In THEORY, aluminium would displace iron according to the equation:

3FeSO4 (aq) + 2Al (s) ----> Al2(SO4)3 (aq) + 3Fe (s)

However, aluminium reacts with oxygen in the air to form a protective oxide coating that is extremely unreactive. Therefore, in PRACTICE, nothing would happen, unless you got rid of the oxide coating first. This is actually the reason why planes (which are made of aluminium on the outside) do not dissolve when you fly them through a cloud! :o

If I remember correctly, Cu is less electropositive than Fe, hence it will not reduce Fe2+. Doesn't the ordering on the activity series imply that? Have I gotten something wrong?

The only thing your teacher might ask is why mutants/communists inside the US would be a threat to the US world leadership. To which you would obvioulsy reply that in the 1950's the US was terrified that communism would become popular throughout the world (undermining the US' leadership) and that as part of their quest to take over the world, the communists had infiltrated the US.

Just in case your teacher asks you to make that connection between the US world leadership and its internal affairs.

Hope that helps.

OK, the whole activity series business is basically an ordering of how much a metal likes having positive charges next to it.

Basically, for example, we would say that magnesium is more electropositive than copper. Hence it likes to have positive charges more than copper.

Consider the following equation:

Mg (s) + CuSO4 (aq) -----> ??

The CuSO4 in solution is actually in the form of Cu2+ (aq) + SO4(2-) (aq). Hence, the positive charge is on copper at the moment. When you add magnesium though, it has a stronger "desire" for positive charges than the copper, and hence rips them from the copper. What really happens is:

Cu2+ (aq) + Mg (s) -----> Mg2+ (aq) + Cu (s)

the sulphate anions just balance the charges (spectator ions) and the net equation becomes:

CuSO4 (aq) + Mg (s) -----> MgSO4 (aq) + Cu (s)

Now, consider the opposite scenario:

MgSO4 (aq) + Cu (s) -------> ???

The MgSO4 dissociates to Mg2+ (Aq) and SO4(2-) (aq) in solution. As we've said before, the magnesium has a greater desire for positive charges compared to copper. Hence, the copper will not be able to steal the positive charges away from magnesium, and hence no displacement occurs.

In the case of the example you mentioned, Cu doesn't have a strong enough "desire" to steal the positive charges from alumiunium, hence no displacement occurs.

Does this help?

What the hell was Fermat doing making up theorems before he knew they were right? :p

You are right, technically it should have been called Fermat's Last Conjecture. Fermat claimed he had a proof... he didn't write it down or publish it though, and mathematicians tried for over 350 years to prove the conjecture. It was only proven within the last few years (1995 I think) ... the proof was over 100 pages long, and took Wiles more than 7 years to do.

I am now convinced that I somehow have a treadmill jinx. For the second time in two weeks, someone on the treadmill right next to me, came flying off yesterday. I think it might be me. For some reason, some people forget rule number 1 of running on a treadmill: "Do not look around. You wil stop running in a straight line, causing you to fall of in the most spectacularly embarrsassing way." Yesterday I was (pretending to) just cruising along on the treadmill when this guy (it's always a guy) next to me starts running, putting the machine on a speed a little too high for his own good (such a guy thing). Next thing I hear THUNK, THUNK, THUNK and see all sorts of arms and legs flying from the corner of my eye (I know better not to look around). Result, unrecoverable embarassment. As I'm getting ready to go to the gym, I wonder if this is going to be a trend. Otherwise I am going to have to start warning people to stay away from me in the gym :)

well, it is a known fact that the only men I seem to attract are either profoundly weird or not very smart. All men I like, consider me "such a great friend." (remind me to shoot myself if i hear that line on more time). still, the sad thing is that the treadmill men aren't even trying to impress me (i have to admit that watching me labor trying to get through a 15-minute run is not a very pretty sight), they're after the pretty girls. So i guess there's some justice in them embarassing themselves:D

Aha! I've finally found a good song for Kim to sing to Lleyton :p

Helplessly, Hopelessly
Jessica Andrews
(Brett James/Troy Verges)

I can stand with the weight of the world
On my shoulders
I can fight with the toughest of the tough
I can laugh in the face
Of all my insecurities
Anytime, anywhere, anything
I'm strong enough

But when you're holding me like this
I'm carelessly lost in your touch
I'm completely defenseless
Baby, it's almost too much
I'm helplessly, hopelessly, recklessly
Falling in love

So let consequence do what it will to us
I don't care
Let the stars stand as witness to it all
Say the word and tonight I will follow you anywhere
I just can't pretend anymore
I'm too sturdy to fall

But when you're holding me like this
I'm carelessly lost in your touch
I'm completely defenseless
Baby, it's almost too much
I'm helplessly, hopelessly, recklessly
Falling in love

I am not afraid
I am not afraid

'Cause when you're holding me like this
I'm carelessly lost in your touch
I'm completely defenseless
Baby, it's almost too much
I'm helplessly, hopelessly, recklessly
Falling...
(Helplessly, hopelessly, recklessly falling)
I'm helplessly, hopelessly, recklessly
Falling in love
