Lycka till!!

lycka till! ("jag hoppas att du lyckas!")---good luck! ("I hope you succeed!")

This is from my favorite English Swedish Dictionary on line.

I think the "y" is pronounced sort of like "ue" in German.

Here's a place that you can hear the Swedish sounds. http://web.hhs.se/isa/swedish/chap9.htm

Adelaide, January 5 - Next Generation Hardcourts second seed Joachim Johansson sailed close to the exit door at Memorial Drive, Adelaide, tonight before pulling out a 6-7(4) 6-3 7-6(2) victory over Xavier Malisse.

Malisse matched the big hitting Swede from the baseline throughout the two hour, 28 minute encounter and had the crowd's support as he recovered a 1-4 deficit in the first set and a a 2-4 gap in the second with courageous shot-making.

"I was struggling a little bit, especially in the first set," said a relieved Johansson.

"That was my first match for a while. He didn't give me too many free points.

"I felt like I was on top in the second set but it could have gone either way today.

"In the tiebreak, I felt I felt I had to go for it."

Johansson's opponent in the quarterfinals is Davis Cup teammate Thomas Enqvist, who earlier upset No.7 Florian Mayer of Germany 6-3 6-3. While they have practised together many times, they have never met in competition on the ATP Tour.

Johansson powers through
January 7, 2005

RAMPAGING Joachim Johansson continued his scintillating start to the new year at the Next Generation Hardcourts today, moving into the semi-finals with a three-set win over Thomas Enqvist.

Johansson took care of his fellow Swede 6-3 4-6 6-1 and will now face Belgian Olivier Rochus, a three-set upset victor over third seed Nicolas Kiefer of Germany, for a place in the final.

The opening two sets of the all-Swede match were closely contested but Johansson burst out of the blocks at the beginning of the third to take a 4-1 lead.

He broke Enqvist in the next game before his blistering serve finished the match, Johansson sealing his ticket to the semis with an ace.

"I felt like I was striking the ball much better," Johansson said.

"I felt like I had a lot of break chances, I didn't take care of them all, but I broke him four times and he only broke me once.

"I felt that was the key to get up in the set early."

Rochus lost the first set against Kiefer in a tiebreaker but dug deep to win a colossal battle 6-7 7-6 7-5.

The match ended in controversy.

A bad line call went against Kiefer late in the third set, prompting the German to exchange angry words with the umpire and linesman.

Moments later, he lost the match and left court in a rage.

Afterwards, Rochus conceded his opponent had been on the wrong end of a poor call.

"I think it was clearly out," Rochus said.

JOHANSSON :( AGAINST ENQVIST) “I felt like I had a lot of break chances but I didn't take care of them all. I broke him four times and he only broke me once, so I felt that it was a key to get up in the sets very early. I felt like I was returning well, especially in the first set. I'm very satisfied with the way I played, especially in the first and third sets.”

(ON SEMI FINAL) “I played Rochus in Luxembourg last year and it was a great match that I won 76 75. He is a really tough opponent and I think he showed that against Keifer and he will be tough to beat.”

Johansson powers through to final

Top Swede Joachim Johansson moved through to his second ATP final today, overwhelmingly Belgium’s Olivier Rochus 6-1 7-6 (5) at the Next Generation Hardcourts in Adelaide.

The towering second seeded Johansson, who didn’t qualify for this event 12 months ago, is favoured to win the season opener at Memorial Drive after top seed Lleyton Hewitt was defeated by Taylor Dent last night 7-6(4) 6-3.

The key to Dent’s victory was his massive serve, as was the case today when Johansson beat the hide of the ball against the diminutive Rochus who, at 165 cm, is 30 cm smaller than Johansson.

Johansson completely dominated the first, 24 minute set, but hit a raft of unforced errors in the second set as Rochus broke him in the third game.

Johansson responded by breaking back immediately and the set continued on serve with Rochus’ confidence mounting by the game.

Rochus held the upperhand in the tiebreak, at one point leading 5-2 but Johansson’s serve – he hit 16 aces for the match – got him out of trouble.

A controversial line call set the score at 5-5 after which Rochus dumped a forehand into the net. His racquet barely contacted the next (match) point and he sent up a floater, which Johansson put away.

Johansson plays the winner of the second semifinal between fifth seeded Dent of the USA and fourth seeded Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina.

A semifinalist at the US Open last year, Johansson won his first ATP title at Memphis earlier in the year and was a quarterfinalist at seven other events. :worship:

from atp:

WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID

Dent : (On Sunday's final) “He'll be serving bombs. I know he hit 16 aces in the semifinal today, which is pretty impressive, so I will just be trying to get my racket on the ball and get into a lot of points and make him play. On my serve I will be trying to hit my spots and hopefully I can be a little more solid at the net. It should be short and sweet points though.”

Johansson : “I got off to a good start and a kept it going until the beginning of the second set and then I lost my concentration a little bit. But I'm very happy with the way I played the first set. I didn't go for my shots as much in the second set and I lost my movement a little bit in the second set. But I started to move better when I was 4-2 down in the tiebreak and I started to move better.”

“It means a lot to make the final here because this tournament and Stockholm feel like home for me.”

(On the final) “I've never played him before although we have practiced a fair bit. I know he has a huge serve and he is playing so well and he doesn't play like a lot of the other guys so hopefully I can figure out something.”

Rochus : “At the beginning it was really tough, he was playing so good. At the end of the match I think I was playing better than him. I was stronger from the baseline and I was really feeling good. I had the feeling if I had won the tiebreak I had a chance to win because I was playing better and better. It was very disappointing.”

good luck pim pim :yeah: this should be a real interesting match-up. i hope pim pim has worked on his passing shots :)

When asked in the post-match interview if he was disappointed that Lleyton wasn't in the final, he said "he was the one that screwed up the final. not me" shame Lleyton didn't make it through, it would have been a great match)

Johansson flattens Dent
January 9, 2005

TOWERING Swede Joachim Johansson is nicknamed Pim-Pim, but perhaps Bam-Bam would be more apt after he today unleashed an awesome display of power to win the Next Generation Hardcourts title in Adelaide.

Johansson, the world No.11 and tournament's second seed, beat American Taylor Dent 7-5 6-3, to claim his second tour title.

His first was in Memphis last year, a breakthrough year in which he also made the semi finals of the US Open as he climbed from 113th in the rankings at the start of 2004.

The big-serving 198cm, 89kg, 22-year-old Swede put on a near-faultless display to beat Dent.

He was untroubled on serve throughout the match and regularly put pressure on Dent's serve.

Dent survived three break points in the fifth game of the match, but managed to keep the first set on serve until 5-5, when Johansson gained the first break.

Johansson took the score from deuce to a break point by blasting an off backhand return winner, then fired in another crosscourt backhand return winner on the next point to claim a 6-5 lead.

From there, the set was almost a formality, as the Swede's brilliant serving form allowed him to quickly wrap up the next game, clinching the set with an ace.

Johansson continued to go for big shots as he broke Dent's serve again in the third game of the second set.

Then, up 5-3, he finished the match by again breaking serve, blazing a forehand return winner to complete the victory on his fourth match point.

Johansson, 22, is the boyfriend of Jaslyn Hewitt, Lleyton's sister, and spent the weeks leading up to this tournament in Adelaide, with Lleyton Hewitt as a practice partner.

Hewitt was knocked out of the tournament by Dent in the quarter finals.

Mr and Mrs Hewitt were cheering Johansson on alongside his own parents in the stands as he won today.

His nickname Pim-Pim, a well-known candy in Sweden, came about because his older brother could not pronounce Joachim as a young boy, instead calling him Joa-pim, which stuck and became Pim-Pim.

Johansson Claims Second Career Title

Second seed Joachim Johansson downed fifth seed Taylor Dent 7-5 6-3 for the title of the Next Generation Clubs Australian Men's Hardcourts on Sunday in Adelaide.

Johansson dropped just five points on serve in the opening set, breaking Dent with two backhand return winners to take a 6-5 lead. Johansson served out the first set, closing it with his second ace.

Johansson's form continued in the second set as Dent was not able to pressure Johansson's serve, never reaching break point against the powerful Swede. Johansson broke Dent for the match on his fourth match point.

Dent's normally powerful serve was erratic throughout as he donated 11 double faults and was broken three times. For the match, Johansson lost just 12 points on serve in 10 service games.

Sunday's match was the first-ever meeting between the two.

Johansson, a 22-year-old Swede, is now 2-0 in ATP finals. Last year, he won his only career title in his first attempt, defeating Nicolas Kiefer to win the title in Memphis.

Johansson has reached at the least the quarterfinals in his last seven straight tournaments, including a run to the semifinals at the US Open. Since August when that run started, he is 20-6.

Johansson has now won two straight titles, having closed 2004 by winning the Luxembourg Challenger (d. Carraz).

This was Johansson's first appearance in Adelaide.

Dent, who did not win a title in 2004, was appearing in his sixth career final. He was looking for his first title since October, 2003.

It was the second appearance in Adelaide for the 23-year-old American, and he is now 7-2 all-time there.

Johansson gets 35 INDESIT ATP 2005 Race points and USD $57,750 for the win, while Dent will receives 24 points and take home $33,960.

In doubles, the team of Xavier Malisse and Olivier Rochus claimed just their second career title with a 7-6(5) 6-4 win over Simon Aspelin and Todd Perry.

This was just the sixth time Mallise and Rochus had teamed together. Last year the Belgian duo played all four Grand Slams together as well as the Athens Olympics.

The only previous title for the duo came at Roland Garros in 2004.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID

Dent: “You can't start the year much better than making a final in the first tournament you play, so I'm very happy with the way the week has gone but its a shame I couldn't pull it out in the final but it gives me something to work on. Men's tennis is all about holding serve and if he serves like he did in the final I don't see how guys are going to break him.”

Johansson: “I think I played very well but I still feel like I can improve my serve on my showing this week. I've been practicing out here for a few weeks now and it feels like I am playing at home and maybe that is part of the reason I'm playing well here. It's always nice to feel like you have had a good preparation and won some matches heading into a Grand Slam but it doesn't matter to me whether people say I am going to go all the way or not.”
