're closer to a solution than anyone else to date.

An ant who wanted to go to different places on a cube, but couldn't go over the same line twice?

This is actually a problem in graph theory, if you have time, please tell me more about this problem. Depending on the circumstances the solution will have to do with Eulerian graphs (easy) or finding a Hamiltonian cycle (slightly harder).

11-07-2002, 09:49 AM
LOL... actually when we have been working hard on our math, my boss and I both get bad headaches, since the problem is monumentally difficult. Well, we both also suffer from hayfever, so we're both really fun to be with in the late afternoons when we are tired, have headaches and are irritable. :p Sometimes, if we hit a brick wall I also get impatient and pissy, but my boss is great, he puts up with my sookfests. I suppose I'll mellow in time.

Anyway, the trick to those sorts of problems you had today... if you can visit a place more than once, but you can only travel on a road once, you'll be able to visit all the places, and return to your starting point if every place is connected to an even number of roads. If exactly two of the places are connected to an odd number of roads, but all the others are connected to an even number of roads, you'll still be able to visit all the places whilst travelling each road only once, provided the two places connected to an odd number of roads are your start and finish points.

I don't know how important they are but I usually mess around with them a little bit... like say the pin placement is easy then you'd want to be aggressive with your approach because it's not likely you'll screw it up... I dunno, I usually adjust tactics from 40-70 depending on everything... it's hard to explain though  :p

Well, I do have some concern for politics and current affairs, but I think I'll wait until emotions from the recent elections have cooled down a bit before dusting off my soapbox.

Good morning all  Just a quick hi and bye before work. I watched (and taped) Kim's match last night. She was really good, despite those u-gly shoes. She just tore through that match.
Afterwards Mary Joe Fernandez had a little interview with Kim. Although I wouldn't exactly call it an interview. It's hilarious how one little questions can launch that girl into a breathless one-sentence monologue about, well, just about everything. Afterwards I was dizzy from not breathing along with her :D very cute.

Hope you all have a good day.

Me too but I don't ever plan to get in the middle of Scott and Marly about that lol... I just think Marly thought that Scott said that she didn't believe in gay rights but I don't think that's what Scott meant

oh, I hadn't really left yet. Still catching up on tennis news. I fell alseep in front of the tv while monica and lindsay were playing. i actaully woke up for a second during the whole saved match points drama, but just couldn't stay awake. What's wrong with me?? Good for Monica though.

Anyway, to answer your question, Angele, Kim mentioned a lot of things in her interview.

-she said she looks forward to playing Justine; that that's a special event for Belgium and that they are playing an exhibition match next week in Belgium, so that Belgians get to see them twice
- she said she probably got to practice most on the court of all players (the court was finished the day before) because Venus and Serena didn't come practice
- She said Chanda wasn't her best (no shit)
- she said she prefers playing indoors because she likes to hit the ball in the middle of the racket and that easier to do when you don't have wind and the sun to deal with
- she said that ever since New Haven she has been motivated and has been having fun on court again and that's she had a really good summer.

She might have said other things, but I don't remember right now. I'll replay the tape later.

Oh :wavey: again Marly! I didn't realize you were still online (although I guess you prolly would have left by now LOL)

Anyway, I was actually reading Time magazine online and I must concede that there are a whole spectrum of issues one could consider: heathcare, taxes, education, other aspects of government spending, foreign policy, etc. etc. so, if I were a US citizen (and I'd vote btw, at people who don't, did you know voting is compulsory in Aus?) I must admit it would take me time to make a complete decision over as many issues as possible, and I would find it hard, since I am more passionate over some issues than others. ;) That being said however, I do lean to the left ideologically.

Oh well... I tried symmetrizing the Plebanski spinor like he suggested, but it's not giving me the result I expected, so I can't go on for now till I find out what's happening there , I'll ask him tomorrow. :p
