Agassi Fit and Ready for Assault on Australian Open

Thu Jan 6, 1:17 AM ET Sports - Reuters

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Former Australian Open (news - web sites) champion Andre Agassi (news) says he is as hungry as ever to claim the tournament for the fifth time later this month. "The second the hunger goes it's impossible (to compete)," a fit-looking Agassi told the crowd at the Australian women's hard-court championship at the Gold Coast Thursday.

The American was talking after a mini exhibition with Australia's former Davis Cup player Scott Draper (news) during a break between matches.

"I'm 34 years old, going on 35 (on April 29) this year, and unless I'm working harder and am as eager as ever there's no chance.

"But I'm here with the intention of bringing my best and winning and that's what I'm shooting for."

Agassi will join world number one and defending Australian Open champion Roger Federer (news) in the eight-man field for the round-robin Kooyong Classic event in Melbourne from January 12-15.

The Australian Open starts in Melbourne on January 17.

The shaven-headed Agassi has won the U.S. Open (news - web sites) in 1994 and 1999, Wimbledon (news - web sites) in 1992 and the French Open (news - web sites) in 1999, plus four Australian Open titles in 1995, 2000, 2001 and 2003.

Agassi Appears at Australia Tennis Event
Thu Jan 6, 8:52 AM ET

GOLD COAST, Australia - Andre Agassi made a surprise appearance at the Australian women's hardcourt championships Thursday, playing an unscheduled exhibition match after top-seeded Nadia Petrova withdrew before her quarterfinal.

Agassi, who is training for this month's Australian Open (news - web sites), played Australian journeyman Scott Draper in an hour-long match to fill a void in the tournament schedule.

Russia's Petrova was forced out of her quarterfinal against Silvia Farina Elia of Italy because of an unspecified injury.

The 34-year-old Agassi told the crowd he was capable of winning a fifth Australian Open title.

"I'm here with the intention of bringing my best and winning it, and that's what I'm shooting for," he said.

Draper, who recently qualified to play on Australia's professional golf tour, said he would be switching between golf and tennis this year, but hoped eventually to concentrate on golf.

Elia will face Australian Samantha Stosur in the semifinals. Stosur upset eighth-seeded Magadalena Maleeva of Bulgaria 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 Thursday.

Second-seeded Patty Schnyder of Switzerland also advanced to the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Bulgaria's Sesil Karatantcheva. Schnyder will play French teenager Tatiana Golovin, who beat Italy's Flavia Pennetta 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-4.

Agassi fear for Open
Andre Agassi has lined up a practice match against Tim Henman on Saturday to establish whether he is fit enough to play in the Australian Open.
Agassi had to withdraw from his Kooyong Classic semi-final match against Andy Roddick on Thursday with a hip injury.

British number one Henman's defeat by Roger Federer in the other semi-final has left him free to face the American.

Agassi, who has won the Australian Open four times, has been drawn to face a qualifier in the first round next week.

2 hours, 55 minutes ago Sports - AFP

MELBOURNE, Australia (AFP) - Andre Agassi will make a last attempt to play in next week's Australian Open (news - web sites) by testing his injured hip in a one-off training match against Britain's Tim Henman Saturday.

The 34-year-old legend was forced to withdraw from the Kooyong Classic here when trailing 6-5 Thursday, handing opponent Andy Roddick a place in the final against Swiss world number one Roger Federer.

Agassi, who has a hip flexor problem, told his coach Darren Cahill to see if a practise match would be possible. Officials quickly lined up world number seven Henman, defeated by Federer earlier Friday.

Agassi, the former world number one, has won four Australian Open titles and is seeded eighth.

What's the result of this match? Is Agassi all set to Play in the AO?
If its hot in Melbourne , then Agassi's chances brighten because he likes the heat.
I hope he gets more Day matches ...
