Why Hewitt has 690 and not 697?

What surprises me most of all is that Novak is knocking at the door of Masters Cup.

TheBoiledEgg

Mathematically, who still had a chance at #1 and who still had a chance at the maters cup?

TheBoiledEgg
10-10-2002, 11:08 AM
it only down to Safin but realistically only between Andre and Lleyton

Marat would have to win both Masters and Masters Cup (going unbeaten and even then he won't be sure)

vaiva
10-10-2002, 01:35 PM
And even if Marat wins both Masters + the Cup, Hewitt will have to lose very early everywhere which is very unlikely

For me, the saddest thing is that the No.1 position will be contested between Agassi and Hewitt. I'd rather have Hewitt to take it 2 years in a row because he is the better between these two bad choices. But please not Agassi it will be a nightmare for me :(

Lleyton should get the No.1 spot, since he has been the most consistent of the Grand Slam winners this year.
Besides getting to the U.S. Open final, and also winning a couple tournaments, I'm not sure what Andre has done to get to No. 2 (I haven't been paying much attention to men's tennis lately).

It's almost time to bring out those little sheets where we have written down at the beginning of the year our prediction on who will make the Master's Cup!

Tommy:( . You're on my list! Please go pick up more points!
And Rogi.. do the same please!

Hey guys, how's your list faring? I wonder who on this board would get 8 out of 8. The race to shanghai is getting interesting!

It seems Paris will be Tommy Haas' last chance for the Master's Cup...provided Henman does not do well there, and Moya knocks out the ever-looming Novak. And someone must keep Roddick and Novak at bay in Paris also. It will be so disheartening if Tommy makes number 8 again only to be kept out by a slumping lucky one Slam wonder who barely manages to win a set let alone a match in the Masters.

Is it me, or has anyone else think that Hewitt has gotten quite a bit of viral infections this year, which has resulted in him pulling out of tourneys?

I will get the masters cup in Canada, and TSN only seem to carry the ESPN coverage (doesn't ESPN own TSN? They must! Sames coverage, same name of the highlights program, same logos etc etc.). Thus, if I'm going ot get ESPN coverage, I would assume that you also will ;)

Jiri has earned his place in the race, so I won't begrudge him a position if he makes it. Carlos has got to get it together, it would be a shame for him to miss the Cup after taking 4 titles this year. :( Good luck to him in Paris! :)

Juan Carlos apparently did a nice little choking job today, too, and he could be passed by Rogi.

Thanks to a little help from Roger, Carlos, and Henman - if Ferrero can just keep his head on and win a couple more matches, he looks to qualify as well.

Of course he could not win again all season and be passed, but I don't see it happened somehow.

As for Novak, cut the guy some slack. He's winning me points in some game by being so freaking consistent ;)

The year's almost over, can we forget about Roland Garros, please? :( Let's remember he was in a major slump (injuries) earlier this year and managed to come to MC with a losing record and won the whole thing. :)

There's still a possibility that he can't make Shanghai, but he knows what he needs to do in the next 2 weeks and I'm sure he's try very hard to achieve that.

The Champions Race Heats Up

With the leaders of the ATP Champions Race continuing to wage a fierce battle, there are few certainties in the fight for berths to Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai. What is certain, however, is that a minimum of three places - and possibly all six remaining places - will be decided in the last week of the regular season at the BNP Paribas Masters next week.

Third-place Marat Safin could qualify this week if he reaches the St. Petersburg final. Fourth-place Juan Carlos Ferrero could qualify if he wins the Basel title. Roland Garros champion Albert Costa, currently 63 points clear of Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson, could seal a berth if he wins the Basel title and Johansson falls in the first round in Stockholm. Just 85 points separate third-place Safin and 11th-place Andy Roddick. Meanwhile, Andre Agassi moved within striking distance of Lleyton Hewitt in the race for the year-end No. 1.
The Tennis Masters Cup, the year-end men's tennis finale, is co-owned by the ATP, ITF and Grand Slams. It will be held at the Shanghai New Expo Centre from November 12-17.

Shanghai Spotlight

1st - Lleyton Hewitt: TThe defending champion has already qualified. A viral infection forced his withdrawal from Madrid but he is back on court in Stockholm this week. In a two-way fight with Agassi for the year-end No.1.

2nd - Andre Agassi: Agassi has qualified for the season-ending finale for the 14th time. Moved to within 43 points of Hewitt and is looking to become the oldest year-end No.1 in ATP history. Top seed in St. Petersburg this week

3rd - Marat Safin: Safin has refused to relinquish his hold on third place in recent weeks but has been unable to tie down one of the six remaining berths. Second seed in St. Petersburg this week and could clinch a berth if he reaches the final.

4th - Juan Carlos Ferrero: Ferrero strengthened his push to qualify for the second consecutive year by reaching the Madrid quarterfinals and will qualify if he wins Basel this week.

5th - Jiri Novak: The Czech surged from 11th to fifth by reaching the Tennis Masters Madrid final last week. But the groin injury he sustained in the semifinals - which forced his withdrawal from the final - keeps him out of St. Petersburg.

6th - Roger Federer: The Swiss has improved four spots in the past two weeks. But he is just two points clear of Henman and Moya, so he must perform well on home soil in Basel this week and Paris next week to qualify.

7th- Tim Henman: The proud father of new daughter Rose Elizabeth is top seed in Basel this week and could meet Federer in semis. Holds the crucial seventh position in the Race, but is level on points with eighth-place Carlos Moya.

8th - Carlos Moya: Moya has fewer points than Henman at the Grand Slams and Tennis Masters Series tournaments, so, under rules to break ties (both players have 421 points), he is eighth.

9th - Albert Costa: Costa must either break back into the top seven or stay ahead of Johansson and claim the Shanghai berth reserved for a Grand Slam champion outside the top seven. Withdrew from Madrid last week with a back injury but is entered this week in Basel. Possible to clinch a berth by winning the Basel title.

10th - Tommy Haas: Haas, who served as alternate in Sydney last year after coming within one match of qualifying, is now 32 points away from seventh place after a blistered hand forced his retirement in Madrid last week. Has withdrawn from Basel.

11th - Andy Roddick: Looking to qualify for his first Tennis Masters Cup, Roddick is 37 points away from seventh place. Can pick up a maximum of 35 points by winning Basel this week, but has a tough draw.

……………………………………………………..

12th - Pete Sampras: The US Open champion has withdrawn from all tournaments he had entered for the remainder of the regular season, so his chances of qualifying look slim.

13th - Thomas Johansson: If Johansson wins Stockholm and Costa falls in the first round in Basel, the Swede could move to within 28 points of his fellow Grand Slam champion.

One To Watch

14th - Guillermo Canas: Canas is 91 points behind Henman in seventh place, so his chances of qualifying look slim. But mathematically he remains a chance. Playing Stockholm this week.

See someone found that article on the TMS page giving details.
Agassi has a bit to do, but he just has to do better than Hewitt next week.
Haas, novak & Moya are all resting due to slight injures this week, we'll see how healthy they are next week.
Want both Moya & Henman to go through - sounds a difficult task.
At least Hewiit & Andre won't be in the same group in Shanghai remember its 1 & 2, 3 & 4 etc in different groups - a draw will decide who's in which.
V. much doubt Johansson has a hope in h*** of overtaking Costa in Paris, so Costa is almost certainly through as the WC - he's not likely to win a match in Paris either.

Escude better win today or Henman overtakes both Roger and Carlos

TheBoiledEgg
10-24-2002, 04:49 PM
Carlos is now very nearly out of Shanghai with Henman
moving to 428 pts
I can't see him losing his next match so thats him on 438
which means Moyawill need to make QF in Paris  which could be possible but very unlikely unless he gets someone useless in rd2 and rd 3

Roger can only increase his pts total if he makes the semifinal (+2) which is still only an opening loss in Paris away from missing out.

Roger can only make pts in Basel if he makes semis (+2)
if he makes final then (+12)
the title will give him (+27) which takes him to 450

Moya has to make QF in Paris or better to overtake Henman if Tim makes semis in Basel
still Haas might win Paris ;)
