I don't think you need to worry about Rogi. After all, Marat was the one to destroy his defence of AO...

It will be v difficult for Rogi to defend his titles -- 11 is too much. I wonder which player defended the most titles in 2 consecutive years? Hmmm... interesting stat, eh?

Marat will be working on his revenge fr Dubai04 but this time it won't be a problem for him I think.

Ivan Ljubicic made a pact a few weeks ago that he is now dreading -- to play doubles in Dubai with Marat Safin. The Croatian will team up with the Russian for the first time in six years at next week's ATP tournament, and rubbed his head in amazement that he had actually agreed to the deal.

"Playing doubles with Marat, now that's what I call pressure," a wide-eyed Ljubicic said after reaching the semi-finals of the World Indoor Tournament on Friday.

"Maybe I made a mistake to say yes, we'll see. I've played with him a long time ago, maybe in 1997 or even 1998.

"He was very young, even younger than me. We played qualies (qualifiers) in Washington, when we were nobodies.

"He didn't want to play but I was pumping and said go on. In the last round of qualification, we played some guy named (Roger) Federer and (Sander) Groen. They were also very unknown but of course they kicked our ass.

"Then Marat said he was never going to play doubles again... before it was impossible to make him play doubles but he's improved a lot."

Although Ljubicic had fond memories of his previous partnership with the talented yet unpredictable Safin, it actually took place in August 1999.

Dubai will also provide the stage for Federer to renew his rivalry with his Australian Open conqueror Safin.

Safin pulled off a stunning five-set victory over Federer in the Melbourne semi-final from match point down before going on to win the crown.

Ljubicic believes his doubles partner now has his eye on Federer's number one ranking.

"Marat's now a very focused guy. He's going to give Roger a very hard time these days. I may be wrong but I feel he wants to be number one and when he wants something, he usually gets it."

TENNIS: Safin on quest to prise Dubai title from Federer

DUBAI: Marat Safin will try to prise away another of Roger Federer’s titles when the Australian Open champion and the defending champion line up at opposite ends of the draw in the Dubai Open which starts on Monday.

Safin, who saved six match points to beat Federer before taking away one of his three Grand Slam titles in Melbourne last month, is seeded for a rematch with the world number one in the final of the $1million Gulf tournament. If this happens, the Russian will hope to show the Swiss star that freshly-acquired mental strength is at least a semi-permanent addition to his volatile personality and should continue to bolster one of the most irresistible baseline attacks in the game.

Safin has often enjoyed the irony of attributing his improved stability to the help of Federer’s former coach, Peter Lundgren. More recently though he has suggested that personal development during a difficult spell in the wilderness helped him. Safin told Novosti, the Russian Information Agency, that the rough period during 2003 when he slipped to 86 in the world gave him time to understand “what regime and what schedule he should stick too.” The 25-year-old explained: “Each of us should find his/her own way despite its ups and downs. One needs to make mistakes and gain experience.” He added: “Media reports saying that I had health problems, and engaged in alcohol and even drug abuse, were of course unnerving, but they also made me stronger.”

The permanence of this strength could be tested by others besides Federer. The fourth seed in the Dubai Duty Free sponsored tournament - which is reputed to pay generous appearance money should be Andre Agassi, the charismatic former world number one, who is determined to prove that on given weeks he can still be a force. Another, less celebrated, but very special rival is Fabrice Santoro, a former Dubai Open champion, whose subtle, gentle magic and obdurate attitude has often driven Safin mad. These qualities have earned Santoro a remarkable 7-1 head-to-head record over Safin, four of these victories coming on hard courts similar to those next week. Santoro also feels inspired by his memories of Dubai.

It was here in 2002 that the Frenchman won one of the most astonishing finals seen anywhere, anytime. Flu-induced dehydration forced him to spend 24 hours on a hospital drip, and caused him to arrive in a wheelchair planning to say that he was too ill. He only played to prevent disappointment and could hardly run. Federer has had none of Safin’s problems with Santoro, but he too has special attachment to Dubai. It was here that he gained a unique reconciliation and two years of prize money after having it withheld for insufficient effort in 2002. It was here that he took a holiday to recover from last year’s post-Wimbledon exhaustion, and it was from here that he made the call to Tony Roche which led to the Australian becoming his coach. afp

Okay, I have no time for a big report, so here goes:

When I came to the club today at ten minutes to 2, the first person I saw was Marat (yesterday it was Peter). He was headed to the locker room, coming from the players lounge. He needed to do something before he went for practice with Tim Henman. I couldn't immediately follow him, because I needed to register at the reception myself. When I finally came to the locker-room, Marat was not there. I figured that he went to the men's room before practice, so I thought that I might have a long day too, and went there too. What happened next stopped me from talking with Marat before his practice. I opened the door to the Men's room and guess what... I think I banged Marat's butt with it. He chose a very convenient place to chat with another player...

On the center court, when Marat and Tim came onto it, Schuettler and Youzhny were practicing. Both were hitting pretty well. Misha has a band below his knee, but his leg didn't seem to bother him much. Later on, before Misha's second practice of the day, he'll tell me that his leg is okay and should last... He was definitely more positive than Sobkin, his coach.
** Miscellaneous note: Rainer and Misha seem to be good friends. Rainer calls Mikhail "Misha" and everything...
Anyway, Marat and Tim stretched while the two players were finishing their practice match. Marat then chatted with Youzhny a bit and with Youzhny's coach.
When he finally began the practice he was joking around in full force. He wasn't hitting the ball too well, but he didn't lose his sense of humour and stayed in good mood. At the beginning of the practice his serve was bad. He missed a lot serves (33% first serve in, I figure. Quote: "I miss ones, I miss twice, but I'll not miss thrice"). Henman told him to do it like he did in AO, or something, to repeat the times when it's been working... After serving an ace, terminating a series of misses ( he came to the net and said something to Henman there, after those misses) and said: "see when I think of the right stuff, it goes in... Joked about his serve when they started playing games as well: " I know that was a "turbo", but it's not my foult, it's the racket's..." -after hitting a powerful serve.

Marat's volleys were heavy today.
Dropshots were :o. Some bounced before they hit the net...
But he did have some good shots. He did always hold serve. Unlike Henman. Henman was broken atleast ones. But he wasn't great either. At one point, he bent down and it seemed like he has back aches or something. I don't know. I should have asked him though....

What else did Marat do on the practice with Tim... Hmmm. He smashed the racket to the ground, although the stupid thing didn't break. He swore and he talked a lot... :)

Right after the practice with Tim, he had a practice with Sauldering. He was avarage in there as well, although he would probably beat Kiefer with this game. And I still think that he can raise it easily. Anyway, he got a bit tired to the end.

Olli showed up for his second practice of the day, when the guys were about to finish. When he began his practice Marat started talking to him. Again, in the good mood. Asked him about his rankings and other stuff... :D

After this practice setion, I had seen Marat only twice the whole day and that was briefly. Once in the corridor, after he took a shower and all, and was heading to the players lounge and then, once afterwards when I was sitting next to the swimming pool and he passed by with some people joking and laughing... Btw. I'm pissed at myself that I didn't talk to him after the practice!

Other people whom I saw today: Rusedski and Sontoro... They were practicing together, but I didn't stay long enough to see how they were doing.
I also saw Robredo. He was hitting with his coach on the center court. Maybe it's because of his weak 'opponent' or whatever, but he looked a bit better. Didn't miss much... Looks like his shoulder is okay. Btw. after his practice I also couldn't ask him much. He grabbed a sandwitch and began chewing it. He was in no condition for a chat, considering the fact that he had to shrug to answer even to his own coach ...

I roamed around a lot today and I saw Lopez and Verdasco playing golf. THey made me take a pic with Verdasco.... Ferrero too was playing golf with his own gang... Sargsian played it too. Players are bored it seems, so they try to have fun at the club.

02-21-2005, 09:01 PM
Monday's (short, sorry ) report:

I arrived to the club at 3PM on Monday. Robredo was playing for one hour already, but MArat just started his practice... Unfortunately, I could not see Marat's practice, as it was held on a closed court, wrapped in a cloth from all sides. Becuase of that I went to meet Emily, who was watching Robredo vs. Olli match.

THat match was entertaining, in my opinion. Robredo played well, of course with ups and downs. I heared that he was 5-0 up in the first set, but then gave away the lead. But i wasn't surprized. Olivier also played well, with slight ups and downs. When Robredo played well and was beating Olli, I somehow took Ollie's side. I can't stand it when people get spanked by others, who are simply physically stronger (bigger).... Pitied Ollie a bit in those moments. But when he himself started beating Robredo I unvoluntarily took Tommy's side. anyway, it was a good match. Many interesting rallies. Some choking made it interesting, like it often does...

When the match was over, I left the Center court and went to the clubhouse... THere, in the locker room I saw an intersting sight: players watching last year's Dubai highlights. THey are all modest guys, but they didn't mind listening a few compliments from a comentator about themselves. Feliciano Lopez, and a few others didn't , atleast. It was funny. Heared a lot of jokes during this. :D I really felt like taking a picture, but i doubt that it's allowed in the dressing room/ locker room.
I almost headed back to the studium to watch JC play, but decided to check if Marat's still oncourt (I looked through a semi-transparent cloth). He was , and he was practicing with Sontoro. His practice was average. A few winners, a few mistakes... sort of a mix. Peter later told me that it was okay. He aknowledged the errors, but said that it was just a practice and that they happened "<only> sometimes". Marat was again in good mood. He teased Fabriece a lot. Everytime he forced the guy to run, Marat sarcastically said to him: "Fabriece don't think that you're still a teen <<don't run so much>>. You have a wife and daughter. They need you.<alive>" :)
Btw. Marat's practice lasted either 1.5 or 2 hours. I don't know if he began it with some other player, like he did the other day.
After the practice a lot of people wanted autographs. When Marat walked off court they all surrounded him. But he didn't stop to sign them, but instead signed while he was making his way though the crowd which was around for the 50 meters he needed to walk.

I'm falling asleep now, so, sorry if it doesn't make sense anymore...

Unfortunately I could not follow Marat after his practice, as I promised Emily and her mom that I'll be back soon to watch Ferrero. Too bad, because I wanted to talk to Marat a bit.
Ferrero's match was not bad, but not too exciting... JC played better than in practice, while Mayer also played well. Jc had lots of fh winners in that match, all landing close to the lines. I liked Mayer, because he has an interesting style of play. Unique...
Anyway, JC was good, but he wouldn't win a top-8 player quite yet... :(

After this match Emily left. I went and roamed around. In the locker room I saw Davydenko with an ice back on his upper arm. I wonder what that's for...

Janguei, after his match went for an electric massage of his right leg... For that , he watched tv with Younes El Aynoui. Pretty soon, Tim walked in a bit later, being friendly with Younes, asking him how he was...

Don't rememeber any other special thing from today...
I didn't watch Agassi's match for too long or too carefully. I don't like that man too much anyway... but he's not too bad anyway.
I was waiting for Younes to play against Rainer, actually. Poor Younes in that match! He couldn't play at all. Nothing worked. Nothing. He had no serve, no groundies (they were misses 90% of the time and very too slow). No volleys. :( I think he might consider retiring soon. This was a horrible match. I hope he doesn't give up though. He has THE BEST personality.
I was amazed that ,Younes actually broke Rainer's serve once. THat guy wasn't playing badly, but i still it was momentary lapse, I think. Younes had two winners in that game: he speeded up his shots... Plus, Rainer was playingaround with Younes, and sometimes his tactics of beating out the errors out of Younes ,and being overly aggessive failed. Not too bad though. Anyone would have got distracted against such a wek opponent.
Btw. this loss disappointed Younes a lot. He didn't even sign autographs... And I missed my chance to take a pic with him, I think...

i cant say i didnt expect this. Marat always stays Marat.

here are some views on the match:

kiefer played good, but nothing out of the ordinary..nothing marat couldnt have handled had he actually been in dubai today... he couldnt cope with kiefers serve, was always a step shorter and behind, couldnt deal with kiefer on the net... actually nothing remotely close to what we saw at AO... I really dont know the reasons...but he just played some average tennis with glimps of brilliance..had some great passing shots and cross-court backhands, but those were few and far between... shame...
Well, there is not much to say since I couldn't properly watch it.. I just saw a handful of points and it was not pretty.. He played a horrible tiebreak in the first set and like always kind of disappeared in the second set. He played one good game to break back but it was too little too late. I don't think this has anything to do with Kiefer as Marat just played very poor tennis and he could have lost to just about anybody with his game. Very disappointing but at least this was not a major or a masters series so I hope Marat won't get too down on himself and will recover.

Safin falls to Kiefer in Dubai opening round
Tue Feb 22, 2005 6:51 PM GMT

Printer Friendly | Email Article | RSS

DUBAI, Feb 22 (Reuters) - Number two seed Marat Safin was beaten 7-6 6-4 by Germany's Nicolas Kiefer in the opening round of the Dubai Championships on Tuesday.

Playing his first match since winning the Australian Open, the Russian never found his rhythm against an opponent who also won their previous meeting at the Toronto Masters last year.

Kiefer, who often came to the net, mixed aggression and a deft touch to frustrate his opponent and although Safin served well at times it was not enough to give him any advantage.

Neither player managed to earn a break point as the first set went to a tiebreak, which Kiefer dominated.

The German then maintained his momentum as the second set got underway, breaking to love as Safin struck his first double-fault of the match to fall behind 1-0.

A second double-fault allowed Kiefer to break again to lead 5-2 but he failed to serve out the match, putting a forehand wide down the line on break point.

When the German served for the match a second time he was able to seal victory with his eighth ace of the match.

TOO FAST

"I couldn't get comfortable on the court," said Safin, who refused to blame his defeat on the 10-day break he took after claiming his second grand slam title last month.

"I found the court was a little bit too fast so I couldn't really time the ball. I was missing a lot and wasn't comfortable at any moment," added the Russian.

"He's a tough one. All of a sudden he makes a couple of mistakes and he plays again and there is no rhythm at all. It's very difficult to find your game against him."

Wind had covered the court with a fine layer of sand and Kiefer said that made the surface faster, to his liking.

"I didn't expect to play this good," he said. "I've been here since Wednesday and was playing well but the last two days I lost a little bit of my concentration, my focus.

"But I'm very happy with the way I played. I was fighting. It's all about confidence, and this win was pretty important for me. I've had tough draws the last few weeks and I was close but I never made it."

Kiefer said nerves also played a part as he struggled to close out the match.

"I think it's quite normal that you get a little nervous," he said. "I just tried to focus on my game. I didn't serve so well in the beginning but I could get through the games and that is very important, especially against these players."

Another article:

Safin out in first round
From correspondents in Dubai
February 23, 2005

MARAT Safin suffered a stunning let-down overnight, losing his first match since taking the Australian Open title from Roger Federer.

Safin was beaten 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 in the first round of the Dubai Open by unseeded German Nicolas Kiefer, who produced flashes of the form which took him to world No.4 a few years ago.

Safin's performance was not so greatly below par, but it was evident from the start that he was likely to be presented with a tough challenge from Kiefer, who served at his best, frequently volleyed resolutely and mixed up the paces of his drives cunningly from the baseline.

Safin blamed the defeat in part on the time-out he afforded himself after his Australian Open win.

"I decided to take a long time off after the Australian Open and regroup and, of course, the first match back isn't easy.

"I don't have to regret that too much but, of course, it takes time to get used to competition again," said the Russian.

The crowd spent much of the first set chanting the popular Safin's name, but he was rarely able to get a handle on Kiefer's second serve, the most obvious area of attack.

Safin's demise came despite having claimed - the previous day - that he had spotted a marginal weakness in Federer's game, and thought he knew a way to beat him again.

They will now have to wait indefinitely for their next meeting which had been eagerly-anticipated for Sunday's final here.

The first signs of trouble came when Kiefer struck a sweet counter-hitting forehand to win the first point against serve in the tiebreak. It fired him up to a series of great ground strokes which brought two more mini-breaks and guaranteed him the set.

He maintained the momentum early in the second set, breaking at once with the help of an impudently stolen point from the net and a double fault on game point from the second seed.

After that Safin began to fret more, gesturing his irritation and rocking his head in frustration and defeat became more likely after that.

The real question then was whether Kiefer could digest the large prey which was coming his way. He failed with his first attempt to take the match but at 5-4 made no mistake, serving steadily, mixing up his forecourt and back court tactics and finishing with an ace.

Earlier, Spaniard Feliciano Lopezz opened his campaign with a 6-2 3-6 6-3 win over Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan.

"I always play well here (Dubai)," said Lopez. "I like coming to the net and this is the way I have to play. I think I volleyed well, especially the last point when I made a great volley."

Uhmm Marat sends a sign to all his fans.."I'm still normal, the good old Marat!"
It was the first match after AO after a long break as he said and he played well. Maybe he didn't have so much spirit to fight. I'm okey with it? (interestingly) Maybe coz I have to study :p
And, what is next btw? which tourney...?
