I'm worried that I will sleep during the matches. It's inevitable perhaps, but I was able to catch the tailend of the Roddick match last year after I got home late from work.

*Ljubica*
01-09-2005, 10:23 AM
Well I'll probably sleep through all of the matches and find out the results in the morning!! Starting at mid-night and finishing at about 7.00am isn't so good for me when I have to work  And am I the only person here that DOESN'T want David to draw the Duck - at least not in the 1st match anyway? I want him to get a bit of match practice first - the Duck would be too hard for a first match.

I agree, it could be better if he draws Srichaphan. Even worse than the duck would be Federer...

  Federer! Actually I kind of want him in the same group as Gaudio, Massu and Srichaphan! Then he can get some easier matches and, hopefully, a few wins behind him before he has to play Fed or Duck in the Final!!!!

If you think about it, everyone's tough, even the ones ranked behind him: Gaudio beat him in the Bs As final, Massu will fight till the end...and Srichaphan...even though he's in the Chennai final, I know David can beat him again :)

ah, maybe i am the only one here wants he faces Roger :p of course, i prefer they meet in the final, but i won't oppose if even earlier!! Expecting their match for so long time since last year AO QF, almost every match between them two is amazing! :woohoo:

And, everyone please don't be too serious. it's only an exhibition, a warming, an appetizer, we have better AO dinner after that. :)

Ok, I just finished watching Moya vs Srichaphan, and Carlos playing at his worst beat Srichaphan. I lost count of how many times Paradorn served for match, he was always up: 5-2 in the third set, but somehow Carlos managed to win it in tie break...

Hi Rose,
Thanks...I had a great time in Cape Town...it helps to have the perfect man with you though...even if he has the Mother from hell....(who was also there!!!...we stayed in their house....its a long story)...anyway its all back to normal now...back to a new term at school....today the children I teach have been crazy because of the wind!! but thats normal too!!! hopefully we will have wet play tomorrow at break and lunch...( I have playground duty and if it rains I don't)....

Anyway, on to the tennis.....I think it is just typical that we have no tennis coverage...despite paying almost £50 per month for Sky television....but anyway I need to get over this bitterness and concentrate on our guy doing his best...Heres to 2005.....

David's first match will be against Tim Henman - 3rd match on court on Wednesday. Guess that will be about 4.00pm Australian time which makes it about 4.30-5.00am English time  No chance of me following that unless I catch the end when I get up at 5.30am for work. Damned time differences  Jazz and Sigma - you'll probably be OK because it will still only be about midnight where you are - only the poor Europeans will suffer

*Ljubica*
01-11-2005, 07:42 PM
Don't know about live scores Jazz - but I hope you enjoy the coverage if you do stay up. I would love to - but - much as I love David - I just can't do it on a work night  If it was the Oz Open, if it was televised, or even if I knew there was a great live scoreboard, then I probably would get up at 3.00am- but I can't go without my sleep - I get ill without sleep very quickly  - and if I fall asleep at work tomorrow then I soon won't have a job to help me afford all my tennis travels! So - good luck David - I hope for good news when I wake up tomorrow - if the other matches are long then David might still be playing when I get up - I'll sleep with my fingers crossed anyway :)

So would I. According to our news it was a good match - but then they are bound to say that because Henman won  There is a very short report on Tim's web-site.............http://www.timhenman.org

Henman's game can be effective in Australia due to the quick playing conditions.

Tim Henman got his 2005 campaign off to the best possible start by beating defending champion David Nalbandian (ARG) 6-1 7-5 in the first round of the Kooyong Classic in Melbourne on Wednesday.

Henman went into the match with a poor record against the Argentine having lost four of their previous five meetings, with his sole victory coming on the lawns of the All England Club in the fourth round at Wimbledon two years ago.

“It’s a great start to the year – just what I was looking for,” said the British number one.

“Over the years I’ve found David very difficult to play against.

“He returns serve very well and he’s deceptively effective from the baseline, so sometimes it can be difficult to execute my game plan well enough against him to get the right result.

“Beating somebody of his stature is always good for the confidence and it bodes well at the beginning of the year.”

*Ljubica*
01-12-2005, 12:18 PM
Here is part of GWH's report from another Forum about David's match at Kooyong. He generally doesn't want people "using" his reports elsewhere, - but did write a "disclaimer" saying that if Nalbandian/Federer/Gaudio fans wanted to use part of his match reports in their respective Fan Forums he would have no objection - thanks George

Nalbandian/Henman well this performance you could tell it was David's first match of the year and he will only get better. I am not really sure how Henman played as David made plenty of schoolboy errors, especially in the 1st set and 6-1 was justified.

The second set was better and he had so many break point opportunities, but he refused to take them and when Tim was serving for the match at 5-4, then David decides to serve 3 double faults in his service game just because he is charitable.

Nalbandian will have to improve for sure and Henman now plays Federer in the semis, while Gaston and Nalbandian play tomorrow.

Don't get worried Jazz :) As we said yesterday - it's only an exhibition - and even if he loses every match it isn't really the end of the world and it's all good match practice. Last year David started really well in Australia and then missed half the season - but still managed to finish the season in the Top 10 - even though he missed Wimbledon and lost early in the US Open. So if he has a disastrous Australia (which in the circumstances he might well) - it's only one small part of the season - getting himself physically and emotionally fit and well is far more important even if it takes him til March to do it!! :) James Blake has only just started playing again after losing his Father last Summer - these things take time - let's just be patient and try and be as positive as we can but not expect too much. I would personally be surprised if he wins any matches at Kooyong - but I'm not going to get worried though -it's part of life :)

OK - sorry Gaston fans - you know I love him too - but I am really pleased. The first win in a new season is always hard - especially with all the problems that David has had this past few months. And - yes - we know it's only an Exhibition  - but VAMOS DAVID - and very good luck to Gaston in his next match :)

I found this quote from David about Kooyong in an article that Debstah put on GM - sorry I don't know the source but I thought it was quite good because David sounds positive.

______________________________________

Enjoying the tournament at Kooyong, Nalbandian spoke of his desire to warm up to the Australian Open in Melbourne with the best players in the world.

'I like to play three, four matches before in Australia, I think playing here at Kooyong is better than playing a tournament because you are in Melbourne, you are in Australia with the same surface, same balls, same weather, you don't have to take a plane to come back here,' he said.

Our guy is so sensible!!!!! Actually its the best preparation for any player to be in the same city, playing on the same surface and the best thing is the fact that its an exhibition and he gets to play against the best in the word as a warm up. :) :)

Just because I am here now.

I went and saw the first match between Gaudio and Nalbandian and for the 1st set it was quite a good match. David seemed to be more serious about it, but he needed to be after his first match against Henman.

Gaston started serving and had his footfaultitis again, but he started off well with 2 big backhand winners. The thing I noticed from the first 3 games was the clear improvement from yesterday, even though it was fucking hot already at 11am and of course I was out in the sun frying away, but managing to keep cool enough.

The first break for Nalle was for 2-3. It was funny Gaston hits a bad dropshot, Nalle hits a worse reply, but then he settles down and is moving well and being aggressive and showing he is better on this surface than Gaston. Gaston misses a gimmy to make it to duece.

The next service game had a very cool moment as Nalle gets back to duece with some good play, he hits a top drop volley that is backspinning towards the net, Gaston makes it and but David puts it away and then they end up on the same side of the net and shake hands.

Gaston is serving/volleying more than usual and that is usually a sign in itself ;D. He was volleying well and hitting some good winners, but I was impressed with Nalle's forehand and he was getting some very good angles and Gaston's volleying was very good in these stages, though he managed to blow easy chances at the wrong moments.

One very funny moment was a 1st serve from Gaston it was such a fault it missed the court and it went 6 rows back before bouncing, you can only laugh at such stuff like that, and then he lost serve.

Nalle is continuing on and playing very well and Gaston seemed a bit disinterested, he didn't tank at all, but a bit disinterested. He didn't hold a serve in the second set and Nalle was focused and wasn't going to let him off the hook.

It was a good and fun first set, but the 2nd one was a combination of Nalle's consistency and a bit of disinterest from Gaston, but it was good to see them play.
The right man won and the result was fair enough maybe the 1st set could have been 6-4 or 7-5 as it was fairly close, but I always felt David was in control.

Good Job for David! I always cheer for Gaston (sorry) but I was happy for David. Hopefully this will give him a boost for the AO and for the rest of the year. I hope its helped cheer him a bit too since he's had such a rough time of it lately. Vamos David!

And GWH thanks for your reports in the G.G. forum and this one too. You are such a good reporter and so many people were waiting to hear your thoughts in this match! Keep having fun on your trip. :wavey:

Thanks GWH - I was going to copy the report over from Gaston's Forum - but you beat me to it! Thanks a bunch for your brilliant reports - you just put me to shame more and more that I don't do them when I'm "on Tour"! Keep up the good work and don't forget to have lots of fun in Melbourne.

And Taysbest - don't be sorry for cheering for Gaston - he's your man - that's how it shoud be - but thanks for your kind words about David :)

Thank you sooo much for the report George!!!
I'm glad David was consistent and focused :)
I also noticed in the stats from yesterday that he had more winners with his forehand than with his backhand, maybe he's trying to improve it...

Rosie, I copy the interview you gave us here, it's easier to read this way :)
DAVID NALBANDIAN:
Q: David, a tough last year with injuries, how does the body feel in the early part of this
year?
A: I feel much better and at the end of last year we done many tests to see the reasons of
the injury so we found some interesting things to work and I think we had a good
December working hard. I had family problems in December so it was a little tough for
us to practice but I think we do a very good job.
Q: When you look back at last year, at the Australian Open you reached the quarter
finals and played Roger and had a pretty good chance, you pushed him a long way. Did
you feel at that time that you were set for a good year last year?
A: I think the beginning of the year for me was very good, I played very good here, I
played Australian very good. That match with Roger, we both played good tennis, I
think it was a great match and was very, very close. And then I play a Davis Cup in
Morocco, I also played very good and in the Davis Cup I twist my ankle and I start all
the injuries and then was very tough for me to come back. I play 14 tournaments in the
year so it's really, really tough to me but all the times I get in the court I play very good,
I do finals, semi finals and it was a surprise to me to be in the end of the year number
eight, number nine fighting for the Masters so with that very few tournaments it was
very good.
Q: Very encouraging result out there today as well to take into next week.
A: Yes. For me this kind of match is very important. I think we try to - I mean me,
Guston, everybody, everybody likes to play here. I feel much better than the end of last
year and I want to try and do my best for everybody here in Australia.
Q: You say you like to play here and everybody likes to play here, how is this different
from an ATP tournament, is it different atmosphere?
A: It's two different things. The best player here playing trying to win but also it's like
an exhibition so you try to play your best but also a little bit more relaxing than a
tournament and I think is better for me. I like to play three, four matches before in
Australia, I think playing here at Kooyong is better than playing a tournament because
you are in Melbourne, you are in Australia with the same surface, same balls, same
weather, you don't have to take a plane to come back here - if you play a tournament,
you play in the finals on Saturday and then you have to take a plane, you have to come
back, to arrive, to adapt a little bit to the tournament and I think for us, for the guys that
are playing here, arrive on Monday or Tuesday is much better than arrive on the
weekend.
Q: How did you find the surface today?
A: Is fast, slow?
Q: Yes.
A: No, I feel okay. I think when the balls are new maybe a little bit faster, the balls are
a little light, but then I think it's almost the same as last year. A little bit different, not
much.
Q: There has been some criticism from some of the Aussies about the courts being too
slow. Do you think that is perhaps an unnecessary criticism?
A: I don't know. I don't feel much different than last year. I don't know why they have
to change it. If some players would like to change, I hear that Hewitt talked with the
Tournament Director to try to make it faster but, I don't know, it's the Tournament
Director's decision, not the players' decision.
Q: Do you think that's fair enough for players in their own country to want the courts
designed to suit their games?
A: For Davis Cup is normal but not for a tournament. I would like to play in Argentina
Davis Cup on hard court but nobody wants to and I had to adapt to playing clay so is
not one player have the last word, the Tournament Director have the decision, they
make it whatever he wants and I think he try to do the best surface for everybody, not
just one or two.
Q: David, there's a lot of questions being asked about Roger, but I was wondering about
Roddick, how do you see his game; he is obviously one of the top players?
A: I didn't see him yet so I cannot tell you for this year.
Q: From last year. What is dangerous about playing Andy, what are the dangerous
things about his game?
A: Serve, for sure, and forehand, a very good forehand.
Q: Do players automatically go for his backhand because it is the slightly weaker side?
How do you play somebody like that when you know one side is much stronger than the
other?
A: You have to adapt your game and it's all about tactics. You have to do a good tactic
and that's it. You have to try to make it after that, of course.
Q: The other thing is when in the off-season now in December, or whatever short
off-season, when players make changes to their games maybe they are a bit stronger or
they are trying new shots, when they come here and you are playing in a warm-up
tournament, are you able to pick up those changes quickly, whether the guy is hitting
the ball harder or trying something different?
A: It's difficult. I mean, you can try everything practicing and then during the match is
different, you have more pressure and is more tougher to make different things and new
things so you have to try to improve him first, be sure whatever you want to do, and
then you try to do it in the matches.
Q: But when an opponent makes a change, can you quickly see he is trying something
different from last year?
A: Depends the change. There is a few small change and a big change so it depends.

Thanks George for your report!

From the live report of some aussies this morning, i had thought it was a mediocre match. Sounds a lot errors, long time set and dull rallies. But you never can say much if you didn't see a match by your own eyes.

good to see he play a quite good match with gaston, and warming up step by step. Many thanks for that. :hatoff:

They asked some silly questions about that, especially let he comment on Roddick's game and "dangerous" :o:rolleyes:
