Guadio and Verkerk are also probaly out. Tabara and Lu from alternate lists are playing in Kyoto, so they're out also. That's make 6 certain withdrawls. 7 more to go for Peter :)

I've looked for Mariano Puerta in the entry list and the qualy list and I cannot find him. Probably there's something I don't know about qualifying for a tournament, but shouldn't he be listed anywhere? I heard nothing about him being injured.

Puerta could be playing in Bogota instead.
Are u serious? Do u know he's ranked 60 in the Entry Ranking? (dunno if u're making fun of me or not, I just asked if anyone knew)

Fee
03-02-2005, 07:54 PM
Doesn't matter where's he ranked now, it matters where he was ranked on the day of the entry cutoff. For ATP tournaments, entry deadlines are 6 weeks before the tournament begins, for Challengers and Qualifying for Masters/Slams, its 3 weeks before the tournament begins. Look at the date of the very first post in this thread. Where was Puerta on that day? He may have chosen to play a Challenger instead of trying to qualify for a Masters for any number of reasons.

Thanks Fee, that was sthg I didn't know. Perhaps Puerta's entered a Challenger, I'm not sure about it. But that helps me understand some things. ;)

Subtle change here. Tabara has chosen to play the Kyoto Challenger that week and will not travel to IW regardless of his results there (had he lost by Wednesday, he would have been allowed to play the IW main draw on Friday).

Alternates are the next highest ranked players on the date the direct entry list is determined. When someone from the main draw withdraws, an alternate takes his spot.

The qualifying list is determined on a later date than the direct entry list.

Tricky_Forehand
03-03-2005, 11:30 PM
I was thinking Bobby Reynolds. It's logical. But looking at the choice of Flip & Young? Logic may have nothing to do with it.

I would like to see Brendan get it. Brian Baker gets so much hype...I would like some more opportunities given to Brendan.

Though, ultimately, I would like to see Alex B. get it...but that's not going to happen.

I was thinking Bobby Reynolds. It's logical. But looking at the choice of Flip & Young? Logic may have nothing to do with it. Flip is a former winner & part-time Cali resident; he's also one of the few non-Americans that is a "name" in the U.S. (even with his poor results as of late).

Real tennis fans know who Young is and are probably interested in seeing him, but I doubt his presence will really move a lot of tickets (at least until he starts winning). Young seems to be the USTA's chosen one. I wonder how many more wild cards he'll get with the way he's been performing. If he continues to lose by such a wide margin, it would be really unfair to keep on giving him wild cards at the expense of more mature young Americans (such as Scoville Jenkins) who perhaps could make better use of them.

I can't think of any "name" player who needs a wild card, so giving it to a young American (no pun intended) seems logical.

dbnumberone
03-04-2005, 06:58 AM
no way should young keep getting wcs when a)he's been smoked the two times he's played and b)considering how hard so many players from so many different countries work just to qualify, even in 2nd tier events

dbnumberone
03-04-2005, 08:00 AM
not that I'm rooting against young - lord knows I could use a few more exciting players so my buddies don't scoff at me for being a tennis fan, but it's obvious he's not there yet....

Indian Wells may be the first Masters event of 2005, but the year is starting off about where 2004 ended: With people skipping required events. Rafael Nadal, who won two clay events last month and then played Davis Cup, has withdrawn due to exhaustion.

The withdrawal means that Nadal cannot move above his current #30, and probably will end up several spots lower.
