HOURS OF LABOUR (Important to Note)

Q: What are considered full-time hours?

A: The Labour Standards Code & Regulations does not provide a definition for full-time hours.

The only somewhat related provision is provided for under Section 33 of the Code (see the Guide to the Labour Standards Code of Nova Scotia) which refers to the possibility of an employee waiving their Vacation Leave entitlement, but not Vacation Pay entitlement, when the employee works less than 90% of the regular working hours, during a continuous 12-month period.

Q: Is there any legislation in place providing requirements for posting of schedules for hourly employees and procedures related to notification of upcoming shifts and contacting employees?

A: The Labour Standards Code does not set any requirements for posting of schedules. Procedures for such would be at the discretion of the employer. Please note that the General Minimum Wage Order provides for Waiting Time and reads as follows:
"All time during which an employee waits for work on the premises of his or her employer at the request of the employer shall be counted as time worked."
In addition, the General Minimum Wage Order provides for Call In and reads as follows:
"11(1) Where an employer recalls an employee to work outside the employee's scheduled working hours, the employer shall pay the employee for not less than 3 hours at the minimum straight time rate notwithstanding that the employee works less than 3 hours...."

Q: Is there a set amount of hours for casual employment?

A: No, the Labour Standards Code does not define casual hours as it may vary from company to company. The standards apply to all employees who are covered under the Code regardless of their status.

Employment of Children

This section tells about the rules in the Labour Standards Code on paying children for work. If you know of a child who works, or if you are an employer with employees who are under the age of 16, then this section may be important for you.

The Labour Standards Code tells when children may be employed in Nova Scotia. The laws about children’s employment do not apply to people who are 16 years and over.

The law divides children into two groups: those under 14 and those under 16.

Children Under 14

No one can pay wages to a child under the age of 14 to do work that

is likely to be unwholesome or harmful to the child’s health or normal development
is likely to keep the child out of school or make it hard for the child to learn at school
No one is to employ a child under 14 to do work
for more than eight hours a day
for more than three hours on a school day unless a certificate has been issued under the Education Act to allow the child to work
for any time during the day when that time plus the time the child is in school adds up to more than eight hours
between the hours of 10 p.m. of any day and 6 a.m. of the next day

Children Under 16

The Labour Standards Code says that no one is to employ a child under the age of 16 in any work that risks the child’s well-being. For example,

mining
manufacturing
construction
forestry
work in garages and automobile service stations
work in hotels and restaurants
work in billiard rooms

Exception

The Labour Standards Code rules for children under 16 do not apply to anyone who employs members of his or her own family.

Liability of a Parent or Guardian

Any parent or guardian of a child whose employment violates the Labour Standards Code can be fined unless he or she can prove that the child worked without his or her knowledge.

I LOVE AUSSIE RULES! IT, ER, RULES! Well there was this one guy that I really like and we were getting off for ages in various places (like he was lying on top of me while I was on the ground etc and now I keep finding bits of grass in my hair) but I got kinda upset cos he then got off with my best friend for ages so there was a bit of an argument there! I also got off with this guy who was shorter than me but it was alright cos we were sitting down, then there was this guy who is a proper player but I only got off with him to shut him up cos he kept asking me if I'd get off with him and I just wanted him to go away, but now I find out he's got a girlfriend so I fell REALLY bad! Then there was another guy that I have some history with so that was for old times sake. And the last one was this guy that I'd got off with before and he asked me to get off with him again cos he said I was a good pull so I thought I might as well. So that's all of them and I made a complete fool of myself in front of the guy I really like cos I kept saying that I love him and I've never loved anyone as much as I love him, but it's not my fault it's the alcohol!

Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free,
We've golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea
Our land abounds in nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia fair
In joyful strains then let us sing

O beloved Belgium, sacred land of our fathers,

Our heart and soul are dedicated to you.

Our strength and the blood of our veins we offer,

Be our goal, in work and battle.

Prosper, o country, in unbreakable unity,

Always be yourself and free.

Trust in the word that, undaunted, you can speak:

For King, for Freedom and for Law.

AMERICA
Written by Neil Diamond
Far
We've been traveling far
Without a home
But not without a star
Free
Only want to be free
We huddle close
Hang on to a dream

On the boats and on the planes
They're coming to America
Never looking back again
They're coming to America

Home, don't it seem so far away
Oh, we're traveling light today
In the eye of the storm
In the eye of the storm

Home, to a new and a shiny place
Make our bed, and we'll say our grace
Freedom's light burning warm
Freedom's light burning warm

Everywhere around the world
They're coming to America
Every time that flag's unfurled
They're coming to America

Got a dream to take them there
They're coming to America
Got a dream they've come to share
They're coming to America

They're coming to America
They're coming to America
They're coming to America
They're coming to America
Today, today, today, today, today

My country 'tis of thee
Today
Sweet land of liberty
Today
Of thee I sing
Today
Of thee I sing
Today

De Vlaamse Leeuw (The Flemish Lion)
Anthem of the Flemish Community

by Edgard Goedleven (Davidsfonds - Eufoda)

The Flemish Community anthem, De Vlaamse Leeuw, was composed in l847 by Karel Miry (1823-1889), who set it to a text by Hippoliet van Peene (1811-1864). At that time Flanders' otherwise glorious history experienced a sharp crisis. The Frenchification of the leadership, which had begun already in the 15th century with the Dukes of Burgundy, continued to expand steadily under the regimes following to downfall of Antwerp in 1585, which had resulted in the separation between the Northern and Southern Provinces. Moreover, especially from the second half of the l8th century onwards, French became the universal language used all over Europe.

In that same period, Flanders became a much used pawn on the European political chess-board: during the Austrian regime of Joseph II, the Brabantine Revolution of 1789 (i.e. before the French Revolution), led Flanders into the short-lived 'Republic of the United States of Belgium'. In 1791 the Austrian regime was briefly restored, but soon enough Flanders was annexed by the French Republic in 1794. Then, after Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo in 1815, Flanders was annexed to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. And, finally, after the Belgian Revolution of 1830, Flanders became a part of the Kingdom of Belgium.

In 1830, the young Kingdom of Belgium made it quite clear that it would put the 'Dutch regime' behind it by consciously striving for the establishment of a Frenchspeaking Belgium. Then, in 1838, in the midst of a period of unprecedented cultural decline for Flanders, Hendrik Conscience wrote his famous novel De Leeuw van Vlaanderen (The Lion of Flanders). In this novel he glorifies Robrecht van Bethune, the count of Flanders who brought the decisive victory of the Flemish over the King of France in the 'Battle of the Golden Spurs' on July ll 1302.

After the publication of Conscience's novel, the Lion of Flanders became the symbol of Flemish revival. When Karel Miry composed the song De Vlaamse Leeuw in 1847, he would give it the prophetic subtitle of 'National Song'.

Not surprisingly, as soon as 'cultural autonomy' was introduced in Belgium in 1973 (law of July 3), the Flemish Cultural Council proclaimed by decree of July 6 1973 the existence of a Flemish flag, a Flemish anthem, and a Flemish public holiday.

To decorate the flag, the coat of arms of the Counts of Flanders was chosen: "In gold, a lion of sable (black), claws and tongue in red." As the anthem, the song De Vlaamse Leeuw by Karel Miry and Hippoliet van Peene was chosen. And the eleventh of July was proclaimed public holiday of the Flemish Community, in remembrance of the 'Battle of the Golden Spurs' of 1302. In a special law of August 8, 1980, the Belgian State reform has granted legal personality to the Flemish Community. This has allowed it to establish its own government (the Flemish Executive), its own parliament (the Flemish Council), as well as a Ministry of the Flemish Community, which has been effective since January 1983.

On the symbolic date of July 11, 1981, Karel Poma, then Minister of Culture of the Flemish Community, laid down the official version of the lyrics and the musical notation of the anthem. After advice of the Algemeen Nederlands Zangverbond (ANZ), this official version included corrections and alterations of the original notation in some places. The most important change concerned the melody: written for a three part choir in the original version, it was quite high, and therefore it was lowered by two tones. The lyrics were written in modern Dutch. Only the sentence "a nation will not perish" was changed into "a nation will never perish", which is the way it has been song for generations. In accordance with the Belgian state reform, whereby the Cultural Council was replaced by the Flemish Council and whereby the Flemish Community was granted legal personality, a new decree was issued on November 7 1990, laying down the coat of arms, the flag, the anthem, and the public holiday of the Flemish Community.

Various performances on Eufoda CD1157

The various performances available on record go back to the excellent orchestrations and arrangements by Jef van Hoof (1886-1959). They were revised and conformed to the official version by Hans Swinnen (the organ version by Kristiaan van Ingelgem, and the carillon version by Jos D'Hollander). Mrs. Magda de Groodt, representative administrator of the Jef van Hoof trust De Crans, kindly authorized revisions, performances and publications.

Angele, have you finished your shift now? Or do you still need to go back to work today?

Angele
08-03-2002, 09:00 PM
I'm finished my shift Ingrid, no more work for me today... well I have to baby-sit tonight but that's seperate lol... and I'm off tomorrow :D

KaseyL
08-03-2002, 09:04 PM
That's a bit of good news Angele!

Angele
08-03-2002, 09:08 PM
Yeah some good news... I'm still kicking myself for agreeing to baby-sit though :fiery: I'm such a... a... I don't even know the word for it :o I really didn't want to baby sit and I'll still don't but I'm such a wimp. She asked me to baby sit and I didn't have the guts to say no to her face :( :o

KaseyL
08-03-2002, 09:13 PM
ow Angele, that's a pity.

But you'll learn to refuse things, though. You'll learn to take care of your own wishes, be more assertive.
I am sure that will come, it just takes time and some experience in handling such situations.

Angele
08-03-2002, 09:18 PM
I hope you're right Ingrid!! I'm such an idiot though, really... I'd make myself miserable to make somebody else happy :o

KaseyL
08-03-2002, 09:27 PM
Well, hope the baby is a quiet little  Angele!
Hope you'll have a good time. And that the parents don't get home too late!

Angele
08-03-2002, 09:29 PM
Actually I'm not baby-sitting babies lol... I think the kids are like 7 and 10 or something... hopefully they'll be in bed early (doubtful) and the parents will be home early (even more doubtful) and I'll have a good night and be home early enough to be able to talk to you fine people :D

KaseyL
08-03-2002, 09:30 PM
And don't say that you're an idiot! It's really proof that you're a nice girl!

My oldest sis is just the same.

You just need to learn to refuse things from time to time, that's all!

Angele
08-03-2002, 09:30 PM
pfff Anna just wasted two match points

oops LOL not really babies, no. :D

Give them lots of warm milk, makes them sleepy if they aren't interested in their bed! Or otherwise you put on a tennis match of ... W vs ... W... always good for an early night LOL.

Nah, thumbs up that you're home early enough to find some people here!

Angele

olala... 2 AM

I might be online then... if I ever can get in wta, that is...

I just tried, again, to post something and do some stuff on CCLounge...got kicked out again, had to re-enter my username and password, and hup... nothing... can't post...

Gonna try it one more time and then I give up and see later...
maybe when you're back from babysitting.

Might be that I'll need some milk then, to calm me LOL.

Virgil

Hey everyone who's here. Did anyone see that Haas-Canas match, I was really rooting for Haas. What can I say, I can a hold a grudge. I'm still pissed about the French Open.

Angele
08-03-2002, 10:03 PM
Hi V :wavey: I didn't see the match, I was at work :( I wsa rooting for Tommy too though, too bad he lost... I'm still pissed about the French Open too :o

Virgil
08-03-2002, 10:08 PM
Lucky you for not having to see the match. Tommy was really close . He was up a break in the final set and had 40-0 to go up 5-3, but instead got broken and it was downhill from there. By the way, who exactly is Anna playing, I read somewhere she had two match points.

Angele
08-03-2002, 10:11 PM
 at Anna  She wasted two match points against Jelena and Jelena went on to win the match :fiery: :fiery:

Virgil
08-03-2002, 10:14 PM
Boy that sucks. At least she's playing better and fighting more these days. She just needs to learn how to capitalize on her chances. Play the big points. Kim has the same bad habit sometimes. So is it Jelena and Venus in the finals?

Angele
08-03-2002, 10:18 PM
Venus and Lindsay are playing their semi tonight so it's yet to be decided who's gonna be in the final...I hope it's Lindsay... and i hope she crushes Jelena tomorrow :fiery: :fiery: :fiery:

KaseyL

And hi Virgil!

Virgil

Yeah I can tell you're really rooting for Jelena's downfall, by the colorful similies you used.

KaseyL
08-03-2002, 10:21 PM
I wished Haas had won, Virgil. But *sigh*

Virgil

Sorry Kasey, didn't realize you here. Hi.

Sorry I was a bit 'silent' Angele, but I managed to get on wta for once!

I am preparing a reply re some post contents... don't want to see CClounge end up in a fight between williams fans and others... think I better react now before some williams fans, style of general messages, you know what I mean, are going to destroy things in there.

Virgil

Don't worry, if Kim keeps up her form, that won't last long. Remember Jelena rarely does that well at the slams. Kim just needs to step it up at the Open.

ach and re your question Angele: it's now 12.30 for me. Going to catch some sleep soon.

KaseyL

someone called williamses names...

it's no secret I don't like them, but the words aren't so suited on wta, knowing how furious the reactions of wiliams fans always can be.
If I don't interfere now, we might end up with lots of hate and reply posters... want to keep that out of the lounge.

Angele
08-03-2002, 10:35 PM
I didn't read that in the lounge  What was said?? And in which thread??

Virgil

What are you two talking about? You've lost me.
