Uhmm Marat sends a sign to all his fans.."I'm still normal, the good old Marat!"
It was the first match after AO after a long break as he said and he played well. Maybe he didn't have so much spirit to fight. I'm okey with it? (interestingly) Maybe coz I have to study :p
And, what is next btw? which tourney...?

I believe the next tournament (apart from DC) is Indian Wells

Well yeah... :) I was furious (cause he lost) first, but now it's ok. :) It's just that he won everyone in AO (I got used to it  ) and it's so strange now he suddenly lost one match! (DUH, he's the God, he can't lose! :worship: ) It felt like someone had stabbed me... I'm like laughing to myself now. Everyone loses sometimes. Even my Marat.
I luv him! :inlove: Good luck Marat for the next tourney!

I really don't want to write a report. I feel more than a bit inside-out now. Anyway here goes...

I did not see Marat before the match today, which is a bit strange. Usually I see players well in advance before their matches. I planned to talk to him then, but as you can see, I couldn't do that. I couldn't wait for him in the club-house as well, because Youzhny was playing... Anyway, that doesn't matter.

Marat's match was horrible. Simply horrible. Reminded me of Younes. pfff. He could not hit a powerful shot for more than two times in a row. Otherwise it went out. I actually can remember only two winners from the baseline! One of them was an angry cross-court backhand passing shot in the game in which he broke Kiefer. THat's all. He had winners at the net, but really he had TOO MANY errors. The match was painful to watch. Only the serve was generally good. Ground-strokes, according to my notes, were okay to good only in 4 games of the match. Otherwise it was a disaster.

Kiefer played reasonably well in the match. But if really... Nothing even Youzhny wouldn't be able to handle. Marat just needed to 'appear' in the match.
He did have an 'appearance', but only in the last 2.5 games of the match... THere he really started to fight. THere he was aggressive and the balls went in, unlike in the TB, in which he was aggressive but all went to hell. With the little help from Kiefer (DF) he broke the guy at 5-3. He had a nice service game after that, and played okay in the last game. But let's face it, the probability of breaking the serve of a well-playing professional is low and that's how it went. Agh.

He wasn't aggressive enough in this match in general, I think. I could understand him because his groundies really didn't work much. In the 5th game of the second set he tried serve-and-volleying twice. If I remember correctly it didn't result in anything too good. I somehow felt that he didn't have confidence in his baseline game and was anxious to go to the net...
His returns were not good in the match, as well.

When the match ended, I somehow didn't even look in the court's direction and just walked (ran) off the studium. So I didn't see Marat's reaction to the loss. I was very angry and sarcastic in that moment. Of course it soon changed into extreme sadness. I felt almost physically ill and my heart almost hurt... I went online right after the match, but soon decided that I need to see Marat in the locker room. Seeing him helped me somehow. Anyway he was sitting with his team right there and discussing the match. I heared a bit and i think that Marat's weight was mentioned, although I'm not too sure. Peter was like: "are you sure it is the legs and not the weight?" or something maybe similar... I didn't hear much else. Marat talked to two people on the phone then... Anyway... Marat wasn't TOO sad, but it was visible that he was disappointed.

Then Marat went for a massage, I think. Before , or maybe after it (i don't remember, sorry) he talked to Ljubicic. Ivan also speaks Russian ("also" because a number of guys do: Stepanek and maybe even Hrbaty) and he asked about the score. Marat answered that it was fucked-up. 6-7 4-6... Then he complaiend about the balls - "we play with balls which are too small": "golf balls", and said stuff about them flying around... Btw. in his first practice in Dubai, he said to Henman:"the balls are flying, huh?". I don't know how far that was an issue though. Anyway, atleast now we know that MArat is sincere in his complaints to the press.... He tells to his friends the same thing as to us...
Btw. I think that Marat plans to lose the doubles... I might be wrong but here is what I MIGHT HAVE heared from Marat's. Ivan asked him either "when are you leaving??", which could have been : "where are you (we) play tomorrow?"", actually.... Could have sounded same in Russian. Marat said "after tomorow", so make your conclusions.

After Ljubicic left, I asked him to sign a poster for me. He did. I didn't talk to him though, because I wasn't in the mood and I didn't know what to talk to him about (especially after he just lost). I got the feeling that he wasn't in chatting mood either.

When Marat finally, after the massage, went to the shower I threw that necklace I talked about, into his bag. I don't know if he saw it... Or maybe he took it out and left it in the locker room thinking it just fell into his bag. I didn't want to give it to him personally, though. Too shy. If he asked me if it's mine i would have said "yes, but it was not my idea" ( would have blamed it on you girls.... ;) ).

After he left the dressing room, I asked him for a pic with me. He agreed again. That was the last I saw of him before leaving the club.

Random notes: During the match I yelled to him about 10 times. The first was in Russian, saying: "come on gradually wake up", which was at 2-2 in first set. I also shouted "come on Kiefer" when Nicolas lost a few points with errors... Those points should have been his by winners (MArat was too passive then) , but he netted them...

Marat was calm during the match, although it's too bad that he wasn't mad. Maybe racket throwing would have helped. Otherwise it looked too .... pitiful(?) to me... Sort of silent acceptance. Although he did have the body language...
I know who the Asian guy is, that you saw on pics: he's the new physical trainer of Marat. I asked him that after the match. His name is Doctor Dan, or something... He's also nice: I spoke to him only after he smiled at me while passing me in the corridor. I don't know how good he is though...

I truly hope Marat still has the necklace.

I've seen Marat shirtless on tv a few times now and he could be too fat. Peter was asked how he thought Marat would do against Kiefer and he didn't want to answer. All he said was we'll see. A coach confident in his pupil would say something like: "He's in form and should be able to.....", but not Peter. It could have meant something.

He was just on tv again. It's all pre-match stuff. My mom joked that he doesn't look like a Muslim and that she should go and ask him if he wants to marry me. She thought he's married cause of the ring on his necklace and when I said he wasn't she wondered why I thought I knew it. Of course I remained silent. ;) I told mom to shut up during his interview and once again my family gave me a weird look and must have thought I'm crazy.

You guys might not believe this. But, I had a dream that Marat lost in the first round and woke up at about 4AM in the US. I didn't think anything about it until just now. I saw the score when I got back to my computer a couple of hours ago. But, I wasn't too upset. I know Marat will pick it up.

Kiefer ousts Safin from Dubai Open :(
February 23, 2005 - 11:09AM

Marat Safin, playing his first match since winning the Australian Open three weeks ago, was beaten in the opening round of the $US1 million ($A1.3 million) Dubai Open, eliminated by Germany's Nicolas Kiefer 7-6 (2), 6-4.

Safin looked sluggish and was admittedly uncomfortable against the 30th-ranked Kiefer.

Kiefer "was playing the kind of game that doesn't give you any sort of rhythm," the second-seeded Russian said.

"Chipping and charging, slicing and spinning and changing the power."

Kiefer, the 2000 Dubai champion and a two-time finalist in the United Arab Emirates, earned grudging applause from a capacity crowd, which overwhelmingly supported Safin.

"It is never easy against Marat," Kiefer said.

"He is one of the top players in the world and has just won the Australian Open. So yes, I am very happy with my game today.

"I started a bit slowly in the first set but then I started getting my serves in. It is important to serve well against these guys."

Safin never appeared in control and credited Kiefer for capitalising.

"Kiefer has a lot of experience. He saw I wasn't very comfortable on the court and he seized the moment," Safin said.

"The ball was flying a lot and the court was a bit fast I couldn't find a grip on the ball. I kept missing and was a bit too careful with the ball."

He denied the suggestion that a lack of match practice was to blame.

"If I had played a few more matches, who could have guaranteed that I will win?" he said.

"It is just the beginning of the season and there are many tournaments to go."

Earlier, Spain's Feliciano Lopez eliminated Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand to earn a second-round clash with American Andre Agassi.

Lopez exploited an ailing Paradorn, who was hindered by a fever, to win 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in one hour, 43 minutes.

Lopez, who was beaten in three sets by Roger Federer in the 2004 Dubai final, was eagerly anticipating his match with Agassi on Wednesday

"It is going to be an exciting match," Lopez said. "It's going to be a great match with packed stands and a great atmosphere.

"It is one of the matches that I have always wanted to play."

In other matches, three of Safin's Russian compatriots advanced. No. 7 seed Mikhail Youzhny beat Thomas Johansson, who reached the semifinals at Rotterdam last week, 7-6 (3), 6-1; No. 6 Nikolay Davydenko eliminated former Dubai champion Fabrice Santoro of France 6-3, 6-0; and Igor Andreev beat qualifier Marco Chiudnelli of Switzerland 6-3, 7-5.

Safin ousted by Kiefer

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) - Marat Safin of Russia lost to Nicolas Kiefer of Germany 7-6 (2), 6-4 in the opening round of the Dubai Open on Tuesday, dropping his first match since winning the Australian Open three weeks ago.

Safin looked sluggish and was admittedly uncomfortable against Kiefer.

Kiefer "was playing the kind of game that doesn't give you any sort of rhythm," the second-seeded Russian said. "Chipping and charging, slicing and spinning and changing the power."

In the match of the night, Tim Henman beat fellow Briton Greg Rusedski 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4 after saving a match-point in the second set.

Safin said a lack of match practice wasn't to blame.

"If I had played a few more matches, who could have guaranteed that I will win?" he said. "It is just the beginning of the season and there are many tournaments to go."

In other matches, Feliciano Lopez of Spain eliminated Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to earn a second-round matchup with American Andre Agassi.

"It is going to be an exciting match," Lopez said. "It's going to be a great match with packed stands and a great atmosphere. It is one of the matches that I have always wanted to play."

Seventh-seeded Mikhail Youzhny beat Thomas Johansson 7-6 (3), 6-1; No. 6 seed Nikolay Davydenko eliminated former Dubai champion Fabrice Santoro of France 6-3, 6-0; and Igor Andreev beat qualifier Marco Chiudnelli of Switzerland 6-3, 7-5.

....I thought it was irony.I think I missed that. But you know, now that you mentioned it, I remember another interesting tidbit I stumbled upon right after the AO. I don't know if it was here or not, but it was an article abt Walt. The journalist claimed that he/she were sitting next to him on their flight from Melbourne and, naturally, was asking him abt Marat, and Walt wasn't exactly heaping up compliments. He said Marat was lazy in his training, smoking, drinking and womanizing, not listening to anyone, all that jazz. He backpedaled somewhat in the end, saying that different athletes need different kinds of preparation, but it left me confuzed. Regardless of the truth of Walt's words, that wasn't exactly the attitude you'd expected from a loyal team member, and all the more odd, it came right after the big win. At the time wrote it off on the journo just making up stuff to sound original, but now I'm wondering...

Wow.

I was hoping for a much better result, obviously. I mean, if he was going to lose, at least lose it in the third game!

Hopefully, he will bounce back in Davis Cup.

Thanks Vass, for the reports and the photobucket pics. Without you guys who are able to see him play live either in person or on tv/internet, I would never get to see him in tournaments other than grand slams!

About the new trainer...

If Marat doesn't commit himself to fitness, it doesn't matter who's training him! I hope he got a wakeup call this week! Winning the Aussie Open may be a big deal, but consistency is much more important.

Ask Roger.

Mwahaha RogiFan, looking at the pics and based on the discussion Vass heard Marat has gained weight in the last 3 weeks and hasn't got back to super shape yet. He can be super fit though yeah.
As for Rogi - he didn't have the need to work on his fitness last year. I'm sure he will work on things now. Poor Rogi - losing a set and everyone screaming...

Well, there wasn't too much space to run around. And I bet it was scary. Roger told me that "it was scary at first, but then you get used to it", but i think he wasn't entirely honest... :D

I got the feeling that it wasn't his fitness. Pure mental chaos in that match, I think. I start to doubt that he has extra weight. Maybe he's heavier by 1 kg after 3 weeks without playing, but it's nothing serius... Holiday weight. It couldn't have hurt his game....

I don't see a difference.. (but maybe that's just me)
Of course, if you normally run for 5 miles everyday and then suddenly stop for a couple of weeks your fitness drops fast.

I think it's a bit of the former and a bit of the latter. Marat is human, that's all. No human can be nice and charming and affable all the time and no one can be a jerk all the time (ok, some people can, but that's difficult). He can be nice to some people and an asshole to the others. He can be nice *and* an asshole to the same people in different times. And even in the same time. He can pretend to come people, for reasons that we'll never know. The bottom line, he's human - a complex beast that we'll never figure out, because, honestly, we don't know him at all.

Not that surprising really considering the expectations and pressure of 2 great yrs are finally catching up w Rogi. That's all. Besides, he doesn't play well vs. unknown quantities. He actually plays better vs. top players, like Marat. No offence taken. ;)

Not the first time he did that. Last year in AO, while Marat was winning one match after another, Walt was telling journalists that he had done a good job with Marat in December in Monte Carlo, and that they were still working hard during the tournament, that's why Marat was playing so well.
And when Marat lost the final against Roger, and explained in press conference and also uring the ceremony that he was too tired, Walt told journos that Marat lost because he didn't listen to him. He explained that after each match Marat had been jogging for something like 30-60 minutes. But that after the semi he was very tired and told Walt he didn't want to jog, that he had already been running a lot during his semi and his quarter. And i remember Walt told the press that he disagreed with that decision, and that he told Marat to go jog, even with Dasha if that could help him ;) but Marat refused, and so Walt was convinced it was because of that decision that Marat had been too tired in the finals.

Sorry that my report is late. I'm lazy, was sleepy and was catching up on the forums before.

I arrived to he club at 3 PM, like I always do after school and after signing in went to the locker room to put my gym bag there (and sniff around for the players). I saw Peter and Dan on my way: Peter was walking with the rackets and some balls so I figured that I just missed Marat's practice.
In the locker room Marat, Igor Andreev and a couple of more players were leaning on the lockers and starring in the tv, watching Davydenko's match on Center Court. They were also talking to guy around them, of course. I had no choice, but to hang around 'with' them and stare in the TV myself, looking around, of course. Listening. Intently. They were all in a pretty good mood. Marat was preparing to go to a nearby giant shopping mall with one Russian member of my club, who, as it turned out to know every Russian tennis player realy well. It's hard to tell you all that has been said in there, and it's unimportant realy...
Anyway, all this continued for atleast 15 minutes. Marat went about the regular after-practice/after-match business, came back, talked to players which came in, and stuff like that. Talked to Verdasco a bit in Spanish... Talked to Rochus, I think, Younes, who just came in froma lost doubles match.
People like Younes very much as well. So do I. He even remembered me from our previus conversation and said hello. I replied and asked him if the doubles match (with Behrozian, btw) was any better than the last singles match. He smiled and said:'yes. By one game.' I figured that it's okay. Considering the ranking of the guy he was partnering and their very tough opponenet's winning two games at this stage of comeback is good... :) Btw. Marat asked where Younes is going next- Miami.

At one point of my dressing room epic Marat was talking on the phone with someone. He talked about tickets or something. One thing which gave me hope about the day's doubles match was how he said with feeling: "if I fcuk up today's match I'll be flying on thursday". I couldn't believe that can tank a match feeling this way...
Meanwhile, a lot of other thoughts were going wild in my head: will I ever talk to him? THAT time seemed a very good time, but he was talking to players; dressing up; I was shy; I didn't have the slightest idea what to say to him, what to talk to him about. I still think that I have nothing to talk to any player about. Realy. Only brief questions, which are stupid. P.lus, I was thinking about going to the shopping mall after Marat, to stalk him. Or even better: ask those guys to take me with them. :o THank God, I didn't do any of that and allowed him to walk off. Davydenko's match was soon over so I went out to meet Emily, see Robredo, other matches...

Robredo was playing pretty well. Berdych, whom I was watching for the first time in my life, wasn't too good. All I can say is that it was a good match from Robredo. After it finished I took a picture with him.

At the same time, Ljubicic was playing. He wasn't too good, so I got a bit wooried about his doubles. He's tired, I guess. Atleast you could tell it a bit later.

Next, I watched the beggining of Schuettler-Youzhny doubles. Misha was not good. He could not realy return. Rainer was better than him, but wasn't brilliant as well. I hope Misha improves for tomorrow's singles.

Then I went to the center court to watch Federer. Roger was not great in that match. But he was in some relative control. Minar, of course, played realy realy well. Some rallies were very interesting. They both had winners, those from Minar were amazing. But, I couldn't ignore Rogers' errors as well. Too bad for Minar that he lost and kudos for Roger for fighting. (Btw. before the match I asked Roger for a pic with him. it took 3 attempts to take and it still was blured and got accidently deleted later. :o I also asked him if it was scary to play on such a height and he said : "yes, in the beggining. You get used to it later" ;) . He was realy nice).
I just wanted to add: during Federer's match me and Emily saw Verdasco betting with some Haitian guy on the outcome of the match. It was realy funny to look at, considering that the match was very unpredictable. After each point they were pointing at eachother and smiling sarcastically (they sat at some distance from eachother). Eventually Verdasco won.

After the match was over I went to see the end of Youzhny-Schuettler match and a bit of Andreev- Davydenko. I went to the dressing room after that. Marat was already back and was talking to players... Roger was there, happy, too. I was realy akward standing there that time. It was obvius why I was standing there, I think (to see players) so it was embarassing. I realy thought that I'll never talk to Marat :( . I kinda felt that it wouldn't give me anything special, anyway. Being 'among' the players is special by itself. And listening and not talking is what I do even in a group of freinds....
I went and sat in the corner, thinking of what to say to Marat if I'm to have a chance to talk to him. It took me 20 minutes. And even then I had only three topics in mind. At some moment Marat was left alone... And I crept towards Marat slowly and not surely. I talked to him. I'll tell you only one thing, because the rest is embarassing: "how was your shopping mall trip?" and stuff related to that. He said, "okay..." He bought a new watch, although I thought that marat was taken to look at the antique section .... (anyway, now that I think about it, and now that I read Marat's view on going to social occasions and 'smiling' in there, I don't think that he actually enjoys talking to fans like me... That left a small shadow on the stuff that happened).

I went to do something else then, maybe watched Youzhny-Schuettler doubles, for instance, beacause i don't realy remember the order of events. Or I sniffed around. Probably both.

Anyway, about Marat's doubles match (I wrote the following for safinator):
HE DID NOT TANK. He was VERY GOOD. His return was great, groundies were good, volleying was great... Ivan's backhand repeatedly let them both down though, and Ivan's return of serve... He sometimes (especialy in the second set) played like in singles: he was the one who played the majority of the points (and it was the time when they both stood back at the baseline) even when Ivan could have taken it. And he did it realy well. Only in the last two games it went a wronf for him. He Contnued to do that, but he missed a couple of balls... THey lost Marat's serve on 5-5 in the second, with Marat double fouldting (again, pfff), but it was realy okay. Ivan lost the other 3 point in that game, while Marat lost only that one. Good effort by Marat. Toooo bad that he didn't play singles like that!

After the match I couldn't go to the locker rooms directly. I had to hang in another place a bit... So I didn't see his emmidiate response. My mom saw him in the corridor though and she didn't think that he was too happy.
I went to the locker room after about 15 minutes. He was still there. Nothing special was happening. But he was alone, so I went to him one more time and asked when he's leaving. He said: tomorrow morning. That's too bad. I hope he comes next year.

That's almost all that happened to me all day..

B) I'm a member of the club, which hosts the tournament. I don't know why they don't kick out the memberes for two weeks in a year though... I guess they want to create a unique opportunity for us. But it's awesome. It's amazing that the club is not all that expensive.

I don't know if it was here or not, but it was an article abt Walt.

Vass, thanks for the awesome pics and reports :worship: it's cool that you got the chance to speak with Marat and you took it, when I saw him I knew I HAD to speak to him otherwise he would be gone in an eyeblink and I would never ever get that opportunity again..I had NO clue what to say, so I did the first thing that came to my stupid head and wolf whistled at him :o apparently Marat liked being whistled at so he looked down and said "hi" ;) and conversation issued.I found him an easy person to talk to, I didnt have to think too much about what I was going to say, im sorry you caught him on a bad day or whatever but you probably gave off a better impression than you think...

The pic of you with Marat is cool, you look fine, Marat has a funny expression on his face in that photo,I couldnt tell he had just lost a match..

And Vass dear, I cannot THANK YOU enough for all the reports and pics. :smooch:  :smooch:  :smooch:
About him talking to the fans - I'm sure he has nothing against talking to such nice fans like you. And about the interview to Sovetsky Sport - he was talking to the Russian media, the Russian papers have printed complete LIES about him, and that's what he doesn't like. He went to the Yeltsin's scholarhip awarding ceremony, he cares about tennis enough and I think he appreciates fans who understand tennis and are there for tennis, not just screaming & harrassing him.
BTW I NEED all the details on you meeting the GOD himself, PLEEEEEEEASE, PLEEEEEASE.... ;) I hope Fed will play better as the week goes on.
OK, sorry, I don't want to harass you either, enjoy the tournament with Chrissiej, Emily!! :smooch:

Players Party A Hit

- International tennis players enjoy a night of Arabian hospitality -

Dubai, UAE, February 23, 2005: The players party of the Dubai Tennis Championships is always a popular event, and last night was no different.

Marat Safin, the world number three and Moroccan Younes El Aynaoui both enjoyed the Arabic style ambience and wore traditional dress which set the scene for a fun-filled night of belly dancing and shisha.

Held poolside of the Dubai Aviation Club, players competing in the award winning tournament enjoyed a night of Arabian hospitality with some even taking the opportunity to ride on a camel.

Players mingled with friends and family while local and international media took the opportunity to capture the players at their most relaxed.

Colm McLoughlin, Managing Director of Dubai Duty Free, owners and organizers of the Championships, said: "We always enjoy treating the players to the finest Dubai has to offer."

"Over the years the party has become a popular event for the players and it is always a great way for them to relax and enjoy themselves."

as i was with vass for the past two days....what can i say.....it rained....

thursday night's ferrero/federer match was absolutely awesome, the atmosphere was brilliant, and ferrero played so so well, he really deserved to win, it looked like he was putting his heart and soul into it

yesterday (friday) sucked a bit because of the rain, we watched robredo vs kiefer and then henman and ljubicic came on, everytime there was like one drop of rain tim started moaning and they stopped play

getting bored of that we went & watched myskina practice, and federer briefly...a little girl fell onto fed's court when he was practising...i think she was okay, it looked painful...

got only one match live! :( agassi vs davydenko. davy seems a little bit tired and his injury affected his serve a little. and once his serve did not work he lost that point. andre is also competitive. his returning works well as usual and broke davy at the very moment. not much special on this match.
as for the semi later, I think andre has his chance though the nightmare on AO is also lingering in my mind. Roger seems not at his best now. he is improving his game. so for every player, it is a good chance to defeat him now. IMO, once roger consummates his game, it will be more difficult to beat him than last year.

Thanks Emily! Marat and Tommy at one tournament must have been great for you!!!

So they did show the player's party on tv.

Younes was talking about the great food and atmosphere. He also stressed it's important to eat a lot cause you need the energy. ;)

Juanca and gf took a pic with a camel. She cut her hair and looks fab! Those to are such a great couple and really seem to enjoy themselves. She was showing Juanca their pics. :) He also loves the Dubai tournament and says it's well organised, etc. He likes the fact that he can relax with all the other guys on evenings like these.

Verdasco must have had the biggest plate of food. He also said that it's important to eat a lot. It's his first time in Dubai and he loves it.

Jonas is enjoying himself there as well. Life is going good for him, but not on the tennis court.

While one of the guys was being interviewed I saw a certain fashion victim walking by with his plate. ;) THE shorts plus the white/blue shirt he wears when coming onto court. :o He had vegetables and salad on his plate from what I could tell. No meat, but it was probably just his first round. ;)

Lopez looked nice in his jeans and green shirt. :)

Later they showed Marat wearing the traditional clothes. Younes was easy to dress, but covering Marat's head took some time. He sat down and to ladies fixed that thing on his head. He had a bit of hair hanging out. ;)

He sat down with a shisha (that thing they smoke) and Younes took pics of him. He was REALLY laughing his ass off there. I wonder how his pics turned out. ;) They signed some caps and Younes also had an eagle on his arm.

My parents even recognised Marat!!!

It was funny and I only had to wait three days for them to show it. ;)
