This set was awesome! First the fantastic start by Suzuki forcing Federer to his very best. The best moments were on Suzuki's serve when he got into the net, hit a deep good volley to Federer's forehand, put away down the line by the great man. He learned from that and his next 2 volleys were as good, going deep to Federer's backhand, only to be put away as comfortably by Roger's backhand, down the line

Set point was really funny too :D

His net % is going down and Roger is getting to him. He won't last much longer. Roger does have this problem with unknown players. He played a very good two sets. Very few errors and a good amount of winners, but you can't beat a great ground player always coming to the net on this surface.

Oh I know what the difference is. For like a year I haven't seen anyone play completely his own game on both serves, dictate play against Roger. But Suzuki does and Roger has to adapt to it. Nobody else has been capable of forcing him so much.

I taped it and will watch it tonight, looking forward to it very much. I fully agree, Dirk, it is not so bad to be tested in the 2nd round of a grand slam tourney. It was me who was worried about a too easy draw up to the QF. ;)

The stats are very clear, though, 50 winners for Roger, 29 for Suzuki. But stats don't always tell the whole story.

Nieminen also knows to volley, if I remember correctly.

This has got to the best match anybody had played Roger so far. Scores doesn't tell it but the tennis. Too good to watch.

This Suzuki motor is REALLY good! He's doing the same like what Rogi always does to others, mixing things up and looks like a really good s/v player we seldom get to watch these days. He has a good mix of serves too, and those body serves is troubling Roger a lot. Very very well played, Suzuki :worship: and for Roger to still come out in straights set win :worship:

I really haven't seen any top players able to play Roger in such refreshing and entertaining way for the past year. You can clearly see Rogi was really happy and almost emotional and mumbling his way through when courier interview him

The commentators said that the reason Suzuki is ranked so low is because he spends a lot of the time playing in Japan where he is very famous and gets paid a lot. If he spent time on the main tour he would probably be within the top 30.

You can clearly see Rogi was really happy and almost emotional and mumbling his way through when courier interview him

isy, i had thought it could be a slaughter to Suzuki. I did hear about this Japanese, he entered the GS main draw many times, but never watch his match for a chance. Not many ones dare to choose serve-volley to play against Roger, except Henman I guess? coz Roger will pass them to the hell. But this Suzuki has stunning serving, over 210km/hr, and quick reaction to the net. what surprise me is he also made some amazing angle of forehand and backhand lines, which pretty much higher than his ranking.

and i remember he made some incredible net drop, which Roger can only smile it off

BTW, can you post Suzuki's quote here?

your instinct does precise :p I just want to watch how Roger slaughter a Japanese, but God, this is a really good tennis match! And you should also watch the 1st set, he even broke Roger  and like you saw, he did have many chances to break again. Suzuki kept that level in 3 sets all the time, though he didn't win any set, but all of the 3 are very very tight.

another amazing shot is in the 2nd game of 3rd set, when Roger played two big angle forehand into two different corners of the baseline, he had thought he already another great winner. but surprise both me and him, and you all, this Suzuki runs very fast and saved that seemingly-impossible ball!! more surprised, he made a very difficult running forehand crossing the court, which Roger realized too late, and missed it! another amazing shot is in the 2nd game of 3rd set, when Roger played two big angle forehand into two different corners of the baseline, he had thought he already another great winner. but surprise both me and him, and you all, this Suzuki runs very fast and saved that seemingly-impossible ball!! more surprised, he made a very difficult running forehand crossing the court, which Roger realized too late, and missed it! This is one of the most fabulous shots in the match.

 yeah, that was really funny when I saw Rogi suddenly realised that shot is coming back and had to turn back and ran for it, made it though but still lost the point later. Those are the times it's just like Rogi is playing vs himself How he always makes his opponents play one more shot.

Just too many great shots this match, from both players :worship: I really hope everybody here gets to watch it, truly entertaining and high quality.

Nov, I can imagine how you're like yesterday, tough match ahead tomorrow :o

What a great match!

I do feel that it is good that Rogi was tested- he showed he has utter focus and dedication to get the match done in straight sets. Had Suzuki played the way he did against Safin or Roddick they would have been tied in knots.

Roger's level of play was just brilliant and it bodes well for his next match(es) to be able to raise his game at the right time and be fully confident.

Then there is that solitary gent. He wouldn't be playing. While his 127 mates do that, this man from Mars — or wherever it is possible to suspend a few widely understood laws of physics while turning something as mundane as hitting a fuzzy ball with graphite and kevlar into a sublime symphony — would be composing yet another masterpiece. So much for Roger Federer's game.

The other, played at stratospheric levels, has but a solitary practitioner, unafraid of the heights, untouched by earthly vincibility. :worship:

I know David did not play his best game. IF I do not remember bad, I saw him tofday on tv inteview here in Argentina. He said it was hard, the he got a bit lost sometimes and IF i do not remember bad, other times they play together the matches were hard ( David lost??) Anyway, I think David is a strong player, ask Roger! Guess he is still dealing with the lost of his father. Must be something hard to pass. And worst to keep your head on focus.
Hope he can do it again today. As well as Guillermo.

I could see the game. Im glad Roger played so well. And he did not loose respect for the insects and, more. he was relaxed and enjoyed it. The surely cut here some parts and for sure they did not show any interview after the game. But TO my eyes I found this things.
Roger is expressing a bit more what he feels. I like it, JUST a simply gesture or a some words.
Id love to know what did he said on the first game. NO IDEA, the stupid latin reporters of the game talked and they did not even understood him. But roger talked a lot.
Happiness was all I saw on Rogis face when he did the shot so close to the net
Suzuki. A gentleman. How nice , like asking sorry a couple of times and the way he said bye to the public.
Roger energy at the end of the game, when he won, looks a bit like the energy when he won the us open.. That scream, jump, , floor.... incredible

This is my first post, though I've been lurking (aka reading) for awhile. I agree w/Shy etc. I thought Roger looked very unsettled today and I'm concerned. Meanwhile, Safin is sipping mint juleps & sharpening his knives during his cakewalk to the semis. He smelled blood in 20-18 tiebreak in Houston. The outcome of that is 50-50. Hope Roche has given him some advice on it.

What concerns me is that it looks like he hasn't settled in w/Tony yet. It looks like Tony advised him to be more aggressive, but it's not really suited to his personality, or he hasn't grown into it yet; hence his game is unsettled right now. He looks ungrounded for the first time in recent yrs.

If anyone missed Roger's last summer match v. Baggy, coming up in 4th round - Baggy is a sweet kid from Cyrprus who won one set. (Marcos Baghdatis) Enjoyable to watch, but no pushover & will be good warm-up for 1/4 w/AA or JJ.

(Speaking of Safin, goddamn ESPN for not showing upcoming match of the Mad Bomber v. the Midget (Safin @6'5"-Rochus @5'5"). Sounds like fun; much moreso than this tedious runs of AR's bashball & Hewitt. When are they going to figure out they aren't selling deodorant?)

I haven't seen the whole match yet but Roger never played this guy before and it took him awhile to adjust to his style. Roger made 10 errors and hit 50 winners. I think he looked eager and very sharp. Suzuki played a great match but Roger raised his game and won. Suzuki would give a lot of players problems yesterday and beat a lot of top players imo. That Roger was able to get through in straight sets is a credit to him.

Meanwhile, Safin is sipping mint juleps & sharpening his knives during his cakewalk to the semis. He smelled blood in 20-18 tiebreak in Houston. The outcome of that is 50-50. Hope Roche has given him some advice on it.

While a in form Safin would be very hard to beat on this surface, he can't play Roger until the semi finals and you can't say someone as unstable as Marat will definetly make the semis no matter how well he is playing. Hrbaty could definetly trouble him. Besides Roger has Andre/Jachim first.

We all have our different opinions but personally I havent seen Roger play so well in the opening few rounds of a slam, perhaps Wimbledon last year. As Dirk said he will probably only get better for the upcoming matches which is a great sign.

agree, same quick as Tim's, but better angle, and much "sharper" if you say. And did you watch he played two weird short drop front of the net?? this is incredible! he even waved his hands and seems to apologize to Roger
They were frame shots, the ball touched the upper part of the frame and not so much on strings, causing the ball to bounce very low, so a mishit and apology.

Dirk

i agree with the first one, coz i saw the ball touched the frame, and made a very weird short drop. But not the second one, this is a quick one, Suzuki plays the second drop shot front of the net only by his good instinct. Roger can't reach it because it's too short, a very wonderful shot! And then Suzuki waved his hands again, and smile to Roger  seems to say:"oh, sorry. but even myself didn't imagine how i can make this shot"

The thin, dark-haired guy is Reto Staubli, his friend and training partner (was also a pro); the bigger balding guy is Pavel Kovac, his physio. His *trainer* is Pierre Paganini, who's bald, has glasses and is very fit-looking (and scary imo). You don't see him in Roger's box because he doesn't travel with him generally - although they were together Australia before Christmas I believe.

Hi, TenHound, Welcome :wavey:

But I don't agree that Rogi was shaky and unsettled in the last match. You just can't call him shaky while he actually put on such a brilliant and shining performance. You can't expect him to crush his opponents every single time, actually a match of this kind is way more fun to eyes and entertaining to fans. I'd want bunches of that than the so-called big match between big names which actually turns out to be a boring meal. Rogi was obviously having fun out there, so was I :D You should learn to enjoy it :wavey:

To clarify, I thoroughly enjoyed Rog's last match. Absolutely delightful. More fun than watching another match v. Hewitt or AR. But I'm nervous about Safin, all the moreso since he has Rog's old coach. Add to that that Rog got rattled when #2xx served to his body & came in. Add that to Safin's power....

But obviously Rog's vastly stronger mentally, as even the Houston tiebreak showed. I'm heartened by everyone's confidence and will try to feel moreso myself, remembering to compare this to his other early round matches rather than looking ahead. Great contests coming up next week to be sure w/Nadal & JJ still around to test the vets.

I'm with you TenHound. I'm a little concerned, because although he had a lot of unbelievable shots yesterday, I thought Roger was a little off. But then I think at how bad he looked in Toronto last year- specially against Johansson in the semis-, and how he was able to raise his game when it mattered (in the final against Roddick) and my confidence in Roger's mental strength returns. I'm hoping he has an easy match today.

BTW, does anyone know if Roger's post match interview is posted anywhere? I haven't seen in in the official Aus Open website...

I did not see any weakness from Roger in the Suzuki match- especially considering it was so early in the tournament, I think this was the most brilliant and focused 2nd round GS match that I have seen Rogi play- Suzuki was that good, Roger just had to respond.

He will definitely pick up the things he needs to pick up especially in the later rounds- and because Suzuki's game is so unorthodox and in-your-face and it was the 1st time they played it took Roger about half of the 1st set to get used to it and figure out how to deal with it- that was why he was unsettled.

This evening, Roger Federer beat Japanese qualifier Takao Suzuki 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. It was an amazing match that the score didn't indicate because Suzuki really made Federer play really hard. There were quite a few moments when the normally calm and collected Federer showed emotion-- i.e. talking to himself, screaming in disgust when he missed easy shots, frustrated when he missed Suzuki's many powerful serves.

Anyways, just wanted to give my two cents on the match. Here's the interview that took place on court afterwards w/ Jim Courier:

JC: Roger, you must be awfully disappointed with the level of play you showed today. That was a poor match.
RF: (smiling) Thank you. Yeah...it was a fantastic atmosphere, fantastic match. Thanks to you (points to the crowd) of course.
But thanks to Takao Suzuki. It was very entertaining. I'm very looking forward to the next time I play him.
JC: Now can you imagine this guy, started playing here in the qualifying round. It was such a competitive match against you. You clearly couldn't have expected it. Did you have to raise your game to take him, or was playing just normal good enough?
RF: No, today I had to play a good match to win. Good enough is not enough.
JC: Even from you? Come on! Don't be modest.
RF: (smiles) Even from me. He was up a break in the first set and I had to really play a great breakpoint to get back in the match. Who knows if he keeps playing so well, I could've lost the first set and match but I turned it around so it was good.
JC: Alright, tell us about this one nifty shot around the net. Clearly Roche (Federer's new coach) has been working on that with you right? That's the shot you guys have been practicing?
RF: The forehand on the run...Uh...next to n...next to the post...
JC: Let me translate, around the net post. (laughter heard from the crowd)
RF: Thank you. yes, around the net post. Geez, my emotions are still high (that's why he was stumbling w/ his words). I've been working on that with him for 2 weeks but I'm happy it worked tonight. (lots of laughter from crowd)
JC: Next up is Jarkko Nieminen.
RF: Yeah, you must have checked the draw. I don't look that far ahead. Was just concentrating on this match.
JC: Tell us the strategy. He's not watching. He's asleep right now.
RF: Oh he's sleeping? Okay. (smiles) Uh...I'll play my game.
JC: Which one? From the baseline, from the net, around the net post? What are you going to do?
RF: I'll play... aggressive (laughs). So...yeah, he's a tough competitor. Good player. So let's not joke too much, I don't want to go out in the third round. He's my age. We've known each other for a long time.
JC: Well, thanks for a very enjoyable second round encounter. Best match on center court so far, for sure.

Good morning everybody! (And goodnight to my Asian friends!)
Just woke up and started watching this match. Ouch, Roger isn't playing nearly as dominant as he could and should be. Even more, his on court appearance and gestures doesn't look like he really seems to care. He aleady hit 12 unforced errors in set 1.
Well, he just won the 1st set, so the trouble isn't that big, but his game needs to improve if he faces Joachim Johansson!

Roger played a sloppy match today, 13 ue's on that first set. this is harsh, sorry for jarrko, but probably saved Roger some more bad shots that he usually never misses on a good day. that overhead bh smash was just so beautifully executed, even Jarrko had to applause.

Just bad placement on his volleys and chips. It's  since roger is the best chipper and slicer on the tour and his volleys are great generally. i'm not worried about anything. Roger will do what he knows he must do in order for his next matches. It's good that he experimented with some things and learned what to do and not to do. I think maybe we are being too picky but at the same time he has always been known to hit short approaches.

Pete Sampras apparently had a 31 game winning streak in 1994 as well. Thomas Muster once strung 35 consecutive wins together.

yeah...I think eveybody probably also finds it funny that this guy who was just hitting winners all over the court minutes ago looking so cool suddenly turned into this small boy who won't stop laughing at himself

But it's nice and he finished off jim question saying he will play agressive ( yeah, aggressive enough today :o ) and he had known Niemienen for a long time and he's a very nice guy. No wonder everybody finds Rogi nice, coz he thinks others are nice too

Who do you all prefer Rogi playing next? Robredo or Baghdatis?

Yeah Roger the small boy :) I like it when champions can be like that

Well Jarkko is a nice player! He's one of my favs, didn't like it they had to play each other in this round already

I'm afraid it'll be Baghdatis :scared:

For the rest of the tour these stats would be considered solid.

Stats are not too bad. If he wants to keep this expertiment up for the next match let him. I have a feeling he will do it better next time. Baghdatis doesn't need to be a threat to us fans. Roger knows his game now and should win in 3 sets if he plays him. Marcos doesn't have the game to beat Roger so please calm down fans. Roger knows what he is doing. It will take a little bit of time to learn Roche's lessons.

On Roger's uncharacteristic "sloppy" play -- Andy Roddick said something sometime back that may explain what's happening to Roger now. Andy said (ok, am paraphrasing it) that other players lose, including him, even as they're working their asses off whereas Roger loses because he has the luxury of being bored.

Roger's interview explained his game plan for Jarko. Pretty interesting. Looking forward to Roger smacking down Marcos Sunday. :)

Baghdatis is next! They've met once before and I think we all remember that encounter! The second round of last years US Open, the score was 6-2 6-7 6-3 6-1.
Baggy is in fine form, having just trashed 13th seed Robredo 7-6 6-4 6-1.
Fedex has to play better than today if he wants to beat the guy from Cyprus. I'm looking forward to the match!

Oh shit, this is the matchup I less prefer. Yeah Stefan, Rogi will need to play MUCH better than today if he wants to beat him. Marcos will be more experienced than in USO now, and teenagers & Rogi matchup always worry me :help:

Ytben it's time for the voice of reason. Roger knows Marcos's game now so that will not be a factor. Roger could even dare I say experiment on him and still win in straights. I just hope if he does it that he executes it better than he did today. I would love to say Roger beats him without losing his serve but I think he will lose his serve once. Roger will break him 4 times and there may be a breaker in the match somewhere. Really Ytben, Roger has owned much better players than Baghdatis so I don't understand the worry.

Yeah the real danger is Agassi, I was hoping Johansson would take him out but now that he is at 11-11 in the 5th set against Lopez I don't think that is likely.

 How did I know you'll be the "voice of reason" for me Dirk when I posted my message. I know my worry is a bit unreasonable, but can't help it unfortunately :help:

Yeah Wyv, I just watched Agassi-Dent, gosh Andre was playing flawlessly in that third set. But Marcos first, so good luck in your fourth round Rogi :bounce:

Views are different, ;) I am more worried about Johansson than about Agassi, but you have a valid point with his long match by now, and he also got treatment, but first things first: Baghdatis in Sunday. I have not seen his match against Roger at the US Open, so I am not really clear for myself, whether he was overestimated at that time, there was a little hype about taking a set, I know, but one doesn't win a match with one set only :)
