Tone of Wellstone memorial generates anger
Ventura blasts 'political rally'

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (CNN) -- The partisan tone of the memorial service for the late Sen. Paul Wellstone stirred anger Wednesday in some Republicans, political consultants and radio talk show hosts who say some of the comments and behavior were inappropriate.

Democrats defended the nature of the service, but they also apologized to anyone who might have been offended.

Minority Leader Trent Lott, R-Mississippi, was booed Tuesday night when he entered Williams Arena at the University of Minnesota for the service. Scattered boos also greeted independent Gov. Jesse Ventura, who Wednesday lashed out at Democrats for what he called a "political rally."

The crowd cheered loudly for former Vice President Walter Mondale, who announced in a letter Wednesday that he would run for Wellstone's seat.

Some Republicans in Minnesota demanded equal time from the local television stations that carried last night's memorial, attended by a crowd of more than 20,000. But officials at local television stations pointed out that they will cover President Bush's expected trip to Minnesota this weekend, when he will campaign for Republican Norm Coleman.

Vin Weber, a former congressman from Minnesota, lambasted Democrats for what he called a "complete, total absolute sham."

"To them, Wellstone's death, apparently, was just another campaign event," he told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Dave Ryan, a radio talk show host in Minneapolis, said the airwaves have been full of talk about the service, which featured speeches from Wellstone family members and friends who urged the crowd to remember Wellstone when they cast their votes next week.

"I guess the local stations here were swamped with phone calls from people who were angry because they had been sold a memorial service that had turned into a political rally," Ryan said in an interview with CNN. "And I really thought that was kind of shameful. I really did."

Democrats, who initially dismissed the criticism, later apologized for some activity, but said the event was unscripted and reflected the strong emotions people felt about Wellstone's death.

"We're sorry if some of the comments went too far in a political direction," Jim Farrell, the former press secretary for Wellstone, told CNN.

"The Republicans in the middle of a memorial service decided to call it politics," said Mike Erlandson, chairman of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, as the Democrats are known in Minnesota. "It wasn't politics; it was Paul Wellstone."

Erlandson called the boos "unfortunate and inappropriate," but said the service was "something that was very emotional."

"While it had a little bit of a rally feel, and they were talking about public policy and public policy issues, that was Senator Wellstone through and through," Erlandson said. "I mean, he did not talk those issues for politics; he talked these issues for passion."

The criticism didn't just come from Republicans.

Ventura, who walked out of the service, said Democrats "should hang their head in shame."

"The first part of it I thought was excellent. When Rick Kahn got up, I left the building halfway through what he was doing," said Ventura, who could appoint an interim senator to take Wellstone's seat until November 5.

"I feel used. I feel violated and duped over the fact that that turned into nothing more than a political rally," he said.

Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson, who represented the White House at the service, said the partisan nature of the service did not surprise him, nor did it bother him.

"I was not offended by it, but some other people might be," he said.

Russia names Moscow siege gas
Wednesday, October 30, 2002 Posted: 9:11 PM EST (0211 GMT)

MOSCOW, Russia (CNN) -- Four days after Russian forces used anesthetic gas to end a hostage standoff by Chechen rebels, Russia's top health official identified the main component of the gas blamed for the deaths of 117 hostages.

The gas was based on derivatives of fentanyl, Health Minister Yuri Shevchenko said Wednesday.

Fentanyl is an opiate-based narcotic 100 times more powerful than morphine, according to the American Society of Anesthesiologists. It is used for pain relief in surgeries, and is the most common narcotic used for anesthesia in surgeries done in the United States.

Fentanyl can cause extreme drowsiness, but American anesthesiologists do not use it in doses meant to put patients to sleep. It's used in the United States to stop breathing during surgery when breathing is mechanically supported.

In high doses it can not only knock people unconscious but also cause them to stop breathing. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says in such doses fentanyl can be fatal.

Other potential side effects include liver, heart, and kidney problems as well as nausea and vomiting. A person who vomits while unconscious may choke -- another way fentanyl can lead to death.

One reason Russian forces used derivatives of fentanyl probably was how quickly the drug works. "People have less time to react," Dr. James Cottrell, president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, told CNN. "It kicks in within a matter of minutes."

Russian officials have said use of the anesthetic gas was necessary to "neutralize" the captors, who were strapped with explosives and threatened to kill everyone. Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia's operation "managed to do the impossible" and save most of the 800 hostages.

However, Cottrell said use of a gas based on derivatives of fentanyl runs serious risks.

"If you blast it into a room ... you have no idea how much is going to go into the person's system." The effect on each person would depend on where he or she was sitting in relation to vents and other factors, Cottrell said.

Shevchenko did not state exactly what was in the gas that Russian forces used. But he insisted "by themselves, these compounds cannot provoke a fatal outcome."

He said the deaths resulted because the gas was used on people who, after a 58-hour standoff, were already suffering from lack of movement, hunger, dehydration, lack of oxygen, and severe stress.

Shevchenko also said use of the gas did not violate the international convention banning the use of chemical weapons.

Russian officials had refused to identify the gas used, saying the information in the wrong hands could endanger innocent people. But international pressure mounted. Political leaders both within Russia and around the world have said more of the hostages might have been saved if doctors and others had known sooner precisely what kind of gas was used.

Shevchenko denied the charge. "Specialists, in particular myself, had been warned even though the operation had to be carried out on short notice," he said. Medics had prepared more than 1,000 doses of the appropriate antidote, he said.

White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said Tuesday "the president feels very strongly that responsibility for this [the hostage deaths] rests with the terrorists who took these people hostage and put them in harm's way in the first place."

Captors shot and killed two hostages before elite Russian soldiers stormed the theater.

In addition to the 117 deaths due to complications stemming from the gas, hundreds more of the hostages were hospitalized.

Wednesday's disclosure from Russian authorities followed a statement from a German medical expert who said he believed Russian forces used a different anesthetic gas called halothane after finding traces of that drug in two survivors.

Alexei Arbatov, head of the Russian parliament's defense committee, told CNN Monday that the government's alleged failure to tell doctors what antidote to use on victims had been a "great blunder" that should be investigated.

Doctors treated survivors with various remedies -- finally settling on narcan, which is used for countering the effects of heroin and a variety of morphine-based medications.

One hostage said: "I couldn't see and taste it, but after this gas, I laid on the floor ... and I remember nothing except I woke up in the hospital."

The rebels threatened to blow up the building and kill everyone inside if authorities attacked, or their demands to end the war in Chechnya were not met, and had rigged the theater with explosives.

Security Council closer to Iraq compromise

UNITED NATIONS (CNN) -- The U.N. Security Council showed signs Wednesday of possible progress toward a compromise on an Iraq resolution among the five veto-holding permanent members.

Diplomats said the next council meeting on the resolution will be when the United States has a new draft resolution to present.

"The ball is now in the U.S. court," one Chinese diplomat said following a council discussion.

"We're making progress," said a U.S. official, who added that a new draft might be ready late in the week. A vote is not likely until next week.

The crucial sticking point between the United States and Britain on one side and France, Russia and China on the other is the reference to Iraq being in "material breach" of its obligations under the new resolution.

The Russia representative told council members his country might be willing to keep the contentious phrase "material breach" in the resolution depending on how it was used.

One potential compromise would be to drop the current U.S. draft reference to "a further material breach" if Iraq failed to comply in any way with the new resolution. References to past and current "material breaches" could possibly remain.

Russia, France and China have worried that the phrase would be used by the United States as a trigger for a military attack on Iraq.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has appeared to contradict U.S. and British assertions that Iraq has chemical, biological and possibly nuclear weapons and stressed that Moscow did not think a new resolution was legally needed.

Russia and Iraq have a long-standing relationship, but Moscow has demanded that Iraq adhere to U.N. resolutions and allow international weapons inspectors back into the country.

Russia's ambassador, Sergey Lavrov, told reporters that Russia's concern remained "automaticity in the use of force."

French President Jacques Chirac has proposed a two-step approach to Iraq in which the U.N. Security Council would first pass a resolution demanding the return of weapons inspectors.

Under the French proposal, if inspectors were refused access, the Security Council would then consider a second resolution authorizing the use of force.

Chirac has said that France would reject any resolution seen as paving the way for U.S.-led military action without further U.N. approval.

One Western diplomat said France would not mind having tough words in the resolution, but "the problem is the context" in which the words are put.

China has indicated it prefers resolving differences between Iraq and the United States by diplomacy, with the United Nations playing a pivotal role in mediation efforts.

In Washington, Secretary of State Colin Powell told reporters:

"There is nothing that we propose in this resolution, or we would find acceptable in a resolution, that would handcuff the president of the United States in doing what he feels he must do to defend the United States, defend our people and defend our interests in the world."

Chief U.N. weapons inspector Hans Blix met Wednesday with U.S. officials in Washington. Blix told CNN the purpose of the meeting was to ensure support for weapons inspectors.

While a future resolution could put pressure on weapons inspectors to report infractions by Iraq, Blix said recently he does not decide "war and peace."

"If there are any obstructions or problems, we will report them," Blix said Wednesday. However, he said "judgment" would have to be exercised by inspectors as to what to report.

He said inspectors could be back in Iraq as soon as a week to 10 days after passage of a resolution.

Pentagon to train journalists for war

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Pentagon is offering to train journalists in the basics of military combat as part of its contingency planning for media coverage of a possible war with Iraq.

Details of the one-week training sessions are being worked out, but Pentagon officials said Wednesday the training would be led by each military service.

Journalists would learn about military customs, ammunitions, basic first aid and how to protect themselves in the event of nuclear, chemical and biological attack. They also would learn about the rules of engagement, the U.S. command structure and military customs, according to a memo sent to bureau chiefs in Washington.

In a meeting with news managers Wednesday, Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said the training would provide a measure of confidence for commanders that journalists would not hinder their operations. He said the training was not a prerequisite for joining a military unit and neither was it a guarantee of access.

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said it was "generally almost always helpful" to provide access for journalists, though he added "there are times when it is not appropriate."

Pentagon officials maintained that U.S. officials have yet to make any decisions about starting any battles with Iraq. But Whitman also said the Pentagon was committed to embedding reporters with military units early, if there is a conflict with Iraq.

"We think this training is an excellent idea. AP journalists will benefit from it, and the commanders will become more comfortable with the media," said Mike Silverman, managing editor of The Associated Press. "If there is a war with Iraq, we hope the Pentagon will allow journalists to move quickly into the theater and embed with military units at the front."

Two border crossers shot dead in rural Arizona

TUCSON, Arizona (AP) -- Gunmen opened fire on a dozen illegal immigrants who were apparently waiting to be picked up by smugglers, and two of the border crossers were killed.

One man escaped, but the assailants -- possibly immigrant smugglers -- may have kidnapped the other survivors, said Mike Minter, spokesman for the Pinal County Sheriff's Department.

"We've been over 15 square miles out here and not found one track from any of the individuals," he said Thursday.

The bodies were found Wednesday at a remote cattle pond about 35 miles northwest of Tucson that is often used as a spot to pick up and drop off border crossers, Minter said.

The man who ran off ended up at Red Rock Feeding Co., a cattle feed lot about a mile west of the pond.

He told David Cook, the lot's assistant manager, that he and 27 other illegal immigrants had been dropped off at the pond earlier in the day, Cook said.

"A car came with a (smuggler) and took eight of them. A little while later, a car came and took another eight of them. The 12 of them just waited, and that's when two guys came up on them and shot them," Cook said.

Earlier this week, workers opening a train car in Iowa found the decomposed bodies of 11 people believed to have been illegal immigrants smuggled into the country in June. The state medical examiner said the victims died of extreme heat and dehydration.

On Thursday, Texas troopers discovered 25 other illegal immigrants, including children, in a locked tractor-trailer that was stopped for speeding. They lacked food and water but appeared to be in good health.

Illegal immigrants found in speeding tractor-trailer

SWEETWATER, Texas (AP) -- State troopers discovered 25 illegal immigrants, including children as young as 3, in a locked tractor-trailer that was stopped for speeding.

The immigrants all appeared to be in good health, but they had no food, water or toilet facilities and had been in the trailer for more than 10 hours, according to the Department of Public Safety.

The driver was arrested after officers found more than four grams of methamphetamine, a pistol and $9,620 in cash that may have been paid by the immigrants, officials said. The Border Patrol said the driver, who was not identified, would be charged with alien smuggling.

Officials said the immigrants had entered the country illegally at a crossing near El Paso.

Earlier this week, workers opening a train car at a grain elevator in Iowa found the badly decomposed bodies of 11 people believed to have been illegal immigrants smuggled into the country in June. The state medical examiner said the victims, seven men and four women, died of extreme heat and dehydration.

Mom arrested for watching TV as daughter kills son

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico (Reuters) -- The mother of a 10-year-old girl who beat her 4-year-old brother to death on the instructions of their stepfather was arrested for watching television during the incident, officials said Saturday.

Natasha Guerrero, the children's mother, was arrested on charges of negligently permitting child abuse resulting in the death her son, 4-year-old Devon Booth, said Las Cruces Police spokesman Mark Nunley.

Devon's sister kicked, punched and hit him allegedly on the instructions of their stepfather, Louie Guerrero, 38.

The boy was being punished for bed wetting and drinking from the toilet, and was beaten late on September 21 and into the next morning. He died in an Albuquerque, New Mexico, hospital Monday.

The complaint said the stepfather instructed the sister to punish Devon while the mother watched television in another room. He was arrested earlier in the week on charges of child abuse resulting in death.

Both parents are in the Dona Ana County Detention Facility and a grand jury hearing on the charges is scheduled for Thursday, said a spokesman for the Las Cruces district attorney's office.

The girl was not charged because of her age.

She and two other children in the home are with the state child protective services and will likely be placed in foster homes.

Police find meth lab on SMU campus

UNIVERSITY PARK, Texas (AP) -- Police at Southern Methodist University say they found a methamphetamine laboratory in a campus music practice room.

No arrests had been made, said campus police Capt. Tommy Jones.

The drug production lab was found at the Owens Fine Arts Center on Thursday, a day after students returned from fall break.

The center houses the Meadows School of Fine Arts, including offices, classrooms and practice rooms. All are open to the public until the center is locked up at night, Jones said.

Investigators collected several items used in the making of the drug, as well as papers bearing fingerprints and other clues investigators hope will lead to the people who used the lab, he said.

"I don't know if they left in haste or what, but they left a lot of evidence there," Jones said. "But then again, when you're cooking up drugs, you can't be too bright to begin with."

Tennis talent search unearths little Lleytons
By Richard Yallop
October 31, 2002
A NATIONAL junior talent search has unearthed a new tennis clone – the "little Lleyton", who hits his double-handed backhand like Australia's world No 1, wears his white cap back to front, and clenches his fist and shouts "come on".

The search by Tennis Australia has uncovered "little Lleytons" across the country, and yesterday it was the turn of Melbourne, where pint-sized Andrew Timos was found – a 10-year-old from Northcote who eats, sleeps and dreams of his hero Lleyton Hewitt.

After showing off all the Hewitt trademarks at the Milo under-11 talent search at Melbourne Park, Andrew said: "I do everything like him – the 'get ready' (the distinctive Hewitt crouch as he prepares to receive serve), the serve, the forehand, the backhand, the 'come on', the hat backwards."

He draws the line at the Hewitt "duck" gesture when the South Australian points his outstretched palm at his forehead: "It's silly, and it makes the other person upset."

Andrew has Hewitt posters all round his room, and pictures of the player in a special scrapbook. His father, Paul Timos, a former Australian rules footballer – as was Hewitt's dad – said: "Andrew has 12 Lleyton Hewitt videos at home, and that's all we do."

Andrew isn't big enough to fit into adult-size Nike gear – Hewitt's sponsored clothing label, which reaps the player an endorsement for tune – but he's working on it. "The attire's the next aim," said his father.

Needless to say, Andrew wants to be a professional tennis player, and he takes heart that although he's smaller than other boys of his age, the slightly built Hewitt has proved that size isn't everything in world tennis.

Tennis Australia under-14 coach Troy Ayres said of the "little Lleyton" phenomenon: "So many young boys look at Lleyton as their favourite player."

"Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" is not a sequel to "Grand Theft Auto III." However, it "turns out on almost every level [to be] a big improvement over GTA III," according to Dan "Shoe" Hsu, editor in chief of "Electronic Gaming Monthly."

Set in the 1980's, "Vice City" is a colorful place that's similar in style to Miami, where scantly clad women, fast cars, and catchy tunes flow like wine. The main character, Tommy Vercetti, lands in this adult atmosphere and makes it his mission to run the show. Cross him, and you could get whacked with a chain saw, hammer, or revolver.

Fans of living life in the fast lane will love racing around Vice City in motorcycles, helicopters, and powerboats. In addition, the game's streets are littered with four-wheel activity. Shoe told "Big Video Game Hunting" that "you can drive around in ambulances, and you can even steal a pizza delivery car and drive around and deliver pizzas if you want."

With all this whirling activity, it's no surprise that, as "Shoe" explains, "You can keep yourself busy for like dozens and dozens of hours without actually playing the main storyline of the game."

That is, of course, assuming you can get your hands on a copy.

"Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" received an "M" rating from the Entertainment Software Rating Board, and Shoe agreed that only members of the older crowd should get their mitts on this one.

Comparing "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" to the films "Goodfellas" and "Scarface," Shoe told "Big Video Game Hunting" that this game is definitely "not meant for children."

Yeah she is, Mum and Dad where thinking about taking them too court or something but then they just though that It would be stupid beacse it woudl drag on for ever and We always goo though this hospital and on all the other occasions they have been soo good too us!!

Puss-in-Boots
10-31-2002, 11:13 AM
Yeah, lawsuits tend to be more trouble than they are worth....it'd be easier and more amicable to come to an understanding with the hospital without going that far. Are they at least offering some form of compensation for their error, like doing the procedure for cheaper / free?

fcap
10-31-2002, 11:16 AM
Um well It only cost's like $50 anyway beacause were in the highest Gruop of HBF ( Dad has hepas of medical prolems through diabete's and Cancer ) So i dont knwo about that, BUt they shell get a really nice room. Its kind of her ussual room now though!! :p:p

Hi untitled! I don't know if you caught my earlier post asking you this -- what are you studying for your BMus?

I'm only in my first year of the course, so I'm not doing a major yet. I've been stuck doing crappy compulsory history subjects :(...but the rest of the course is good (practical study-flute, techniques- composition stuff, aural, ensembles)

Don;t know, but the site says Lleyton won...and every match has been best of 3

Goonergal
10-31-2002, 01:45 PM
Only the final is best of 5. In the rounds the max is best of three.

Puss-in-Boots
10-31-2002, 01:45 PM
Oh... wait, maybe I get it... aren't finals of TMS tourneys best of 5? Otherwise, there's no bloody reason for that scoreboard to have room for 5 sets...

Anyway... *hides in shame*

The scoreboard might have room for 5 sets because the final is best of 5 sets. Don't quote me on that, though. :p

hope so too, Cilla! but my money won't be on Johansson...

I haven't checked the draw yet, so I have no clue who might be the next opponent for Lleyton, but I really hope he makes it one match further than DH. I'd be already very happy with that.

Need to be off now, 'til later y'all and enjoy Lleyton's nice pic (just posted) :)
