They're doing the draw tomorrow at 12:30, German time.
No Nathalie? Is she hurt, Scott?
I expected no Mary...unfortunately, I think she's done. It's really a shame. I saw her practicing at the US Open, and she looked very determined, but she just can't seem to get it together.

Scotso
10-06-2002, 01:05 AM
I'm assuming it's a gooberish romance? :p

Scotso
10-06-2002, 01:06 AM
No, Nathalie was still in doubles in Moscow so she couldn't make it to Filderstadt qualifying. Too bad, her current ranking would get her in the main draw, I hate how they do commitments.

Scotso
10-06-2002, 01:07 AM
Yeah, I think Mary is done too.

I want her to at least play the French Open once more, though.

Nope, in fact most players I have to pair up to get enough for a 4 person draw.

So, the doubles draw probably won't be out until the main draw points deadline.

so far I have Lapentti/Spencer who are always together, Espinosa/Vandecaetsbeek, Almasy/London, and Golduck/Seles who are always together.

I'm good, having a relaxing weekend.... weather is getting warmer, but fortunately my hayfever has mercifully decided not to kick in today.

Not really taking a break, more like being a bit lazy this weekend... I have assignments to grade I haven't looked at yet...

How has your weekend been so far?

You're not studying, are you?

Here's a question: does Kim have a first round bye in Filderstadt?I'm guessing not, since there must be a ton of seeds

Well, I'm trying to get on Marly's good side. There's only that many times you can offend here before out comes Betsy.

Weekends are supposed to be lazy, right? I slept in today and for some reason decided to give my car a little attention. I've had it for a year, but it is about 10 years old. So I scraped off ten years worth of parking and university stickers. Cleaned out the trunk and then decided to clean it. Well, to have it cleaned, actually. I took it one of those places where an army of underpaid kids storms your car and cleans it inside and out. It literally had not been cleaned in years. How awful is that? I am no o wner of a dented and rusty, but clean car. That was the highlight of my day.

pfff. I am feeling so tennis deprived. I feel like I haven't seen a good tennis match in ages. Can't wait for the masters. They'd better show that on television.

Do you like any other sports than tennis, Allan?

No, not studying because I'm lazy. :)
And, sadly, Kim will not get a bye in either Filderstadt or Zurich. She's seeded sixth in Filderstadt, and only the first four seeds get byes--in this case, Capriati, Davenport, Dokic, and, I believe, Henin. Mauresmo is seeded fifth and will also have to play a first round match. Obviously, the seeds don't reflect the current rankings, as Mauresmo is ahead of both Dokic and Capriati--and I do believe Dokic has fallen below Davenport to number 8.
The draw will be out tomorrow--I hope Kim gets a decent one. I think we should be hoping her quarter is Dokic or Henin, as she should have a good chance at beating either. Her semi will be either Davenport or Capriati, assuming seeds hold (never a safe assumption these days.)
Hope that helps.

Just an observation--
Dokic had, until recently, a pretty good year. She played well, she won a few, she made finals, and she got to number 4. Recently, she's slipped in a few tournaments, and suddenly she's all the way back down at 8, with two finals to defend in the next three weeks. The fact that she's had, overall, a good year and is slipping anyway just goes to show how hard it will be for her not to freefall next year--the overplaying really just isn't helping her. If I were Jelena's advisor, I'd look at every tournament where Jelena crashed out first or second round this year (except for the US Open) and tell her not to play them next year. If she doesn't cut her schedule, she's constantly going to be in this rankings limbo.
Ok, I'm done. I really need to find better ways to spend my time than thinking all this stuff out.

LOL, some of the mens' outfits are a bit over-the-top aren't they? The combos with gloves, I find those particularly amusing.

Well... as a rule of thumb, Australians are only interested in sports if they are good at it, hence winter sports do not have a big tradition / following here...

Australia's very first Winter Olys gold came in speed skating this year. In the final, the first 3 out of the 4 guys collided and had a major pileup, the Australian guy was SO far behind that he had time to avoid the pileup and sail away to victory. But we're all still very proud of him.

Our second gold came in women's aerial skiing.... Aus does have a stronger representation here, we've had world champs etc. in the past.

LOL. back in belgium, we do that all the time. all of a sudden there will be a belgian who's good at some random sport.and since we're usually not good at anything, everybody starts watching it on tv and becomes a fan. i remember one year, we had a swimmer who was going to win a medal at (i think) the olympic games. so here we all are watching swimming screaming at the television to root our guy on while having no clue what is going on. Not that the rules of swimming are that complicated (obviously); it's just that everybody in that pool looks alike and it gets difficult to tell who's exactly in which lane. and then they end so closely thogether that you can't tell anyway.

LOL yeah.... I guess swimming is not really a good "spectator sport", unless the guy who wins does so by a large margin, it's a matter of watching them swim back and forth, then wait for a scoreboard to pop up to tell you who won! :p

Australians are swimming-crazy though.... for rather obvious reasons.

hmm... I don't know. I would guess maybe 30 majorly active pro players and 20-25 juniors.

Scotso
10-06-2002, 07:08 AM
Yes. ETA is much much bigger, but FWTT is more personal. We make up our characters, we don't use pro names. So, we can create personalities for them, and it becomes more than just a game. I enjoy it.

Scotso
10-06-2002, 07:11 AM
