Best Under-the-Table Guarantee Men: Roger Federer at Dubai

How much cash are top seeds such as Federer getting handed under the table in appearances fees to be enticed to play the smaller events? Consider golfer Tiger Woods being offered $6 million from the oil-rich organizers in Dubai just to get off the plane! And you wonder why George W. wants to march across the Middle East? Club Fed probably got a pipeline named after him in addition to a nice deposit in his Swiss bank account for Dubai, well done. Too bad later in the year you'll skip the "required" Masters Series events saying you're being asked to play too much.

Just what is appearance fees?

Appearance fees (or 'guarantees') are paid to players to entice them to play in a tournament (ranging from say $10,000 up to a million, rumor has it). Believe me, Andre Agassi doesn't show up in San Jose every year hoping to win that $35,000 winners check (or whatever it is these days). Most of the top players get them, or whoever the tourny organizers believe will sell tickets. JMG still gets them for some of the tournaments he plays because he popular regardless of his ranking.

Everyone knows about them, no one likes to talk about them.

That would be amazing for tennis loving residents there if that is true.

It is true that Doha gives away the tickets to the tournament. Its a small country that is very rich from oil revenues, so its no big deal to them.
