Jeff & Tomas lost R1 in Doha, and then Jeff got in Auckland as a lucky loser/alternate with Alberto Martin--they lost R1 to Jim Thomas & Fernando Gonzalez.
I expect Jeff is now in Melbourne, preparing for the AO!

Jeff played with Karsten Braasch--they beat Ancic/Ljubicic in R1 6-4, 6-4. Then lost to Beck/Sargsian in R2 4-6, 7-6(2), 5-7. Unlucky guys, amazing win though--Delray next up.

Jeff is in Phoenix, Arizona this week for the Tennis Channel Open in Scottsdale. He plays with Mario Ancic of Croatia, and they play Thomas Van Houdt & Irakli Labadze in R1... PLEASE Win Jeff, you need this to get confidence, and to get your ranking back up. Mario has a big serve and good hands, and has a little experience playing doubles, while Tom Van Houdt is also a doubles specialist, and I would guess Irakli kind of hovers between singles and dubs
Good luck boet!

ae wowww

What a crap match of Kiwi and Rainer! :retard: :retard:
A doubles with such good teams should normally go to a 5 set match, I really expected much more from this match, Kiefer/Schüttler incredibly bad, they never played together anymore since Athens and they played line newbies  :o

Moodie was incredible, completely unbreakable the whole match and terrific volleys at the net. And Coetzee mostly also did a good job, you saw his doubles experience.

ae wowww
03-15-2005, 05:58 PM

Yeah, Jeff is in Mexico for these 2 weeks. I think he is not playing this
week, he couldn't get in to this week's challenger or wasn't feeling good anyhow(injured or ill). Next week he will play a challenger there . Then he'll go to Bermuda then to Houston before going to Europe.

04-01-2005, 07:09 AM
Jeff is in the final in Leon, but had luck in the first round against the best team (Ketola/Moodie), when Moodie got cramps.

I spoke to Jeff in Queens on a couple of occasions, and managed to watch him practice and play his first round. In their first match, they beat Beck/Levinsky 61 36 62
On the first point of Beck's serve, he let go of the racket LMAO!
They then lost a very tight match against the Bryan brothers 76(3) 76 (5). I would imagine Jeff will either play Nottingham or 's-hertogenbosch, before Wimbledon. I'll keep updated!

Jeff signed into Wimbledon's mixed draw as an alternate with Jill Craybas, and unfortunately they didn't get in, despite being just one place from replacing anyone!

Anyway, he is now in Newport, Rhode Island for the Campbell's Hall of Fame Championships. He and Wes Moodie face Gilles Elseneer/Yeu Tzuoo Wang in the first round. The match is scheduled for today-fourth (and last) match on Court 3, from 11.00am. Good luck!

I have photos from Queens (and some old Davis Cup pictures) that I will be adding to the site very shortly. Unfortunately I was not able to get to his Wimbledon match, but I have been able to get hold of a copy of his Davis Cup match :D It is great to watch!

I would imagine after Newport, Jeff will head to Aptos, for the challenger there, before going on to play the US Hardcourt season-Indianapolis, Washington, L.A. etc.

Fyrstenberg/Matkowski beat Jeff and Chris 62 36 76(7).. It was a great match-Jeff and Chris were quickly on the back foot in the first set, but recovered very well. They went on to recover several breaks in third set, before succumbing in the breaker-very close, and could've gone either way. Anyway, it's a semi-final result for Jeff, which is fantastic-and it's brilliant he and Chris are competing together again! That will for sure improve his ranking this week, as well as his confidence.

They are now in San Marino for the CEPU Open challenger starting tomorrow. They are the #3 seeds, and play Alessio Di Mauro/Alessandro Motti in the first round.

I've arrived early, as Jeff & Kenneth are still on court, but by the time I submit the post, the match will be over :D

JCKC broke twice in the first to take the set 6-2, before breaking one more time in the second to wrap up a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Artoni/Puerta. From the looks of things, Kenneth's serve was untouchable!

They now face Olympic doubles champions Fernando Gonzalez & Nicolas Massu in the 2nd round.

Why didn't Moodie play? :( Now they are 3rd league and have to win 3 ties next year against other 3rd league teams.

'Moodie's decision not to play was taken after much soul searching, explained De Jager, who is currently in New York meeting with the players.
"On the one hand Wesley does not want to let the team down, but at the same time, he has made plans to play on hardcourt in the Far East the weeks following the Davis Cup.
"He is very keen to use those tournaments to get his ranking up so that he get direct entry into the Australian Open in January. He feels that spending a week playing and practising on clay could hamper his chances."
One also has to take into account that the Wimbledon doubles champion, who is ranked 110 in singles, is certainly not at his best on clay courts and has usually avoided playing tournaments on that surface.'

In summary :)

It is annoying that they will have to play against low-ranked teams, but maybe it is a good chance to build a team, some confidence, and perhaps I can get to see Jeff play DC :D

Unfortunately, despite putting up a great effort, Jeff & Rogier lost against Bhupathi/Damm today 5-3, 1-5, 3-5. This is the first time Jeff has played under the new scoring system, but it seems he has adapted well already!
So I guess Jeff will now head to England for the challenger in Southampton. As I said before, I will do my best to get there and see Jeff & Rogier play. Stay tuned!

Today I spoke with Jeff at Sutton, and he looked great on-court, as did Chris (Haggard) and Travis (Parrott). Jeff will probably head to Southampton either tomorrow or the next day, for the challenger there. The doubles entry lists are out for week 43, and Jeff & Roger have entered Lyon, in France. Perhaps if I am bored over the half term holiday, I will make a trip there. Sign-in deadline is tonight at 9pm BST, so keep an eye on that drawsheet. No other news to report, stay tuned.

Ok, basically I had an awesome day :D Jeff was practicing during the singles final, and spotted me-so came up to chat with me, asked me if I was going back to London after. I wished him luck, and then watched a nail-biter of a final!
When he collected his cheque in the presentation, he did a kind of spin which cracked me up, and he looked up & gave me thumbs up when they said his name, that made me feel nice :D
After the presentation, I went into the locker room and he asked if I wanted to go back to London with him. He introduced me to Rogier Wassen, who was with his dad-both these guys are legends!!
Then we waited for the driver, and Jeff gave me a bottle of water & an orange, courtesy of the tournament :D We got in the car, and I shook hands with Travis Parrott, and said 'hi' to Tripp [he was in the back, so not easy for me to turn].
Then we took the 3.30 to Clapham Junction--Jeff went and bought me a sandwich while we waited for the train
We chatted for the whole 2 hours or whatever it was, he sent me photos of him and his family via bluetooth, told me so much-I also never realised he was such a celeb in South Africa!
He also showed me his rackets, and gave me a maroon oakley wristband, its awesome :D Eventually, we got off and each took different trains. He gave me his mobile number and said he'd call me after Lyon/when he's back in London, and take me to Nandos in Wimbledon
What an awesome guy, I think--extremely funny too! Plus he is so eager to make the website really jazzy ;)! Anyway, sorry if I went on too long-just wanted to write it down so I remember it really :)

:D Jeff & Rogier won in three sets against Suk/Vizner: 6-4, 4-6, 7-6.
I don't yet have a tiebreak score for that final set, as Lyon's tournament site isn't displaying one. But regardless, that is a good result, and they now go on to face Tommy Robredo & Davide Sanguinetti in the quarter finals. I will also update with tomorrow's order of play, they will probably have a later match than they did today. Stay tuned.

Jeff & Rogier play Robredo/Sanguinetti second on Court 1 tomorrow. Play begins at 4.30pm local time on this court. I am very interested to see how this match goes, both opponents are obviously strong singles players, but Robredo is becoming slightly more known for doubles as well, due to his DC performance(s). Good luck boys.

Today was not a great day for Tommy Robredo & Davide Sanguinetti. Having lost their respective singles matches, they subsequently lost 3-6, 3-6 to Jeff & Rogier! That puts Jeff and Rog through to the semi-finals, where they face #2 seeds Jonathan Erlich & Andy Ram of Israel, tomorrow. I don't really need to say too much about Erlich/Ram, their reputation speaks for itself.

So Jeff & Rogier lost 3-6, 1-6 to Llodra/Santoro in the final just now, but I sincerely hope Jeff is very pleased with the week's performance. This time last year, he and Ashley Fisher lost in the first round of Stockholm, meaning he had no points to defend this week-yipee, he gets to keep all the points from the final! Jeff is not in the Aachen draw, so I can only assume he is taking the week off, as all other challengers appear to be in other continents, which makes me uncertain he would want to travel unecessarily. I have also added some photos from the Robredo/Sanguinetti quarter-final, please have a look and let me know what you think! Stay tuned.

I am waiting until 18:30, if he gets on the flight (he is on stand-by), then I'll see him in the New Year, if not, I may see him tomorrow etc.
Nothing else to report, I don't think - please visit the website over the break, and show your support to JC for 2006! Congrats on an awesome year mate, keep it real !

Jeff & Rogier are now in the draw in Doha, having been Alternates before replacing Hanescu/Minar. They faced Haas/Lopez in the first round, and won 4 & 4. An interesting article on the upcoming DC tie against Georgia

----- (

Wesley Moodie returns to the South African Davis Cup team for their Euro/Africa Zone Group Two tie against Georgia from April 7 to 9.

Moodie opted not to play the tie against Morocco last year, which South Africa lost, but he will join Rik de Voest, Jeff Coetzee and new cap Izak van der Merwe in Tblisi, Georgia.

Van der Merwe has been at college in the US where he has produced some useful results. De Voest got into the main draw in Memphis last week when German Nicolas Kiefer was forced to withdraw and firstly scored a straight sets win over Swede Jonas Bjorkman, before losing a tight three-set match to new British star Andy Murray.

John-Laffnie de Jager, who will captain the team, said on Monday he was surprised by the decision of the Georgians to play the tie indoors on carpet. "Both Wesley and Rik are well suited to that surface. I thought they would have gone for clay but obviously we'll take it.

"It's great to have Wesley back in the team and in addition, Rik has been playing great tennis lately."

De Jager added that he had decided to give Van der Merwe a chance as he needed to assess the younger players. "We took Kevin Anderson to Morocco and I now know what he can do. Izak is a talented player and now it is time to see if he can step up to the next level."

Coetzee has been a regular in the team over the past few years and his doubles prowess has often helped the South Africans win the pivotal doubles rubber. He is likely to team up with Wimbledon champion Moodie in Tblisi.

In keeping with the South African Tennis Association's (Sata) policy of taking a junior along with the team, Eric Fisher from the Eastern Cape will be accompanying the team to Georgia.

Although currently ranked 151, Georgia's left-handed Irakli Labadze is a highly talented player who has been ranked as high as 42 in the world. He has scored wins over Andre Agassi, Gaston Gaudio, Carlos Moya, James Blake and Jarkko Nieminen. In 1998 he made the Junior Wimbledon final where he lost to current world number one Roger Federer.

Labadze also has a 12-1 win-loss Davis Cup record.

Irakli Ushangishvili is the most capped Davis Cup player while Lado Chikhladze and David Kvernadze have made up the balance of the team in the past.

Sata, who have battled to find a sponsor over the years, have managed to get support from South African Airways. "We are committed to sustain South African sport globally and to carry our sporting diplomats to the world," said SAA CEO Khaya Ngcqula.

SA team: Wesley Moodie (ranked 70 singles, 21 doubles) Rik de Voest (ranked 163 singles, 151 doubles), Jeff Coetzee (ranked 62 doubles), Izak van der Merwe (ranked 707 singles, 652 doubles).

I doubt Jeff is too bothered at all about the singles, just wanted to hit some balls, and gets a little more cash and can now focus on tomorrow's match.

They match fifth on Centre court from 12noon tomorrow (Monday) - maybe JMG knows if this may be shown in Germany on TV?

Jeff & Wayne were beaten in an extremely tight match against Auckland/Delgado, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 3-6. The match was very well attended, and Jeff had some family at the match (mom, girlfriend + bro). This kind of match must be a huge physical shock to all the players - used to playing a maximum of 2 sets + 10 point match tiebreak, without any deuces. As a result, Jeff was having some problem with his hip, and had treatment at almost every change of ends towards the latter stages of the match. They played some truly great points and hung in there, recovering one of two breaks in the final set, but it was not enough to hold off their opponents. Auckland served extremely well, basically ruling out the possibility of breaking him towards the end.

ae wowww
06-30-2006, 10:16 PM
Jeff & Ai eventually got on court about 8pm, since Ai's [successful] singles match against Hingis went to three sets. They got on Court 11, which was probably a bit of a scheduling error due to the popularity of Venus Williams, and the size of the seating on 11. Bob Bryan served extremely well, and it is likely both Jeff & Ai were pretty tired - Jeff also felt a little unwell before the match. In the end, Bob & Venus overpowered their smaller opponents 6-3, 6-3 to progress to the second round.

Jeff is now done with Wimbledon, but since per diem will last until Tuesday for him, he will probably stay in London until maybe Wednesday. I would expect him to possibly take a little time at home, and then head to Newport.

I will be sad to see him go  But I'm confident I'll make at least a couple of trips to the States or something this summer :)

Jeff beat Heuberger (currently ranked #255) 7-5, 6-3. They got on Court 4 after all - a few stats for you:
Jeff served at 61% on his first serve, winning 72% of those points. On his second serve, he won 61% of the points also. He convert 4 of 9 break points, and hit a total of 4 double faults.

He will now face #8 seed Michael Russell of the United States, probably tomorrow. Jeff has only ever played Russell once, in a futures main draw in 2001, where he lost 3 & 1 - to the player now ranked #202.

Found this small piece regarding the SA Davis Cup tie vs Latvia - even though Jeff will not play - I thought it is relevant:

Contrast that to a tiny announcement that snuck in under the radar this week about the South African Davis Cup team to play Latvia in July.
There was a time when the announcement of every Davis Cup team was accompanied by an official function and some fanfare. This time there was just a bald, 10-line item noting the fact and the names of the South African players.

One suspects the tennis authorities accepted that they did not have much chance for good publicity for their announcement, with such an abundance of other sport around.

Who, after all, would be particularly interested in SA versus Latvia in the second division of the Euro-Africa zone of the Davis Cup? So they probably decided it was better to just save the money that might be spent on a big function, and keep the announcement down to the bare minimum. For some, it’s a sad state of affairs. But that is the way it is and is probably going to stay.

South Africa's number one tennis player Wesley Moodie will not be in the starting line-up for their crucial Europe/Africa Zone Group II Davis Cup tie against Latvia from July 21 to 23.

The tie will take place in Jurmala, Latvia, and will be played outdoors on red clay. The winner of this tie will remain in Group II next year, the loser will be relegated to Europe/Africa Zone Group III in 2007.

The tie will be played during the American hard court season, the main build-up events to the US Open at the end of August, and Moodie has opted to play those tournaments.

So in his absence, Rik de Voest, ranked 137 in singles, will lead the team and joining him will be youngsters Kevin Anderson, Izak van der Merwe and Fritz Wolmarans while the experience will come from veteran doubles specialist Chris Haggard.

John-Laffnie de Jager will once again captain the team.

Anderson was a member of the squad that played in Morocco while Van der Merwe participated in the tie earlier this year against Georgia.

Wolmarans, who is now being coached by former SA top 30 player Marcos Ondruska, was included as a non-playing member of the squad that played against Slovakia at the Wanderers in Johannesburg in 2004.

Haggard has played in three Davis Cup ties and has built up a 3-1 win/loss record. His only defeat came in the tie against Slovakia at the Wanderers when Jeff Coetzee unfortunately was injured in the opening set. Despite Coetzee virtually hobbling around the court, the pair still managed to put up a superb display before losing to Dominik Hrbaty and Michal Mertinak 5-7 5-7 6-7(5-7).

Only six names appear on the ATP Tour rankings for Latvia with Ernest Gulbis, at 278, being their highest ranked player.

The other players with rankings are Andis Juska (478), Deniss Pavlovs (720), Adrians Zguns (1276), Janis Skroderis and Karlis Lejnieks, who with just one point, are ranked joint 1529.

A shame Wes will not be playing - but I guess it's not beneficial for him to do so. Hopefully the other boys can keep SA in Group II for 2007. A loss would mean SA relegated to Group III - basically the black hole, removed from the face of tennis!

Jeff & Justin's match has been held over until today due to rain yesterday. They will hopefully play second match on Court 1 from 11am, again after an appropriate rest, as Justin has to finish his singles match.

In other news, the SA Davis Cup team has been selected to play Latvia and it is as follows:
- Rik de Voest
- Izak Van Der Merwe
- Fritz Wolmarans
- Chris Haggard
They will again be captained by Laffies

Ernest Gulbis (ATP #278)
Andis Juska (#478)
Deniss Pavlovs (#720)
Karlis Lejnieks (#1529)
Captain: Maris Rozentals

I would expect just Gulbis & Juska to play all singles & doubles.

Jeff and Justin will play their semi on Court 1, not before 5.30pm today. A win would see them in tomorrow's final, which will be televised live, against Kendrick/Melzer or Fisher/Healey. Jeff and Justin are now the only seeds that remain in the draw.

Jeff is making his first appearance on Center court today, since he and Justin yesterday beat de Voest/Kubot 6-4, 6-4 to progress to the final where they play the wildcard team of Robert Kendrick & Jurgen Melzer. Justin is also in the singles final which starts at 2pm today - the doubles proceeds this, presumably with a reasonable break for Justin.

Ahead of Indy, the draw has been made and Jeff & Dominik Hrbay are seeded 4. They face the US pairing of Bobby Reynolds & Andy Roddick, in the first round.

This is Jeff's best career result at Newport, and his 8th career ATP final. He is aiming for his first ATP title since 2002 - his fourth title overall.

ae wowww
07-16-2006, 09:50 PM
Despite being a break up late in the first set, Jeff and Justin were unable to close it out, and lost 6-7(3), 0-6 to Kendrick/Melzer. This is obviously disappointing, as Jeff could've taken a lot of confidence from this, and instead start in Indianapolis on a slightly negative note. Obviously, there are ranking points, and prize money to be taken into account, but nonetheless, one more win really would have been the icing on the cake.

A bit of a sad night to be honest, particularly as Justin came away empty handed  It will now be a hurry to get to Indy for tomorrow's match.

ae wowww
07-18-2006, 06:47 AM
Jeff will be snapping that he was forced to play the very next day after a final in another tournament - presumably Roddick's desire to play doubles before singles was seen as more important by tournament directors, and possibly as a result, Jeff & Dominik were defeated 4-6, 4-6. This is poor organisation by the tournament, and now Jeff will have to accept the $2,000 prize money he receives, and also the loss of points (2005 he made the QFs). Next will be the Countrywide Classic in Los Angeles.

In the second rubber, Ernests Gulbis beat Fritz Wolmarans, 7-5, 6-3, 6-2.

South Africa has now lost to Latvia, as Hags/Izak lost the crucial doubles rubber, 2-6, 6-4, 3-6, 2-6. This means SA will be relegated to Group III for 2007 - a group that takes a long time to get out of, and involves playing a low level of teams, in a different format. I am curious whether as a result, Jeff will want to help them pull back up; or whether he will not be interested in playing consequently.

07-22-2006, 09:36 PM LA Draw when available

07-23-2006, 12:00 AM
I don't think Moodie would have been of much help in the tie against Latvia. He's as hopeless on clay as the others. IMO it all comes down to the vincible tie against Georgia when the captain couldn't bring De Voest and Haggard with him and bet everything on Van der Merwe, an unexperienced college player, instead of going for Whitehouse. Plus they were unlucky with the draw getting two away ties. If they got a home tie and put up a grass court they would be pretty much a tough team to beat.

Time for another captain to step in IMO (maybe Wayne Ferreira?).

You're right to be honest man.. Georgia was the breaking point of this whole situation - it all has happened so quickly. Is Whitehouse not usually chosen for DC, or does he not wish to play? I find it a little surprising, particularly considering his form of late.

I have no clue to be honest, but it's weird. I'm not saying it because of his good results this summer (wins over Safin, Philippoussis and Gimelstob), but mainly because his experience stands out in comparison to the others (barring Moodie and De Voest). He had an awesome career as a junior, has a good experience at challenger level, and even though lately he hasn't been that active, he's still playing the qualies of the big events and putting up good fights. But he's a strange case, doesn't play very often even though he has the potential to be top 200 at least. He was even playing the World Team Tennis exhos a while ago.

Week of 14th August, Jeff & Robert Kendrick played the Bronx challenger, making the semi-final. They beat Nikita Kryvonos and Denis Zivkovic of the USA(!) 6-4, 6-2 in the first round, and subsequently defeated Yen-Hsun Lu & Danai Udomchoke 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. Jeff has been playing an exhibition event in Hamptons, NY in preparation for the Open - instead of playing New Haven. They lost 1st round to O'Brien/Reneberg 67 in the 3rd, so played the consolation event - where they reached the final. In the final, they were a set up, but it rained the whole day so the match was cancelled.

In the USO, Jeff & Rogier are in the bottom half of the draw and face Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo & Albert Montanes. Jeff has second round points to defend from last year, and I think he has a good chance of doing so - he has a lot of support this coming fortnight, and seems pretty pumped. Fingers crossed that the hip gives him no trouble!
