OK, honey bunches, "flavor of the month" means that you're mine for this month. I will decide if I keep you or kick your tired ass to the curb (read: dump you) at the end of the month, because with many things the "flavor" doesn't last.
And, I will not explain "tazzie" because that's for me to know and you....to guess.

No, every one of their meetings were on clay. I don't think his draw is that bad either. If he displays the same focus that he did last year, I can see him breaking past the quarters-even past Coria if they have the chance to meet-to maybe the final. I looked at the draw and Roger doesn't exactly have a cake walk.

jazz_girl
01-14-2005, 01:31 AM
No, the first half is very tough. Although David could meet Hewitt and Coria in QF (I think) and Roddick in SF. It could have been much worse. And let's keep in mind that Gonzalez will play a final tomorrow and will be tired and I have no idea how Ferrer does in this surfaces.
And I don't even want to imagine him facing Youzhny...

I don't either, but if Youzhny can get past the Hewitt quarter, then he will face David or Coria-and may be too mentally spent to present much of a challenge.

jazz_girl
01-14-2005, 01:52 AM
It's Coria in the fourth round and in QF could be Hewitt, Youzhny or Nadal among others...I'm not sure which one to pick! LOL

jazz_girl
01-14-2005, 01:57 AM
Ok, I've been checking Ferrer's results from last year in fast surfaces, and the best he did was at the beginning of the year reaching QF, from then on he lost in the first and second rounds. I'm a bit more confident now.

He's the great unknown. I think, however, that David can get through him. I wouldn't measure Andreev's result against Ferrero at the FO last year as a barometer of how David will do. Andreev's an impressive player, don't get me wrong, but I don't think that he will beat David. He would have to get through Gonzalez first.

Jazz thanks for the draw. Well guess there will be some nice matches to looking forward too. Guess the first round will be tough, not only because its Ferrer but just because its the first round from the first tournement he plays.

But well think he has a good change to win.

As I said on another Forum - the least said from me about Ferrer the better  My natural pessimism comes to the fore at the very mention of his name! His defeat of David in the 1st round of Hamburg last year was the worst live tennis experience of my life - he's a kind of poor man's Coria - runs and chases after everything and never gives up, and he obviously has the ability to frustrate our man big time  Of course that was on slow clay (Ferrer's favoured surface) and the Australian courts will suit David's game better- but I don't believe David will be looking forward to this match one little bit  - and all his Team were truly miserable in Hamburg and they suffered just as much as I did so I doubt they're ecstatic either!!!!!!! I forsee loads of temper tantrums and racquet throwing  and David behaving badly - and I'm actually glad that British TV almost certainly won't show it because I don't want to see that match up ever again!!!!

VAMOS DAVID - PLEASE GET REVENGE FOR ME!!!!!

Dave is 3rd match on Vodafone I am not sure how much of it I will see, but I will have to be in plenty of places at once.

Zabaleta vs Kimmich
Gonzo vs Acasuso
Ferrer vs Nalbandian
Almagro vs Reynolds
Pavel vs Mutis
Mantilla vs Hernych
Cañas vs Guccione
Saretta vs Healey

Yes - many desparate women here are relying on you

Yeah Ceci, Moyá lost. I kind of see it coming. It was very difficult for him to beat García in Chennai, and he hasn't been playing well at all lately. I know he won a title already, but he didn't play well at all there...I'd say Srichaphan choked...
The good news is that he didn't have anything to defend, so it's not so bad for him.

jazz_girl

They showed David practicing with Eduardo and laughing a bit, and also walking out of the court with 3 bodyguards. The court was full of people watching him practice.
They didn't show an interview  maybe he didn't want to talk...

You're ESPN is so much better than ours. We get to see exciting things like Poker, Jump Rope, Worlds Strongest Man (OK- guilty pleasure- I actually like to watch that) and Spelling Bee!! The only way we get to see Gaston or David is if they are playing an American (or walking behind one somewhere) or if there aren't any tapes of Serena they can show. Maybe they saved the interview for later?

He was pretty terrible Nova - but - to be fair - this is his first REAL match since his Father died, and the commentators were saying it was 40 degrees C out there and it was a gruelling match  Ferrer is a fighter and it was never going to be easy - as you know - I said as soon as I saw the draw that Ferrer was going to win so I'm pleasantly surprised. And I don't think he wasn't trying - just getting "down" and sad and stressed and couldn't find the fight for a while in that heat. Eurosport kept on showing hs brother and Eduardo in the stands - they looked worse than he did bless them  At one stage I actually screamed at the TV - "David don't do this to Eduardo and Javier - they deserve better!" Ugh - what a ghastly start - hope things can get better from now on.

yeah! rosie, i watched the last 2 sets of his matches!! finally, our TV can be kind to me, and agreed to broadcast his match live! his serving is much terrible, powerless!! And maybe it's too hot, he seems not that concentrated and energetic!! look at the statistics, those two Davids have been broken for 18 times totally!! and both of them made many unforced errors! it's not a good match, but luckily he won it. Ferrer played more active and positive than him, he runs all the corners around the court, and he tried to save every ball David hit! if Ferrer didn't made so many mistakes, he deserves that winning. have to say, two davids both serves terribly.......

The added bonus was getting to see the last set and a half of the match on ESPN :yeah:

I hope that David can get some rest now and be ready for Thursday :)
i saw he played some amazing backhand winners in the late part of the match. and glad to see he didn't throw any racquet in such a long tough match!!

You must have missed the racquet throwing Nova - it was definately there  From both of them!

well for the next round he has to face S. Ventura. Ventura also needed 5 sets to get his victory.

H2H is still 0-0
that Ventura only played two tourneys last year and both lost in the first round, so i know nothing about him.

Then you missed the 3rd - that was the worst - he was depressed and hot and Ferrer was playing well.

I agree, the third set was the worst, he looked completly lost and desperate. But he still tried to find new variants to win. He was better in fourth set, more concentrated than Ferrer and I actually liked how he played in the fifth.
I don't think he likes to play against Ferrer at all, and it was defenitly not his day.
But the crowd gave him a standing ovation at the end and he appreciated it, cause he signed lots of autographs and thanked the crowd.
I'm pretty sure he'll do better from now on, remember he usually starts this way in tournaments and gets better as rounds go by, so I know he can do it and I'm sure he can beat Ventura.

His confidence level should soar after this match. I, like many of you, was certain that he was done, but he hung right on in there.

Ventura is very tough and runs a lot of balls down and in a way is similar to Ferrer. It was an ugly match with the right result.

He can't play any worse  That match has put me in a niggly, miserable mood all day  And PLEASE tell me Ventura isn't another Ferrer clone

me too :o i delayed my lunch totally 4 hours, coz i have no appetite at all after watching his match, it's too terrible :p

He seems not good at coping with Ferrer type players: high speed of running all of the court to save the ball. I haven't watched any match of Ventura, maybe another unknown bomb?

I checked his stats and last year he had some great results in clay challengers and bad one in hardcourt. So I have some hope.
Besides, he lost both matches he played in Chennai and Doha in the first round.

They're all ghastly little Coria clones sent to stress me out  Where does Ventura come from anyway? I've never even heard of him?

I have, and he plays very well on clay.
As for Coria, after watching both David and Guillermo play, I'm not so sure anymore David can beat him, at least not sure in this tournament...

David's quotes from the Ferrer match:
"I'm happy to win, but I expected maybe a little shorter match - it was so long, so tough,"
"In the fourth set we were both were very, very tired, and I just tried to make him run a lot. I think that was the key. He's a very tough player; I always lose to him on clay courts."

me too, but i never watched him play, so have no idea of his type.
Coria's match is quite normal, nothing new, just like his typical winning style. Berdych is lacking of experience, and approached the net wrong timingly always. Now he has to face Mello in the 2nd round, also not easy to pass.

Ferrer did run a lot.......too much running....
i can see why they got so many errors. This match is too long, and especially under high temperature hot weather, can't control the ball comfortably lacking of strength

Coria has to get through both Mello and Ferrero, and they aren't cake walks by any stretch of the imagination. This match may be what David needed to get back in the swing of things.

Too long, too tough, too many errors but at least he won. He really needs an easy, short match next. Playing almost 4 hours running about under that hot sun is no joke.
