The Davis Cup tie was great...and the Fanatics were there again to get the crowd fired up...but I don't think Lleyton needed it. You should have seen the reaction when he walked out on the court for doubles in his Crows jumper (it was in Adelaide and it's like their lives depend on football over there)...and he put it back on straight after the match and wore it to all the interviews

Jackie
09-29-2002, 01:06 PM
...Oh, and the funniest thing said during the tie:
After his singles match, Lleyton was asked about the doubles and he said Todd is the experienced doubles player, so he just does what he is told! Todd played well, but I don't think Lleyton needed any help

fcap
09-29-2002, 01:09 PM
Yehh Mum said the atmosphere was great!
:angel: Lleyton should marry the crows!! :p:p
LLeyton played such a good doubles match though!!

Hi Hannah! :) I'm good thanks! Haven't done anything much... I've been naughty, I should have done my taxes... but instead I've spent practically all weekend online..... also.. I've forgotten to pay my phone bill and it's overdue :eek:, I'll have to go into town tomorrow after lunch and do it then.

Hania
09-29-2002, 01:34 PM
Oh Allan *hugs* stupid taxes! How old are you btw?, I think I know everyone's age apart from yours. Life is so unfair, I DON'T WANNA GO TO SCHOOL TOMORROW! Don't schools in Aus break up soon? I wish I was theeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeee :sad:

Puss-in-Boots
09-29-2002, 01:36 PM
LOL... I am a bit older than the average poster here I think... I'm 22 years old... 23 in April. That sounds scary, I remember waiting and looking forward to turning 18 for SO long so that I could go out clubbing.... and that was over 4 years ago now. :o

Puss-in-Boots
09-29-2002, 01:37 PM

Puss-in-Boots

Puss-in-Boots
09-29-2002, 01:41 PM
The Lutheran Church of Australia? I'm not exactly religious, so I have no idea, and the best answer I can give you is, "It's a Lutheran church situated in Australia!" LOL :p *ducks*

Hania

So, if LL went to a Lutheran school does that mean he's Lutheran or do they let all Religions in?

Puss-in-Boots
09-29-2002, 01:52 PM
I'm not sure.....depends on how "hardcore" the school is I guess LOL

I've never attended a school that was affiliated to a religious institution, so I'm not familiar with how they work. Although... that LCA website, did mention schools... maybe they'd say something there.

Hania

WITH the number of outstanding successes across all parts of school life it is little wonder Immanuel College has produced a number of international and national sporting heroes in recent years.

Aside from world number one tennis player, Lleyton Hewitt and international tennis star, Jaslyn Hewitt, the school has taught Brad Tutton, from the Australian volleyball team and Sydney Paralympian, Christian Stafford. The rest of the school who don't compete on an international scene lead state competitions in AFL, gymnastics and perform very well in most other school sports.

I go to a catholic school where they only allow catholics in but not all schools are like this so, I dunno...

Erm, not really.... not for me anyway lol... I mean if the Canadians are playing against the Americans well of course I want us to win... like at the Olympics with hockey... Cu + Al (No3)3 = No Reaction

Cu + Fe So4 = no reaction
Fe + Zn (No3)2 = no reaction

And another question how do you know which elements take which form... like are they solid, liquid, gas ?

Pff... don't think you're dumb... the first trick to studying is to have some confidence that you can solve the problems, then to just go over your work carefully and see if you can break things up step by step.

If I remember my activity series correctly, you're fine. All five equations look correct to me.

About the state symbols.... well.... if it's just the metal on it's own you can assume it's "(s)". For these particular displacement reactions, you do them in water, so, for the ionic salts, e.g Zn(NO3)2, they are actually dissolved in the water so you put "(aq)".

For other types of reactions it's kinda down to intuition... for example, combining hydrogen and oxygen to give water:

2H2 + O2 ---> 2H2O

H2 and O2 are gases obviously... and since this reaction actually occurs at high temperatures, the water formed will be in the gas-phase:

2H2(g) + O2(g) ---> 2H2O(g)

On, the other hand, combining sodium and water:

2Na(s) + 2H2O(l) ---> 2NaOH (aq) + H2 (g)

The NaOH formed will be in solution in the water hence we put (aq).

Oops... I missed this earlier... this one is actually a tricky one. Al oxidizes from Al to Al3+ (hence the 3 NO3- anions associated with it), whereas Zn is reduced from Zn2+ to Zn.

You don't have to worry too much about this, if you just balance the equation normally, the charges will take care of themselves... so the equation should be:

2Al (s) + 3 Zn(NO3)2 (aq) ----> 3Zn (s) + 2Al(NO3)3 (aq).

That way the number of "NO3"'s is the same on both sides and all is good. :)

How far does the Alien Threat in X-Men act as a metaphor for American Hegemonical fears?

The movie X- Men directed by Bryan Singer acts as a metaphor for American Hegemonical fears. At the beginning of the film the main “threat” against American Society is revealed at a Press Conference conducted at Congress. The character of Senator Kelly states,

“Mutants that reveal themselves are publicly met with fear, hostility and violence” This quote in itself can be interpreted as a metaphor for the Threat of Communism in America and the period of the Cold War, how the Russians were revered and seen as an Alien Threat to the dominant hegemony of Capitalist America. The Mutants are represented as the main “threat” in the film.

Senator Kelly’s role in the film immediately connotes parallels and distinct similarities with the role of American Senator Joe McCarthy of 1950’s America, who led the public revolt against Communism. Senator Kelly like McCarthy uses the manipulative powers a political figurehead to influence the public. This poIitical prowess is highlighted by Kelly’s suggestion of the implementation of the Mutant Registration Act. Kelly whips up a frenzy in congress proclaiming how mutants are a danger to society, though without any concrete evidence to support his claims.

It is a case of the American society being afraid of what is not the “norm” Mutants certainly do not fit in as part of the dominant ideology.

The discrimination of the mutants in the film is addressed when Wolverine is asked to leave the Canadian bar, the bar owner tells him,

“Get out of my bar freak” The term “freak” is used as a cruel label against mutants. The use of “freak” is more likely than not used as a smokescreen to hide fear of those perceived as “different” from themselves.

This issue of the Mutants being seen as unnatural is an ongoing theme throughout the film as Senator Kelly asks Storm in his death scene,

“Do you hate normal people” in which Storm responds,
“I suppose I’m afraid of them” The use of the word “normal” is pivotal as well as problematic as “normal” connotes the racism and intolerance against the mutants in society. It begs the question do “humans” have the right to call themselves “normal” what exactly makes humans more “normal” than mutants?

The character of Magneto acts as an important metaphor for American Hegemonical Fears. He is portrayed as a megalomaniac dictator, the likes of which America have always fought to rid the world of, Hitler and Saddam Hussein being primary examples of problematic dictators.

The opening scenes of the film show Magneto as a boy being separated from his family in a Nazi Concentration Camp where his powers are first seen and harnessed. His hatred builds up throughout the following years as he himself attempts to enforce the concept of ethinic cleansing by planning to make Mutants a future part of the “new” dominant order in America.

Magneto looks for justification in Xavier’s actions to thwart his plans to avenge the witch-hunt of the Mutants when he proclaims,

“While the world is full of people who hate and fear you, and yet you’re trying to protect them” Magneto is disollusioned with Xavier’s passive approach and the X-Men taking up the role of the benign mutants.

Senator Kelly extenuates the dominant hegemony of America being the world’s superpower when referring to the upcoming UN Summit, Kelly states,

“We’re Americans, let the rest of the world deal with it their own way” emphasising how The USA perceives it’s dominance as the world leader, and the importance conducting things in the ways in which they see fit.

This is where there is fear of not being in control of their own destiny and having to relinquish control of power.

Magneto’s aim again shows parallels with to the McCarthyist Era. Magneto wants to avenge and punish the cruel and unjust witch-hunt of Mutants in the past. McCarthy similary used the concept of the witch-hunt to hunt down suspected Communists.

The story is set in New York and as Magneto prepares to strike the action takes place in the vicinity of The Statue of Liberty which is an iconic sign, which Magneto states is the symbol for “The land of Tolerance and peace” to which he dismisses immediately as being a complete joke, here his bitterness comes to the fore.

Oh, but Sarah Hughes is a really nice girl, Allan. My mom knows her and says that you just couldn't find a nicer person--and she's really serious about her schoolwork, as well! My mom used to have to arrange her schedule so that she could go to meets in elementary school. :)
But, yeah, it was sad that Michelle didn't win...I wonder if she'll stick around.

That's the worse thing about these big events.... they are so exciting when they come around and if your favorites win, it's wonderful... but if they lose, like you say, you're gutted...and then you have to wait 4 more years but by that time, your favorites might not even be around

It's over :sad: :sad: *breaks down in a fit of tears*

Oh yeah, Jilli, don't get me wrong... just venting... I mean, Sarah had the two triple-triples on the night and skated well and won and deserved it. It's just that Kwan easily deserves to be ranked amongst the (if not the) greatest of her generation but for this Olympic Gold duck.....kinda like Pete Sampras and the French Open kinda thing.... I'm just one hella frustrated fan. :(
