I think Acasuso is a pretty good initial draw, Fernando knows him well, better than most players and can beat him. Igor Andreev will be much tougher if he advances.

Come on Fernando you have to beat Acasuso!! In straight short sets ;)

Affortunately, Feña recovered his game and then defeated Acasuso for 3-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5

I hope he is not going to be tired for playing to Andreev to the second round. (sorry for my poor english ;) )

Sorry to be late with my congratulations here today. I got up at 4.00am to watch David's even more scary match on TV - 5th set  Then I was late for work and I haven't had a chance to come here til now - but CONGRATULATIONS FERNANDO :)

Congratulations from me too but I'm really bothered by the lengthy effort he had to put in. He was facing a reasonable opponent like Acasuso who he's already beaten 6 times out of 7, couldn't have wished for an easier one and yet he takes 5 long sets. With 10 double faults as well and a slow serve speed. Something was really wrong there in that match.

As for Andreev, the 2-0 means nothing. The guy has beaten Ferrero (clay), Agassi, Schüttler twice and so on all in 2004, his ATP debut year. I've followed this player, I kind of like his style, and he has an amazing cool mentality (incredible for a Russian) next to the power and good game. Very scary. Hoping for the best for Fernando. After all, he's the only player next to Federer who hasn't lost a match yet in 2005.

Apparently Feña was slightly tired yesterday

Andreev isn't playing very good this year, I think that this will be a very disputed match but I trust that Fernando could win ;)

yeah, he must have been tired and it seems like he gets nervous in slams!!! I mean, that would explain some of his previous horrendous slam results. How adorable!!! Gonzo having anxiety in the big ones! But um, yeah, he did so well at the Olympics and turned around and flopped at the US Open, and now here, he barely escapes a 5-setter right after kicking ass to win a tournament a few days prior. but this was a learning experience for him. First 5-set win in a Slam. Good for him. He's playing well. He's learning about himself. He looks good in yellow... keep up the win streak Fernie!!

Yes - congrats Fernando. David is 2 sets to love up against Ventura at the moment - but looking like losing the 3rd  If he gets though to play Fena I will be really sad and torn in two  but I guess it guarantees me someone I like in the 4th round!

I actually agree Fergie - Fernando is playing a lot better than David. David's confidence is not so good and his concentration has been all over the place since his Father died in December. I personally expect Fernando to win fairly easily in 3 or 4 sets.

Hi guys - guess you know that this match is so hard for me  You only have to look at my avatar and signature to know that David is my favourite player, and I would be lying if I said otherwise - but I love Feña too. As I said before - in one way it is good for me that they play each other because I will still have someone to cheer for in Round 4 - but it is bad too because I will be sad whatever the result  Anyway - just wanted to say - I hope it is a good match and that the best man wins :) If David should be successful, then I hope I will still be welcome here - if he loses I hope you understand that I will be a little sad

Love to you all

Hi Rosie, I can totally understand you as I had a similar situation last week first round of Auckland because James Blake is my 2nd fav. player, but of course I wanted my number 1 Fernando to win and hated rooting against James, but was very happy about Fernando’s win and would have been surely very sad if he had lost.

So whatever happens you are always welcome here :wavey:

Okay, I am getting selfish here. I love David and all. But I reeeaaalllyyyy want Fernando to win! You don't realise how much you really like a certain player until they play another player you really like, and you have to choose! And here, I favor Fernando. I think I can favor him against anyone, except Guga. Go Fernie!!!! If he loses, I will probably cry. This will be such an important match to win

Well it's 3.30am in the morning here and I am following the match on live score over on David's Forum and I think Fernando will finish it off quite quickly. David started well - was 4-1 up really quickly and had 4 set points - but then he lost concentration and lost the 1st set on a tie break and now he is 0-3 down in the second. Fernando is a more solid player at the moment and has a lot more confidence - David is still really shaky - guess it's not surprising as his Father died only a month ago and it affected him badly. So - I hope Fernando thrashes Coria in the next round

I refused to bet on this match because I was too stressed about it!! David has turned it around a bit though now and is 2-1 sets up - it could still go either way though - and I am sooooo tired -it's 4.30am here - thank God no work on a Saturday - I can sleep all day if I need to!

OK guys - hope you're not too angry with me that David won. I am sad for Fernando - but can't deny I am happy for David. I didn't see the match at all - only live scoring here in Europe  - but I understand it was live in Argentina and the end was on ESPN in the States. Don't think Fernando played badly at all from what I hear - just that he began to get tired in the end and David upped his level - from all accounts it was a good match! So - hope you are all OK and not too sad - take care and good night to you
Good Luck to Fernando in his next tournament.
