THERE was no sign of Home and Away star Bec Cartwright at Lleyton Hewitt's box at the tennis yesterday.

But good mate Andrew McLeod was among the Crows players showing their support, along with Tyson Edwards and Lleyton's parents Glynn and Cherilyn, at the Next Generation Hardcourts championships. (Lleyton was teamed up with coach Roger Rasheed for the match.)

Also seen courtside yesterday was Port Adelaide players Kane Cornes and Warren Tredrea, Adelaide 36ers coach Phil Smyth and basketballer Darryl Pearce.

Andrew and Tyson return to Memorial Drive tonight – along with fellow Crows Ken McGregor and Scott Welsh – for a fun celebrity match at 7pm, before Lleyton plays his first round singles match.

Nova presenter Ryan Fitzgerald also will be watching the tennis action tonight – and will be back tomorrow to sign autographs in the garden square at 1pm.

In the melbourne express (which may not be the most reliable source  ) today they quoted lleyton as saying bec wasn't coming to his first few matches so that he can focus on getting some matches under his belt or something (not a direct quote by any means) but that it would be nice if she could be there if he gets to the semi finals etc.

She knows there's no TV coverage until the semis or the finals so why would she sit in the sun with no TV publicity opportunities. As long as Lleyton doesn't get distracted ala Flip-Delta last year then great. I'd much prefer he compete and rely on himself than become dependent for moral support on a girlfriend again. Coz just in case he's not with Bec anymore I don't want Lleyton to be affected on the tennis court.

Lley spoke about the break up

Hewitt speaks about new love, Rebecca Cartwright
Jaime Morgan
07jan05

IT was hard to decide who was the star at last night's Next Generation Hardcourts championships. While top-seed Lleyton Hewitt was earning enthusiastic home-town applause on the court, his new girlfriend, Home and Away star Rebecca Cartwright, seemed to be the crowd favourite off it.

Flanked by Hewitt's entourage, including Adelaide Crows champion Andrew McLeod and coach Roger Rasheed, Cartwright cheered on her new beau from Memorial Drive's southern stand.
Despite a few looks between the pair, the world number three didn't disappoint his fans with a resounding 6-1 6-4 straight sets win over Argentinian Agustin Calleri.

Arriving in Adelaide just in time for Hewitt's match yesterday, Cartwright cut a striking figure in a white singlet-top and black pants.

After the match, Hewitt said he was happy to have played well for Cartwright.

"She hasn't seen too many tennis matches so it was nice to get out there and not get off to a slow start," Hewitt said.

"I don't know how much she knows about tennis but it was good to come through with flying colours."

Hewitt also spoke of his break-up with Belgium tennis star Kim Clijsters last October.

"I think I was as mentally tough as I've ever been," he said.

"I felt like I handled the situation both on and off the court extremely well. I felt like I needed to."

Cartwright and Hewitt left together about an hour after the game, chauffeured by McLeod in his black Jeep Cherokee.

And while Hewitt was happy to sign autographs for the large crowd of fans, Cartwright settled for a quick "hello" before jumping in the car.

It was like drawing teeth, but Lleyton Hewitt was slightly more forthcoming than usual about his love life, past and present, following last night's win.

Watching Hewitt was his new squeeze, Bec Cartwright.

"It was good. She hasn't seen too many tennis matches. I don't know how much she knows about tennis but I obviously played all right out there," he said, laughing.

He was less cheerful, though, when asked about his recent break-up with Kim Clijsters.

"I'm not going to go into it too much, but at the end of the day, I had to go out there and get ready for the Masters Cup at the end of last year, and that was a huge focus and priority for me," he said. "I was as mentally tough as I've ever been throughout that whole period."

Thanks for all the pics and articles Nomad. I didn't think he was gonna reveal much about the breakup. I don't think he ever will. Lleyton went to the NT and "held Andrew's hand" for that documentary. Now Andrew's probably trying to make things a bit easier for Lleyton. Plus Lleyton probably doesn't want to be figuring out where to park his inconspicuous little car when he arrives for a match

Oh you people are hopeless  I put "held his hand" in inverted commas to show that I meant the expression which means providing moral and practical support. Not that there would be anything wrong with them holding hands in a less metaphorical sense of course ;)

There was apparently actually a rumour among AFL fans when they moved in together, before Bec came on the scene  Must have been a slow news day.

Lisbeth
01-07-2005, 02:34 AM
The reason Ll went to the Northern Territory with Andrew back in early December or so was because they made a documentary up there about Andrew's life. He grew up there. I read something about it showing what a great role model he is to both aboriginal and other Australian kids. Anyway, apparently (according to some late night sports bulletin I saw) Lleyton encouraged Andrew to participate in this documentary in the first place and went along to provide support while it was filmed. Then they went fishing.

Of course, some people would probably scoff at the idea of LLeyton advising someone on how to handle the media but there you go.

I could see why AFL fans would think that there's a Lleyton-Andrew McLeod love match going on. Both of their respective relationships with women broke down at the same time and they'd been spending lots of time together...rendezvous in Tokyo and the Northern Territory...at one point during the earthquake in Tokyo, Andrew said he and Lleyton ran outside in nothing, but their underwear :o and then they moved in together. :p

Oh, my God, B-list Bec is a . . . BEARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! .

That must be it. Or Lleyton swings both ways. :o Not that there's anything wrong with that ;) And they're having one big happy menage-a-trois at the Hewitt Lakeside residence to the dismay of Rachel and Kim.

Um, ew :p

Jas and Elke maybe, but Jas & Kim I don't think so. Jas might see it as betraying her brother (though that may sound a bit extreme)

Evidently, Lleyton liked having a woman in his life supporting him. I think he should do whatever makes him happy. Kim was great while she lasted.

But now I look at the pictures of her at the USO, and I see that she is hardly smiling in any of them. She didn't look happy. I think Kim is happier now. :)

Totally agree. When Lleyton was with Kim he always looked reluctant to answer any questions about their relationship from the very beginning. He wanted his private life to stay private. I think that's who Lleyton really is. A private man thrust into the spotlight as a young tennis prodigy. Part of the reason why he didn't look as happy was because he never wanted to give the press an opening to ask him questions about his private life hence that press conference Lleyton poker face. Once you smile and seem approachable, the wall breaks down and the media starts asking intrusive questions. They could get away with asking Kim more personal questions because she's always been less guarded, smiley and approachable.

I certainly hope so. Much as I like him, the world doesn't need two Flips I don't need to see Ll and B-List posing like grinning monkeys for the press
Really these flamboyant displays make me wonder  Why the total 180 degree turn from Lleyton, this self admittedly private guy? All of a sudden he wants to pose for pics and is very willing to answer questions about Bec. See: Nomad's post re Lleyton's press conference.

Totally agree. His actions speak very loud and clear because it's so out of character these flamboyant displays of affection. Typical rebound behavior that screams: I got dumped. I just hate it how guys seem to need/use a trophy gal for their pride and ego. I hope you're right and that Lleyton stays cool and not superficial. Hope he doesn't turn into another Flip. And maybe she just dislikes Jaslyn or Jaslyn dislikes her. It wouldn't surprise me if they were competitive with each other both playing on the WTA Tour and both 21 years of age. It must've been hard for Jaslyn to be around Kim considering they're the same age, but Kim's been more successful on tour.

If you guys think that Lleyton's family is weird or dysfunctional, then I only say that they're perfectly normal next to Flip's. His dad routinely screams at him, is rumored to strike him in anger, and completely dominates his life in a way that Lleyton's parents, as omnipresent as they are, never do. His dad hasn't been on speaking terms with his mother and sister for years. I've always thought that Mark's dynamic with his family was the principal reason why he is the way he is, especially his inability to keep a girlfriend for any appreciable length of time. I have no doubt that Mark wishes he had wonderful, loving parents just like Glynn and Cherilyn.

Exactly. Whether he remains with Bec or not, I agree that this change is completely out of character, Lleyton can enjoy himself all he pleases, but he should make sure that he doesn't keep fooling himself. Otherwise things could backfire in his face. Just use Flip as the example.

Hi there! Great pictures - seeing as he apppears to be seriously reworking his body what should he concentrate on next? I am guessing that by the OZ Open 06 he will have worked on his pecs and six pack and by Oz 2007 on his legs. By that time I reckon he will be the ultimate physical specimen!

btw you all crack me up with your sun glasses critique. Although to be honest I find Bec's white sun glasses a lot less questionable than those oversized black pair I think I saw her wear in a previous pic (it might have been one of the matches in Adelaide) ;)

I know a guy who had his ear cut off because of melanoma and is now in the hospital having chemotherapy because they found nodes in his lungs. I haven't heard what his prognosis is, but it can't be good. :(

Melanoma is a very very scary thing.

She could use some advice with clothes, I think. She's trying really hard to look like a little sex kitten. It was hot though yesterday, to be fair.

virgil23
01-13-2005, 08:28 PM
Wow; if that outfit makes the girl a slut then where I'm from (Caribbean in case anyone was wondering. ST.Lucia to be exact) there is an abundance of whores walking around. It was hot, some people would have been bold enough to just put the tank top and jeans and nothing else. However she actually put something over it; so I really don't see the big deal here. Her boobs are not hanging out, she's not wearing some shorts that are barely covering her butt; she's just showing some skin on the side. My god, the scandal.

Oh and I guess it's just me but I actually liked the green top. It was kind of funky and hippie looking.

I don't think it has anything to do with you being an American. I'm American and I think calling her a slut is bit extreme. She just doesn't know how to dress that's all. They dress like that down in the south, but than again its extremely hot down there. I wouldn't know because where I come from it's 30 degrees right now.

I guess there's just an element of what you're used to because that's just what many young lasses are getting around in these days in Sydney. Positively girl next door  Then again, it's been 35 degrees C here, and it's not especially uncommon for people to wear swimming cossies in public in Australia anyway! At least Bec looks good in it - not everyone's shape suits that look ;)

But if you'd like to conduct a scientific sluttiness comparison, I can think of at least a couple of American tennis players we could stand her next to ...

dagmar7
01-13-2005, 10:52 PM
If I were a casting agent, I would classify Bec as the fresh-faced girl-next-door type. I'm not really getting 'slutty' from those photos of her.

'Swimming cossie/cossy' (sp) ...Is that what that green thing she's wearing is? I've never heard that. :D

I was just checking out the new Aus Open fashions for the women, and I have to say the Serena Williams one is really great! :D I even like the spats. :o

A cossie is just Aussie for a bathing suit :) We like to add "ie" to the end of as many words as possible  Aussie, barbie, cossie, mozzie, etc

I don't actually think that is a cossie, but when you're used to people walking round in a one piece, or even a bikini top, with shorts or sarong, I guess an expanse of skin under whatever that green thing may be isn't so confronting ;)

Lisbeth

Lisbeth
01-13-2005, 10:59 PM
Well Bec IS in fact cast as a girl next door, pretty much, at least from my extremely limited recent viewing of H&A!

The Serena outfit is weird (I particularly find those boot thingies weird) but a lot better than some of her recent efforts  Those girls are two of the few people in the world who can look good in yellow. I normally loathe yellow but I like it on them.

No worries. :) Sluttiness is in the eye of the beholder (and the beholder's culture), after all.

She sure likes the colour green. Edit: By 'She' I meant Bec, not you (tennisfan16)...in case that wasn't clear.

I'm not surprised to hear it, although I've never seen the show. ;)

Yellow is vile for me, but I agree that it really looks great on both Venus and Serena, much better than the pink they seem to both favour.

I think the Power Ranger look is good for her, better than the biker chick USO outfit, and far better than when she wears the ruffles and pink fairy princess stuff.

Adding my 2 cents worth here - 'slutty' was not the impression I got when I saw the picture of Bec. The first thought that popped into my head, purely instinctively, was 'Monster Truck Rallye' - I am probably enforcing a stereotype here (and if any of you happen to be big monster truck ralleye fans, I do apologize), but the outfit reminds me of the type of get up you see at those type of sporting functions.

Am I just imaginging it or has Bec taken to standing up between change overs? And if so, is it during every change over? It's a totally irrelevant question but I was just curious.

01-14-2005, 12:06 AM
Oh my god, Panda! 'Monster truck rally, is exactly the right words for that outfit!! That's so funny! Very Southern as I was saying before! I just don't understand though why people always have something bad to say about her. Being in the US, I don't know anything about the soap Home & Away or anything about Bec Cartwright but if she makes Lleyton happy than that's great! She seems like a really nice person but maybe those from Australia can shed a little more light on the actress for those on the other side of the earth.

I would also be interested in finding out a little more about her as an actress as here in Canada we don't get the show either. They used to show "Neighbours a few years ago for a short while but that somehow just disapeared over night. It did introduce me to Kylie Minogue and Guy (great, I just forgot his name!!) and the bloke who plays Kristen's father on the O.C. How popular is 'Home and Away'? Is it one of the top ranked shows, is it a day time or night time show? Also, is Bec's character one of/or the main character and how well known is Bec not only in Australia but internationally? I think the show is aired in England? I used to watch a lot of day time soaps (Another World, General Hospital) a few years back and I know that they have a very large and rabid yet very distinctive fan base, mainly stay at home mums and students. I remember reading articles mentioning that there was a very distinct line between daytime soap actors and prime time soap actors in terms of respect in the industry (former soap actors who made the transition from day time to prime time or the movies would apparently often keep quiet about their day time career).

Sorry to be clogging up the pictures thread with these questions but I wonder if any of you can give some insight?

Danni
01-14-2005, 12:51 AM
H&A isn't a top ranked show, but it is popular among kids and teens and I duno how to explain it, it's just a show that everyone else kinda knows vaguely the characters and stuff, cos it's been around for agggges and it's on every week-day night. And yes, Bec is oen of the main characters and she's pretty well known in Australia, most teens would know who she is. I don't *think* she's well known internationally ..hope that helps :)

btw, I'm really lost, what photo of Bec is everyone talking about?

Lisbeth
01-14-2005, 12:53 AM
It's on at 7pm and it's fairly popular - has been for a long time. It's the sort of show suitable for the whole family - some of the themes are a little bit racy but no overt sex or violence or anything like that. I know it's shown in the UK, don't know about anything else. Sorry I can't be more help but it's been over 10 years since I watched it with any regularity ;)

Adding my two cents - most people know of it and vaguely who the actors are, round here it's a bit of a 'guilty pleasure', something that you just watch for a bit of fun. Bec's character, Hayley, is the happy, smiley, 'girl-next-door' and she almost died last night! On the show she wears stuff a lot mored revealing than the green thing - it is set right next to a beach :)

As much I'd love Lleyton to shave off that "beard" of his, I have to say that he looked quite restrained in the facial hair department next to Minar. I'm not even sure there's a name for what Ivo has growing on his face (maybe mildew).
