I'm never in the US Mit. Shown in Asia Star Sports channel and the commentator VJ picked Safin to win, he said on Safin day and Rogi's day, Safin will win. I so want Rogi to prove him wrong, he did vs Andre that day when VJ also picked Andre to win

COME ON ROGI!!! Safin is serving really well today, especially on important points :scared:

isy, legolas and others,

how good is the quality? is it all Safin, and has Roger been on the defensive a lot?

It is really quite good...well for those part that I dare to watch :o

Rogi is on defensive a lot especially on Safin's serves and certainly looked more rattled coz of Safin power. He was on the baseline with Safin 1st set but had started his s/v on 1st serves since 2nd set, trying to mix things up.

If Safin doesn't lose his cool now, Rogi still have a tough match ahead but I think getting the last set will calm him down quite a bit.

COME ON ROGI!!!

Roger will bounce back from this, losing a tight match to a great player like Marat is nothing to be ashamed of, he may have made a few mistakes today, but he will learn from those and come back stronger. I hope he will be OK and not get too depressed about this, it was very close, and there will be plenty of time for him to regroup and recover from this. There is still a whole season ahead, and plenty of other goals for him to win, and he will be back, don't worry.

Reminds me of that match Sampras played at the USO one year losing to Jaime Yzaga in five tight sets being injured and not playing his best but he fought all the way till the bitter end. In his biography the authoer wrote that if ever there was a reason to fear Sampras it was on this day with the fight and determination he showed. Same goes for Roger- if ever the rest of the tour should be fearful of Roger it is now having showed so much guts going down. And with wounded pride he will become even more determined.

True WyverN. This is a good loss. It helps to put Roger's mind in perspective about the need to work harder and horn his talent better. However, disappointing is the fact that Roger tried a between the leg shot on his match point. He was up 5-2 in the tiebreak and just went for too much, infact serving harder than he had all match long. You know what? For over a year now, Roger has been going for too much on the big occasions because of his confidence and he had been able to make them, but it somewhat came back to hunt him today. Hopefully, this loss will help build his resolve and help him win the French and other big titles as the year unfolds.

True WyverN. This is a good loss. It helps to put Roger's mind in perspective about the need to work harder and horn his talent better.

I really hope so, Roger's reaction to this will be very interesting. Some have used tough losses like this to become even greater players (Sampras) yet a few others never really got over a heartbreaking loss (Borg). I am confident Roger is of the former category though and I think him fighting all the way showed that.

However, disappointing is the fact that Roger tried a between the leg shot on his match point. He was up 5-2 in the tiebreak and just went for too much, infact serving harder than he had all match long.

The commentators had a big debate whether Roger went for the right shot after the lob on match point. Personally I think it was Rogers only option and credit must be given Marat, only a perfect lob like that would have kept him in the match.

You know what? For over a year now, Roger has been going for too much on the big occasions because of his confidence and he had been able to make them, but it somewhat came back to hunt him today.

Well I hope this confidence doesnt vanish because of one loss. imo it is this confidence that has won him many close matches last year and was part of the reason he kept coming up with such a incredible level of play today whenever he was down, in the end it wasnt meant to be though.

He has a good record, coming back after losses: Wimbledon after Kuerten, the US Open after Berdych. So I fully agree with you WyveN. Nobody can always win and this was the lesson of today, I have not seen the match yet, but the way the scores developed, it was a hard-fought battle, Roger gave it everything, but let's not forget to give Marat his due credit.

MELBOURNE, Jan 28 (Reuters) - Roger Federer's dramatic loss to Russian Marat Safin in the semi-finals of the Australian Open (news - web sites) on Thursday not only brought to an end the defence of his title but also proved something to the rest of the tennis world.

The Swiss world number one is not invincible.

Three grand slam titles out of the past four, 11 titles in 2004 and a run of 21 straight matches without defeat had helped make Federer one of the hottest favourites in Australian Open history.

Since October 2003, Federer had won 24 straight matches against top-10 players and five matches without dropping a set served only to reinforce feelings that the 23-year-old would stroll to his fifth grand slam title.

But after almost four and a half hours of the most dramatic tennis imaginable, Safin showed the rest the way with a stunning victory, saving a match point and squandering six of his own before clinching a 5-7 6-4 5-7 7-6 9-7 victory.

Despite having a match point at 6-5 in the fourth-set tiebreak, Federer had no arguments about his defeat.

"Losing by having match point, it's always going to hurt, no matter how great the match was," he said.

On his match point, Federer ran back for a Safin lob and played a between-the-legs shot which found the net.

'GUTSY LOB'

"I thought I would have lost the point anyway. He came up with a good shot to lob me. Got to have some guts to do that, so it's well done."

Federer, who struggled with a nerve-end problem and a blister on his foot, said: "I surprised myself by coming back because I had all these problems, and he has a great serve and a great game."

He needed treatment for back problems during the four-hour 28-minute match and came back from 5-3 down in the final set.

"He was obviously more fresh than me, so I thought there was probably no way coming back. I had the feeling, like he gave me a second chance, you know, and I almost took it.

"It's really a pity. A point here and there changed the match. I had my chances, but he didn't allow me to take them.

"But at least I can leave the place feeling good about myself because I thought I gave it all I had, and that's all I got. He was the better player in the end.

Federer, whose number one ranking is not under threat, said he was looking forward to getting his revenge over Safin.

"Of course, I'm hoping for a rematch so I can beat him again. I haven't been involved in too many such great matches. But it was a thrill actually to be a part of it, that's very clear."

Tough loss for Rogi but at least he lost to the next best player out there. Marat was about the only player I can stand Rogi losing to and Rogi managed to make the SF, which is no mean feat. Of course I wanted Rogi to defend this slam but I still think RG, Wimby and Basel are the most important goals for him this year.

When I woke up and found that they were STILL playing I thought... oh oh... not good news... Rogi rarely wins 5-setters cos he usually beats players in 4 or straights. So I was quite worried.

What worries me most is his back -- it bothers him when he's under a lot of pressure, which he was this tourney... fr the first rd, he seemed nervous... he was never playing his best and I'm glad he managed to beat AA in straights, as he s.

Rogi must get some rest [fr the last 2 yrs basically] and then work on his fitness -- that little tummy we've been seeing this slam needs to be slimmed down and it can't be good for his back.

This is the 3rd time his back played up on him: Wimby03 v. Lopez, then in Basel same yr v. Ljubicic... and now this! Rogi knew that Marat w be his greatest threat -- he knows talent when he sees/play it! AND... the crucial factor is PL! Only PL knows how to beat Rogi...

Also, Marat has been businesslike this slam, unusual for him and it paid off... he was serious about winning and he has done his job! Congrats to Marat, cos I really like his tennis and his character.

I said, whoever won this SF must go on to take the title, even if it isn't Rogi. SO... I shall be cheering for Marat to win his 2nd slam. He finally won on his b-day!

Rogi... pls take care of yourself first and foremost! And we shall be cheering for you when you play your next tourney.

If he has to skip Rotterdam due to health, he should... better that he not push himself as he did this SF: so many probs! Now Pandy, Lleyt, Guille, Nalby, Gaston, etc. will feel they have a real chance to beat Rogi... so beware, Rogi! Marat and Nalby are coming back...

Now who is the better opponent for Marat? Lleyt or Pandy? Marat s have revenge over Pandy... when he s have beaten him at Houston.

Still have to go back and check the scoring thread for Rogi's epic match v. Marat.

DAVAI, MARAT! You beat the #1 player, now you must win the title! You deserve it!

The upside? Rogi doesn't have to worry about winning the Grand Slam anymore... let's hope nobody wins it... and I doubt anyone can...

good things you tell Rogifan, i hope that his back will not trouble him more and that he will be totally fit for Rotterdam. I hope or MArat or Lleyton will win AO, I don't know who i prefer more.... but yeah, i think this loss hurts, but it's not as bad as losing against a guy that isn't in the top 30...

Roger   He fought so well to save all those match points and I thought he would then come through. It was a great match though but  all the same.

Well done Roger on making the semis and fighting so hard! :)

Roger  but :worship:

Roger made us all proud to be his fans. He showed why he is such a great champ, why he deserves such nice group of fans, why he deserves respect from every single player...On quite several occasions, I actually had given up on him, thinking there was no way he would come back, but he just kept proving me wrong, with sth amazingly bravo until the very last game...Soooooo sad about the result, but so proud to see Roger put on such a damn hard fight. It's always tough to lose a big match, not to say such a dramatic big match, but such is life. Roger is bound to lose at some time. The more he wins, the sooner this day will come. So the day just came today. I do think there's much positive we can take from this loss and I do firmly believe our Roger will come back even stronger!

:kiss: Roger, Love you forever :)

Im agreed with you. Nice words.
And I think Marat won GOOD. Roger did a lots of efforts, he survived lots of time I thoght he was "done" but was not enoght. I Insist: his first service was the key. He did not count with it. Everytime he was seving I said: Ok, give me an ace, give me a first service impossible to return as you did at Agassis game... but not....
It helped a bit sometimes, but was the less.
Anyway I hope to hear his words.
We must go an support him all. Lets go and say all we think at his site. I cannot wait I can get into it. ITS IMPOSSIBLE. So slow

Kisses to all of us, Federer fans, for being there for our champion, winner or looser, he is our champion. And congratulations to Marat. he deserves it. I hope he wins. I hope he wins Lleyton. I think Lleyton will beat Andy Pandy.-

It's really quite funny, how people are reacting in GM. Federer is quickly becoming like Roddick in terms of popularity on this forum.

Many people were cheering against Roger rather than cheering for Roger, a sure sign that Fed is assuming Roddick-like status on this board. One tough loss, and Federer drops from "greatest ever" to "he'll never dominate as much as Sampras".

People claiming that Tennis is Saved etc etc. Disgusting and obnoxious. People should learn to appreciate tennis for the game and not necessarily who might be delivering the shots.

Hi, fellow rogi fans... its really painful lose this kind of match. But I will overcome soon and i beilive so will Roger. Now he has less pressure on his shoulder so he will perform like the best he can do in the future. Form this match I learn he can play better and improve. Isnt it scary? :worship: Today his service (back pain) let him down. This loss made me thank for the hard work he had done last year. When he lost a tie break, i said myself 'federer lost, how much i hate tennis'. But no, I love tennis, and I m very proud of Roger for fighting so hard when everything was against him. I think each of us is a little bit more Federer lover than yesterday. :wavey: He will work on his fitness, he will improve, he will have stonger mentality. From the moment he lost a match I know that he has become a better player than he was. This time the bitter side was on his side. And he showed the total grace of a true champ. And from what I saw I dont think he will lose a confidence on himself.
And like once 'Maria' said, He Is Only 23!!!
There is no way Roger is going to read this, but, ROGER, YOU CONVERTED ME TODAY A TRUE FAN OF YOURS!

I think the trainer came on the court to treat his Back problem for precautionary reasons. He was feeling some discomfort, I don't think it's an injury persay, at least thats what fed said in his interview.

Well guess we are all pretty sad now - but it'll be gone soon. Even though it's kind of hard to swallow that he wasn't able to make it in 4. His serve wasn't really up there. (O.K. we got spoiled against AA) And maybe it had to do with that back pain - therefore no need to be too sad I'm sure Roger will learn from that. And it was clear that once he loses the trash talk will start. That's the time when you notice who's a bandwagoon jumper and who's a devoted fan.
It wasn't meant to be today but how know for what it's meant to be ;)
He's still the greatest player I've ever seen. And he showed in that last set that he became a fighter too. Saving all those mps it just was one to many..
... well better luck next time Roger!! Thanks for showing such a great performance we all knew it's going to be a though one and for once the other player got the better end.

This kind of thing just comes about every time after Roger loses a match. No big deal. Just enjoy being a Roger fan here :wavey:

Yes I saw that as well. The same thing happened to the Williams sisters when they dominated. There will have been a lot of people really happy with this result even if they are not Marat fans.

As for saying he will never dominate like Sampras, well Roger's 2004 was better than any year Sampras ever had IMO. Everything Roger does seems to get compared to Pete but I think everyone here is realistic and we know he won't win every Grand Slam and that's why no one here is overreacting to this loss. It is not a disaster, it's just a shame he didn't win.

You really dont' have to bother about some posters in GM. Rogi always have his share of detractors, and how he had become so dominating for past year certainly will attract more. But the way I see him in reality, there were plenty of people cheering for him, and can totally appreciate his tennis, his character and personality (I mean seriously, who wouldn't?) But people who insist in saying he's bad for tennis obviously had been eating too many sour grapes past year.

Arguing with them are just waste of energy in my opinion and if you been here long enough, it was very clear where some of them were coming from and it's only time and time again showing their ignorance :D

Awwww, that hurt *so* much. I was so ill from nerves and exhausted due to the stress that it's taken me all afternoon to feel ok enough to even show up around here....and if I'm hurting that much, I don't dare to think how bad Roger is feeling right now. But it will pass <sigh>. It's lovely to read all the positive and encouraging comments on here and the "Well Done Roger" thread in GM - thanks folks!

I guess he had to lose sometime, those streaks were made for breaking ;) It's sad it had to happen now (Rotterdam or Dubai would have been preferable!) but there are some great things we can take out of this:

- the match was a classic in drama (if not in quality)
- he lost to the other most talented player in the world
- he showed that he's a champ in fighting to the end, and losing graciously
- his Grand Slam finals winning streak is still intact ;)

Let's not forget he last time he lost on RLA was in a similar match, from two sets up and serving at 5-3 30-15, in September 2003. His reaction? Well, just look at 2004. I'm not suggesting Roger will give Marat five bagels over the next twelve months, but I do think he will find a way to raise his game with the extra challenge.

This express has a few more gears yet, don't vacate your seats! :)

Now that I also have more time to think about this, I am glad he lost to Marat. Marat is arguably the next best player, so I think it's fitting he lost to him and maybe develop a rivalry and further push Roger. Their matches had always been close and great quality, so I really think this will develop both of them.

Now, time for Marat to finally win this slam. He better not lose in another slam final... :o

Exactly and the way he fought for this match, even those who badly want to see him lose can't really say anything bad about it, well...exception to the very stupid and ignorant one of course ;)
