This is a play on the viva Chile chant that is always used when the Chileans play anyway.

So instead of viva Chile, it's viva Gaston.

I hope he isn't going to have too much fun in Viña then again for Buenos Aires :p this is only practice and it's great that the Chileans can watch him as well.

Why shouldn't he have fun  I have some friends going to Vina - I'm sure they would love him to have some fun there!

Viña Del Mar is a very easy place to get distracted. I wonder if Mrs Massu will be cooking for everyone.

Myabe the answer to Egg's question is the Hyatt or the Casion, though I am trying to confirm that this weekend.

Hey George, you seem to have lot of imagination...when I first read the title of the thread, I thought I had a squint!!!! Or maybe it's because I'm tired...
Anyway, I wish Gaston to have fun in Vina. He'll get good training for the BA event and that's all that really counts for me...

Ha ha, GWH! I love the title!!! :haha:
I DO hope Gastón has fun, as well as being paid lots of $$$. And it's great to get some clay practice before the ATPBA. Viña is a nice place - I was there last month when I travelled to Mendoza in Argentina via Chile (a fantastic trip, crossing the Andes near the Aconcagua), but the Chileans with their Chi-chi-chi-Le-le-le drive me wild. :nerner: I guess we're a bit more sophisticated over here, but honestly they're insufferable, and I've never forgiven them for what they did to poor Zabaleta's dad during a Davis Cup match, when he was hit by a flying chair! :smash:
Anyway, they love Gastón, and he was a great success when he played that exhibition match with Massú, a "Gran Gaudio" included!

That's a much better version of that chant... the original version really annoys me sometimes!

Vale, I feel your pain... I've heard that chair story. But you know, when Chile played against us (Venezuela) here, something like that happened, only that it was from our side . Not that I support behavior like that, and Venezuelans are usually peaceful in these situations, but I guess they were really on their nerves to throw a water bottle to Marcelo Ríos. Well, it was the dead rubber already, Chile had already won...

I heard about that too. Not too long ago at a pro basketball game, a fan threw a soda at one of the players- and a couple of players went into the stands to beat him up! Fan's get crazy. I don't think the soda thrower thought any one would go beat him up!

I don't have a problem with Chileans at all considering I have quite a few friends from there and I understand the problems between the two nations and the chants from the football that happen.

How is what happened in Chile a true representation of the people? It was a sad incident and it's past and Mariano has returned to play there again, but as long as Gaston plays there and the tournament is happy to have him that's the most important thing.

I've been to a film "The Motorcycle Diaries" to see how it is in Chille. ;) I could understand a few Spanish: "Vamos" "Que te parece & Que pasa (something like that)" - it's still a long way to go before I carry any conversation in Spanish.

The draws are out. Gaston plays Jiri Vanek (Cze) in the 1st round.

Gaston’s first match is on Monday ... You can follow the match here: http://portal.mega.cl/ -> "Señal Online"

I saw Gaston today, he was training in the morning about 2 hours ... One of the most funny and lovely moments was when a little girl asking to Gaston if he had his RG's trophy there, Gaston start to laugh and reply: "No, it's too small and I can lose it, but I always has the trophy in my heart" ... Sadly I can't took pics because I forgot my camara in home :smash:

Hey, we won! The Gato always starts tournaments in an irregular way... Today will be tough against Sánchez who beat him last year, but Gastón was going through his worst moment then, and I hope now he'll show him who's boss! The match is at 16 hs (19 hs GMT) and will be televised here by tycsports, so I hope to see at least part of it.

Here is the translation of today's El Mercurio article:

http://diario.elmercurio.com/2005/02/03/deportes/tenis/noticias/6288D4CB-0E29-4E43-AD94-743137B2D0D0.htm?id={6288D4CB-0E29-4E43-AD94-743137B2D0D0}

THE CAT’S FIRST SCRATCH

A diesel-fueled truck trying to start-up on an icy night. That is how Gastón Gaudio (8°) began in the Viña ATP. The “Gato”, seeded first in the tournament, had enormous problems to take the first set off Kiri Vanek (93°). Gaudio, slow and with limited reactions to the Czech’s ground-strokes, had to fight to win the tie-break 8-6, when the public were beginning to support the European.

The libretto changed in the second set. Vanek, suffering from a cold, started to become entangled in his own intent to play short points, and Gaudio, engine now running perfectly, managed to break him in the fourth and eighth games to close his triumph 7-6 (8-6) and 6-2. His next rival will be the always tough David Sánchez (76°) Viña champion in 2003.

“It was noticeable that it was my first match on clay this year, but I hope to start to play better. Now I will play against Sánchez and I hope I’ll continue winning to reach the final. And if it should be against González, that would be fantastic”, Gaudio commented.

What good news, we´re through to the QF.    Pity he has to play against Acasuso, but we have four Argentines in QF! :D

It was a good win, with various typical Gastón condiments. In the first games he got annoyed with himself and started cursing, but this time the umpire was a jerk and gave him a warning, and then in the fifth game, when Gastón said to himself “ What the shit are you doing?” the umpire warned him again, and Gastón couldn´t believe that was happening. He´s always very respectful, but this time he went up to him and said something like “What´s the matter with you, did you get up out of the wrong side of the bed?”. I don´t know what the jerk answered, but Gastón repeated it, and the man penalized him with a point. After that the Gato was forced to be careful, but when he slipped-up and cried out something, he immediately said “There, I said it. You can penalize me!”. The other funny episode was with this voice that kept saying loudly “Gastón, call me”. It seemed to be coming from among the public, just when he was about to serve. But then he had to interrupt the game and go to his bag to switch off his cell phone, the voice was his ringtone! :haha:

His game combined some wonderful shots with quite a lot he still needs to adjust, like his first service, but I think it´s just a matter of getting into the rhythm of clay tournaments again. What I liked is that often when Sanchez looked like breaking him, he´d produce an ace or a winner. He seems more cool-headed and in control. :bigclap:

This is the main part of the TyC article:

http://www.tycsports.com.ar/

The Argentine player beat the Spaniard David Sánchez 6-4 and 6-2. The Gato played a great match and his triumph was never at risk. Now he will have to confront a fellow Argentine: José Acasuso. TyC will transmit it live at 16 hs.

Gastón Gaudio, (8th in the ranking) beat the Spaniard David Sánchez (76th) 6-4 and 6-2, and is classified for the quarterfinals of the Viña del Mar tournament, with 380,000 dollars in prizes and ATP points.

It was made easy for the Argentine player to beat his rival and reach the next round of the Chilean tournament. The Gato´s powerful game and reliability proved too much for the Spaniard, who didn´t even begin to worry him.

Gastón won, but he wasn´t satisfied with his game. Acasuso played badly in the first set, and Gastón was great! :worship: Very sure of himself and accurate. 6-2, and everything seemed to be in favour of a two-setter. But I don´t know what happened to the Gato in the second set, he complained about the surface, with loose clay and unevenly watered, and he wasn´t satisfied with his game. Acasuso started risking more, and played very well. Gastón was warned because he said “What the shit is happening to me” or words to that effect. Not all that terrible...! I think the umpires are now waiting to catch him out, just like they are looking for foot-faults (none this match). In the third Chucho went to pieces, and Gaston wanted to win. But he will have to improve tomorrow against Ferrer to win!

Through to another final and I want to see that finals record improve in a way it would be easier if he meets Volandri than Gonzo, but he' s there now and has got there not playing his best tennis, and with that funny mobile incident. Now it's time to take some this title.

It's official Gaston will play Gonzalez in the final.

They have played once before on a hardcourt and Gaston win, but this is different as Gonzo is at home and has won this title twice before and the fact that Gaston is an Argentine will give the crowd even more reason to get noisy.

If Gonzo wants to around smack forehands to Gaston's backhand that's fine, the thing is as long as Gaston keeps very good length then he can do well, but if Gonzo is on, then it could over quite quickly.

Gonzo you are cool and have already won this title twice, so this year is not the year to be greedy. The other thing I like about this is that De La Pena is also Gaston's former coach.

Euro Millions - is it a kind of lottery? I subscribe to a bi-monthly lottery without any luck until now; but maybe next time I'll be lucky enough. ;) Some Japanese friends of mine play lottery, too, and if they win they'll comission me as a coordinator for, most probably, TMS Monte Carlo. Good luck to every tennis-freak who plays lottery!

Hi all! I´m late with the news and translations, (I have house-guests and very little free time) but here go my impressions (for what they´re worth!):

Gastón is in his fifth consecutive clay-court final!!!!!!!! :worship:

He is playing as if he finally accepts he´s a champion, not like in the old days when he felt he didn´t belong up there!
He still has unaccountable drops in his game, which means that he´s frequently recovering lost ground, but when he has to produce a winner he does so. His first serves are not working too well, but he had no foot-faults and his second serves are tricky to return.
He seems much more of an extrovert on court now, but he´s also giving in to tantrums (I´d hate to see him graduate as a Brat! The commentator, Bonadeo, who is very good and highly respected by the players, said “Later on I will try to have a quiet talk with Gastón about his shouting on court”). He broke a racquet and was penalized after having received a previous warning. He´s very dissatisfied with the state of the centre court, built specially for this tournament, which has loose clay and is unevenly watered.

The public was on his side, probably looking forward to the González-Gaudio final. González is a sort of minor Hewitt in the way he eggs on the crowd and celebrates his shots. I hope this atmosphere won´t affect Gastón too much!
Vamos, Gatito, you can do it!!!! :cat:

Glad to hear that he has improved his game technically and mentally.

Hi, I´m being good! :) I´ve just posted some translations for you. There´s another one I´d have to work on, but I´ll see if I can make it in time.

I have hopes for tonight´s match. Gastón really has shown excellent tennis, with occasional inexplicable drops in his form. But I´m sure he´s going out there as he did against Hewitt or Nalbandian in RG, and against David in the Copa Argentina, determined to win. He seems to be able to get over his frustrations and carry on with the job, so it will surely depend on how well González plays. Yesterday, after Volandri took the second set he went out to kill, and the poor rival didn´t stand a chance.

Btw, I´m sick and tired of seeing all these Gaudio clones on court!!! All his rivals are wearing the RG final shirt! And I think it was Ferrer who even wears his wrist-band the same, halfway up his forearm. It´s time Diadora designed a new one for Gastón and left the other for the clones.

There was a moment yesterday when the doctor had to attend Ferrer, and Gastón was laughing away on the sidelines. He´d go back to talk to semeone, and come back laughing again. Then the commentator said “He´s joking with the ATP representative”. It was good to see him relaxing during the third set of a semifinal!
VAMOS GATITO :smash: González. You can do it!!!

Choupi
02-06-2005, 09:34 PM
Vale, if Gaston's beginning to have clones as you say, it's because he's gained in respect... :D but don't worry, clones will never equal the original one... ;)

It's alright I don't believe the comments at all and yes he was shitty with the court, but he was good enough to deal with the conditions and win his 4th title.

Lets hope he can win a few more this year.

Nice pics. I think Gaudio wants to do very well at all the clay events he plays in. He made two clay finals last year after winning RG. He knows that he where he plays his best stuff and wants to make the most of the clay events. I hope he wins two more titles this year. I actually think he will win two more but I wouldn't complain if he won more than that. I just hope one is a clay master. Gaudio is too good to get disrespected and many are doing that about his RG win.

I forgot you are a trophy lover, but yes it's a good one at that.

He made 3 finals after Rg actually Båstad ( l Mariano), Stuttgart (l Cañas) and Kitzbhuel ( l to Massu).

Yes, he has the talent to do well on the hardcourts and showed some good things in Australia, but he does need to improve off the clay, but I think he is playing too many events before the big clay season.

I mean I don't care if people don't like the guy, but if they are that stupid to realise that he is one of the best players on clay at the moment, then no more can be really said.

6-3,6-4 - Gaston won!
Seems like he came back from 1-4 in the 2nd.

Looking forward to comments by those lucky people who have seen the match.

Congratulations, thanks, and please repeat the win at home in Buenos Aires, Gaston!Gaston showed a lot of variety in shot selection. It wasn't just two guys pinned to the baseline until one of them hit a dropshot. Nice volleying and net approaches. Gaston is really a rather elegant player who I only got to see on tv during last year's European clay court season. From reading this board I guess he has a long history of choking away matches, but he didn't seem to get down on himself at all as he was blowing many match points. He just kept plugging along. I admit to having a soft spot in my heart for Gonzo, but he was clearly outplayed today. :D

Well Gaudio can play very well and is one of the most talented guys on the tour, it's just that when he gets down on himself, he gets really down on himself.

My second mistake here  :smash:

Gaston was today in a tv show called "Mekano" ... Gaston didn't speak very much, but he said that he was coming to steal the title to Fernando Gonzalez ;)

Now that it's successful, please steal more

Congratulations! Gaston :D

I WISH, WISH, WISH YOU COULD HAVE SEEN IT!!!!

Please believe me, Gastón played marvellously, it was a fantastic match! From the moment he came on court, looking serious but serene and confident, I had a good feeling about what was to come. And González also gave me the impression that he had great respect for his rival, no more circus for him.

In the first set he was very accurate serving (over 70% of first serves) and he did everything well. But each point was fought out, they were both playing at the top of their ability, completely different styles of play but Gastón’s exquisite touch was able to counteract the other’s tremendous strength. Gastón was also playing with strength, but each shot was so varied that it was a lesson in tennis. There were very few errors on each side, and lots of winners, but perhaps González’s lower effectiveness in first serves gave Gastón an edge.

The second set showed a González who was determined to kill his opponent. He was much more aggressive and effective, and with one break in his favour he found himself 4-1. That’s when the cat became a lion! He won four games in a row, playing superb tennis. And suddenly, when it had looked like going to a third set, there he was match-point. He was unable to clinch it quickly, I imagine nerves had to do with it, but also that González was fighting back with forehand winners. However, the Gato kept his cool during all that unbearable tenth game (he was even seen laughing like in the fifth set of the RG final) and didn’t give in, until he dispatched the other with a wonderful shot.

He had six double faults (he’s risking more with his service) but no foot-faults, and he behaved like an little angel! Of course he didn’t have much to get frustrated about, but even so, when he lost a point he just accepted it as part of the game of tennis instead of freaking out. The only times he shouted were a loud “Good one” at the end of the first set, and again when he won the match.

I think this is really the new Gastón, who’s come of age and has great things before him! :worship:

Here is what another fan said

I watched the final on the tennis channel and Gaston did not say those things. Gonzo actually said he thought of gaston as a brother. Gaston actually wiped tears from his eyes at that. When he spoke he thanked everyone for a great tournament and Gonzo for the kind words. And thanked his coach. All nice. :-)

The discussion between Gaston and the stupid commentator was another day, wednesday or thursday if I'm not wrong

Of course that yesterday Gaston said nice words, but he refused to talk with the commentators, only did it with Marcelo Rios ;)

Well Gaston would talk to Rios, considering it was Rios who used to make Gaston look ordinary on the court.

He has played in Chile many times before and it seems the commentator was making some trouble, so no need to talk to this fool.

So glad that he won this title!!! From the small bits I could see of his performance during the tournament, I think he deserved it, and Feña is a really tough opponent (will never forget how he smashed my Venezuelan guys on Davis Cup) so I'm glad he went through easily. He seemed so happy, that just made my week :D

Here's to more titles this season :drink: ;)!
