Tennis Channel negotiating to buy Scottsdale

The Tennis Channel is in negotiation to buy the men’s tournament in Scottsdale from IMG and the deal could be done by the end of this week, sources told TennisReporters.net. The Arizona Men’s Tennis Classic tournament has been without a title sponsor for two years now and this year, has been unable to sign any marquee players for its Feb. 21-27 tournament, losing top US draw Andre Agassi to the event in Dubai. Agassi is believed to be getting in the neighborhood of a $500,000 guarantee.

In September 2003, IMG sold the women’s Scottsdale tournament to another group in Dubai for a record price. The Tennis Channel owns the broadcast rights to the Scottsdale men’s tournament. It’s is believed to be the first time that US men’s tournament will be owned by a cable network. …

Wow, interesting. Andy probably chose not to play here because Davis Cup is the following week (or, they couldn't pay him a decent guarantee. Pick one.).

He played last year, and it was a miserable tournament for him. He was still getting over a back injury and they kept making him the night match where in the desert at that time of the year it's high 40s/low 50s (I was there for his night match against JMG and I thought my mom and I were gonna get hypothermia, it was REALLY BAD. and we're from New England). Plus, it was the only time in all the times I've ever been to Arizona that i'd ever seen rain - it messed up 2 of his matches, he had to play 2 in one day which he said he hadn't done in years, it was just messed up. I'm sure he knew he had to cut back on his schedule this year and of all the tourneys he plays in February in the US, he doesn't have any loyalty to this one like he has with San Jose or Memphis.

Plus with the fact that it's being played almost 2 weeks EARLIER this year than last year, the weather is just bound to be horrific. I'm so glad he's not playing, and I feel badly for the players that are, because it just seems bound to be a mess.

It's pretty amazing that someone can predict the weather bound to be horrific 2 weeks before. :worship:

No need to feel bad for the players, they will receive their paychecks which are a lot higher than most of the people working outdoor in the same condition for longer hours.

By Tennis Week
02/17/2005

The Tennis Channel has evolved from tennis programming provider to a major player in the sport. The Tennis Channel has televised the ATP Tour for three years and now it owns the Scottsdale stop on the ATP Tour, which will be called The Tennis Channel Open.

The world's first 24-hour cable network devoted to tennis and other racquet sports announced today it has reached an agreement to buy the $380,000 Scottsdale tournament, currently known as the Arizona Men's Tennis Classic, from IMG, the world's largest sports marketing and management company.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Purchase prices of an ATP International Series tournament can range from $400,000 to $800,000. IMG is an investor in The Tennis Channel so the sale benefits both partners.

IMG will manage and operate the 2005 Tennis Channel Open, set for February 21st-27th . IMG's Gus Sampras, brother of 14-time Grand Slam champion Pete Sampras, is the tournament director. Starting in 2006, the Tennis Channel will assume "all managerial and operational responsibilities" for the event, according to The Tennis Channel press release announcing the event.

"Owning the tournament will permit the network to continue its aggressive promotion of the sport by presenting it like no other," Tennis Channel president and founder Steve Bellamy said in a statement.

IMG owns or operates several tournaments on the ATP and WTA Tours, including the Pacific Life Open at Indian Wells, the Nasdaq-100 Open, Chennai, Sydney, the Open Gaz de France in Paris and The Bank of the West Classic in Stanford.

ATP rules prohibit one entity or person from holding an ownership interest in "more than two Masters Series tournaments or more than an aggregate of four tournament class memberships regardless of category."

The Tennis Channel, which has owned the Scottsdale broadcast rights since 2002, will telecast more than 40 hours of play from the tournament this month, including the singles and doubles quarterfinals, semifinals and finals.

IMG, which was bought by American sportsman and leverage buyout specialist is Ted Forstmann, last September said in a statement the sale benefits both companies.

"This sale is a mutually beneficial way to advance our business relationship with The Tennis Channel, which started in August 2001 when the concept was first unveiled at the U.S. Open," IMG senior vice president Gavin Forbes said. "The Tennis Channel is great for the game. It is a natural evolution for them to be directly responsible for contributing to the growth and success of the ATP Tour, and pro tennis in Arizona. We are committed to helping the Tennis Channel continue to prosper."

Defending champion Vince Spadea, Tommy Haas, James Blake, Taylor Dent, Mark Philippoussis and Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan are among the players who have entered the event, which has long been a popular tune-up for the year's first Masters Series event in Indian Wells. Founded in 1986, Scottsdale has played host to several Grand Slam champions including four-time Scottsdale champion Andre Agassi, two-time tournament champion Lleyton Hewitt, John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras and Andy Roddick.

"This move shoots straight at the core of our mission, which is to repackage the way the game is presented and promoted," Bellamy said.

Owning the tournament affords The Tennis Channel the opportunity to experiment with its coverage as well possibly stream some future match footage over its web site The Tennis Channel.com.

Kiefer is not defending his final points here :p
Why should he when he is putting up an economic tournament schedule trying to save flying hours and big jet lags...
Would be pretty useless playing in Europe for the indoor season, going to Scottsdale and then going back the same amount of time zones right the next week to play in South Africa Davis Cup, just to go after the Davis Cup again to Indian Wells TMS! LOL

Grrrr I was looking forward to see him in qualies.

Anyway, doesn't look good. It's supposed to rain today and tomorrow. So far, no rain, that means it may rain tomorrow and Saturday, where first 2 rounds of quali to be played.

I know, but he was so nice last year and he's the only player I wished him luck ;) I was thinking to cast my magic spell on him again this year and he will win it all. :p

None of these are cable. VOOM is HD satellite and lack many channels that my household wants. Qwest is TV services, it's through VDSL and use up my phone line. I have never heard about 4DTV :p
