WG 05 R1: Fra-Swe He he Wilander has already started the trash talk.

Wilander is not intimidated by the clay

France has chosen clay as a surface for the DC tie vs. Sweden this spring which will be played indoors.

-They rather choose a surface that suits us badly than one that suits them the best, says DC captain Mats Wilander to SVT Sport.

-Their best player, Grosjean, isn't comfortable on clay. But they're afraid of "Pim-pim" Johansson and the fast game of Söderling, says the former clay-court specialist, and he admits his coaching is at its best on clay.

-On clay it's more about waiting for the right opportunity. Me, I went for doing as few mistakes as possible instead of pushing for a deciding shot, says Wilander modestly.

Hoping for a change of generations

Wilander counts in the six players he has to work with. Five of which ranked among the top 60: Joachim Johansson(16), Jonas Björkman(47), Thomas Johansson(48), Robin Söderling(50) and Thomas Enqvist(59), furthermore rising star Michael Ryderstedt.

But Wilander isn't quiet about his dream scenario.

-I hope Söderling and "Pim-pim" will take over now. They could play well on clay. Söderling was good in Båstad(semifinals) and away they don't have to feel the pressure.

None of the players will have the opportunity to practise on clay before the tie. But Wilander is optimistic:

-I guess the French think they will have an easier time readjusting their game to clay. But I'm not sure about that, I think it's a 50/50 chance. And serving is still an important element and in that area we're probably the stronger part.

The tie is played in Strasbourg March 4-6

Anyway I hope the Swedes will beat France anyway.

Interesting comments by Wilander, but even a man of his considerable skill on the claycourt tactics is going to have problems trying to coach these indoor hard/carpet bash and bang players like Pim Pim and Soderling to a victory here.

I wonder who the French will play with, but at least Mats will try and liven up the tie.

Funny stuff about Grosjean there
And all the rankings are wrong.

Grosjean he has made the semis twice at RG. I mean I wonder who the second singles player will be. Yes, the rankings are out of synch, it will be funny seeing PimPim play on clay and Soderling allegedly has an allergy to all clay that is not Swedish.

For once I believe more in Söderling this time. If Wilander can keep him calm then he can do pretty good. But then again France has plenty of pretty good clay-court players.

If they can't play well on clay tactically with Mats, then there are some problems.

 Here's Mats from the week of the draw.

Sweden drew France in DC

Unseeded Sweden drew France in the first round of DC. The tie will be played March 4-6 next year. France has home-court advantage.

- It feels a bit like France's days of glory are over, says a pretty content DC captain Mats Wilander.
The victor will meet the winner of the Russia- Chile tie.

Last time Sweden met France in DC was in the final in Malmö 1996. The French won that tie after Nicklas Kulti lost the deciding rubber in a five set thriller against Arnaud Boetsch.

France has the bad habit to lose on clay at home... (2 lost finals on clay in Nice then in Paris...)
Moreover the players play so badly since the last year... Sebastien is always injured, he's not at his top, Arnaud doesn't win 2 matches in a row, PHM neither. Santoro/LLodra are not brillant neither.
I don't see how I could be positive. And Johannson and Soderling play very well so...

Yes I know that, but if you look the lasts results of the french players, Grosjean isn't in a good shape, santoro is just back from an injury, clement doesn't play well these last time, Llodra doesn't play well either in single....

I would see "Paulo" Mathieu, for sure because he his the best french player on clay,Llodra and santoro for the double and clement plus someone like Monfils or Haehnel as sparring partner, or if next week preparation training camp goes well one of these 2 players can also play in single!!!

Some excerpts of Forget's declarations after the official announcement. Source: AFP, translated by me.

"I think that it's with those players that we have the more chances to win, because they have a great motivation, they're waiting for revenge and they have experience."

About the fact that Santoro hasn't been selected..."Fabrice hasn't played much in the previous months because of numerous injuries. He's lacking results and marks. But it isn't impossible that he comes back in the future"

I highly doubt this to be true...Yes, Guy and Fabrice don't have the best relations, and they probably never will...but Forget is a guy who is too respectfull of every player, especially Jonas, to be mad at Fabrice because of this double partnership. Of course Marine, comments on France Television are made also by former players, as Arnaud, Guy, Cédric or Henry. But what spoils everything is that they are usually associated to 3 ppl that I simply can't bear listening to...I name Michel Drey, Lionel Chamoulaud and even Jean-Paul Loth. They're so boring...And the interviews, when they are made by Nelson, they're wonderful. When they are lead by that blondy Valérie Pérez, I must force myself to keep on watching, because what the players will say will be more interesting than some of her stupid questions...

Wilander is very popular in France I think. He's my big idol so I hope I'll have the opportunity to speak with him. I kept a mag cover I had of him from 1987 (Figaro Magazine), just to make him sign on it. So, I hope I'll succeed it. I know someone who asked him a pic last year in Stockholm and it was ok.

Noah now is a star as a singer but still popular as a tennisplayer and as a man . I have to say that he succeeded his new carreer. I have never been a fan of him but I listened his last albums and it was very good.

Guy Forget, when he's asked about what he thinks France's chances are to win...

-How high do you rate the Qualification chances for French team?
-Those are stats that journalists are keen on! I think that Swedes are a little bit stronger than us on the paper, but we're gonna play in front of our country men. They may have 60% chances, and we 40%. But all this can turn the other way round in a short time.

Those words were previous to the announcement of Pim Pim and Robin's respective retirements. It would be interesting to ask the same question now...

Choupi
02-27-2005, 04:57 PM
Yes Val, I've seen the report about the training session in Geneva, as well as the short interview with Mats. Here is what I want to keep in mind. Nothing really new in fact...

Clément has said that he felt they (the experienced DC players) had a great responsiblity today in relation to Gaël the newcomer. He said that it is important that they show what DC really represents for them and that this tradition doesn't die with them out of the team.

Forget has been asked about the 2 retirements of Pim Pim and Robin, and he replied, with a sweet smile, that the fact that for once that the injuries were touching the others, it wasn't meant to displease him...

Grosjean is still uncertain in his game, because of his injury. But he adds that it's getting better every day. He's gaining in confidence.

So, that implies that the players for the singles will certainly be Mathieu, maybe Grosjean if he keeps on feeling good, or Llodra, who is in the doubles with Arnaud anyway.

Concerning the short interview of Mats, he reminded us about the famous match point he had asked to play again in his semi in RG in 82. He said he's no saint to have done so, that everybody would have done so...(I doubt!!!) He thought that he decently couldn't be declared the winner of a match in which he had not won the match point.
He talked about his lost final against Yannick, in 83. He said that it's been the worst experience that could happen to him, facing a French player in front of the French crowd in RG. He also pointed out that he was proud to have witnessed the victory of a French guy in RG, because it was a great moment in French tennis history. He has added that this final against Yannick had contributed to get them close to each other for life, and that Yannick had been the one to advice him to become DC captain. He has followed his example and doesn't regret his choice.

Yes, with Pim Pim, it will be more difficult for France to win !!! To be serious, I think that if he doesn't want to be out for the clay season, he should have a rest to avoid a serious injury with his shoulder. He has to think that he has the clay season afterwards. And, I watched Pim Pim on clay, last year in Paris(yes, it was last year and Pim Pim was not THE Pim Pim we know), but he's not a reference at all. I think he can be beaten on clay by one of the french players :(. It's not only with his big serve that he can win the match. I like Pim Pim a lot but I hope that he won't play. Here it is:

Sweden will have to trust in "the old DC fellows".

STRASBOURG It should have been the young guns' tie. But now the odds are high that Sweden will have to trust in "the old fellows".
-Davis Cup is always as fun and it was no hesitations for me to be here when they called me, says 31 years old Thomas Enqvist about this weekend's away tie against France.

Swedish tennis has this year mostly been about 22 year old "Pim-pim" and two years younger Robin Söderling and the ill-matched duo was supposed to pull the weight now as well. Thomas shouldn't have been here at all and was asked only after the withdrawals of the country's latest array of tennis stars.

-I was in USA preparing for Indian Wells, so if I look to my own good, this comes as an interruption in my planning. But the good of the team takes precedence, says the Stockholm native, who instead of working on his hardcourt form now must try to find his rythm on clay.

That's not your favourite surface, is it?
-No, but I still think it plays pretty well for me. The ball bounces up pretty nicely and it suits me well, says Thomas who has only experienced clay indoors in his loss against Jevgenij Kafelnikov in the tie away vs. Russia three years ago.
-That court was darn awful compared to this one which so far holds up very well, says Thomas about the unusually quick indoor clay surface which suits the Swedes better than the usually slower regular clay.

The court is set in a ware-house looking building with a capacity of 6000 spectators which is situated a couple of lobs from the EU Parliament.
Until only a day ago it was decided Thomas and namesake Johansson, would play the singles, and it was ecually firm the doubles pair would be Jonas Björkman, soon to be 33, and Simon Aspelin, 30.

Although nothing is irrevocably set yet with "Pim-pim" back in the mix, everything points towards Captain Mats Wilander keeping the quartet intact.
If not, loyal team-player Thomas Enqvist could have flied in from his American training camp completely unnecessarily.
-If that's the case, then I'll have to take it. It would feel weird if I was picked to play for another reason than me playing so well I earned the spot.
Without "Pim-pim" the team would be one of the most experienced ones Sweden has had in many years despite taking into account Simon Aspelin's single DC effort.

Enqvist made his DC debut already 10 years ago and played in the final against France the year after. However few people remember he played great and defeated Arnaud Boetch as well as Cedric Pioline, whereas more people remember "cramping" Nicklas Kulti ( ) losing despite having matchpoints against Boetch in the decider.
-That day is one of the best memories from my career. The ups and downs and the drama and Nicklas tremendous match, that was completely amazing. Although we were disappointed by the loss, we were also proud of being part of the great event it turned out to be, says Enqvist.

Thanks for the article and the translation Aphex. :)

If Enqvist turns out to have interrupted his training session in the US for nothing, that will leave some trace. Even if he says the contrary. Anyway, we'll know more tomorrow, when captains will officially announce who'll play.
3 days left...I just can't wait now! :p

You're welcome :wavey: .

I go see if the three other national papers have written anything. They usually only care about the majors and tournament wins, but you never know...

This one is pretty good. I might translate it later.

And this is unrelated, but still chockingly good for me. http://expressen.se/index.jsp?a=249138
The most despicable Swedish tabloid finally does something good. They're starting a sport TV channel which will air all Masters series, 15 other ATP events, and several WTA tournaments. :bigclap: :hatoff:

Thanks Aphex. Great news about the sport chanel. :)

I've also found some stuff...

http://www.alsace.france3.fr/info/8666654-fr.php

It's an article about French impressions, dated today. If you go and click on "Les équipes ont pris possession du Hall Rhenus" you'll have a short clip showing you the 2 teams practising, with also some excerpts of the press conference. I attach the pic.

Here are my translations of the quotes (yes, that's in French!)

Forget: Joachim Johansson's participation (initially announced retired) changes everything. He's one of the best world players and we'll have to play our best tennis to go through this 1st round[...]
Game conditions here are perfect. The place is big and nice, and it's up to us to show worth of it.[...]
A new team is in construction, composed by young players and more experienced ones. We're at the doorstep of a brand new adventure.[...]
About Grosjean's physical condition...all lights are on green concerning his thigh
Grosjean: I'm not far from being back 100%. I've got 2 days left to give it all and gain in confidence.
