BTW any of you have watched Baghdatis match here? I haven't gotten a chance to see any match of his, but he must be in fine form to be able to beat Ljubo and Robredo back to back in straight sets.

I still prefer robredo to be his opponent. Playing a baseliner should prepare him better for facing Andre....

I am more worried about Johansson than about Agassi

Really?
Its just that Federer's matches have been extremely close with Andre and you would think on rebound ace Andre would be even tougher.
Johansson on the other hand would bring little else then a big serve and a forehand, something that Roger has very rarely had problems with. Your right of course, Baghdadis is first.

By the way someone on another forum seems to think Roger is a bit overweight (around the mid section) after the offseason. Has anyone else noticed that?

Dont know about the Ljubicic match but Robredo was his own worst enemy in todays match, Robredo had some sort of injury and that really affected his serve.
Roger will definetly need to play well but if he does I dont think Baghdatis is quite ready to beat him yet.

Well, they never played each other before and with the qualities you describe, assuming Johansson is on a run, and not overawed it could get dangerous.

Honestly, there are many too many things I try to follow when watching Roger, footwork, grips, etc. I have no time for his belly ;)

Well, I am sure Roger will raise his game when he needs to- one less than perfect match and already an apocalypse is being predicted. The point is Roger is still in the tournament without having spent too much excess energy finishing his matches quickly.

The first time he played Baggy Buttface he didn't know what to expect and it took him a couple of sets to get used to his game and when he did he won pretty comprehensively in the end. Roger knows he needs to get out of the blocks quickly and not fool around too much at the net being a sucker for the pass.

Also if he were to play Andre- Andre is not perfect either. He was lucky to get away with winning his match today in straight sets, could have easily lost both of the 1st 2 sets against Dent. Federer in the situations Dent was today will not be as forgiving. But I am getting ahead of myself- right now let's not think beyond Sunday.

lol, WELL HE ALWAYS HAS THE SAME BODY i think, i ONLY NOTICE BIGGER, ( NOT FAT) MAYBE HE WAS USING WEIGHTS= ON THE SHOULDER AND CHEST.

ABOUT LAST NIGHT (DAY FOR SOME OF YOU) GAME. I WAS THINKING A BIT ABOUT IT AND LETS SAY ROGERS NUMBERS SHOW HE DID EVERYTHING ALL RIGHT, WHILE US (FANS) , ON THE OTHER SIDE, SUFFER A BIT, COS HE MADE LOTS OF MISTAKES (UE) BUT STILL NUMBERS DO NOT SHOW THAT (6-3 -- 5-2)
WHAT I WAS THINKING THAT TO JARKKO TO GET INJURED, HE HAD TO PLAY HIS BEST TENNIS, GO TO THE LIMITS, TOO MUCH EFFORT FOR THE SERVES, I GUESS . AND ROGER DID NOT MAKE LOTS OF EFFORTS.... ACTUALLY JUST A COUPLE.
SO THE BALANCE IS NOT BAD....

lol, Laura, if we watched Roger's match together playing like that i'm sure we'll both be swearing too! we're spoiled by his sublime tennis, we were not expecting this. :haha:
I firmly believe the swearings would be well flying around and exploding  You know, even I'm watching him alone, I just can't help keeping throwing shit to him at some stupid points :tape: :p Well, I'm hopeless...Poor Roger :hug:

btw, I finally figured out what Rogi was trying to say in his interview with Jim when he asked about that around the net post shot...Rogi said yeah that running around fh...errrr...yeah...incre..."NECK TO NECK NET POST :haha::haha::haha: (what the hell is that? Rogi?) and Jim has to say let me translate : around the net shot :haha:
:haha::haha: You have too much time in hand, huh? But he was too cute in that interview and funny

Sunday will be interesting. I'd love to see Andre knocked out by Pim Pim :tape: Surely Roger has to top Baghdatis first. Haven't got any chance to watch this young guy yet, but from what has been said about him, I'm looking forward to this match :)

Roger has a not so good day yesterday, but he did not have one of those since the beginning of the year. It's good that it happens now rather than later. I did feel that he was experimenting a little bit yesterday by playing more ship and charge. In the long run, ghe is going to be better. I assume that he will not do that against Andre. Is it me that everyone talks about how Hewitt, Roddick, Andre worked hard during the off- season to compete with Roger better, but everyone seems to forget that Roger is trying too improve too?He did hire Tony Roche for something.

Roger seems to have gained a little weight, but overweight around the mid section is a little far stretched.

Q. Because of your record over the last six months or so, do you get the impression that people don't expect you to make any mistakes and are kind of shocked when you miss the kind of volley you missed in the first game?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, now I start to feel, you know, at times in matches, you know, when I get broken, people are surprised. So I don't want to know how it is when I lose a set, you know. Well, I saw it in Kooyong, actually, when I lost a set to Gaudio in exhibition. They couldn't believe it.
We'll see what happens next match. But I think they so used to that I'm winning, you know, so people don't understand when I'm losing. It's not that simple.

I think that he might to feel tooo much pressure.WE are too hard on him.

Exactly. The British Eurosport commentators were very annoying during this match - acting as if Roger was playing the worst match he's ever played. Kuznetsova was on Vodafone at the same time and after she won the first set there was an update on her match and the commentator said "One Grand Slam champion going well then, whereas here we have one looking like an imposter at the moment". I nearly threw something through the TV! What a ridiculous comment. Roger looked a bit annoyed with himself at times today but I thought he was always playing well enough to deserve the lead he had.

It sounds paranoid but I keep getting the feeling that people in the media are waiting for Roger to fall. He has set such a high standard for himself that some people sound as if it's time someone stepped up and took him out here. He is still here though! :D

Good luck Roger against Marcos :)

Not paranoid at all- a Federer loss would be a big scoop for them to write so they need to build up an image of invincibility so that if/when he actually *gasp* loses a match it will have that much more of a dramatic impact.

And now for something completely different...Pandy beats Rogi in this impromptu poll...;)

Sexy stars are worth courting
Shaun Phillips
22jan05

BOFFINS can argue about economic benefit and job spikes but it is hard to go past the Australian Open as Melbourne's sexiest major event.

While spring racing has glamour covered it comes second to summer tennis in terms of exposure.
It is short and skimpy on court and off at Melbourne Park.

Most punters are happy for Damien Oliver and Darren Gauci to keep their silks buttoned.

The Grand Prix has its share of bikinis and muscle shirts, but they are more often than not on models pushing product. On the bleachers at the tennis it is like Beaumaris beach. The sexiest of the sexy stand out like sexy beacons.

Most young men cannot see past leggy Russsian Maria Sharapova.

A poll around the outer courts puts the Siberian six-footer way out in front. "She tickles my fancy," said 16-year-old Dave Stree.

Gerard Reeves appreciates the Wimbledon champion's single-minded focus. "And she's got a good body," the 15-year-old said.

Other women to rate a mention included Daniela Hantuchova, American star Venus Williams, Anastasia Myskina and Australian pair Alicia Molik and Sophie Ferguson.

Young Argentine Gisela Dulko, bundled out in the second round, is an emerging crowd favourite. On the other side of the net Andy Roddick outpolls his nearest rivals two to one.

"Lleyton Hewitt has got good arms and back, but Roddick is sexy everywhere," Bonnie McHarg, 17, said.

"He seems like he has a good personality . . . and he's hot," Olivia Friedman, 13, said.

James Blake and Roger Federer :) share the second rung, with Hewitt's possible future brother-in-law Joachim Johansson, Marat Safin, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Tommy Haas and Carlos Moya also snaring a few votes.

But really, it is the eligible A-Rod by a street.

Often practice sessions featuring big names will be better attended than matches going on nearby.

"The players are so hot, but when they take their tops off, it's even better," Sheree James, 21, said.

"Some of the six packs are unbelievable."

Roger has always had a bit of a tummy. It was bad in hamburg in 02 which he still won. Roger is never going to be lean and mean like JC and Guga. I think he likes having a bit of meat on his tummy for more power into his swings. He didn't work out training wise during the off season but all that practice must have taken off the christmas din din. ;)

Roger knows what he is doing. He is fine. He just is at the same fit level as last year. He will train off court before spring masters.

I thght. the prob. w/his last match was boredom. The match v. Jap. s-v was challenging & fun for him, this a sleeper for which he could only motivate himself by turning it into a practice session. Though I too am concerned about his play.

But, Everyone, we have a potentially serious Problemo coming up. They've released the Sun. sched. It's on the Guardian site - side listing, wire copy type thing. I'm extremely concerned that w/limited hrs. ESPN is broadcasting this wkend, that they won't broadcast Rog's match at all. And if you saw it last summer, you know Baggy is a sweet kid & it'll be definitely worth watching - just as we knew that match v. Finn would be dullsville, as much as Rog is ever dull.

So, my request & urgent plea to Everyone - PLEAASE CALL ESPN, HAVE YR. FRIENDS, ENEMIES, RELATIVES, EVERYONE CALL THEM TO DEMAND THEY BROADCAST IT, NO MATTER WHAT TIME. Their number is:1-860-766-2236; then when menu comes, choose option to Press 0. (Be Polite, of course, But Emphatic.)

The reason I'm concerned is that his match is followed on Laver by AA, then Wms2...You get my drift...Believe it or not it Makes A Difference. Also, if your local paper has a columnist there, email them & request that they plead w/ESPN. When ESPN was showing Wimby last summer, they were doing their usual Americans in London horseshit telecast. I wanted to see the entirety of Roger's defense of his title. They were maybe giving him a few spare mins. here & there. I emailed all my friends, etc. & my local columnist, who'd just written this garbage about how it's too bad Americans only care about Am. & don't like RF. ESPN changed their minds & schedule for that day. They showed that match, and every match Rog has played since then at any tournament they were covering. (I know from the columnists next column that he pleaded on our behalf w/the ESPN crew.) SO PLEASE EVERYONE CALL & assure them we don't care how late they broadcast it, as long as they announce when it'll be on so we can set our tapes - though I'd prefer it first, or instead of Wms2. Thanks. (JJ's so tired his match w/AA prob. won't amount to much anyway.)

But I will rather watch Rogi/Andre over Rogi/Pimpim anyday.

Give us a good match in QF

I don't think his game looked really great today but he got the work done, in straights set as well and that's good enough. But surely can't afford to make those easy fh errors like today.

Roger's game was great today. 23 errors in 3 sets isn't bad at all.

I dont think it was great, Baghdadis gave the first 2 sets away and Federer was just being consistent but in the 3rd set Roger was forced to raise his game and he did.
Still think he played much better in his first 2 rounds compared to rnd 3 and 4.

Some of his volleys were terrible today  :o It will be deadly against Agassi. I hope Roger will play better and better once the tourney stretches itself into the bigger stages....like what he did last year

yeah I wonder why did he suddenly look a bit off after that amazing match vs Suzuki?

and I thought we heard how much he had improved on his volleys during Kooyong, but it just lookes very :o these past 2 matches?

do you guys think he's just not finding his form suddenly or he's saving energy for tough route ahead?

And please shave Rogi, always look kind of pissed when he's not clean shaven :p

I have a feeling Roger has been playing within himself, even today it was only in the 3rd set that he began to raise his level and serve much better as a reaction to Marcos's improvement.

Guess the Agassi match will tell the story ;)

I'm not really enjoying that though. Even today, it was close in the TB, he was down 0-3, it's only about few points here and there in tennis. But he know what he's doing and he won, that's all I care.

Guess the Agassi match will tell the story ;)

And I hope Rogi will be the one telling the story, not otherwise :tape:

Yeah, the first two matches might have been more inspiring, more great shots. Today was a show of efficiency. In the first two sets, Baghdatis made quite a few errors, and Roger just profited from that without too much initiative himself. In the third, just when Baghdatis made his beautiful FH points, Roger answered with a concincing service game, and when he was down in the tiebreak he did not panick and won in straight sets. He might not have won the most beautiful points today, but he won the important ones. Come on guys, there is nothing to complain ;)

BTW: Did somebody notice Agassi's low service speed, very often less then 180 km/h. Unless the machine was wrong, this should give Roger a good way to attack Agassi's serve. Had Johansson just returned slightly better, I feel he could have won today.

Good job Dirk and WyverN. I am impressed and pleased with your confidence about Roger. That's how it should be. He is no underdog. As much as it everyone seems to be complaining about him not playing well and all that, Roger will come out firing for the quarterfinal to prove his place as #1. Agassi may have looked more impressive, but it's not because he played better. It's simply because Roger makes it seem as if he is practicing but still winnning: there is a level of ease on the eyes when he plays. So, people think he is not working or not doing anything.

Provided Roger comes out to play, he should win in straights. I just hope he does not have any lose game or dips in concentration like he has been having in each match. Provided he does not, this match will be over quickly.

To be honest, I first held my breath, when I read what Roger said, but than I took a closer look at the question - itīs almost as dumb as the >smeaking away< b...sh.. at the USO,canīt blame Roger for that answer.I just hope Andre takes it the right way and isnīt pissed.
The thing that bothers me is that, the guy who asked, that stupid question is without a dout very pleased with himself - hope he stepped into some dog poo on his way home!

Well, they have been rude to him in the past weeks. First,he lost his serve, and they kept asking him why he isn't playing well. It is not like he has lost a sets or somethimg. Now, they consider him the undergdog in that match. Also, the media talk about how everyone is working hard, but they forget that he probably work his ass off too. He might not be at his best, but it is not like he sucks. I would have snapped too.

These journalists are just toying with them. They can be just as disrespectful to Andre, even after all the years he has put in.

Q. You didn't have that many Grand Slam quarterfinals where the majority of people see you as an underdog. How do you feel in that position?
ANDRE AGASSI: I suppose it was a matter of time (smiling). Roger's earned the respect he deserves. I want to make him go out there and prove it to me again. That's what it's about. So whatever the seedings are, whatever the expectations are, it's more important being the favorite when the tournament's over with.

I was surprised at Federer's comments because they were rather uncharacteristic, but in context they were understandable - the media were asking him about a match-up with Agassi when the latter was still on court with Johansson, which Federer was quick to point out, and they suggested to him that the world no. 1 was the one who needed to raise his level to beat the world no. 8. That's what riled him. That said, I really don't think it's true that Federer has managed to beat Agassi when not playing his best - I suppose the IW match was the one where he was playing badly early on, making a lot of unforced errors on the backhand side, and scraped through thanks to that miracle forehand pass at 4-4 in the third, but he's had to play well all the other times and most have still been tight. Heck, in that RR match he threw everything he had at Agassi, went for broke and hit 63 winners, and yet Agassi still had the match on his racket in the final set tiebreak.

The surface and the crowd support will favour Agassi, and it'll really be about who manages to dictate play at the crucial moments since both are such dominating players in their different ways. Federer will certainly be trying to prove a point, but he mustn't let that cloud his focus and make him hit stupid shots in trying to blast Agassi off the court - he always plays his best when he's clinical and efficient. Nothing would give me more satisfaction than to see him beat Agassi easily at the AO, where the crowd is so vocally behind him and where he has such a great record, but realistically, if I go in expecting a demolition job then I'm going to be disappointed. I expect this to be as tight as most of Federer's wins have been. I don't think he's playing that poorly, his only really bad performance was against Nieminen and he has already had the experience of someone pressurising him in the match with Suzuki, albeit in a totally different way to Agassi. It's certainly ridiculous for the media to suggest that being pushed to a tiebreak third set by Baghdatis raises doubts over his readiness for Agassi - heaven forbid that somebody is actually able to play well and push Federer close in a set!

I'll be watching this from 8.30 tomorrow morning, it should certainly be interesting because I'll be watching with my brother, whose favourite player happens to be the A-Train. The last Federer-Agassi match we actually saw together was Agassi's last win, in Miami in 2002, so the atmosphere could get a little tense... allez Fed!

That said, I really don't think it's true that Federer has managed to beat Agassi when not playing his best - ... allez Fed!

Roger did not play his best in the conditions on the 2nd day of their USO qf. it was barely tennis on either side, but he controlled the elements far better and won

I don't think that I'll be able to watch the match.3:30 am is too early.I hope that I will read Roger-win tomorrow.

True, but those were exceptional circumstances - Federer obviously couldn't play his normal game in the wind, but then neither could Agassi, and in that situation the man who can get cheaper points on the serve more easily is the favourite. When the two of them have been able to play their normal game, it's been tight, as in the first three sets of the US Open match, the TMC RR and in the IW semifinal. After all, Federer may have been playing badly in the first set of the IW match, but at 3-4 down in the third he had to hit a forehand winner down the line right onto the sideline, after a marathon rally, to save a breakpoint that would have allowed Agassi to serve for the match if he had converted it. My point is, if you look at the forehand passes Federer had to come up with on the run to win the RR encounter and to win that crucial point at IW, you can't say that he wasn't forced to come up with this best. On Rebound Ace, where Agassi's game is at its best, I'm sure the same will apply.

Interesting that this is their first match outside the US since their first meeting in Basel in 1998 - I saw a clip on Eurosport today, Federer with Kratochvil-like floppy hair and a tendency to get frustrated easily. Federer said in an interview over the clip that he knew he had no chance to win that day, bearing in mind he'd only recently been a ballboy at the same tournament, but then they contrasted it with the clip of him winning the US Open match. Ah, victory has never tasted sweeter than that one did...

I Heck, in that RR match he threw everything he had at Agassi, went for broke and hit 63 winners, and yet Agassi still had the match on his racket in the final set tiebreak.

True, but Federer also made well over 50 unforced errors in that match. In the TMC Final, Federer hit around 40+ winners, but didnt make near the ammount of errors.

I think Federer's game was far more affected as he is generally a aggressive player and goes for the lines. Guys who tend to rally and play with a degree of safety are very good players in the wind. Look at how well Hewitt played against Haas, he was virtually unaffected. I think the wind in that match actually helped Agassi as he is a very good wind player.

Andre first up though.
2.5 hours until the match, about to go there and enjoy the atmosphere. Its baking in Melbourne today but conditions should be fine in the evening.

My friend is even bringing swiss flags so with some luck we will be shown on tv ;)

For some reason I am feeling confident and I think Roger wants to make a statement especially after the big fuss made about his interview. My prediction: Roger wins 6-4 7-5 6-2.
