Safin - China practice story (Very interesting) :)

Incase many of you havent read a post by jeff (tennis.info) i decided to post it here, its quite a nice story that he posted:

A lot of people I speak to at tournaments think that Marat Safin is boring, surly and bad-tempered. I happen to think that he is one of the most interesting people playing tennis!

Just to watch him interact with his opponent at the net after a match - win or lose - is to know what a 'nice guy' he really is!

I also hear commentators and others who are 'tennis experts' talk about how stupid he is. I was taking pictures of him practicing at the China Open last September (after half an hour of trying to persuade a growing crowd of 'officials' - obsessed with protecting the top players - that photographer credentials meant being able to take pictures of players playing).

Mid way through the practice, he stopped returning voleys at the net and wondered aloud what were the 'other' Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. He came up with three of them - the Pyramids at Giza, the Collossus of Rhodes and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, I think.

Justin Gimselstob, his practice partner, looked bemused but, finally deciding that practice was not going to resume until Marat was satisfied, suggested Niagara Falls. Marat looked at Peter Lundgren his coach who shrugged and wanted to talk about Marat's footwork at the net. Marat looked at me. I gave him three more. Play resued when we couldn't come up with the last one.

Now I am sure that there are many people who would regard wondering about Ancient Wonders in the middle of an important practice session before a big match as pretty strange. I am equally sure it would infuriate most coaches.

But boring and stupid? I don't think so! I happen to think it demonstrates an unsuspected complexity and depth of this interesting man.

I would love to know exactly what goes on in his head during a real match...

Thanks Joe!

He's not just interesting, but also intelligent. It sounds to me that he's eager to learn. He has the image of a bad boy thanks to the media, but in reality he's just a simple and nice guy.

yep, he is indeed very interesting and is actually a very thoughtfull, nice and intelligent young man.
Its a bit sad he has an image that is simply not true.

"the guy is amazing and he's not yet 25!" dixit Peter Lundgren in the second part of Andrea's siggy. :D

Well, I doubt that the image is entirely not true, but I didn't hear anyone (apart from some serious full-time haters) ever call Marat stupid or boring.

Thanks for the interesting story!

no one in China thinks he is stupid or boring. in fact, I have to admit that one of our commentators, who is an mid-aged aunt, love him very much! ;)

despite his tendency to oaf....and not use his brains sometimes during matches...marat is actually a pretty intelligent guy IMO......... as the lovely redhead jim courier says..."not as dumb as u look" ;)

Shadow
01-20-2005, 02:10 PM
yes, actually not using your brain during matches has nothing to do with intelligence u have, because intelligence is a thing you are born with but you have to use it and its just a mental thing he cant use his brain on the court.
Just when you read his interviews you know he is very intelligent and smart.

i mean when he talks about life and general things, you know. his knowlegde/view shows a lot of intelligence.
Not exactly talking about his tennis matches, sometimes he tells some confusing stuff. I think thats because he always gets the same questions and doesnt know what to say anymore....

Marat is a wise young man, that has always been apparent from his interviews.

Not many people can name even a few of the seven ancient wonders, since the pyramid at Giza is the only one still standing.

Yeah! That's why there's a new list of modern wonders including Eiffel tower, the golden gate bridge or the great wall of China. :)

And That's probably why Gimelblob named Niagara falls...considered as one of the modern wonders. ;)

Personally, I only could name The Great Pyramid of Giza, The Hanging Gardens of Babylon and The Lighthouse of Alexandria. :(
I'm not as smart as I think!

This is Colossus of Rodos. I know also the temple of Artemis of Efes and the Mausoleum of someone somewhere. The last one might be Alexandrian library, but I'm not sure.

WOW That story and this quote and his "missing the train for dinara" has definitely made me like Marat so much more.

Lundgren enjoys working with Safin. "He's very open, he confronts you," he said. "Roger was no problem, but he'd just suck it in whereas if Marat doesn't like to hear what I'm saying, he says so. But I'll tell him whether he likes it or not."
"He's a very interesting young man. He reads a lot, watches a lot of movies, he's always keeping himself busy. He knows everything about food, too - the guy's amazing and he's not yet 25. He's nice to autograph hunters, he's nice to everybody."

Marat is extremly smart, well read, and can actually think with his brain. I find him like a tormented artist. He has intelligence, emotions, passion. He is touching. He has a soul. He is not defined just by tennis. I think some say is dumb because they do not really understand him, because he does not fit the mold, and of course Marat probably did and say a few stupid things like every young man.

Marat is a lovely complex person, probably that is why so many of us like him.

lets not give Gimelblob the benefit of the doubt ;) I want to belive that he said that out of sheer cluelessness so I can laugh at him more :D

Everyone forgets the f-ing Mausoleum and the Pharos , I only know this cr@p off by heart because i had a greek tutor when I was young who was big into ancient civilizations and stressed on the importance of me knowing what the ancient wonders were, so that some day when someone asks me I'll be able to give them an answer. So far no one has asked me what they are, only Marat cares
