10-20-2002, 07:07 AM
but why are they playing in different tournaments???? thats really weird considering its DC really really soon

10-20-2002, 07:15 PM
i dont really know..and i'm wondering why Seb and Mika arent playing double together this week since they both play in Stockolm.

10-21-2002, 08:15 AM
mika as in llodra? he's playing in stockholm and seb is playing in ST PETERSBURG. what ever happened to Dip?!

10-21-2002, 11:09 AM
yes Mika is Llodra!i dunno about Dip..u have to check some qualifying draws to find him!

10-21-2002, 12:04 PM
At the moment, he's playing some smaller tournaments on clay, his favourite surface.

:wavey: sure you are! ;) :D

Do you know how many wildcards are available? 3?

I think Mathieu and Clément will get one, who else, Fabrice?

Although maybe Arnaud will get direct entry if someone else withdraws (Malisse?? Novak??) as he is the next one in.

10-21-2002, 07:59 PM
is Escude in?if so,i think WC will go to mathieu, santoro and clement.if clement enters, then maybe Gasquet?! or Boutter?

10-22-2002, 07:19 AM
it'll be really interesting to see who the wildcards go to..
i reckon they'd go to escude, mathieu and arnaud/santoro?

10-22-2002, 05:25 PM
They better give a wildcard to my Paul-Henri!

If Arnaud gets in, they should give one to Llodra :hearts:

10-24-2002, 05:24 PM
Clement is in main draw directly cos Enqvist withdrew.

10-25-2002, 08:55 PM
F. Mantilla vs N. Escude
A. Clement vs R. Schuettler
S. Grosjean vs bye
Y. El Aynaoui vs P-H. Mathieu
F. Santoro vs T. Robredo

Seb plays second round the winner of Paulo vs Younes!
the other musketeers are in quali draw! :)

ohhhhhhh i'm so happy seb won!!!! i can't get over it :D

10-28-2002, 08:01 PM
Clement beat Schuettler 7-5 6-4! :D :D :D
Fab/Nico won double 6-0 6-1  :D and they said Guy asked them to play together!i hope they play well this week cos it they could be a better pair for DC instead of Fab/Mika.
Dupuis (isnt he a musketeer too?lol) leads Lapentti 7-5 ;)
Mathieu needs 2/3 weeks of rest, after this they'll decide if he will be able to play DC or not.

 to Esther!

10-28-2002, 08:26 PM
Arnaud! :)

10-29-2002, 04:35 AM
awww doesnt arnaud look gorgeous...

hehe vale  to you too

10-29-2002, 04:36 AM
oh btw --santoro and escude?? another weird combination. forget has SO much control over them!

10-29-2002, 04:44 AM
i cannot believe arnaud is playing schalken again!!!
they've played each other 3 times already and that doesnt seem that much but schalken always seems to be THERE or in other tournaments if arnaud loses early he would have played him 2nd or 3rd round or something!
has anyone else noticed this or am i just being crazy...??

10-29-2002, 02:28 PM
i think Schalken has withdrawn so Arnaud passed second round without playing :D

By the way, congrats to Nico for his great win!! :)
Too bad for Fab! :(

abstracts from Escude/Santoro interview after double match.

Q. How did it happen that you played this tournament together, and why didn't you ever play this kind of tournament before although you knew each other well?

FABRICE SANTORO: Just because the opportunity didn't come up. I played with Arnaud, after I played with Michael, tournament after tournament; things went on. Nico was winning matches on his side, I was winning my matches. We had different paths. Now we're going to play the finals (laughing).

No, anyway, what I mean is that Guy Forget asked us to try something different, and the only possibility that had not been tried since the beginning of the season was Michael and Arnaud and Nico and myself. This is what we're trying to do here, to have a third element for the selection of Davis Cup.

Q. What mark would you give to your partner for those three matches?
FABRICE SANTORO: Difficult to say...I think our strength, after three doubles only, we are not very well ranked for the time being. But I feel good playing with him because we play serve and volley naturally. We play well at the net. When we are at the net, we are really above the other team. We are dominating. If we want to play long, we play long. If we want to play a dropshot, we play a dropshot. But we are very much at ease at the net. Today, Nico had very good returns and myself, on the right‑hand side, I was okay. So if I can improve my returns there, it will be a plus.

So was it difficult to go on the right‑hand side? Guy forced you? What happened? Nico, are you incapable of playing on the right‑hand side?

NICOLAS ESCUDE: Well, before I used to adapt to my colleague, but it's true that on the left‑hand side I feel a lot more at ease, and I thought it was better. I asked Guy to play on the left‑hand side.

Q. How did you present your argument?

NICOLAS ESCUDE: I just said, "I want to play on the left‑hand side." That's all (smiling)

Q: Fabrice, what do you prefer, which partner do you prefer for Davis Cup? Secondly, how did you talk with Michael about it? Did this decision come naturally?

FABRICE SANTORO: Well, we decided to try all the combinations and we decided there were absolutely no problems and we decided to try this new combination. Guy decided about the combinations for this tournament. There are really absolutely no problems with Michael. In fact, Michael wanted to play on the left‑hand side for a long time. Now he has the opportunity.
Now, as far as my partners are concerned, Escude or Michael for me, what I try to do is my best, whoever is with me. I feel at ease with both of them. I try to give my best, and to play as many matches as possible.Anyway, I'm not the decision‑maker.

10-29-2002, 02:48 PM
Arnaud interview after his win against Schuettler:

Q. What happened today? Is it the end of the season? It was a bit difficult today.

ARNAUD CLEMENT: Yes, it's true that it was not a beautiful match. I always want to play well, of course; but in the end of the season, what can happen is that you feel tired and you lack eagerness. But today it was not the case at all.

Q. But the problem...

ARNAUD CLEMENT: Well, I felt energetic. I was playing fast, but I already played better. There are many parts of the game where I was better before, like serving, for example.
But it was not a catastrophe today. He had a better season than I had this year, and I was able to win without playing a beautiful match.

Q. What do you need to turn things around in your favor in that kind of match?

ARNAUD CLEMENT: Well, at certain times it was very tight, and at those moments he always played the same; whereas at certain moments I didn't want to give away any point. This is how I finished the first set and the second one also. When I got broken, I was furious and I came back. He didn't react. He was always at the same level of energy. He didn't change.

Q. In this tournament you never had great success. Did you change your attitude towards this tournament?

ARNAUD CLEMENT: The first year I was happy because I had a wildcard and I went past the first round. It was a great memory. I think it was in '97 I won against Rosset. But last year, the end of the season was very bad for me. The year before, it's true I never went far in this draw. It's a very strong tournament. There is no easy round. Some matches are more, let's say, attainable than others, but otherwise it's always difficult.
It's not a matter of fitness or tennis which would prevent me to go to the next round. The only thing that would stop me is to play against a better player than I am. I feel really ready to play a few matches anyway.

Q. You know Schalken very well.

ARNAUD CLEMENT: Schalken, I think it's 5‑2 or 4‑2 head‑to‑head in his favor. We played three times this year against the other already. Generally we have nice matches, quite tight. There are many rallies, a lot of rhythm. He's difficult to beat, but it's my kind of game anyway. He's a very complete player; he's good in every part of the game. His backhand is very good because he makes no mistakes with his backhand. I don't remember his ranking ‑ I think he's Top 20 or something. I think the second part of the season was excellent for him.

Q. He's not spectacular as a player. He doesn't bend his knees when he serves, for example.
ARNAUD CLEMENT: It's true. He is very tall and he seems slow, but even on low and fast shots he's able to hit them back. He's always on time, close to the ball. He's never late.

Q. Of course the injury of Paul‑Henri is bad news. Are you thinking about the Davis Cup, or don't you want to think about it like everybody else?

ARNAUD CLEMENT: I'm certainly not thinking about the Davis Cup right now. Of course if I want to think about it, nobody's going to prevent me from doing so. But today I'm in front of the Tennis Masters Series of Paris and I am very sad for him, for Paul‑Henri, because his end of the season is gone now.But for the time being, I have Bercy in front of my eyes. It's a big tournament. It's a Masters Series. When you are playing in a Masters Series, you don't start thinking about something which is going to start only in seven weeks-I really feel bad for my friend. It's something difficult for him anyway.

Q. Playing doubles with Michael, how do you compare him with Nicolas? It's very important for him. He's going to play an important match with you.
ARNAUD CLEMENT: The doubles is very important for me, too. The last doubles, when I played, I was not very good. There were four of us, and we thought we would create two teams and we didn't know who would play with whom. We didn't know what Guy wanted. So now he decided, and I'm very pleased to play with Michael. It's clear that this tournament is the last tournament of the year, so it's important for everybody to show your best, to show yourself at your best. But of course in three weeks from now, the fitness of each player will be different than right now. There will be time for practicing and everything.
I'm sure you're thinking more about the Davis Cup than we are.

LOL@this last quote! :p

11-01-2002, 05:58 PM
Part of Nico's interview yesterday:
Q. Did you see Clement and Llodra when you came here?
NICOLAS ESCUDE: Normally I just see them when I step into the court. I didn't even know I was going to play against them. It's going to be funny, I think. We should remain serious, though, and not start laughing too much on the court.

they are playing now :) Nico/Fab leads 4-3

11-01-2002, 06:07 PM
As for Seb's interview yesterday:
Q. May I say a word, I think everybody will agree with me. We would like to congratulate you for coming so fast in the press conference after a loss. It's very professional and I congratulate you.

u mean nico and fab right

11-02-2002, 02:49 AM
marilyn- oh ok thats for the link. ur right..he's such an angel!
Heres the whole interview--i'm glad he's happy and he mentioned his family again! shows how much he's thinking of them--

Q. We had the feeling that you hurt your back in the tiebreaker at 5‑2. There was a big rally. You seemed stiff.

SEBASTIEN GROSJEAN: I think it's more a matter of tiredness. The match was very intense, very physical, and in the end of the match I had a letdown physically.

But it's not an injury in my back, no. It's, rather, tiredness.

Q. Did you feel that he was fighting for his place in the Masters?

SEBASTIEN GROSJEAN: Yes, I felt it from the beginning. He was a bit tense in the beginning of the match, but he really fought well until the end.

The end of the tiebreaker was very good on his part, and the third set, of course. I think it was a complete match.

Q. At the end of the second set you played two beautiful games to break him and have your three matchpoints.

SEBASTIEN GROSJEAN: Yes, I made very good points, especially at 30‑all. After, I followed my path and he missed a passing shot, I think.

But after that I missed about three points because of one or two centimeters and he kept fighting. Maybe he was more eager than I was, in fact, on the court.

Q. At the end of the second set, we felt you were not hitting hard enough your forehand?

SEBASTIEN GROSJEAN: In fact, I missed the chip. In fact, I wanted to make him play. It's very difficult to counterattack on his first serve because he has a very good serve. So it's better to make him play rather than try to play a winner.

Q. Otherwise, it's not the first time a player has a matchpoint and loses the match. But when you come back to the locker rooms, do you think this kind of thing happens, or what do you think?

SEBASTIEN GROSJEAN: Well, I won many matches saving matchpoints, and other matches I lost. I think this is tennis. I played against Moya in Key Biscayne. It was about the same case, but I won that time. So this kind of thing happens.

In a period of five or six years ahead, it's going to happen again. I think this is part of sports.

Q. Of course stepping back, in spite of the disappointment, given the results you had these past weeks and the good season in spite of the injuries, are you happy now that you can rest?

SEBASTIEN GROSJEAN: Yes, of course I'm happy. It's going to do me a lot of good to rest for two weeks, to find my roots and to stop holding the racquet.

I had difficulties during this season, and the end of the season was very busy.

So of course it's going to be very pleasing to have a good break.

Q. Compared with last year, you came here, you were full of energy. This year, your tank was full at what level, your tank of gas?

SEBASTIEN GROSJEAN: Well, I was as confident as last year at the same moment about my tennis. But physically, I was better last year. I was very fit, and I was trusting my body. Whereas here, I was a big weakened. I was a bit tired after the past three weeks ‑ very difficult ones.

So maybe physically I was a bit lower than my usual level.

Q. And you still believe you can win in spite of that?

SEBASTIEN GROSJEAN: Yes. When you play a tournament, you are motivated. Every player playing in this kind of tournament, like Bercy, wants to do well. Just for a matter of fitness, it's a pity that I lost.

Q. Do you believe this type of loss can have mental consequences for the future?

SEBASTIEN GROSJEAN: It happened to me often to have matchpoints and lose the match. Just after, I bounced back very well.

So this time it was just a physical matter. So I think now I will feel good with my family, resting, and I think it will be okay.

Q. Michael Stich had nine matchpoints in the final of the Davis Cup in Russia in Moscow, so this is just to make you feel good. Is it psychological?

SEBASTIEN GROSJEAN: And after that, he won Wimbledon. This is sport, it's the game.

Q. May I say a word, I think everybody will agree with me. We would like to congratulate you for coming so fast in the press conference after a loss. It's very professional and I congratulate you.

11-02-2002, 02:55 AM

Marylin,u saw Guy at Nico vs Tim match?when he wore black jacket and black shirt  and he was sitting close to Tulasne?

11-02-2002, 09:28 AM
Don't be too sad for Seb, at least that helped Carlos qualifying for the Masters and Nico, yes he fought well.

Each time I have seen Guy on TV this week, his wife was around. :D

Nice to see both Guga and Cédric doing well, although it will probably be pointless for Pioline regarding the Davis CUp since Escudé looks good on Fabrice's side.
