MELBOURNE, Jan 25 (Reuters) - David Nalbandian has waited nearly three years for a re-match with Lleyton Hewitt and the Argentine baseliner could not have picked a better time to plot his revenge than Wednesday's Australian Open quarter-finals.
The last time the pair met was in the Wimbledon final in 2002 when a nervous Nalbandian crumbled in straight sets -- but this time the pressure is on the Australian.
The former world number one is a hot favourite to win the match but is carrying the huge burden of an Australian public desperate for a local winner of their national championship.
It has been almost 30 years since an Australian won the men's singles title in Melbourne and the pressure is starting to tell on Hewitt.
He has been heavily criticised for his exuberant on-court antics this past week. Past and present players have complained about his behaviour after Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela became so irritated that he spat at him and was fined $2,000 for unsportsmanlike behaviour.
Nalbandian, a Davis Cup team mate of Chela's, raised the stakes ahead of his clash with Hewitt by denouncing his actions but said he would not be intimidated.
"It's not easy when you have one guy behind the net doing that...it's not very good for the sport," Nalbandian said of Hewitt's pumped-up behaviour.
then in a possible semifinal perhaps he will can revenge of the semifinal of us open 2003 when roddick won him in 5 sets.
