Juan Carlos in Madrid

The tournament starts tomorrow, so it's about time we got this thread going. :)

VAMOS JAUNQUI!!!

:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

But I have to admit I don't like the draw one bit. I talked about the possible clash with Schüttler in our thread, but I forgot to mention that Younes :fiery: is in his quarter. He might not make it that far though. :D :p

Come on, Juanqui! Let the home audience carry you through to the final! ;) Not that you need their help or anything.

Layla

LOL, what am I saying. :o Of course Younes will be taken out. If not sooner by Agassi. Not that meeting Agassi in the QF is a much more inviting prospect. :( This isn't RG anymore. ;) But that one victory will give him so much confidence. :)

VAMOSSSSSS JUAN CARLOS!

TennisHack

Juanqui will have no problems in his quarter if he can get past his second round match. Agassi hasn't played since the Open, but he's sure to take out Younes :fiery::fiery: anyway. I think he has a really good chance here!

VAMOS, DAHLING!!

Vera

Don't think I need to worry about the draw, since there's no easy draw anymore. And that 2nd round jinx, just seems it doesn't matter who's on the other side. I just hope that Juanqui will play his best, and I believe his best is enough to beat most of the players in the tourney. So best of luck to Juanqui. And pls get deep into the tourney for us, so we can watch you on TV:D

Don't like that he's in Agassi's section. But come to think about it, I may just cheer hard for Andre to get thru, to meet Juanqui. That will be a guarantee show match on TV... Andre lost his first match last year in Stuggart. So I don't know if he can last this time, playing Pavel.

Anyway, VAMOS JUANQUI, we'll cheer very hard for you. :bounce:

You're right Vera... unlike in the WTA, in the ATP no opponent is a walkover.

But I have faith in Juan Carlos! :D VAMOS!

TennisHack

The second round opponent is known: Jarkko Nieminen :o

I love Jarkko, as you can all attest, but he's going to have to be really on to be able to take out Juan Carlos (or Juanqui will have to suffer like he did last week against you-know-who). And he had a tough time dispatching of Rainer Schuettler today, though he managed to come back in the tiebreak after trailing 5-3

Jarkko doesn't give up, and I think this match will be a great one. I'm angry that I don't get to see it :fiery:

And a little news, to boot:

Roddick and Ferrero Enjoy Vintage Mercedes-Benz Tour

Spain's tennis sensation Juan Carlos Ferrero and American Andy Roddick took part in an early morning tour of Madrid Monday in a 1954 Mercedes-Benz Adenauer roadster, as part of a promotion to launch the inaugural Tennis Masters Madrid.

Cruising with the cabriolet top down, the two popular stars traveled in style to the famous Palacio de Oriente, a royal palace, via the Gran Vía. Also joining Roddick and Ferrero on the Mercedes-Benz tour was Manolo Santana, the tournament director. Roddick and Ferrero are just two of the big names in the main singles draw at this year's Madrid event, which begins with first-round action Monday.

i think Jarkko Nieminen will be tired out from his LONG 7-6 in the 3rd set match today and Juanqui should win it. :)

Kafel is not the threat he once was, I think he's shown that mighty well over the past few weeks. :( He's gunning for Davis Cup.

Leo, stop trying to provoke me ;) I want to see this match because it's one of the last chances I'll have to see Jarkko all year. Is that so much to ask?!?!?!?

We canadians are never lucky. I speaked too fast and set myself up for a big disappointment. If I know we just merely getting ESPN again, I wouldn't have hope that JC will be on. :fiery: :fiery:

Nothing against Guga but a taped match of Moya against Gonzo would have preferred if no JC. But what was I thinking, ESPN stands for ESPana No!

Leo7
10-15-2002, 10:00 PM
lol @ Vera. so true. we never get to see the Spaniards on ESPN, unless they get to the later rounds of big tourneys or if they play Americans. i did at least see Juan Carlos vs. Moya in Monte Carlo and Cincinnati this year, but neither were thrilling matches. i would have loved to have seen their 7-6 in the 3rd set marathon in Hong Kong. but of course we don't get coverage of that in the states.

Oooh, thanks for the pictures, Nacho! :)

Can you direct me to this site, if they have more Jarkko pictures? They had pictures of him last year when he won the Cordoba challenger.

Thanks!!

Juan Carlos's hair is a very nice shade now :) AND, LOL, brighter than Jarkko's!:eek:

Vera
10-16-2002, 01:09 AM
Well, I guess I don't have to tell you who's hair's lighter now, TH! I've said this before, he changes his hair every tourney! :D I love the messy look, seems that he just jumped out from the shower . And he looks so keen in the press conference, must feel good about winning this tough match. Hands on table, like a good school boy...

:) Hi Vera!

What you said re: TV coverage is So true! I too was disappointed w what we got; Moya vs. Gonzalez was s/to be a very hot match -- at least it w/have been more interesting! Maybe if it wasn't such a long match, w/could have seen Juanqui? What do you think?

And today?? Hope to see some Federer/Rios but Rios is looking good(!?) in this tourney so far... but I'm behind Rogi all the way!

Juanqui better do better next round. Silly little chavalito!

VAMOS, Spanish guys!

Hi every1

I saw Juanqui's match OMG! he was so lucky to win that:eek: He played so badly for most of the match. His serve was all over the place he couldn't keep his shots in court it was torture to watch. I'm pleased he won but he has to be playing 10 times better if he's going to get any further. His hair is such any awful colour now and he looked so tired and stressed.

Anyway VAMOS JUANQUI IN ROUND 3!!!!!! he surely can't play any worse:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Hi RogiFan :wavey: how's your holiday?

I don't quite understand ESPN, they have the chance to show live sports but they go with taped? I think you can get away with it few years back when there's no internet. But now:mad: I knew the score before they showed Guga's match, so the match just seems extremely boring, granted though, it wasn't that exciting. Today, I have to resist the scoreboard before the coverage started. I guess they think casual fans aren't going to check the scoreboard, and tennis drunkies are going to watch it anyhow. Pffffff, brilliant strategy.

Well, I did guess it right today, that they will show Rogi and Rio, lucky you ;). These 2 days coverage is for Latin American so I thought Rio would be on the menu. Disappointed though, of Rio's performance, he sucked in the match. Well, important thing is Rogi wins and he have a great chance in his side of the draw. I'm pretty convince that he will be in Shanghai, I like that. BTW, his white outfit makes him look like an angel, don't you think?  :D

So, I'm pretty sure we won't be getting JC and Alex tomorrow. 2 spanish players? NO WAY! Moya's match will be fine, and I'll be pissed if they showed Nalbandian and Santoro. ESPN makes me want to move to Europe

i just finished watching my tape of the Alex Corretja match today. so glad ESPN showed it (almost the entire thing minus one game)! :D

Alex was playing very aggressively in the first set, taking full control of the match. he had more winners and unforced errors than Juanqui. Ferrero wasn't serving well at all, struggling to hold on almost every service game. his serve percentage was barely above 40%! Ferrero also missed some opportunities in this set, like the two break points he held at 3-5 when Alex was serving for it.

but Juanqui picked up his game in the 2nd, coming out on fire. right away he starting blasting winners, playing much more aggresively and not allowing Corretja to take control. while Ferrero's game was going up, Corretja's was going way down. he started hitting way too many unforced errors, at times going for too much.

in the 3rd setg it looked like Corretja was about to get the momentum back when he had 15-30 on Ferrero's serve at 1-1, but Juanqui blasted two big first serves to get out of trouble. :D at the end the crowd tried to get behind Alex but it was too late. he double faulted on break point at 1-4 to give Juanqui a 2nd break of serve and at that point it was all over. but that didn't mean Alex would stop fighting. on match point #1, he came up with a gorgeous forehand passing shot on the run for a winner! :) but two unforced errors in a row and Juanqui was on to the Quarters...

if he wins tomorrow against Agassi (who must be exhausted from his 3 long sets he played today aginst Lopez) then he moves up to #3 in the Race! :D
