Okay, here's the narrative essay I wrote for my English class. Y'all have to promise not to come stalk and kidnap me. :p

One Day in the Life of a Newspaper Editor

When I was in elementary school, I looked forward every month to tearing open the copy of the Devine News that contained the latest edition of the high school newspaper, the Maroon Messenger. In my mind, being on the school newspaper staff was by far the most appealing aspect of high school, and I couldn’t wait until I would be old enough to join. My junior year of high school, I fulfilled my dream of becoming a member of the Maroon Messenger staff, and my senior year, I was even promoted to co-Editor. As thrilled as that made me, I realized that producing a newspaper is not as easy or as glamorous as it seemed in my childhood.

Getting the first paper of the year ready has never been an easy task, but this year, it was worse. Mrs. Petty had just taken over as the new Messenger advisor, and there were plenty of new underclassmen staffers who needed to be trained to write in the proper journalistic style. Returning staffers were stressed, trying to readjust to school in addition to shouldering more of the responsibility for the paper. With just four hours left to go before 5:00 P.M., when the Maroon Messenger proofs had to be dropped off at the Devine News offices for printing, the paper still wasn’t done. Casey Asher, our lone returning male staffer, was still in the process of writing the football story, and we were still without an editorial. As co-Editors, Kyla Perry and I were under added pressure to start off the year with a good paper, so we got out of our respective 8th period classes to go to the Journalism room and work. Once there, we spent a few minutes brainstorming and realized that, with the exception of what we were already covering, there wasn’t anything newsworthy going on in Devine. To make things easier on ourselves, we made the executive decision to scrap the issue’s editorial altogether and write a music review instead.

Kyla opted to review a punk CD, while I went for the old standby, country. Pleased with the fact that our impromptu creation was shaping up in true “Dueling Banjos” style, we worked in relative peace for the next half an hour, until 9th period began, when the Yearbook class began infiltrating our workspace. Luckily for us, with them came Mrs. Petty, who threatened to behead anyone who dared to disturb us. Thus reassured, Kyla and I were able to finish our reviews in a timely fashion, the only setback coming when she tried to place them into the Maroon Messenger template on the computer, which promptly froze. No stranger to that problem, Kyla merely jabbed the restart button and sat, seething, as the computer rebooted. As soon as it was up and running again, she placed our reviews without further incident.

School dismissed, but if Kyla and I thought we were done, we were sadly mistaken. Casey came in to work on his football story, and as he didn’t know a quarterback from a two-point conversion, asked me for help deciphering the stats. Like a good editor should, I paused in the middle of perusing the Original Lleyton Hewitt Website, and went to his computer to help him.
The first thing I realized was that he didn’t have the scores of all the four games the article was supposed to cover. Kyla—nicknamed the Hitlerish Nazi Editor due to her propensity for asking for her co-Editors’ opinions and then ignoring their advice--barked at Casey to go find them immediately. In fear for his future as a Messenger staffer, not to mention his life, he jumped out of his chair and bolted out of the Journalism room as fast as he could.

At this point, with scarcely an hour to go before our deadline arrived, Mrs. Petty received a phone call from Mrs. Haass, who reminded her about a meeting in the main building. This did nothing to reduce Mrs. Petty’s stress levels, and she hurried out, intensely annoyed.

For the briefest of moments, Kyla and I were alone in the Journalism room, and everything was quiet and calm. Then her computer froze again, and she let out a primal scream to rival that of Xena. As she struggled to maintain some semblance of dignity, Casey flung open the door and staggered across the threshold, panting and out of breath from having sprinted to the field house and back. He collapsed into his chair in front of his computer and inserted the scores into the article, then sheepishly informed me that he didn’t have any quotes from the football coaches. I considered throttling him, but ultimately decided against it, as the Messenger staff’s testosterone levels were already dangerously low. Instead, I paced around the room, gesticulating wildly as I tried to think up marginally believable quotes to attribute to Coach Bates.

A few expletives later, the football story was finished. Our other co-Editor, Megan Crain, arrived to help after being delayed because of a make-up Spanish test, and immediately made herself useful by placing Casey’s story into the Messenger template.

Mrs. Petty reappeared, having skipped out early on her meeting, and announced that we had less than 20 minutes to go until the deadline. After a cursory check of all the stories for typos, Megan hit the print button. Much to our stupefaction and frustration, nothing came out of the printer. It took a few more minutes—not to mention expletives—before Casey spoke up, saying that he’d noticed that Megan had selected the wrong printer. Needless to say, no one was amused, but we all put our exasperation on the back burner and started the printing process over again, this time on the correct printer. By this time, the deadline had arrived, and Mrs. Petty called the Devine News offices to beg for mercy. The staff member who answered wasn’t exactly sympathetic, but she did agree to wait a few minutes in the hopes that we could get our act together.

At 5:06, Mrs. Petty rushed out of the Journalism room, Maroon Messenger proofs in hand. Casey, Kyla, Megan and I waited for her anxiously, and tried not to kill each other in the meantime. At 5:20, when Mrs. Petty got back and announced that she’d made it to the Devine News offices in time for the Messenger to be printed, we all breathed a sigh of relief. The year’s first issue of the Maroon Messenger had been officially put to bed, and we were able to relax. At least until the deadline for the year’s second issue rolled around.

Well, i have a masters degree in journalism and media studies, but that sci-fi thing is tough. How about Independence Day? The aliens are threatening the US, its president, ect. Doesn't the movie end with people all over the world thanking the US for rescueing them from the evil aliens? So the aliens threatened US, but ultimately the US reaffirmed its hegemony by conquering the aliens. That's my two cents. Hope this helps.

Erm, sorry to butt in, but how about Mars Attacks for your sci-fi film? It's not really sci-fi itself; it's a spoof of all the alien films from the 1950s that were about Invaders from the Red Planet (Mars/Russia). But it picks out all the themes and shamelessly sends them up. (The aliens are finally repelled by 1950s country music which causes their heads to explode). Tim Burton made it.

General George Armstrong Custer:
Hero or Harebrained?

George Armstrong Custer, one of the best known figures in American history, lead a life that has been long glorified by writers and historians. His dashing victories were countered by devastating defeats and his military mishaps that by the will of God turned into successes were offset by his sheer arrogance and stupidity. He led a respectable yet torrid military career until his defeat at the hands of Lakota and Cheyenne warriors at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
After high school, Custer attended and graduated from West Point. He did not graduate with honor or distinction. Rather, he barely graduated at all, finishing last in his class. After his graduation, he failed to stop a fight between two cadets that led to his being court marshaled. His lack of regard for his duty most likely would have been rewarded with dishonorable discharge had the outbreak of the Civil War not called for all able men to join ranks and fight the growing threat of the Confederacy. This action so early in Custer’s career sheds a light on things to come. His disregard for order and his need for self-gratification would eventually be his undoing.
Custer fought well for most of the Civil War. Some would even say he fought brilliantly. However, most of his success came out of some great form of luck. Custer was terribly aggressive and usually sought to act before considering the situation. While often this type of action would end in defeat, due to the nature of the conflict, keeping your enemy off guard often increased your chances for success. His tactics did, however, cost an enormous amount of lives. It is wholly evident that Custer cared far more about his own position as a hero than he did for the lives of those under his command. He was willing to sacrifice them just to maintain a better position in the eyes of the people and his superiors.
In July of 1866, Custer was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the Seventh Cavalry. Later in that year he led his forces against the Cheyenne Indians, who did not hope to stand up to the military might of the United States army. In late 1867, Custer was court-martialed and suspended for being absent from his command during the campaign. Seemingly Custer believed that divine right allowed him to do whatever he desired. Somehow luck once again smiled on Custer, and he was able to gain a command again. Custer went on to redeem himself later that year when he defeated Black Kettle’s Indians at the Battle of Washita. Another simple victory that most first year cadets could achieve gained Custer the support of the higher-ups in the military.
In 1876, the United States government planned to finish off the Lakota forces with a three-pronged attack. Custer was almost not selected for the battle due to President Grant’s absolute disdain for the man, however, popular will forced Grant to allow Custer to join the campaign. Grant’s apprehension of allowing Custer another command was probably the most noteworthy element of his long career. Custer and the other two forces were to converge on the Lakota and Cheyenne Indians, trapping and crushing them. Custer once again decided to take matters into his own hands, and hurried his troops along, causing them to arrive in Lakota territory ahead of the other two forces.
Custer’s lust for glory led him to split his forces in two and lead an attack on an Indian village that lay within his sights. He wanted none of the Indians to escape death. His action was certainly that of a delusional power-hungry man. He took no time to weigh the situation and therefore received exactly what was due.
Custer’s luck had run out. Cheyenne and Lakota forces surrounded and decimated Custer’s band at the Little Bighorn. After the ruthless attack of these “savages” no man was left alive. The illusion of Custer’s brilliance was at last eroded to reveal the pure stupidity of a self-appointed hero.
Perhaps Custer did have the last laugh. Although his blunder cost him his life, his name lives on. Numerous stories, paintings, and poems have been written to commemorate his “gallant” stand at the Little Bighorn. This arrogant man, who in the pursuit of heroism caused not only his own death but also that of all his men, will live on in history forever.

I love this song :D

I am a man as a man I've been told
Bacon is brought to the house in this mold
Born of your bellies I yearn for the cord
Years I have groveled repentance ignored

And I have been blamed
And I have repented
I'm working my way toward our union mended

I am man who has grown from a son
Been crucified by enraged women
I am son who was raised by such men
I'm often reminded of the fools I'm among

And I have been shamed
And I have relented
I'm working my way toward our union mended
And I have been shamed
And I have repented
I'm working my way toward our union mended

we don't fare well with endless reprimands
we don't do well with a life served as a sentence
this won't work well if you're hell bent on your offence
I am a man who understands your resistance

I am a man who still does what he can
to dispel our archaic reputation
I am a man who has heard all he can
cuz I don't fare well with endless punishment

Cuz I have been blamed and I have repented
I'm working my way toward our union mended
And we have been blamed and we have repented
I'm working my way toward our union mended

Oh, Why you look so sad?
Tears are in your eyes
Come on and come to me now
Don't be ashamed to cry
Let me see you through
Cause I've seen the dark side too.
When the night falls on you
You don't know what to do
Nothing you confess
could make me love you less

I'll stand by you
I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you

So,
If your mad, get mad
Don't hold it all inside
Come on and talk to me now
But hey, what you've got to hide
I get angry too
But I'm a lot like you
When you're standing at the crossroads
Don't know which path to choose
Let me come along
Cause even if your wrong...

I'll stand by you
I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you
Take me in into your darkest hour
And I'll never desert you
I'll stand by you
And when,
When the night falls on you baby
Your feeling all alone
Walking on your own

I'll stand by you
I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you
Take me in into your darkest hour
And I'll never desert you
I'll stand by you
I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you
I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you
I`ll stand by you

Speaking of the Jedi, there was a census in Australia last year. It so happens that if more than 10000 people put down a certain religion, it becomes officially recognized as a religion in Aus and gets national funding etc. etc. So, some wiseguy started this email campaign asking people to put down "Jedi" in the religion section of the census. It got so big that there were census officials on the news telling us we should not make light of the census etc. etc.... I don't know if the campaign to get "Jedi" officially recognized in Aus as a religion succeeded... I suspect not.
