Roger simply made this match a service game, taking away unnecessary rallying which was what Agassi wanted. He also took away the crosscourt rallying from Agassi and made Agassi move. He made Agassi look mediocre. Too good.

He said he had to serve well vs Andre coz he thinks Andre is a better player on the baseline...and he served amazing today!!!

here is the first press that is emerging about this fantastic performancy by Roger. It's american, and surprisingly: its DEAD ON!!

Federer humbles Agassi to reach semis Defending champion
Defending champion Roger Federer humbled four-times winner Andre Agassi 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to keep up his stunning grand slam record and reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open in Melbourne.

The Swiss world number one won a surprisingly one-sided quarter-final match on Rod Laver Arena in 99 minutes after dominating the American with his impenetrable serve and winning virtually every key point in a nerveless performance.

Eighth seed Agassi was not far from his best but Federer was able to grab one service break in each of the three sets and successfully fought off the few challenges the 34-year-old American was able to mount.

Federer won three of the four grand slams last year and is bidding to become the first man since Pete Sampras in 1993-1994 to win three consecutive grand slam events.

He will play fourth seed Marat Safin of Russia in the semi-finals in a repeat of last year's final.

Woo-hoo! Is it just me, or does anyone else feel like posting "Andre LOST his fifth! 3-6, 4-6, 4-6 vs Federer" in GM?

Schadenfreude aside, it was a terrific performance, talk about shutting Agassi out of the match. Has he ever hit 22 aces in three sets before? Those last few games of the first set basically decided the match, especially the 5-3 game where Federer just squeaked out the hold with a couple of crucial serves. From then on Agassi played well on his serve when he was behind, but he dumped it at the start of both the second and third sets, almost as if he thought the result was inevitable. My commentators observed that he was hitting with more pace and anger than they'd seen in a long time, but Federer's defence was so good that he ended up going for too much. The backhand was in and out, but in all other aspects he was brilliant.

I'm sure Federer will clarify what he said before the match in his post-match interview, and stress that he does respect Agassi and knew it would be a tough match. And for all the 'trash-talking' headlines, he backed up the words on court, and that's what matters most.

Jolly Roger flies high
January 25, 2005

ROGER Federer has sent another chilling warning to his title rivals with a straight-sets demolition of Andre Agassi to charge into the semi-finals of the Australian Open.

http://foxsports.news.com.au/common/imagedata/0,5001,412778,00.jpg

The world No.1 stretched his unbeaten streak to 26 as he put the four-times winner and eighth seed to the sword, 6-3 6-4 6-4 in 1hr 39 min.

Federer, who hasn't lost against a top-10 player in 24 matches since October 2003, was irresistible as he tore apart the eight-times grand slam champion to set up a semi-final against Marat Safin, whom he beat in last year's final.

Yet again the 23-year-old Swiss ace showed why he is in a class of his own as he closes on his fifth grand slam crown and third in a row.

Federer's virtuoso performance enabled him to equal Agassi's stretch of 26 unbeaten matches set in 1995 – the joint third-longest winning streak since 1990 behind Austrian Thomas Muster's 35 in 1995.

The Swiss maestro's last lost a competitive match to Czech Tomas Berdych in the second round of the Athens Olympics tournament last August.

And he last lost to a top-10 opponent when Juan Carlos Ferrero, the world No.1 at the time, defeated him in Madrid 15 months ago.

Federer brought gasps from the Rod Laver Arena crowd with his dazzling array of groundstrokes and a potent serve that realised 22 aces.

He has now beaten Agassi in their past five meetings and leads 5-3 overall.

Agassi came under pressure in the sixth game of the opening set when he double-faulted on the fourth break point to deliver Federer a 4-2 lead.

Yje American, who reigned at Melbourne Park in 1995, 2000, 2001 and 2003 before Federer won last year, took the top seed to six deuces before Federer served out for the opening set in 35 minutes.

From there it was one-way traffic as Federer broke Agassi again in the opening game of the second set when the 34-year-old American's backhand was wide.

Agassi never gave up and stretched Federer to three deuces before the Swiss champion held serve with an ace and a thundering first serve.

The reigning Australian, Wimbledon and US Open champion served out for the second set and went two-up when Agassi's forehand was long.

Yet again Federer broke Agassi in the first game of the final set, and he defied the veteran American's best efforts to break back and prevent him from a straight-sets victory.

Federer is bidding to become the first player to win three consecutive grand slams since Pete Sampras in 1993-94, and only the third man in the Open era (post-1969) to achieve it along with Australian Rod Laver.

Federer Ousts Agassi at Australian Open

By PAUL ALEXANDER, Associated Press Writer

MELBOURNE, Australia - In a matchup worthy of a final, defending champion Roger Federer was graceful and at his relentless best in beating four-time winner Andre Agassi 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 on Tuesday to advance to the semifinals of the Australian Open (news - web sites).

http://us.news1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/rids/20050125/t/r1661600149.jpg

The top-ranked Federer extended his winning streak to 26 matches with a dazzling array of stinging winners from the baseline, crisp volleys and 22 aces that often left the quick Agassi flat-footed and the sellout crowd applauding.

"He just outplayed me," Agassi said. "He was too good. I would suggest to his next opponent that he doesn't look to me for advice."

The 34-year-old Agassi, who came into the season-opening Grand Slam in perhaps the best shape of his life to be ready for matches like this, survived a record 51 aces in his fourth-round victory over Joachim Johansson by exploiting the few chances he got.

But one of the game's best counter-punchers never could find a real weakness to exploit against Federer's all-around game.

With both players painting the lines and punishing ordinary shots, Federer broke for a 4-2 lead in the first set when Agassi, trying to put a little extra on a second serve, double-faulted.

Then, as he did again and again while winning three Grand Slam events last year, Federer found an extra gear when he needed it. The Swiss star saved four break points — two with aces — while serving for the set in a game that went to deuce six times. A third ace gave Federer his third set point, and he turned a good service return from Agassi into a backhand winner down the line.

"I have no secrets," a smiling Federer said. "It's like roulette. I always pick the right numbers."

Federer then broke Agassi in the first game of each of the next two sets and fended off the charismatic American's only other break point, in the fourth game of the second set, with a pair of service winners sandwiched around an ace.

With the crowd urging Agassi to extend the match, Federer finished it off with a serve that Agassi lunged for but could only dump into the net.

Asked how he made it look so easy, Federer said: "First of all, a good start always helps, especially against Andre. I really served well the whole match. He never broke me."

Federer next faces fourth-seeded Marat Safin, who he beat in last year's final. But while Safin was exhausted then after playing six grueling matches that took more than 18 hours, he's been on the court only 10 1/2 hours through five matches so far, including 90 minutes Tuesday to beat No. 20 Dominik Hrbaty 6-2, 6-4, 6-2.

Federer Humbles Agassi to Reach Semis

27 minutes ago Sports - Reuters

By Paul Tait

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Defending champion Roger Federer (news) humbled four-times winner Andre Agassi (news) 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 on Tuesday to keep his stunning grand slam record intact and reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open (news - web sites).

http://us.news1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/nm/20050125/amdf834971.jpg

The Swiss world number one triumphed in a surprisingly one-sided match on Rod Laver Arena in 99 minutes after dominating the American with his impenetrable serve and winning virtually every key point in a nerveless performance.

Eighth seed Agassi was not far from his best but Federer was able to grab one service break in each of the three sets and successfully fought off the few challenges the 34-year-old American was able to mount.

Federer won three of the four grand slams last year and is bidding to become the first man since Pete Sampras (news) in 1993/1994 to win three consecutive grand slam events.

The 23-year-old will play fourth seed Marat Safin (news) of Russia in the semifinals in a repeat of last year's final here. Safin earlier beat 20th seed Dominik Hrbaty (news) of Slovakia 6-2, 6-4, 6-2.

Federer beat Safin 7-6, 6-4, 6-2 to win the final on his fourth appearance in Melbourne in 2004 and is an almost unbackable favorite to retain his title. He is yet to drop a set in five rounds.

The win over Agassi means Federer now has a 24-0 record against top 10 players since October 2003 and is unbeaten in his last 26 matches stretching back to the August Olympics.

Agassi no match for sublime Federer

World No1 wins 6-3, 6-4, 6-4
Tuesday January 25, 2005

http://image.guardian.co.uk/sys-images/Sport/Pix/pictures/2005/01/19/federerget.jpg

Top seed Roger Federer produced some outstanding tennis to comfortably dispose of Andre Agassi in straight sets and set up a mouth-watering semi-final with Marat Safin.
Despite playing some superb shots in front of a capacity crowd cheering him on, 34-year-old Agassi was unable to get to grips with Federer's stylish and imposing play, one break of serve enough for the world No1 to take the opening set.

After losing his serve again in the first game of the second set, Agassi managed to forge a break point of his own in the fourth game but Federer held on, the Swiss star racking up 19 aces as he took the set 6-4.

And when the world No1 broke again in the opening game of the third set, the writing was on the wall for Agassi, who, like the rest of the men's tour, had no answer to Federer's incredible all-round game.

After recording his 26th successive win, Federer said: "A good start always helps, especially against Andre and I think I really served well, he never broke me.

"From the baseline it was clear who was the better man so I had to serve better."

i liked this exchange a lot:

Q. His movement, is he surprising you where he shows up? Is that part of it? You think it's going to be somewhere and he's somewhere else.
ANDRE AGASSI: Well, he's got anticipation. But it's more about his ability to make a court a lot smaller. Because he can cover so well to the forehand, it really allows him to sort of stay at home in the backhand corner. So that backhand corner gets smaller and smaller, sort of dares you to hit it to that forehand. There's a lot of times you do and you're thinking that's a good idea, then a second later you're going, "Why did I do that?"

Q. You had a little conversation with Roger at the net. You say anything special there?
ANDRE AGASSI: No, I just congratulated him. I told him, "Too good and good luck." I hope he has good luck the rest of the way. No, he just said he enjoyed playing against me and hopes that happens more. I said, "That makes one of us."

Not bad I mean I was at all of the Gaudio matches sitting with some Argentines. You know my name and should have asked that, but I see what you mean there were a few fitting that description as well.

Swiss magician bundles Agassi outBy Alan Atwood
January 26, 2005

We've grown accustomed to his face. Andre Agassi has been a regular visitor to Melbourne since 1995; he's won the Open four times. But seldom have we seen the expression on show last night: bemused, bewildered, almost helpless. Then again, never on this court had he met a magician named Roger Federer.

Frankly, the much-anticipated match of the tournament was a fizzer. The defending champion from Switzerland swept aside Agassi in little more than an hour and a half: 6-3 6-4 6-4. Federer will next play Marat Safin in a semi-final. Agassi can make plans to return home, having made his earliest exit from the Open since 1999.

Of Federer, Agassi said simply: "He does everything well and a lot of things great."

Statistics can be numbing, but a few underline Federer's dominance of men's tennis at the moment. He's on a 26-match winning streak, and has won his past 24 matches against other top 10 players.

But it's best to remember shots rather than figures. Here's a few from last night: a drop-volley from nowhere; a sliced backhand that went past an approaching Agassi like a train on different tracks; a cross-court backhand hit from well behind the baseline that the man from Las Vegas never even touched. And the man regarded as the best returner in the game could not break Federer's serve once.

The ace count was embarrassing: 22 to Federer; one to Agassi - and that didn't come until the third set, drawing enthusiastic applause from a stunned Centre Court crowd. There were also 46 winners to Federer; 13 to Agassi. The top seed also committed almost a dozen more errors. In other words, the defending champ has plenty of room for improvement. It's scary.

Some of those errors can be explained by Federer's dominance. On a hot and still night, Federer won a service break early in every set. This, he said later, allowed him to take some chances. Once he had weathered a brief assault from Agassi late in the first set he always seemed to be in control.

Agassi, by contrast, was impotent, unable to pierce his armour.

Between points and games, Federer walked in an almost lackadaisical manner. Whatever might be simmering inside is seldom allowed to show. And there is something aristocratic in the way he takes opponents apart, slicing them like a Musketeer with a razor-sharp blade. Before the match he seemed almost offended when asked if he would have to lift his game to beat Agassi. No, he suggested, it was the American who faced the challenge. Last night he backed up his word.
Last year, Agassi bowed out only after a titanic five-set struggle against Marat Safin in the semi-finals. Last night's effort was much more meek, and it hurt him. "He outplayed me; he was just too good," Agassi said. As for Federer, he seemed satisfied, if not overly impressed, with his own performance. Besides, he didn't come here to win a quarter-final. His eyes are fixed on Sunday's prize.

The crowd of more than 15,000 left somewhat disappointed. Their desire to see a contest meant that many of Federer's finest moments drew only desultory applause. The cries of "Come on, Andre" started to sound increasingly desperate. The American left blowing kisses to the crowd. He has already indicated he wants to come back. But age is overtaking him, as well as gifted opponents.

In many ways this was a clash between past and present eras in men's tennis. Federer, 23, has won all of his four Grand Slam titles during the past two years. Agassi, 34, is a former No. 1 with a history in Grand Slam finals that extends back to 1990, when Federer was eight years old.

Most of the men with whom Agassi contested Grand Slam finals are off the circuit. But Agassi keeps chugging along. Federer came to Melbourne hoping to defend his Australian title. The last man to manage that feat was Agassi in 2001.

I read an Interview in a swiss newspaper from Agassi:

He said that Roger played much better than he did today and it wasn't possible to him to rebreak Roger but he love to play against him because they always have good matches...

then they asked him which advice he would give the players who will have to play against roger in the next rounds and he said: they would rather not ask me - I don't have any good advice for them..:)

and the last question was if he thinks that Roger will win the tourney and he answered: it would be deffinitely wrong if we wouldnt consider him as a favourite but we are all here to win over him...

I think Agassi really "looks up" to our Roger!!! :worship:

From a Marat fan (on how Marat can beat Rogi):

1. Start very well and being very aggressive and focused from the FIRST point.

Sometimes Marat tends to start kind of lazy and then being forced to play catch up.
If he starts with missing first serves and few unforced errors, Roger can gain even more confidence and will let his shots fly. Marat will need to try to put him out of his comfort zone immediately.

2. BIG POINTS. BIG POINTS.

One or two points can make a huge difference in a match. Marat will need to fire his first serves at crucial points (breakpoints down and in tiebreaks). Another thing is breaking Roger's serve. Marat can not afford to be something like 1 for 9 in breakpoints converted. If he gets one or two chance in a set, he gotta take advantage of it.

3. Serve extremely well.

First serve:
Roger is serving better and better and can very well be top 5 server in the game right now. He made 22 aces in his match against Agassi. Marat will need to have his 1st serve % in high 50s or even 60s to be competitive. Most importanly he will need to serve great on big points.

Second serve:

Marat's second serve is better this year. He will need to vary his spins, speed and location of his second serves to not allow Fed run around and rip his forehands. He can not afford to keep hitting to his backhand exclusively.

4. Come to net

Come to net only a great approach shot, otherwise Fed is gonna be passing.

5. Rip forehands

Marat's forehand is one of his weakest shots and he can't allow to hit it to the center of the court with no depth. Play it aggresively, the same way he played in Houston, even though he made few more mistakes with it, it didn't allow Fed to take control of the point

6. Engage in more backhand to backhands rallies than fh to fh.

Fed's forehand is much better than Marat's. He will need to try to avoid that shot as often as possible.

7. Aggressive second serve returns and blocking first serves.

Roger directs his first serves as well as anybody. If Marat will try to hit every first serve hard, he will be missing a lot of them. He will need to block wide serves deep into Fed's backhand and then rally. On second serves, he need to be relatively aggressive and gain control of the point.

8. Slice some of backhands to Roger's backhand to throw him off the rythm

I think Roger is struggling somewhat with very high and very low balls on his backhand side. Marat can not hit loopy shots, so he will need to slice very low once in a while.

9. God, please let it rain on Thursday, so they will close that roof!!!

10. Roger, don't play your A game....

Amen.

last year Roger won against Hewitt on the Australien Day (AO) , against Andy on the American Day (Wimby final) and he won in Toronto on the National Swiss day (1st August) so he should also win tomorrow!!!! go for that Roger!!!!!!!!! :worship: :worship: :worship:

Will sit in front of the TV - but I am also a bit in a strange mood - hope he can win

hey Rogifan: Happy Birthday hope Roger will make you a delated B'day present tomorrow (and not Marat...)

June 12 is the final of Halle and Queens -- so if Marat wants to win, he needs to play one of those grass tourneys...

hey, its not Russia day tomorrow, but it IS marat's birthday!!!!
"Safin, who is just 1-6 lifetime against Federer, will try to spring the upset on his 25th birthday"
so in keeping with the theme, Rogi will beat him!!!!

Hoping for a great match but Roger in 3 :) if not 3, then, 4 or even 5. In all other situations, not involving Roger, I'd root for Marat...so I hope he plays great, and feels good about himself.
