Mg (s) + Zn2+ (aq) ---------> Zn (s) + Mg2+ (aq)

Well, in a sense, the nitrate anion is kinda just there to balance the charges. It's known as a 'spectator ion' in these sorts of redox reactions. Was this what you meant?

math, yuck (sorry, allan). One time in college I had an oral statistics exam (yes, an oral statistics exam). I had no idea what I was doing because I had not bothered to learn the formulas by heart. So I started dividing, multiplying and what else have you with the numbers we were given until I got a result that I tought made sense and then reconstructed the formula accordingly. When I had to explain what I had done, the professor looked me blank in the face and said "You have absolutely no idea what you are saying, do you?" And then he gave me a 10 (out of 100), probably for effort. So don't worry about math, ana. You can't be any worse than me.

I'm almost pathologically lazy... when I first started grad school my research was experimental ( :eek: :eek: ) in nature... and I absolutely hated/detested/loathed/abhorred it... I wouldn't mind putting reactions on, but I couldn't get arsed working them up and isolating the product, don't even get me started on purifying the damn crap and cleaning the bloody glassware afterwards....

After a long period of putting reactions on and leaving them going for months because I couldn't be bothered finishing them off I ditched that project and moved to something computational....

I had two thesis advisers, the experimentalist and the computational chemist.... I am no longer on speaking terms with the experimentalist... wonder why? :p

Well... I think I made a very bad first choice... I was completely and totally unsuited to labwork. Computational chemistry wasn't much better, booooooooring, just collect lots of data and talk about it. Oh yes, and make pretty, informative diagrams. Sheesh.

Lucky I double majored and had math as well, so I've defected, and it suits me a lot more.... just loads of daydreaming and pushing points, lines and symbols around.

If you have the ambition, go for it! Grad school in the humanities would be extremely stimulating intellectually. Extremely strong culture of independence and originality. Sciences.... pff... these days Ph.D's are used as glorified cheap lab assistantships for faculty to get their dirty work done. :mad: I contemplated dropping out of grad school so many times, but I had to finish the damn thing so I can apply for permanent residency here so I stuck it out and wrote a damn thesis. It's currently being examined so I'm playing the waiting game... Ironic... the PhD after one's name IS pretty, but after I get it, I'd rather stack shelves at Safeway than do chemistry anymore.

The craze at the uni I'm at is "microscale" ie. do reactions in tiny quantities to save costs, reduce chemical and solvent waste etc. The drawback of course is that it's much harder to make spectacular explosions on those scales! :p

Gawd... experimental work was frustrating enough, but it was a nightmare working in microscale... if you sneezed at the wrong time you'd lose all your effing compound. :rolleyes:

They're everywhere. Crickets and those nasty little stinkbugs. They climb up the rough brick on the sides of the school and hang there, clinging. And then they get up into the lights and short them out, and then get into the air conditioning vents and dive bomb out onto your head. They hop around and wriggle their way into your bag, so when you reach in to get something, they crawl on you with their nasty, scratchy little legs. Every step you take, you crunch a bug. The sound and the smell haunts my dreams.

And the sad thing is, I haven't exaggerated any of that. They're everywhere.
